New flowmeter line introduced.

Many industrial process plants and facilities include hundreds or even thousands of measurement devices. Particularly for basic applications, demands for simplicity in commissioning, operation, and maintenance have increased significantly in recent years. Proline 10 meets these requirements without compromise because simplicity is the top priority for this new line of flowmeters from Endress+Hauser.

Proline Promag and Promass flowmeters have been proven in use over the past few decades in various industries. Since Promass flowmeters were introduced 40 years ago, over 1 million devices have been delivered. Promag flowmeters have been on the market for almost 50 years with over 2 million installed devices. Proline flowmeters continue this legacy with products designed for basic applications.

In addition to traditional quality indicators, the expectations for additional process plant and measuring device quality have continually increased. At the same time, end users demand minimal required maintenance effort coupled with maximum ease of use and low operating costs.

The Proline 10 fulfills these requirements without compromise. Endress+Hauser’s tried-and-tested transmitter technology has evolved with an even stronger focus on simplicity and user-friendliness, providing cost-efficiency and time savings through the complete lifecycle—from procurement to servicing—via simple and intuitive operation. This makes it easy for users to keep tabs on their basic applications, even in core processes.

Uncompromisingly simple
Proline 10 provides time and money savings over the entire product life cycle without any limitation on measurement performance. Every device is tested on accredited and traceable calibration rigs per ISO/IEC 17025. Proline 10 provides a high level of simplicity, safety and reliability.

Simplicity starts with end users selecting the optimum device for their application quickly, without overlooking any important order options. However, simplicity goes even farther. All the transmitter functions share one common goal: making handling of the device as easy as possible. Both commissioning and operation can be done quickly, in the field as well as in the control room. A commissioning wizard enables on-site configuration with either the auto-rotatable and high-contrast LCD touch screen, or the SmartBlue app via Bluetooth. The latter approach is particularly useful when devices are installed in difficult-to-access locations.

If warning or error messages occur during operation, Proline 10 provides guidance via integrated device diagnostics, which categorizes errors in accordance with NAMUR NE107, visualizes the cause of each, and offers appropriate remedies to provide error-free operation.

Designed for basic applications in all industries
Proline 10 flowmeters cover a wide range of basic applications in all kinds of industries. Proline Promag electromagnetic flowmeters are ideally suited for measuring the flows of conductive liquids, as well as for volume measurement of water and corrosive liquids (Promag W/H/D 10), and chemically aggressive fluids (Promag P 10).

The flowmeters meet the demands of basic applications in the water and wastewater, food and beverages, mining, minerals and metals, chemicals, power and energy, life sciences, utility, and other industries. They can be used, for example, for measuring raw water, cooling water, process water, or wastewater. Typical applications include volume measurement, consumption measurement, process monitoring, pump control, and dosing measurement.

Promass K 10 Coriolis flowmeters measure the mass flow of both liquids and gases in utilities, with minimal operating costs to maintain the flowmeter. The device can be used for filling and dosing tasks, process monitoring, pump control, consumption measurements, and much more.

In the chemical industry, Promass K 10 is used to measure the mass flow of liquids such as acids, alkalis, cleaning agents and solvents, oils, and alcohols—as well as liquid hydrocarbons.

In the food and beverage industry, the device measures the admixture quantity of animal fats (e.g., butter), or carbon dioxide (CO₂) during beverage carbonization. Furthermore, Promass K 10 is a reliable device for accurate quantity measurement in submetering distribution networks. In the life sciences industry, it can be used for mass flow measurement of purified water for injection purposes on process skids. In the utility industry, users benefit from efficient and cost-saving mass flow measurement of liquid and gaseous fuels.

Simply clever – multivariable and usable everywhere
Proline 10 provides optimum product quality and process monitoring measurements via the simultaneous measurement of additional process variables. In addition to mass flow, Promass K 10 also measures volume flow, temperature, and optionally density. With its Gas Fraction Handler function, Promass K 10 provides reliable and accurate measurements of even inhomogeneous liquids with entrained gas.

Proline Promag 10 is optionally available with conductivity measurement (Promag W/P/H) or temperature measurement (Promag H). Promag W and P can also be ordered with grounding-free measurement, which is based on the floating measurement concept.

Another order option is “0 x DN full bore” for the Promag W 10. Electromagnetic flowmeters with this option can be installed without inlet and outlet runs, a capability often needed in piping networks or directly downstream of fittings to provide accurate measurements independently of the flow profile. Thanks to their design without tube restriction, there is no pressure loss.

Heartbeat Technology – for maximum operational safety
The Heartbeat Technology option provides permanent self-diagnostics with the highest level of coverage, as well as a traceable device verification, all without process interruption. The integrated real-time clock ensures each verification receives an automatically generated time stamp. Heartbeat Technology reduces risks in a plant, thus increasing reliability and availability.

Data storage
HistoROM data storage ensures maximum data security before, during, and after servicing. All device parameters are stored securely on the HistoROM data storage module and are automatically reloaded after maintenance work, or easily transferred after a device is replaced. Installation and maintenance are therefore easy and quick, reducing downtime.

Transmitter for seamless system integration
Promag and Promass sensors can be combined with four different Proline 10 transmitters:

  • Without display, measurement data can be queried via communication protocols.
  • With two status LEDs, operated via Bluetooth with the SmartBlue app.
  • With a 2.4" LCD display which can be used to read data, with the SmartBlue app is used for configuration and operation.
  • With a 2.4" LCD touchscreen that can be operated with common touch gestures, or by using the SmartBlue app.

Proline transmitters make no compromise in terms of performance and accuracy. Digital signal processing begins in the intelligent sensor and is the basis for reliable, exact measurement. The transmitter can simultaneously record multiple measured values and forward them to a process control or monitoring system. Complete access to all measurement data, including diagnostic data acquired by Heartbeat Technology, is possible at any time thanks to digital data transmission over HART or Modbus RS485, and over the corresponding 4-20 mA signal outputs.

Fast-response, extended-range flow measurement.

Those responsible for the extraction, processing, storage, industrial plant distribution, consumption or sub metering of natural gas will find the latest advances in thermal mass flow measurement with Adaptive Sensing Technology™ (AST) from Fluid Components International (FCI) can help them achieve higher efficiencies at lower costs while reducing their carbon footprint to protect the planet and boost profits.

The accurate, reliable measurement of natural gas is critical in a wide range of industrial processes and manufacturing applications. For example during oil extraction, refining, transport and storage, it is sometimes necessary to flare off excess gas at the wellhead, or later on during the separation process to remove water and contaminants, or aboard LNG vessels or at land-based storage facilities and distribution depots.

Many manufacturing and processing industries, as well as large commercial buildings and campuses, also rely on natural gas as a fuel source to power boilers, burners, dryers, engines, furnaces, generators, kilns and more. Controlling natural gas costs is critical to product quality, competitiveness and profits. FCI’s green-friendly AST thermal flow meters help process and plant operation engineers in these industries conserve natural gas resources by measuring it more accurately and consistently with an innovative, patent-pending flow meter hybrid sensor drive. This measuring technique combines both of the industry’s highly proven constant power (CP) and constant temperature (CT) thermal dispersion sensing technologies in one flow meter.

AST thermal flow meters measure in CT mode during start-up and through the lower flow ranges, and will then seamlessly shift into CP mode at mid-range and higher flow rates. The result is AST achieves a best of both technologies performance level to deliver extremely fast response with extended measuring ranges at low power consumption to maximize sensor reliability and reduce instrument energy expenses as well.

FCI’s AST technology flow meters feature a rugged no-moving parts thermal flow element design, which provides direct mass flow measurement of air and gases with just a single process penetration. This approach saves plant real estate space and eliminates unnecessary installation labor, additional wiring and -MORE- other expenses. It also prevents the performance degradation encountered with other flow technologies, which require the addition of expensive temperature and pressure sensors to compute an inferred mass flow.

With no moving parts to plug or foul, and virtually no pressure drop, AST thermal flow meters deliver extensive life cycle cost savings over higher maintenance technologies. The result is more accurate, repeatable mass flow measurement at the lowest total installed cost. In today’s complex process and manufacturing plant control schemes, AST thermal flow meters economically provide the accurate gas flow measurements essential for greater process consistency, quality, plant safety and environmental compliance.

The FCI Model ST80 Series and the Model ST100 Series AST technology thermal mass air/gas flow meters are highly responsive (within 1 second) and accurate to ±0.75% of reading, ±0.5% of full scale, with repeatability of ±0.5% of reading. They are suitable for use in air/gas temperatures up to 850°F [450°C]. Their wide flow range, from 0.25 SFPS to 1000 SFPS [0.08 NMPS to 300 NMPS] and array of analog outputs and digital bus communications allow their application in almost any industrial process or manufacturing application.

The Models ST80 and ST100 Series flow meters come with impressive global HazEx certifications for Div.1/Zone 1 level safety in the most demanding environments. Best-in-class integrated or remote displays feature full graphics and text with touch controls, offering flow rate or totalized flow data as well as sophisticated diagnostics.

Fluid Components International is a global company committed to meeting the needs of its customers through innovative solutions for the most challenging requirements for sensing, and measuring flow, pressure and temperature of air and gases.

Ground-breaking piezo proportional flow control valve.

The new VEMD proportional flow control valve from Festo uses the latest piezo technology to deliver highly dynamic control for numerous medical and other industrial control applications.
The VEMD is a mass flow controller integrating a flow sensor with a proportional valve and controller and is designed to proportionally control the flow of compressed air and inert gases within a small, neat and calibrated package. It compares the required signal value with the actual, sensor-measured value within its closed loop electronic controller and then adjusts the output using the piezo pilot valve. The piezo pilot valve provides a wide variety of advantages including silent operation, the absence of heat generation, a compact and lightweight design and long service life – as well as an unmatched low power consumption of only one Watt.

These characteristics make the VEMD eminently suitable for life sciences and mobile applications, ranging from ventilators and anaesthesia to operating equipment for ophtalmology and dental drills. Its small size, energy efficiency and silent operation make it ideal for patient-side operation for those who are bed bound and need rest uninterrupted by noisy solenoids. It is also very attractive for patients reliant on portable oxygen delivery systems where it is less socially intrusive than alternative designs. An additional benefit is that it is non-magnetic and so does not interfere with other medical equipment.

Other industries can also benefit for the VEMD’s unique characteristics, including applications in semiconductor / electronics manufacture (control of combustive gases), food and beverage (quality inspection, protective gas delivery) and pharma (bioreactors and fermenters). In special purpose machine building, the VEMD can be specified for a wide variety of tasks, such as mixing of air into test stations, controlling humidity, inert gas welding, 3D printing, mass spectrometry and many more.

Easy to control, precise dynamics
The VEMD is designed to control flows of up to 20 l/m at a maximum pressure of 2.5 bar. The modular design of the VEMD addresses the needs of OEM customers as well as end users.

The gas flow at the output of the valve can be adjusted very easily and controlled in linear mode by entering a setpoint between 0 and 10 V. An integrated control circuit with thermal sensor makes the VEMD precise and dynamic. It responds up to 35 times faster than comparable products to a setpoint change, and is ready for operation straight out of the box.

Mass air flow sensors.

Devices Allow Users to Create a Custom Flow Body Design While Reducing System Size, Increasing Reliability, and Establishing Proprietary Calibration Values

Posifa Technologies has announced its new PMF6000 series of mass air flow sensors for use in bypass assemblies. Featuring a manifold-mount design, the devices reduce system size and increase reliability while allowing users to establish proprietary calibration values.

Featuring compact robust packages, the PMF6000 series sensors were developed specifically for users wanting the flexibility of designing their own flow body and restrictor element. The devices' manifold-mount design eliminates the need for hoses and external connections, reducing the overall system size and the number of potential leak points.

By utilizing the linearized factory calibration provided by Posifa, users can create master calibration curves specific to their custom bypass design with minimal additional corrections in the production process. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, PMF6000 series sensors provide users with a competitive edge by allowing them to perform their own calibration and maintain the values within the company.

The devices feature Posifa's third-generation thermal flow die, which uses a pair of thermopiles to detect changes in temperature gradient caused by mass flow. The result is excellent repeatability and accuracy of 4 % reading typical. The solid-state thermal isolation structure on the sensor die eliminates the need for a surface cavity or fragile membrane used in competing technologies, making the sensor resistant to clogging and pressure shock.

Measuring flow rates at 1000 sccm (PMF6102) and 6000 sccm (PMF6106), the devices offer extremely fast response times of 5 ms typical and operate over a -25 °C to +85 °C temperature range. Please contact Posifa to discuss options for customizing the sensors' specifications.

Coriolis massflow meter with ProfiNet I/O.

The Krohne MFC 400 signal converter is now available with PROFINET I/O option. Hereby, all OPTIMASS x400 Coriolis mass flowmeters (compact and field versions) can be equipped with Industrial Ethernet communication, complementing the existing HART 7, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS PA and DP as well as Modbus communication options.

With PROFINET I/O, all measuring, process and diagnostic information from the meters is available real-time via a single communication channel, allowing for convenient integration of new meters: the MFC 400 supports network functions such as Auto-Negotiation, Auto Crossover, Auto Polarity and Network diagnostics, and is is automatically added to the communication path topology when connected to the network. It also supports Media Redundancy Protocol: in the event of a line or device failure the MFC 400 instantly switches to an alternative communication path when installed in supporting topologies. A web server is not required, standard functions such as zero flow calibration or counter reset can be performed directly.

One or two M12 (D coded) connectors allow installation in all topologies with data transfer speeds of up to 100 MBps. An additional external switch is not required as it features an integrated managed Ethernet switch, providing additional functionality including diagnostics: conforming to the NAMUR standard NE 107 for status and error handling, the MFC 400 provides extensive self-checking of internal circuits and information regarding the health of the measuring sensor as well as information about current process conditions, e.g. indication of 2-phase flows, density or temperature.

Large massflowmeters introduced.

New large line sizes have been added as standard for Krohne's OPTIMASS series: for OPTIMASS 6400, diameters DN150/6" and DN200/8" have been added, and OPTIMASS 2400 is now available up to DN400/16".

Targeted at the oil & gas and petrochemical industries, typical applications for the new large line sizes include bulk hydrocarbon loading and bunkering, LNG/cryogenic or high temperature applications. They feature gas and liquid MID and OIML custody transfer approvals and compliance with API and AGA guidelines, SIL 2/3 functionality and NE 107 diagnostic functions.

While OPTIMASS 6400 DN150/ 6" and DN200/ 8" share the dual bent tube design of their smaller sizes, the OPTIMASS 2400 DN400/ 16" is a completely new design: the well-known dual straight tube has been extended to a four straight tube design for flow rates up to 4,600 t/h / 169,021 lb/min, making it the highest capacity Coriolis flowmeter on the market. Available in both Duplex and Super Duplex, it maintains the benefits of the straight tube design: low pressure loss, small installation envelope, support on the meter body, secondary containment, and immunity to crosstalk between meters installed in the same line. Accuracy is 0.1 % with a turndown of 20:1 and an optional 0.05 % “flat” accuracy with a turndown of 10:1. OPTIMASS 2400 is suitable for field proving with small volume prover, in-situ calibration verification and documentation with OPTICHECK verification tool is also possible.

The new large line sizes also feature Entrained Gas Management EGM, offering continuous and repeatable mass flow or density measurement over a wide range of gas fractions and complex flow conditions. The meters indicate and maintain operation with 2-phase flows such as liquids mixed with gas, slurries with gases or highly viscous fluids with gas entrainments.

EGM on Coriolis mass flowmeters.

Entrained Gas Management EGM technology is now available for all Krohne OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters. With the latest additions OPTIMASS 3400 and OPTIMASS 7400, now the whole OPTIMASS series offers continuous and repeatable mass flow or density measurement with 2-phase flows such as liquids mixed with gas, slurries with gases or highly viscous fluids with gas entrainments.

In the past, this presented a huge challenge for mass flowmeters: without gas entrainments, the measuring tubes in the Coriolis mass flowmeter have the desired regular oscillation. Gas entrained in the liquid dampens this regular oscillation, and as the gas content increases, it can come to a complete stop. To overcome this, Krohne developed powerful control algorithms that allow the meter to maintain oscillation and continue to measure even with complex flow conditions. This is possible even during a complete transition from a pure liquid phase to a gas phase and back, i.e. from 0…100% gas content. Mass flow and density measurements remain stable, continuous and repeatable.

Since the introduction of the EGM technology in 2012, OPTIMASS flowmeters with EGM have proven themselves in 2-phase flow and batch/loading/empty-full-empty applications in various industries:

  • Food & Beverage: raw milk, ice cream, dough, sirup, tomato concentrate, spinach, meat, margarine, mayonnaise, meat, syrup, coffee extract, coolants, sugar concentrates and molasses
  • Chemical: hydrogen peroxide processing, viscous monomers/polymers, liquid removal from stirred tanks, highly concentrated assets such as fuming HCl or HNO3, polyurethane foams, push to empty tanks

Loading metering skids.

Loading Metering Skids are a certified solution for custody transfer of light hydrocarbons including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and marine gas to and from tanker trucks, rail cars and ships.

Endress+Hauser introduces the Loading Metering Skid (LMS), a certified solution for custody transfer of light hydrocarbons including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and marine gas to and from tanker trucks, railcars and ships.

The skid includes a Promass Coriolis mass flow meter, batch controller, grounding system, temperature sensor, digital start-stop valve, Y-strainer, isolation valves, frame, piping, an Ex d junction box, and other associated components. The skid is certified for custody transfer per MID Directive 2004/22/EC, Class 0.5.

The Promass Coriolis meter provides outputs for mass flow, density and volume. This is especially important for the future as trends indicate light hydrocarbons will go from volume to mass billing, as is already in place for LPG custody transfer.

Due to the lower pressure loss of the Promass Coriolis mass flow meter as compared to other types of flow meters, the loading/unloading station can operate at higher flow rates. This results in faster loading times, or lower pump energy consumption at the same flow rate.

Three versions of the skid are available: Model LMS080 for truck loading has a 3-inch line and a maximum loading rate of 3,300 lb/min (1,500 kg/min); Model LMS100 for railcar loading has a 4-inch line for a maximum loading rate of 5,500 lb/min (2,500 kg/min); and the LMS150 for ships has a 6-inch line for a maximum loading rate of 13,670 lb/min (6,200kg/min).

The LMS skids are completely assembled and certified for easy installation and commissioning at a loading or unloading depot. Skids are available for horizontal or vertical installation, including a loading arm. Options include an air eliminator, prover connections, pressure sensor, grounding
system and a 2-inch blending line. The blending line can be connected to the metering skid and controlled by the batch controller via three different recipes.

Open and standardized digital communication interfaces allow smooth integration to the Endress+Hauser Terminal Management System, Tank Vision Gauging system, or similar inventory management systems from other suppliers.

The skid also connects to Endress+Hauser Terminalvision software for handling of requirements for road, rail and barge loading depots and terminals. The skid’s open control and monitoring system is designed to interface to most supplier systems used for access control, loading and weighbridges.

•The Loading Metering Skids will be exhibited at the International Liquid Terminals Association show, June 1-3, 2015, in Houston (TX USA). Booth #605

Smallest dual bent-tube meter

The ROTAMASS LR, the world´s smallest dual bent-tube Coriolis mass flowmeter has been launched by Yokogawa.

The new flowmeter employs a proven dual bent-tube and self-draining design and represents a significant addition to Yokogawa´s ROTAMASS low flow line product family for gas and liquid flow measurement.

Designed to measure both liquids and gases, the effective turndown of the ROTAMASS LR is no less than 2000:1 for liquids and 5000:1 for gases, and the mass flow measurement range spans from 10.5 g/h up to 40 kg/h, achieving a measurement accuracy of ±0.15% of reading for liquids and ±0.5% for gases.

Development background
The Coriolis flowmeter market continues to grow, and a number of market research reports have identified increasing demand for smaller devices with a 2-inch bore diameter or less. There is also rising demand for low flow measurement solutions that achieve high accuracy and stability. The majority of small Coriolis flowmeters on the market currently use single-tube detectors, which have been shown to be less accurate and stable under conditions that include vibration and changes in the ambient or fluid temperature. To meet the market’s need for accurate and stable measurement of fluids at low flow rates, Yokogawa has developed this low flow Coriolis flowmeter based on its proven dual bent-tube detector design.

Product features

1. Dual bent-tube design with perfect balance for robust performance
The ROTAMASS LR employs a dual bent tube that optimally decouples the core measuring element from process vibration that can cause fluctuating zero stability and reduced measurement accuracy. When fluid density changes, a single-tube Coriolis flowmeter can become imbalanced and start to behave like an emitter. It remains balanced because of the equal mass change in both tubes and the absence of interference from the process piping. By design, it is insensitive to fluctuations in the ambient temperature and achieves excellent zero stability under changing process conditions. The two tubes are made from C-22 alloy, which is less susceptible to thermal expansion than conventional stainless steel.
2. Unique inline temperature sensor for reliable measurement
The measurement of tube temperature plays a key role in mass flow and density measurements. Normally it is more difficult to measure temperature with Coriolis flowmeters that have tubes with a smaller surface area. The ROTAMASS LR solves this problem by using an inline temperature sensor, ensuring exact and fast measurements in process temperatures ranging from -50°C to +150°, a unique feature in the low flow Coriolis flowmeter market.
3. Robust stainless steel housing
The ROTAMASS LR sets a new safety standard in the low flow market, with a gas-tight, all-stainless-steel secondary containment that can handle pressures up to 65 bar. The flowmeter can be used in high pressure applications up to 400 bar. A huge variety of welded process connections are available. Unlike most flowmeters on the market today, gaskets are not used, minimising the risk of leaks.
4. Insulation and heating jacket options
For the prevention of fluid component separation and gas condensation, insulation and a heat jacket are available as an option.

Takashi Nishijima, a Director and Senior Vice President, and Head of Yokogawa’s Industrial Automation Platform Business Headquarters, comments: “By measuring and controlling very low flow rates with a high level of precision, Yokogawa is helping its customers to realise the company’s VigilantPlant concept. We believe that this newly developed product gives customers a wider range of choices in multivariable process measurement and allows for greater accuracy and steady measurement in their utilisation."

The major target markets for this product are Chemical research laboratories, chemical plants, pharmaceutical plants. Applications are liquid and gas low flow measurement, high pressure gas pipelines, chemical injection, micro dosing systems, metering pump control, blending, precision coating, vacuum thin-film coating
