That bottleneck between quote and drawing.

Why every custom configuration costs the engineering team two weeks.

A customer requests a custom configuration. Sales configures the matching variant that same morning in the CPQ system. And then the waiting begins: in many machine-building companies, it takes engineering two weeks or more to turn that into a matching 3D model, drawing, and bill of materials. The reason: configuration data from sales doesn’t flow automatically into the CAD system — engineers have to rebuild it manually. Every variant gets modeled twice, at the cost of time and accuracy.

What design automation in Lino Hub actually does.
Lino Hub CAD Automation addresses exactly this interface. The module translates configuration results generated in sales directly into CAD commands. Parameterized CAD models automatically generate the matching drawings and bills of materials — without an engineer manually rebuilding the model. For industrial companies, this can shrink configuration-to-drawing time from days or weeks to minutes.

This works because Lino Hub acts as middleware, centrally managing product data behind parameterized CAD models. It makes that data available to sales and engineering throughout the order process. Changes to a configuration automatically update the corresponding models — regardless of whether it’s a standard variant or a custom configuration.

Bidirectional data flow Instead of a one-way street.
A key difference from classic CAD automation solutions lies in the bidirectional data exchange with PDM, PLM, and ERP systems. When an assembly changes in CAD, bills of materials and item master data update automatically in the ERP system. This happens without manual transfer, fully automated and verified. For manufacturing, the process can be extended all the way to CAM programming: machine code can also be derived directly from the configuration.

For data exchange with external partners or approval workflows, the system supports both native CAD formats and neutral formats such as STEP and IGES. Impact on lead time and engineering capacity
Depending on the product portfolio and variant scope, engineering effort for standard variants can be reduced by up to 70 percent. That doesn’t mean engineers do less work. Routine tasks disappear, freeing capacity for more complex development. For companies with many variants or frequent custom configurations, this directly shortens quote and project lead times.

Conclusion.
CAD automation via Lino Hub doesn’t replace engineering work itself — it replaces the recurring, rule-based derivation of models, drawings, and bills of materials from configuration decisions that have already been made. On top of that comes the time advantage from bidirectional data exchange with all relevant enterprise systems. Anyone who wants to see how this translates to their own system landscape can request a live demo based on a concrete use case.

More than 1000 3D models available.

More than 1,000 product 3D CAD models in the Moore Industries online catalogue are now available for download in multiple file formats for use in most popular CAD design systems.

Moore Industries Engineering Director Bob Myles commented that “The 3D CAD models will make it much easier for our customers to integrate Moore Industries products into their system designs by reducing fabrication time and shortening the overall engineering timeline”.

This new feature of the online catalog provides a pop-up 3D viewer that allows the visitor to see different views of the selected product, rotate the model to any viewing angle and zoom in to view detail. Models can be downloaded and saved for use in 3D CAD systems for inclusion in panel designs, process loop and system designs.

The 3D files are compatible for many popular CAD systems including Pro/ENGINEER, Autodesk Inventor, SOLIDWORKS, Parasolid, AutoCAD, Catia, IGES, Anvil, CADKey, IronCAD, Mechanical Desktop, ACIS, SDRC I-DEAS, and Unigraphics in 3D formats .IGS, .NEU, .PDF, .SAT, .STP, .X_T, and 2D formats .DWG and .DXF. Products that feature a 3D CAD model are identified with a “3D View” icon, and a download button is available on each product page.

Dropping standard product models into a CAD design streamlines the engineering design process, makes it easier to source products for purchasing, simplifies installation and maintenance, and can shorten lead times for stocking spare products.

Software partnership for launch in North Wales learning centre.

The EPLAN software and partnership with LCA Group, is due to be unveiled to students at the Coleg Cambria Learning Centre on Thursday, 21 October 2021. The event will include presentations by Alan Sheppard, MD at LCD Group,  and Nick Tyson, Vice Principal of the college’s Institute of Technology. It will also provide students with a foretaste of the system’s capabilities, including its automated data input, how to create 3D electrical system design models, and developing a digital twin as the foundation for efficient production.

Alan Shephard
Alan Shephard says: “LCA Group already supports a robust apprenticeship programme to grow the talent and teach the future workforce how to compete in today’s environment. The partnership with EPLAN is a first step in a wider LCA Group programme to help now establish even closer ties with the college. We want to also give students additional, first-hand experience of electrical engineering, with visits to our facility, access to our experienced engineers and, of course, the continuation of our apprenticeship scheme.”

Ken Christie, EPLAN UK Country Director concludes “the partnership with LCA Group and Coleg Cambria lends itself perfectly to aligning student skillsets with that of current industry trends and requirements. By supporting students with their use of EPLAN software, students will have experience of using relevant tools, therefore building their confidence as they prepare to join the workforce.”

EPLAN is committed to encouraging and supporting new entrants into the engineering profession, offering its software free of charge to higher education colleges and training centres to help support apprenticeship training. The only cost to the college is an annual charge for access to both the expert team on the EPLAN helpdesk, access to the EPLAN Data Portal, and for annual software updates.

LCA Group based in Hawarden (CYM),  have a long history of recruiting apprentices from Coleg Cambria and identified EPLAN’s Education solution as a potentially great opportunity to help local students get on the path to a successful career in engineering.

The Coleg Cambria & LCA Partnership

After working with EPLAN since 2017 and establishing a strong relationship, EPLAN’s offer to higher education establishments was brought to the LCA Group’s attention by their account manager, Simon Jackson. From there, and in a British first, LCA Group and Coleg Cambria agreed that the college would use EPLAN in their upcoming courses, and that LCA Group would financially support the annual charge for students to gain access to EPLAN support, which includes software updates and helpdesk facilities, for the next 5 years. Coleg Cambria is a higher education college with six sites across North East Wales. Rated Excellent by Estyn (Education and Training authority in Wales), Coleg Cambria is one of the highest performing colleges in Wales, and it’s anticipated that more than 200 students each year, five engineering courses (BEng, HNC, BTEC Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Enhanced and Extended groups) plus IMA (Day Release) will benefit from this partnership.

In addition to software and support being provided, EPLAN will also be providing lesson plan materials to ensure that students have an identical learning experience to that which EPLAN provides direct to its customers, and full training on the software for the course lecturer.

Teaching students to use CAE (computer aided engineering) software is a new venture for the college – and a relatively new development for British engineering. Prior to EPLAN’s software, electrical engineers had to use mechanical engineering CAD (computer aided design) packages to create their designs. EPLAN’s software offers a bespoke system, with a proven capability to increase efficiency and facilitate an easier path between design and production.

Dan Jones, Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, at Coleg Cambria IoT advises: “Having access to EPLAN will mean our learners now have the opportunity to understand how modern industrial electrical panels are designed. Using an industry-standard CAE software system will provide them with valuable experience in creating and interpreting industrial panel electrical schematics.

“Coleg Cambria has a long history of working in partnership with employers across NE Wales and we continue to develop our teaching resources in line with advances in manufacturing technology.

“We (Coleg Cambria Institute of Technology (IoT)) hope to further develop our training to include advanced fault-finding skills and techniques, in order to better prepare our electrical engineers for the future; EPLAN will undoubtedly assist in this area.”

LCA Group’s EPLAN Systems Implementation

LCA Group is a leading engineering company based in Hawarden, and can testify to the efficacy of the EPLAN CAE software having been an EPLAN customer since 2017. The company has implemented a suite of EPLAN systems during that time including:

  • EPLAN Pro-Panel. Generates 3D electrical system models, creating a digital twin as the foundation for panel production.
  • EPLAN eVIEW. Cloud-based, cross-team system allowing real-time collaboration.
  • EPLAN Smart Wiring. Provides engineers with routing, end points, cable designation, plus the size and colour of each wire.

All these solutions interface seamlessly with LCA’s other investment on the shop-floor - its Rittal manufacturing automation systems. The combination has transformed the company’s product development and manufacturing processes, however, the issue the company faces is finding skilled staff to maintain its workforce.

Alan Sheppard, managing director of LCA Group, advised: “Finding the right talent is a perpetual challenge for every business, but for electrical engineering companies like ours there is the additional shift in how we deliver for the requirements of Industry 4.0, and the challenges and opportunities that brings.

“Our teams will be required to manage systems and data to develop, design, read and understand engineering concepts and systems as well as using this information in ever more automated environments. CAE software packages such as EPLAN will become standard in the very near future and it is critical that those coming into engineering adopt these now so they are industry ready.

“Full automation is a long way off, if ever truly achievable so we will still need skilled technicians and engineers to use and operate these systems and equipment – and to do the skilled work that can’t be done through automation.”

Award winning catalogue for designers.

Festo has developed an award-winning online catalogue that provides designers with a time-saving tool kit and prepares the way for the creation of an Asset Administration Shell, or Digital Twin, for their machines.

Preparing technical data for incorporation into Asset Administration Shells will become increasingly important for designers in the future, but the ability to collate complex data quickly and accurately also has relevance today in responding to the pressures and constraints of working under lockdown and recovery conditions.

Festo has been building on its digital product catalogue using eCATALOGsolutions technology from CADENAS for many years. Its achievements were recently recognised when Festo was awarded the CADENAS Golden Catalogue Seal for its comprehensive digital 3D CAD product catalogue. The Golden Catalogue Seal has been awarded to only 24 out of more than 800 catalogues in the Strategic Parts Management PARTsolutions as well as the 3D CAD download portal PARTcommunity.

"Thanks to CADENAS' technology, we can offer our customers CAD data in multiple file formats for more than 33,000 products in several hundred thousand variants," says Jürgen Herr, Head of Customer CAD and Digital Media at Festo. "In addition to pure CAD geometry, we place great emphasis on kinematics functions, discontinuation information, eCLASS classifications, product-specific links to our product catalogue, and seamless integration into product configurators during the creation process. As a result, we support our customers with consistent and high-quality CAD data even in the early stages of product selection and design."

Error-free product selection
The Festo online catalogue integrates a product configurator, automatic 2D dimensioning for CAD components, and product data in at least three languages. These features are independently checked by the CADENAS quality assurance department. Intuitive configurators facilitate product selection in addition to providing intelligent 3D CAD models as digital twins in over 150 common native and neutral CAD formats.

Engineers and designers can select their Festo components easily and quickly, while the software copes with the immense number of variants to combine them. For example, the Festo 3D Design Tool supports the assembly of sub-systems such as actuator + mountings + sensors + flow controls quickly and reliably with no chance of errors.

For standard part number components this eases a repetitive, time consuming task. For complex configurable assemblies it is all too easy to make mistakes that historically required correction in multiple locations e.g. CAD drawings, fluid-power circuit diagrams, general assembly drawings etc. The catalogue software supports systems such as customised air preparation systems, multi-module electro-pneumatic valve terminals and complete 3-axis cartesian handling systems.

Compiling technical documentation files is equally simple and error-free, whether the design involves off-the-shelf standard components or complex configurable sub-systems. This saves many hours or even days of time by bringing all the required data together in a digital, error-free format. Providing digital data in a standard semantic format lays the foundation for incorporation into an Asset Administration Shell the kernel of a Digital Twin.

From cad to control with one software.

Fuzzy Logic Robotics is to announce the first release of Fuzzy Studio™ during Hannover Messe Industry 2021(12 - 16/3/2021). This is heralded as a game changer for unlocking flexible robotic production

Both industrial and collaborative robotics are too costly at present for truly flexible production due to the complexity of software and integration. Today, only a few handling applications, such as pick-and-place, have been made truly accessible to non-experts and thus cost-effective for flexible production. The vast majority of robotic and cobotic applications, however, require complex and heterogeneous software tools and brand experts.

These tools require significant training and expertise. As a result, more than 75% of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a robot are related to software training and services in standard mass production. In flexible production, this number can skyrocket to over 90% of the TCO and kill the potential return on investment of the robotic system.

Fuzzy Studio™, just launched, is an easy-to-use and universal software platform which reduces robotics programming costs by 10!

With Fuzzy Studio™ any factory can automate with robotics quickly, simply and cost-effectively - even for complex applications in processing, dispensing and welding.

➔ Intuitive and simple like a video game.
➔ One standard interface for all brands of robots.
➔ Industrial grade precision and performance for real time control of the robot.

It covers all of the steps in the integration of a robotic workcell: from pre-project, design, and commissioning to real-time production control, inline reprogramming and maintenance. Designed to accelerate robotic uptake and usage for all stakeholders, from major manufacturers to small and medium-sized businesses, to systems integrators and even robot OEMs.

A comprehensive collection of robot models from the supported brands and filter by specification is available. Quickly construct a robotic system with high fidelity and interactive CAD and 3D objects. Formats supported: 40+ formats including industrial CAD STEP and IGES.

Customers may select from multiple tooling options from top manufacturers or import custom designed tools.
All supported tools are plug and play compatible.
No more confusing lines of code or coordinate systems.
Visually construct tool trajectories.
Modify trajectories in real-time, see the changes in 3D, and execute them directly on the real robot.

They may drag and drop 3D CAD objects into the design and proprietary algorithms automatically generate tool trajectories, which avoid collisions, save time, enhance performance, and reinforce safety. Turn hours of meticulous labor into a few easy clicks.

Thanks to proprietary algorithms, users can easily swap any robot with two clicks in their design to find the right one for the job. All trajectories and processes are automatically re-computed and incompatibilities can be fixed easily.

Thanks to deterministic real-time control algorithms: “what you see in simulation is what you get in reality”. Deploy an entire application with one click to the production robot and bridge the gap between simulation and reality. Monitor and adjust processes directly and in real-time.

Bridging the digital divide engineering, manufacturing and beyond!

Aegis Software has significantly expanded capabilities in their latest FactoryLogix® 2021.1 release. This most recent release adds native, vendor-agnostic support for any 3D Mechanical CAD (Computer-Aided Design), including animations and annotations, interrogation of detailed part data from PLM, quality data collection against the actual digital twin, and many other new feature enhancements throughout other areas of the solution.

Manufacturers can natively merge the real world with the digital world into a real Digital Twin. This forms a seamless bridge between the PLM that may be hosting either or both ECAD (Electronics Computer-Aided Design) and 3D mechanical engineering to the shop floor.  The first singular MOM/MES platform to natively achieve a truly end-to-end Digital Thread and a Digital Twin for any form of discrete manufacturing. Accelerating time-to-market, propelling productivity, increasing revenues, and improving quality are a fraction of the benefits manufacturers can achieve.

“Manufacturers today are realizing the functional and business value of meaningful non-redundant data from their manufacturing system. We at Aegis see the true Digital Twin and Digital Thread as a critical prerequisite to achieving that. And to achieve the Digital Twin and Thread, the solution must be built upon the design data of the products being manufactured. The native support of all PCB design file types, as well as all major 3D mechanical CAD, enables our customers to use any PLM platform they wish and carry the design ‘Twin’ through the entire process and out into the field using FactoryLogix. This capability places our customers in a unique competitive position, as FactoryLogix is the only single solution able to deliver this true Digital Thread and all the benefits to analytics, traceability, and quality that come with that,” said Jason Spera, Co-Founder, and CEO, Aegis Software. “The expanded support for 3D CAD integration also further enriches FactoryLogix’ unprecedented unique ontological data model, delivering out-of-the-box contextualized analytics and providing a single source of truth.”

FactoryLogix 2021.1 utilizes the extended capabilities in many 3D CAD formats to give manufacturers abilities that ECAD cannot support.  Abilities such as leveraging solid model animations that R&D built into the files, accessing detailed information about each part, enabling operators on the floor to spin, explode, explore, and cross-section the assemblies in front of them in a virtual way. It provides operators interactive and animated visual work instructions, enables capture defects right against the physical model, and merges that data with existing IIoT data feeds to provide total visibility and traceability unlike any other platform on the market today.

Digital Factory Planning.

In digital factory environments engineers very often face the challenge of too detailed CAD models generating heavy data and therefore preventing a smooth handling in factory planning software tools. A new 3D_Evolution Simplifier function now automatically generates envelope geometry especially for all major visualization tools. Due to the strong reduction in the number of elements, the Simplifier enables a smooth and fast processing of large CAD models.

The latest version of renowned conversion and simplification software 3D_Evolution Simplifier of the German-French company CoreTechnologie (CT) is now also available with a new DGN interface, completing the wide range of interfaces and formats for all major digital factory planning tools.

The 3D_Evolution software reads 3D formats such as CATIA, JT, CREO, NX, Solidworks and STEP without a CAD license and automatically generates envelope geometries based on the exact, original model. The unique technology extracts the inner geometry of the models and creates an outer shell as a closed volume for conversion into CAD or factory planning systems such as Microstation, Process Simulate or PDMS. In addition to deleting the internal geometry, holes, fonts, radii and other details that are unnecessary for the planning process are also removed. Subsequently, the internal bodies can be identified and automatically deleted by a so called "Shrinkwrap" tool. Thereby, only bodies that are visible from the outside and relevant for the planning process, are retained. In all stages of simplification and conversion healing functions ensure that geometry errors in the CAD models are analyzed and cleaned up in order to generate volume bodies, i.e. closed solid geometry.

A new simplifier function enables even further simplification by creating minimal envelope bodies. Details such as energy chains or special section tubes are replaced by envelopes, which after simplification only contain a fraction of the original amount of data. The automatic process, which is very quick even when simplifying large amounts of data, reduces the elements of typical assemblies by up to 95 percent. Formats like DGN for Microstation or JT and STEP allow the transfer to the common visualization systems.

The simplification enables an impressive compression of the CAD models. In this way, large CAD assemblies such as robot cells or conveying systems are simplified in a very short time and can be handled after conversion in the factory planning software.

With 3D_Evolution CAD assembly structures can easily be converted into a functional product structure which necessary for the simulation. With just a few clicks, the user disassembles or "flattens" the original assembly structure in order to merge the parts of the simplified model in such a way that subassemblies and bodies that belong together in terms of the simulation are restructured in a new and now functional orientated assembly structure.

Automated calculation of the optimal packaging.

CoreTechnologie GmbH (CT) has added another innovation to the 3D_Evolution Simplifier software: As the first software on the market, the latest version of the Simplifier now allows for a fully automatic calculation of the smallest sphere diameter that surrounds a part or an assembly. With the new function, additional to the generation of a reduced envelope geometry models the Simplifier enables a time-saving and automated calculation of the optimal packaging.

In addition to the diameter calculation according to DIN EN ISO 8062-1, minimal packaging dimensions can be calculated in the form of a box and output as a CAD model of any major format. The determination of the smallest possible packaging dimensions, i.e. the smallest possible space, is used, for example, to optimize logistics costs and to minimize the cost of materials for packaging individual parts or assemblies with a very complex shape. In the past, this used to be a time-consuming manual process that can now be carried out automatically within seconds.

The 3D_Evolution Simplifier software is used by leading companies for fast and automatic data simplification as well as for the conversion of CAD models of all common formats such as Catia, NX, Solidworks, Creo, Inventor, Step, JT and many more. The creation of an envelope geometry is the solution to work smoothly and quickly with extensive and often too detailed 3D original data in CAD, VR and simulation systems. In terms of data quality, the tool enables the conversion of perfect solid models through data analysis and correction functions. In addition to protecting the know-how by creating the envelope models, the sophisticated technology at the same time also significantly reduces the file size as well as the elements that have to be displayed.
