It employs a non-contact ultrasonic level sensor to measure the water level in a flume, weir or other channel. The unit is programmed using three front panel push buttons, with the programming menu offering a wide variety of primary flow elements. Based on Manning's equation, the flow rate is determined according to the dimensions, characteristics and water level of the channel. This correspondence between water level and flow rate allows for a cost-effective solution for measuring flow in angular open channels and partially filled pipes, as well as measuring volumetric contents of liquids in tanks.

The iSonic 4000 open channel flow meter easily interfaces with most supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Simple to install and setup, it sends level, flow rate and total volume information over Modbus RTU. A robust data-logging feature with selectable intervals provides a backup of measurements in case of network outages or reporting lapses.

With an operating temperature range of -4°…140° F (-20°…60° C), the iSonic 4000 can be paired with the Badger Meter BEACON® Advanced Metering Analytics (AMA) software and AquaCUE® Flow Measurement Manager system for use in utilities and water resource management. Although the device normally functions as a flow meter, it can be used for pump control based on the water level to reduce equipment costs. A rugged powder-coated aluminum enclosure protects internal components and extends asset life.

Typical applications for the iSonic 4000 are found in industries such as wastewater effluent, storm water systems, agriculture irrigation, and general process and industrial discharge.

Turbine flow meters for diverse applications

The Vision Series turbine flow meters, from Badger,  comply with lead-free provisions of the United States Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and are bisphenol A (BPA) free. The compact meters are designed for flow measurement of low-viscosity and non-aggressive liquids, including de-mineralised water, alkaline solutions, oils, fuel, beverages, water solutions and coolants.

The Vision turbine flow meter is intended for use in diverse applications found in the food, medical products, chemical, pharmaceutical, automotive and general industrial fields. Many of these applications are affected by the SDWA, which authorises the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set health-based standards to protect against both naturally occurring and man-made contaminants in the nation's drinking water supply.

The Vision Series consists of two turbine flow meter models: the V1000 for measuring liquid flow as low as 0.026 gallons per minute (gpm) and up to 0.65 gpm, and the V2000 for measuring liquid flow as low as 0.13 gpm and up to 9.2 gpm. The flow meters provide accuracy of ±3 percent with resolution up to 70,000 pulses per gallon (ppg), depending on the model. They have a temperature range of –4…212° F and withstand operating pressure up to 362.50 pounds per square inch (psi).

According to Peter Vander Grinten, marketing manager, Badger Meter, the Vision turbine flow meter provides an exceptionally robust and reliable flow measurement solution. "The simple mechanical construction of the Vision meter guarantees a long lifespan without any loss of accuracy. Pressure spikes less than burst pressure rating do not affect its measurements. This meter is especially suitable for washing machines, dishwashers, coffee machines, laser cooling plants, solar solutions, bakery machines, steam cooking machines in large kitchen plants, and CD or DVD cleaning."

The Vision turbine flow meter employs a volumetric operating principle, whereby liquid flow causes a bladed turbine inside the meter housing to turn at an angular velocity directly proportional to the velocity of the liquid measured. As the blades pass beneath a magnetic pickup coil, a frequency signal is generated. Each pulse is equivalent to a discrete volume of liquid. The frequency pulse is directly proportional to the turbine angular velocity and the flow rate.

The large number of pulses generated by the Vision meter ensures high resolution. The pulses can be used for digital or analog signal processing and specified as a K Factor. As the mass of the turbine is small, the response time is fast. It is not necessary to install a straight length of pipeline upstream of the meter.

Smart valve positioners provide actionable information about valve performance

Robust diagnostics help processing facilities comply with fugitive emissions regulations

Badger Meter has introduced the Research Control® SRD series of smart valve positioners, which deliver robust, actionable diagnostic information about valve performance and help process industry facilities comply with recent fugitive emissions regulations. Badger Meter also released the Research Control SRI series of analog valve positioners.
The SRD 960 (explosion-proof) and SRD 991 (intrinsically safe) digital valve positioners provide economical and user-friendly solutions for industries such as chemical, petrochemical, water and wastewater, oil and gas, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical. An optional base model, the SRI 990, provides analog valve control with fast control behavior. The positioner’s control boards can be swapped out to upgrade from an SRI to an SRD.

The SRD/SRI positioners are compatible with Research Control valves and most other pneumatically-actuated valves. The positioners are ideal for both new valve installations and retrofitting existing valves. The SRD/SRI can be used to reduce the adverse effects of on-line valve friction, enabling higher thrust and shorter positioning time. Optional limit switches can also be added to stroke or rotary actuators to serve as end positions.

A key feature of the SRD is its comprehensive valve diagnostics tool, which continuously monitors for fugitive emissions due to leaks and other unintended or irregular releases of gases, to help process plants meet the ANSI/FCI 91-1 standard and comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions guidelines. By early detection of fugitive emissions via SRD's leak monitoring, process plants can immediately schedule maintenance to minimize potential air pollution from their facilities and avoid fines.

The SRD provides real-time performance statistics and facilitates both proactive and reactive process management. The positioner supports methods for evaluation of valve health, operation and configuration. These capabilities, in turn, allow for predictive maintenance, intelligent alarm management, self-surveillance in accordance with NAMUR NE107 recommendations, and service management.

The SRD valve diagnostic software is available as Device Type Manager (DTM) for integration into control systems based on Field Device Tool (FDT) technology. The positioner DTM enables the user to edit a complete "health" report on the valve with all data of configuration and diagnostics. In addition, the SRD is capable of controlling a partial stroke test that offers operators a tool to identify the trouble-free function of emergency shutdown valves. The positioner is suitable for safety applications up to Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3.

The SRD is available with different communication protocols, including analog setpoint (4 to 20 mA) without communication and with superimposed HART® signal, and digital with FOUNDATION™ fieldbus H1 or Profibus® PA communications to provide connectivity to supervisory control and data acquisition systems. Communication protocol options are field-installable and can easily be changed to a different available protocol option during a system retrofit. The positioner provides the same software connectivity whether it is connected locally or via the supported networks.

The compact SRD/SRI series easily mounts to all linear and rotary actuators. Models are offered in IP66 and NEMA 4X enclosures, as well as an optional stainless steel housing, with ATEX and Factory Mutual (FM) approval for use in EEx flameproof and intrinsically safe environments.

The SRD positioner features auto-start with self-calibration and can be operated from the local display, control systems, controllers, or PC-based configuration and operation tools. A multi-lingual, full text, graphical LCD display, in conjunction with push buttons, allows comfortable and easy local configuration and operation. The LCD display presents data in simple readable text and requires no external device or software to view alarms.

Flowmeter series offers economical solutions for viscous & caustic fluids

Badger Meter has announced the latest additions to its Industrial Oval Gear (Model IOG) series of flow meters, which provide economical and versatile solutions for industries such as automotive, chemical, oil and gas, pulp and paper, metals, printing and rotating machinery. The new Model IOG 1 inch high-flow, and 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch and 3 inch meters, result in a complete line of 1/4 to 3 inch oval gear flow meters.

Badger Meter Model IOG flow meters are designed to measure very viscous (up to 1,000 cP) and caustic fluids, such as oils, coolants, fuels, lubricants, ink, paint, water solutions, and any other liquid compatible with the materials of construction. The meter line provides high accuracy (± 0.5 to ± 1 percent) and excellent repeatability (± 0.03 percent), even in low-flow environments, and measure liquid flows as low as 0.07 gallons per minute (gpm) and up to 185 gpm.

According to Peter Vander Grinten, marketing manager, Badger Meter, the Model IOG flow meters provide precision performance, even in very low-flow environments, enabling users to match the meter size to their application for optimum accuracy. "Model IOG meters deliver precise flow measurements to eliminate waste, and thanks to low pressure drop, have minimal impact on system energy requirements to move liquids. These rugged meters are compatible with a wide range of industrial liquids from general to corrosive, making them ideal for chemical dispensing, bulk filling of diesel or other petroleum products, and dispensing of industrial fuels and lubricants."

The Model IOG line features a compact size intended for either vertical or horizontal installation into confined areas where space is at a premium. The meters do not require a straight run of pipe or flow conditioning. Models are available in either aluminum or 316L stainless steel construction.

Due to their durable construction, Badger Meter Model IOG flow meters can be employed in the harshest environments where conventional flow-measuring equipment is not acceptable. This includes processes with fluid temperatures from 22 to 240° F (-30 to 120° C). The oval gear configuration offers high accuracy and dependability with a minimum number of wearable parts for long service life and easy field maintenance. Models are available with a choice of NPT or BSP threaded connections, or ANSI 150-pound or 300-pound flanges. A variety of instrumentation, both meter- and remote-mounted, is offered for control system interfacing or local monitoring.
