CAD model review on the phone.

Engineers, reviewers, and suppliers explore CAD models, PMI, and metadata on a phone or tablet.

Tech Soft 3D, the provider of engineering software development toolkits and industrial applications, has released SpinFire Insight for Mobile, a free companion app to its SpinFire Insight desktop viewer, now available on iOS and Android.

Design review without a desk.
Engineering teams reviewing 3D models are typically tied to a workstation. Suppliers, quality staff, and project managers who need to check a design, confirm manufacturing information, or answer a question about a part often have to wait until someone with desktop access is available. This slows down reviews and adds friction to communication across distributed teams.

The new SpinFire Insight for Mobile gives teams the benefits of 3D CAD visualization wherever they may be. The app opens standard 3D formats, including STEP, IGES, and PRC, along with publishing formats 3D PDF and U3D, and reads ACT3D files created in the desktop version of SpinFire Insight. Users can navigate models with touch controls, apply standard views, switch between rendering modes, inspect part metadata, and access CAD views and PMI (Product Manufacturing Information) directly from a phone or tablet.

"Engineering data has always lived on a computer, but the questions about it don't wait for someone to sit down at a workstation," said Lionel Vieilly, Senior Product Manager - Industrial Applications. "SpinFire Insight for Mobile puts that data in people's pockets, so a supplier, a reviewer, or a project manager can pull up a model, check a dimension, or confirm a manufacturing note the moment it comes up, not hours later. It’s a small shift with a big impact on team efficiency and speed "

Fitting into existing engineering workflows.
The app is designed for quick, on-the-go review rather than replacing desktop workflows. For advanced design review, measurement, markups, or major CAD formats such as CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, NX, Creo, and Inventor, SpinFire Insight for Desktop remains the primary tool. SpinFire Insight for Mobile is intended to sit alongside it, giving teams a way to check model data, respond to a question, or review PMI when they are away from their workstation, without requiring a full CAD license or desktop session.

By making CAD data accessible from a phone or tablet, SpinFire Insight for Mobile reduces the delay between a question being raised and a model being reviewed. Technical, suppliers, and non-technical stakeholders alike can inspect geometry, manufacturing information, and metadata wherever the work takes them, supporting faster communication and fewer bottlenecks in distributed engineering and manufacturing organisations.

The app is available now as a free download on the App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android.

That bottleneck between quote and drawing.

Why every custom configuration costs the engineering team two weeks.

A customer requests a custom configuration. Sales configures the matching variant that same morning in the CPQ system. And then the waiting begins: in many machine-building companies, it takes engineering two weeks or more to turn that into a matching 3D model, drawing, and bill of materials. The reason: configuration data from sales doesn’t flow automatically into the CAD system — engineers have to rebuild it manually. Every variant gets modeled twice, at the cost of time and accuracy.

What design automation in Lino Hub actually does.
Lino Hub CAD Automation addresses exactly this interface. The module translates configuration results generated in sales directly into CAD commands. Parameterized CAD models automatically generate the matching drawings and bills of materials — without an engineer manually rebuilding the model. For industrial companies, this can shrink configuration-to-drawing time from days or weeks to minutes.

This works because Lino Hub acts as middleware, centrally managing product data behind parameterized CAD models. It makes that data available to sales and engineering throughout the order process. Changes to a configuration automatically update the corresponding models — regardless of whether it’s a standard variant or a custom configuration.

Bidirectional data flow Instead of a one-way street.
A key difference from classic CAD automation solutions lies in the bidirectional data exchange with PDM, PLM, and ERP systems. When an assembly changes in CAD, bills of materials and item master data update automatically in the ERP system. This happens without manual transfer, fully automated and verified. For manufacturing, the process can be extended all the way to CAM programming: machine code can also be derived directly from the configuration.

For data exchange with external partners or approval workflows, the system supports both native CAD formats and neutral formats such as STEP and IGES. Impact on lead time and engineering capacity
Depending on the product portfolio and variant scope, engineering effort for standard variants can be reduced by up to 70 percent. That doesn’t mean engineers do less work. Routine tasks disappear, freeing capacity for more complex development. For companies with many variants or frequent custom configurations, this directly shortens quote and project lead times.

Conclusion.
CAD automation via Lino Hub doesn’t replace engineering work itself — it replaces the recurring, rule-based derivation of models, drawings, and bills of materials from configuration decisions that have already been made. On top of that comes the time advantage from bidirectional data exchange with all relevant enterprise systems. Anyone who wants to see how this translates to their own system landscape can request a live demo based on a concrete use case.

CAD Envelope Geometry for Performance and IP Protection.

The latest version of CoreTechnologie's 3D_Evolution Simplifier software now offers special applications and interfaces for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Digital Factory. Clever features reduce large assemblies by up to 97 percent.

Two-step Simplification Process
With the new application, it is possible to further simplify the lightweight solid envelope geometry CAD models created by the Simplifier process in a second step, which is an polygon reduction function for tessellated formats, especially for VR/AR as well as factory planning software tools. In the first step, the inner geometry is removed and a closed CAD solid envelope geometry is automatically generated. This is followed by an automatic deletion of interior components and an optional filtering of solids with small volumes. For the generation of exact CAD models, the optimum is reached after this first step.

To convert the models into tessellated formats such as VRML, FBX, OBG or JT, the next step achieves a predefined percentage reduction of the polygons within seconds using the new polygon reduction function. This extreme reduction in the number of elements to be rendered achieves a much higher performance and fluid rendering, for example, when animating very large assemblies.

The Simplifier automatically generates lightweight CAD envelope geometries for optimal performance in all downstream applications as well as during further processing in the CAD system.

Know-how Protection and optimum Data Quality
The envelopes generated with Simplifier also protect the know-how and enable secure data exchange with development partners, customers and suppliers. The tool processes over 40 different formats, including CATIA, XT, CREO,NX, Solidworks as well as DGN, IFC, JT and STEP without access to a CAD license and ensures optimum quality of import models through automatic checking and correction functions.

Software Configurable Industrial I/O for buildings & industry.

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) has announced the release of the industry’s first Software Configurable Input/Output (I/O) product line for building control and process automation, allowing manufacturers and industrial operators to achieve greater control system flexibility while reducing their own product complexities.

Product pages & data sheets
Traditional control systems require costly and labour-intensive manual configuration, with a complex array of channel modules, analogue and digital signal converters, and individually wired inputs/outputs to communicate with the machines, instruments, and sensors on the operating floor. ADI’s new AD74412R and AD74413R enable flexible control systems to be designed with reconfigurable module channels quickly, easily, and remotely without requiring extensive re-wiring. This drastically increases speed of implementation, flexibility, and the ability to make changes without significant cost and downtime.

As Industry 4.0 emerges, manufacturers need flexible systems that can quickly and easily adapt to changing requirements, all driven by shifts in consumer behaviours and demand. As a result, they can no longer rely on fixed, large-scaled systems designed for mass-market products and predictable demand. Instead, flexible systems that can be reconfigured quickly with minimal downtime and capital investment are required. With ADI’s software configurable I/O, manufacturers can more efficiently implement new projects and achieve more flexible automated control, resulting in reduced design and installation costs, as well as reduced commissioning delays.

In using software configurable I/O, manufacturers can develop a platform that replaces multiple aging fixed function I/O modules or be applied across multiple customer applications where the I/O dynamic changes with each installation. For systems traditionally reliant on control cabinets with multiple I/O modules and specified wiring for each channel type, the need for hardware diminishes as end users can now install a single module type programmable from the control room, helping to decrease logistic, manufacturing and support costs. Software configurable I/O also acts as a bridge to Ethernet-based control networks, as it can further be applied to brownfield installations requiring updates to 10BASE-T1L industrial Ethernet systems. It enables development of standardised, configurable field I/O units capable of translating between installed HART-enabled 4-20mA sensors and actuators and 10BASE-T1L or 100M Fibre backhaul.

Automated calculation of the optimal packaging.

CoreTechnologie GmbH (CT) has added another innovation to the 3D_Evolution Simplifier software: As the first software on the market, the latest version of the Simplifier now allows for a fully automatic calculation of the smallest sphere diameter that surrounds a part or an assembly. With the new function, additional to the generation of a reduced envelope geometry models the Simplifier enables a time-saving and automated calculation of the optimal packaging.

In addition to the diameter calculation according to DIN EN ISO 8062-1, minimal packaging dimensions can be calculated in the form of a box and output as a CAD model of any major format. The determination of the smallest possible packaging dimensions, i.e. the smallest possible space, is used, for example, to optimize logistics costs and to minimize the cost of materials for packaging individual parts or assemblies with a very complex shape. In the past, this used to be a time-consuming manual process that can now be carried out automatically within seconds.

The 3D_Evolution Simplifier software is used by leading companies for fast and automatic data simplification as well as for the conversion of CAD models of all common formats such as Catia, NX, Solidworks, Creo, Inventor, Step, JT and many more. The creation of an envelope geometry is the solution to work smoothly and quickly with extensive and often too detailed 3D original data in CAD, VR and simulation systems. In terms of data quality, the tool enables the conversion of perfect solid models through data analysis and correction functions. In addition to protecting the know-how by creating the envelope models, the sophisticated technology at the same time also significantly reduces the file size as well as the elements that have to be displayed.

Next generation system design software.

National Instruments (NI) has announced LabVIEW NXG 1.0, the first release of the next generation of LabVIEW engineering system design software. LabVIEW NXG bridges the gap between configuration-based software and custom programming languages with an innovative new approach to measurement automation that empowers domain experts to focus on what matters most – the problem, not the tool.

Jeff Kodosky - Father of Labview
“Thirty years ago, we released the original version of LabVIEW, designed to help engineers automate their measurement systems without having to learn the esoterica of traditional programming languages. LabVIEW was the ‘nonprogramming’ way to automate a measurement system,” said Jeff Kodosky, NI cofounder and business and technology fellow, known as the ‘Father of LabVIEW.’ “For a long time we focused on making additional things possible with LabVIEW, rather than furthering the goal of helping engineers automate measurements quickly and easily. Now we are squarely addressing this with the introduction of LabVIEW NXG, which we designed from the ground up to embrace a streamlined workflow. Common applications can use a simple configuration-based approach, while more complex applications can use the full open-ended graphical programming capability of the LabVIEW language, G.”

The 1.0 release of LabVIEW NXG helps engineers performing benchtop measurements drastically increase their productivity with new nonprogramming workflows to acquire and iteratively analyze measurement data. These nonprogramming workflows simplify automation by building the necessary code behind the scenes. For instance, engineers can drag and drop a section of code equivalent to 50 lines of text-based code. This is just one of the many ways LabVIEW NXG helps engineers focus on innovation rather than implementation.

“As business has increased, the NI platform has allowed our software to scale up to meet the rising demand,” said Casey Lamers, senior controls engineer at Phoenix Nuclear Labs, which provides the world’s strongest commercial neutron generators for industries such as medicine, energy and material processing. “Developing custom software for a new accelerator used for the medical imaging isotope industry has gone from taking months to weeks, and software build times have gone from hours to just 30 minutes. As a participant in NI’s lead user program, we’ve been using early versions of LabVIEW NXG over the last year and are confident it will further reduce our development time and improve our ability to deliver new features faster.”

LabVIEW NXG introduces a re-engineered editor with functionality that experienced LabVIEW users often request, but it still offers a user experience similar to complementary software in the market. The refreshed editor further extends the openness of LabVIEW to integrate with a broader set of languages. The modernized editor improves programming productivity by streamlining the editor micro-interactions, user interface objects based on vector graphics and zooming capabilities.

As LabVIEW NXG 1.0 revolutionizes benchtop measurements, new capabilities in LabVIEW 2017 target the development, deployment and management of large, complex and distributed test and embedded applications. These include features that enhance interoperability with standard IP and standard communications protocols such as IEC 61131-3, OPC UA and the secure DDS messaging standard.

pH Process Modeling and Control Simulation in Industry 4.0.

CyboSoft has released a Real-Time pH Process Modeling and Control Simulation Software package. It is the first in CyboSoft's virtual plant software family to help engineers learn how a pH process behaves, and how to effectively control this extremely nonlinear process to comply with EPA wastewater discharge codes and save chemical reagent.

CEO Dr. George Cheng said, "We are entering the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, where everything is supposed to be 'smart'. Ironically, about 90% industrial wastewater pH processes are still controlled by on-off Bang-Bang control, resulting in chemical reagent wastes, equipment corrosion, and environmental pollution. It is our mission to provide software tools and control solutions to help the industry improve control systems and achieve better safety, higher quality, and lower costs."

The Real-Time pH Process Modeling and Control Simulation Software is built in National Instruments' LabVIEW platform and includes:
    (1) pH process diagram,
    (2) a strong-acid-strong-base pH model,
    (3) a weak-acid-strong-base pH model,
    (4) a strong-acid-weak-base pH model,
    (5) a weak-acid-weak-base pH model,
    (6) MFA control simulation for the 4 pH processes using an MFA pH controller,
    (7) PID control simulation for the 4 pH processes,
    (8) On-Off control simulation for the 4 pH processes,
    (9) graphical interface with control faceplates and real-time trends,
    (10) LabVIEW diagrams, and
    (11) pH process model description, MFA controllers used, and recommended control strategy.
"Most process models are presented as mathematical equations or formulas, which are important but have limited usage. A real-time process model can be used as a virtual process to simulate a real process with minimal setup time and cost. Using a virtual plant software tool to solve real problems is a powerful and cost-effective way to help build a Smart Industry," Dr. Cheng added.

CyboSoft's pH process models are delivered as VIs (virtual instruments) in LabVIEW. The user can design and test their pH control systems using the pH process models running in real-time. For instance, a pH process model can run in a PC with real-time interface to a popular pH controller on the market or to an existing pH controller in service. The control results can be compared with the MFA pH control results obtained in MFA control simulations. The user can then take the results, estimate the chemical reagent savings, and show the potential return-on-investment (ROI) when applying for budget to buy the proper pH controller or control software to improve pH control performance.

CyboSoft will release a number of real-time process modeling and control simulation software products in its virtual plant software family that can be purchased from CyboSoft's online store. The pH Process Modeling and Control Simulation Software can also be purchased from National Instruments' Tools Network store, where a 30-day trial version is available. Customers can contact CyboSoft for various MFA control products or for consulting and engineering services. The pH control device vendors can contact CyboSoft for embedding MFA pH control software in their devices.

Multiphysics software speeds the optimisation of electrical machines.

A powerful new version of the Opera electromagnetic and multiphysics design software has been launched by Cobham Technical Services. The new version 18 release of this renowned finite element analysis and simulation software incorporates numerous enhancements to boost functionality, speed and accuracy, while further improving ease of use.

Key new features in Opera v18 include a powerful analytic tool to help users quickly assess different winding configurations in rotating electrical machines. A new graphical analysis setup tool brings drag-and-drop editing simplicity to complex evaluation sequences involving multiphysics simulation. The modelling of materials with very small skin depths is also made much simpler by a new surface impedance boundary condition for transient electromagnetic analysis; the code for this software is also specifically structured to allow parallel processing to accelerate analysis.

The new tool for electrical machine design can shorten development times significantly, by allowing highly detailed investigation of possible winding options prior to finite element analysis and simulation of the most promising designs. Called the Winding Tool, it enables designers to assess the feasibility and efficiency of different coil winding configurations – and their impact on machine performance – very easily and quickly. The software includes a winding wizard which creates a report of all feasible windings for a user-specified range of slots and poles, backed by detailed winding characteristics for each slot-pole combination. It is available for both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional Opera design software packages.

In the case of an electric motor design for example, designers could initially use the Winding Tool to define parameters such as the number of phases, slots and poles. A feasibility indicator instantly shows whether the specified configuration can be realised with single layer windings, while ‘calculate’ and ‘load’ buttons enable individual sets of current or previously stored parameters to be analysed. As standard, the tool provides six different types of graphical output, each accessed easily by a tabbed selector. These comprise circular and linear representations of the optimal winding layout and a ‘star of slots’ representation of harmonic amplitude, together with graphs of winding factor and winding magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonics and a voltage phasor (Görges) diagram.

After verifying winding feasibility, designers would typically use the Winding Tool’s parameter input and graphical output facilities interactively, to investigate how potentially viable winding configurations could be improved or adapted to meet specific motor design objectives. For example, the effect of various winding skew angles on harmonics can be examined in detail as part of the design process - to minimise cogging torque, noise and vibration. The full set of results from each Winding Tool calculation is made available to other Opera facilities in the form of an Opera Object in the Python programming language.

The Opera-3d Modeller now has a graphical tool to simplify the preparation of data for analysis. It provides users with a very convenient means of controlling the sequence of analyses, using drag-and-drop editing to add or remove specific analysis stages to a list. Context sensitivity allows the tool to give instant visual feedback on the validity of requested changes, while the properties and parameters of analysis stages can be adjusted within the tool’s environment. Individual analysis stages can be saved out and used in other sequences to further speed the design process.

The new Analysis Setup tool simplifies advanced multiphysics simulation significantly, including transient cases. Users can now set up a complete chain of electromagnetic, thermal and stress analysis simulations for example, with no limit on complexity or sequence. Loops are allowed and the results from one simulation are passed automatically to the next. Shape deformation caused by forces acting on a model can be employed across different types of simulation; the deformed mesh from stress analysis can be nominated for use in subsequent electromagnetic or thermal analyses. In the case of coils, the software automatically accommodates any changes in current density values due to shape deformation, facilitating very accurate electromagnetic field analysis.

Another major feature in the latest release of Opera-3d is that the scope of the surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) has been widened and is now available for use in transient electromagnetic analysis – including Demagnetization and Motional Analysis. This simplifies the modelling of materials with a very thin skin depth (compared to the size of the model) by replacing the volume elements in a conducting region with surface elements. The variation of fields and currents below the material’s surface is represented by a decaying waveform which models the skin depth.

One of the major applications for the new transient SIBC feature is electrical machines. For example, it could be used to improve the accuracy of eddy current and skin effect analysis in conducting parts – to help designers minimise hard-to-combat sources of losses in large rotating electrical machines such as multi-megawatt AC generators. Eddy currents induced in the surface of conductive components such as lamination clamps, securing bolts and metal cable ties can account for kilowatts of dissipative energy in such machines. Minimising eddy current losses demands accurate modelling of the rate at which these currents decay due to skin effect, and is a task that traditionally can take many weeks of work.

The transient SIBC software code is structured to allow users to take advantage of parallel processing to speed analysis and simulation; the Opera Manager enables users to specify the maximum number of threads per job. While finite element analysis might seem an obvious candidate for code parallelisation – to gain a speed advantage from the shared memory architecture of computers with multi-core processors – some areas benefit far more than others. Cobham therefore employs a progressive development policy, initially targeting software pinch points that will provide users with the largest performance gains. The transient SIBC is a prime candidate – parallel processing can help to shorten analysis times for complex models significantly, often from weeks to days.

Version 18 of Opera also consolidates or extends a number of features that were introduced in the previous version of this software. These include the ‘solve as 2d slice’ feature, which is now standard in the Opera-3d Machines Environment. It enables users to evaluate machine performance using a one element thick slice obtained from the full 3d model, with the appropriate boundary conditions applied automatically. Depending on model complexity this can dramatically reduce the number of elements that need to be solved – often by several orders of magnitude – resulting in much faster solution times. There is almost perfect correlation between results obtained from the 2d slice and the full 3d model, and the 2d slice can be converted to 3d to analyse end-effects.

The graphical user interfaces of Opera-2d and Opera-3d continue to make increasing use of tabbed menus to simplify operation and many are now backed by keyboard shortcuts. Enhanced context sensitivity means that drop-down menus are much shorter and mainly replaced by menu bar icons, allowing fast, single-click navigation and control. All high-level user interface functions can be displayed in English, French, Chinese and Japanese.

Cobham has also taken the opportunity to further extend Opera’s interoperability. Version 18 extends the optional links previously available to a wider variety of third-party computer-aided design packages. These now provide the ability to work with CATIA, NX, Pro-Engineer Creo and SolidWorks files. IGES, Parasolid, SAT and STEP files offer CAD-neutral geometry access.

Error-free configuration and ordering of pneumatic systems.

The new Festo Design Tool 3D configuration software reduces the risk of errors when designing and ordering pneumatic actuator assemblies. Specifying system modules as a complete package with a unique product key simplifies design, logistics and assembly operations.

The Festo Design Tool 3D allows users to select their required pneumatic drive easily and then automatically places any chosen accessories on the cylinder in accordance with their needs. The tool can be simply installed with a few easy-to-follow steps by visiting the website.

The new CAD configuration tool can be accessed through the Festo online shop suite or downloaded for offline use. It offers users, including engineers, buyers and installation technicians, more confidence and a reduced workload. Featuring a simple graphic overview, the tool enables automatic and error-free selection and placement of accessories such as mountings, clevises, sensors and fittings and eliminates the need for individual file downloads. FDT 3D is a highly efficient way to place an order, saving time for all involved.

“Until now there was always a risk when selecting, configuring, modelling and ordering all the individual parts surrounding pneumatic drives,” says Steve Sands, Product Manager at Festo. “Many individual system components have to be placed manually by CAD designers, compiling long bill of material lists to be ordered with plenty of potential for error. Using the Festo Design Tool 3D, these inadvertent errors can be avoided and the days of ordering each individual component are over. Producing complete assembly models in a wide variety of native CAD formats significantly reduces the number of CAD model downloads and the time to produce a complete drawing of the assembly.”

Once the order is complete, the FDT 3D generates a product key for each complete solution as opposed to one for each component. Designers are then given a choice of how they would like to receive all the parts - either pre-assembled in accordance with their design or as a ‘PrePack’ of individual components ready to assemble in-house. Online they can immediately obtain their company’s pricing and delivery lead time information.

“Offering users zero configuration errors, a single part number per solution and just one package for all components, the Festo Design Tool 3D is the modern, lean and efficient way to order cylinder assemblies with accessories,” concludes Sands.

New battery library for system simulation!

Allows engineers to reduce risks and costs by incorporating battery behavior in their system-levels models.

Maplesoft™ has released the MapleSim™ Battery Library, an add-on component library to their advanced system-level modeling tool. The MapleSim Battery Library allows engineers to incorporate physics-based predictive models of battery cells into their multidomain models so they can take battery behavior into account early in the design process.

Enables engineers to allow for
battery behavior early in
the design process
This is a modern approach to physical modeling and simulation, dramatically reducing model development and analysis time while producing fast, high-fidelity simulations. With the MapleSim Battery Library, engineers can include battery behavior in their system-level models, allowing them to understand how the battery will behave as part of the greater system. With this information, engineers can optimize battery and system performance, and reduce the risk of undesirable effects such as battery overheating.

The MapleSim Battery Library supports both equivalent circuit and electrochemical battery models, and includes parameter identification tools for determining model parameters from experimental data.

It can be used in any modeling project that involves batteries, including consumer electronics, electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, power electronics, and energy storage in power generation applications. Typical projects include battery load analysis and optimization to maximize the time between charges; hardware-in-the-loop testing of Battery Management Systems; thermal modeling and cooling system optimization to stabilize battery temperature; and State of Health effects on charge/discharge efficiency and thermal runaway.

“Battery behavior plays a significant role in so many of today’s products,” says Paul Goossens, Vice President of Engineering Solutions at Maplesoft. “With MapleSim and the MapleSim Battery Library, engineers now have the tools they need to understand how the battery will behave as part of the overall system early in the design process. They can optimize the design, and save significant amounts of time and cost by detecting and avoiding problems before they occur.”

MapleSim and the MapleSim Battery Library are part of Maplesoft Engineering Solutions, which provides both products and services to help engineers reduce development risk and bring high quality products to market faster.
