Automation blogger par excellance.

Recognition for an instrumentation on-line pioneer.

In the early days of on-line communication, in the days of dial-up in the early nineties Read-out ventured hesitingly to explore the new frontier! Suddenly a new world, well actually an old world, became more available on our desktop.

Gradually we began to be able to communicate frequently with Instrumentation People with whom we only had an occasional contact at conferences, exhibitions and through publications. People like the late Dick Morley (Father of the PLC), Journalists like Walt Boyes and Gary Mintchell, Automation entrepenaurs like Jim Pinto, and so many others throughout the world.

Companies involved in automation were slow (in virtual terms) to harness this resource. Ours is a fairly timid and conservative group of engineers. Smaller companies were first to use it. But it was a fairly difficult job to persuade the larger entities to allow never mind embrace it!

Among the pioneers among the "Big Boys" was Emerson and they were fortunate to have on their staff a champion for this resource. Jim Cahill was and still is "Emerson Automation's Chief Blogger & SocialMedia Leader." He not only talks about the range of instrumentation and philosophy of his own company but also is a useful source for information on theory, technology and development in the automation sector as a whole.

In those early days the "internet champions" made contact with each other and established friendships across the globe. Occasionally at conferences they met up.

I was at an ISA Exhibition & Conference in Mobile (AL USA) when I got a message. "Are you here?" It was Jim Cahill. I responded and asked where he was. He said he was in one of the lecture halls at the back to the left hand corner of the room. And so he was. In those days battery life expectancy in laptops was short so it was important to be close to a power point which explained the left hand corner! And that was how I met Jim.

I have met him a few times since them at various parts of the world. Of course we keep track of each other on the various on-line platforms. Links to two of those are given below both in Duesseldorf (D) 12 years apart*.

This has been the case with other automation professionals as well.

Jim still mantains his place as one of the pioneers in using this medium through "Emerson Automation Experts" and recently it came as no surprise to find this in the top US automation podcasts recently.

Well done Jim, may your efforts continue to virtually flourish to the benefit of automation and instrumentation.

Laser design in Welsh University.

Photon Design has partnered with Cardiff University to deliver a two-day, laser design course, as part of its physics curriculum. Students begin the course with laser theory and end by producing practical laser designs and models. The students gain hands-on experience of Photon Design’s CAD software, using its FIMMPROP simulation tool to create laser component designs, circuit simulations, and layouts. Students then progress to Photon Design’s PICWave to produce a complete design workflow with three-dimensional, time evolving, laser modelling. The course provides hands-on experience of how advanced simulation tools can simplify and accelerate the laser design process, producing functional laser designs within just two days.

Alex Edwards, Scientific Advisor at Photon Design, who delivers the course, said, “The unique partnership with Cardiff University gives students valuable, real-world, industrial laser design experience, modelling physics in action. Within two days, students produce manufacturable laser designs, clearly demonstrating the simplicity, speed, and efficiency of the simulation tools and connecting academic theory to practical industry skills.

“The course includes simulating photonic components like MMIs, rings, and tapered waveguides with FIMMPROP. Introducing this EigenMode Expansion (EME)-based simulation tool is often pivotal for students, as they experience its impressive speed compared to the more familiar FDTD method. With EME, we conduct equally thorough simulations in seconds, not the hours required by FDTD, making it possible to iterate laser designs efficiently and an essential part of the process.

“PICWave offers students many advanced physics effects, essential for modelling cutting-edge lasers. This covers optical mode propagation, thermal effects, carrier diffusion, and how their combined coupling will impact laser gain, ensuring the laser design meets individual application requirements.

“Our partnership with Cardiff University provides valuable feedback that helps to enhance our laser simulation products, informing and improving our next-generation of laser simulation tools.”

Research facility in venerable university.

Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca – also known as UBB – is the oldest university in Romania, reaching back to 1581, and standing as one of the pinnacle institutions of Romanian academia. This is due to both its centuries-old heritage and its constant focus on future areas of study, research, and innovation. Recently, the Faculty of Engineering in Reșița, a branch of UBB, was able to access a program funded by the West Regional Development Agency to equip the research laboratory with a Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machine, with the aim of training students' skills.

Mitutoyo MiSTAR 555 coordinate measuring machine defining the X and Y axes by measuring the part's outer cylinder.

UBB houses 50,000 students and features a distinctive multicultural profile in the European university landscape. The university has three major lines of study: the Romanian line of study, the Hungarian line of study, and the German line of study, offering also other languages for instruction, such as French, English, etc.

Although UBB took over the responsibility for the Faculty of Engineering in 2020, the academic history of Reșița goes back even further. The first technical students began their studies here in 1971. At that time, Reșița's rapidly developing industry needed engineers, and they filled this need.

As an integral part of UBB Cluj-Napoca, the Faculty of Engineering aims to provide initial and continuing professional training through bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, as well as specialization/advanced training courses in fields relevant to the regional needs. Another component of the Faculty of Engineering's mission is to support the business and public institutional environments through applied research on relevant topics to this region. The high number of engineers from Reșița recruited to research and production teams in the country and abroad, is a testament to the high quality professional training provided by the University.

“The Faculty of Engineering has – and has had over the years – teaching staff with rich experience in the industrial environment, who bring added value to teaching and research activities. The major fields of study addressed are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and applied computer science. In addition to coursework, our students also carry out activities within student circles, develop their own research (at their level), and manage to participate in many national competitions on technical topics," said Prof. Univ. Dr. Ing. Gilbert-Rainer Gillich, the dean of the Faculty of Engineering (right).

To ensure students the best mix of academic education and practical experience, the Faculty of Engineering decided to invest in high-performance technological equipment. Thus, through a program financed by the West Regional Development Agency, the educational institution managed to access the necessary funds to equip its own research laboratory with a Mitutoyo MiSTAR 555 coordinate measuring machine (CMM).

MiSTAR 555 is a 3D CNC coordinate measuring machine, which is highly reliable because of real-time temperature compensation technology that guarantees accuracy over a wide temperature range.

Commenting on the new Mitutoyo measuring machine purchase, Prof. Gillich said: “We wanted this machine because it is a high-performance piece of equipment, and with the educational software packages provided, we can train students, provide them with skills and competencies that are required by private company in the region. We were fortunate enough to receive a good offer from Mitutoyo, which led to our purchase of a top-notch machine.”

Relying on decades of experience, Mitutoyo equipment is precise, reliable, and robust, a prerequisite when these machines are used frequently by students. In addition, Mitutoyo offers educational software packages with 20 licenses, high-quality training, and technical support. The software is easy to use, intuitive, and provides detailed reports, which is another critical request for both teaching staff and researchers.

"MiSTAR 555 is used in numerous laboratory experiments across several disciplines. We manage to create applications very close to industrial ones, in the sense that measurements are taken on parts received from industry partners, new parts, or parts with a certain degree of wear. The dimensions that this machine can accommodate are 500x500x500 mm, and the accuracy is 2.2 microns," Prof. Gilbert-Rainer Gillich said.

Components manufactured today are more complex than ever, with a greater diversity of parts and tighter tolerances than ever before. This necessitates the enhancement of quality control and other metrological processes in the manufacturing process.

“The machine uses MCosmos software for dimensional measurements, and with the Geopak, CAT1000, and Scanpak component modules, you can perform precise measurements by touch scanning or point measurements for parts across the industry.”

At an advanced level of research, for both master's and doctoral students, a high-tech solution like this was the best choice for keeping up with future engineering and technological concepts. Now, with the help of Mitutoyo Romania, this was possible.

"Why do we like this machine? Besides its capabilities, the machine offers a user-friendly interface and allows the generation of measurement programs in an intuitive way. The educational software packages allow us to work simultaneously with groups of students. We particularly appreciate the availability, flexibility, and promptness with which Mitutoyo Romania offered us support, both for laboratory activities and for industrial applications. The training on how to use the machine was interactive and oriented towards practical applications. I confidently recommend Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machines to both private company and universities," Prof. Gilbert-Rainer Gillich concluded.

High perforamnce Formula EV for students.

High performance electric cars are being developed across Europe for Formula Student, an engineering education competition like no other. The team from Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal may have a secret weapon in the form of a test bench based upon a wireless torque sensor.

Formula Student (FS) aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering. It is designed to test students’ abilities and demonstrate their capabilities to deliver a complex and integrated product in the demanding environment of motorsport.

Entry into the competition usually forms part of a degree-level project and is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from university to the workplace. Many FS participants go on to have amazing careers either in motorsport or elsewhere.

Sensor Technology Ltd has supplied a TorqSense system to the Formula Student team at Lisbon’s renowned technical university, the Instituto Superior Técnico, so that they can develop a high performance electric motor for their car. Their efforts will be doubly impressive as the power/weight ratio will far exceed any previous electric motor development undertaken in Portugal.

FST Lisboa is one of Portugal’s most successful Formula Student teams, having been actively involved since 2001. With seven prototypes from past events, the team has achieved national recognition for its innovative engineering and project management. In fact the team’s fourth car was the first ever high performance electric car developed in Portugal, while its 2017 design was the first four-wheel drive electric prototype completely developed in Portugal.

This year the team, composed of students from several engineering courses (Mechanical, Naval, Electrical, Aerospace, Informatics and Industrial Management), is pushing to even greater heights and developing its own electric motors.

Henrique Motta, who is studying industrial engineering and management and is also Sponsor Manager for FST Lisboa, explains that this year’s entry is based on the team’s previous electric car which was the first to have all-wheel drive transmission. Thus much of the focus is now on developing, testing and refining the electric motor.

He gives some details: “TorqSense has an important role with us. We have been developing our own electric motors for the past two years and now we are starting to build production units that will be fitted into the car, which is designated FST 08e. As a very important part of the motors’ development, we need to test them rigorously and log huge amounts of performance data so that we can analyse it and work toward an optimised final design.” The TorqSense sensor will allow the team to measure the motors’ torque to predict its behaviour once installed in the car. They will be testing motors to their limits in the test bench, so should eventually be able to predict completely how it will perform in all circumstances.

The testing regime has been developed so that the TorqSense will be used in all bench tests to fully model all the performance characteristics of the prototype motor. The tests will go a maximum speed of 20 000rpm and maximum torque of 30Nm.

TorqSense has often been used in dedicated test benches, for prototypes as varied as wind turbines, industrial fans, windscreen wiper motors, unmanned drones and model aircraft as well as for many electric vehicle projects. It is often the preferred solution because, being wireless, it is easy to set up for each new test run and does not require a large amount of wiring and slip ring setting each time.

However FST Lisboa says it was primarily attracted to TorqSense because of its connectivity, as Motta explains: “TorqSense allows us to easily connect other hardware and software solutions using USB or CAN bus. We also like the ease of use of Sensor Technology’s software products such as TorqView and the ETD Transducer display, which make the visualisation and logging of data a simple one-step process.”

Prize from European Parliament.

The 2022 AER Summer Academy is one of two Irish projects selected as winners of the prestigious ‘European Citizens’ Prize’ for 2023.

Awarded every year by the European Parliament, the European Citizens’ Prize goes to projects “organised by people or organisations that encourage mutual understanding and closer integration between people in the EU, cross-border cooperation that builds a stronger European spirit, and EU values and fundamental rights.” The 2022 Summer Academy was selected alongside ‘The Shona Project’, social enterprise for womens’ empowerment, as winners of the award for Ireland.

As part of the European Year of Youth, the theme of 2022 Summer Academy was “A Europe for the Next Generation/Eoraip don Chéad Ghlúin Eile”. Organised by the Assembly of European Regions (AER), the 2022 Summer Academy was hosted in Ireland for the first time by AER members, Donegal County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta, the regional state agency for the Irish-speaking (Gaeltacht) regions of Ireland. 150 delegates from 19 regions across Europe were welcomed to the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Letterkenny, and the gteic@Gaoth Dobhair enterprise hub.

Over a week of debate, discussion and study visits, delegates worked together to shape solutions to the major challenges for the next generation; empowering young people in decision-making by connecting them with regional leaders, ministers, members of the Irish and European parliaments, the Council of Europe and European Committee of the Regions.

The programme included debates on youth participation in regional politics, and a range of workshops on rural entrepreneurship, the bioeconomy, the Ukrainian refugee crisis, youth mobility, the future of skills, tourism and remote working. It also included study visits to Derry/Londonderry City to learn about cross-community initiatives to support the Peace Process, Glenveagh National Park and Údarás na Gaeltachta’s ‘gteic’ Gaeltacht remote working hub in Gaoth Dobhair,  The Summer Academy was supported in part through a grant from the Irish Government’s ‘Communicating Europe’ Initiative.

Welcoming the news, Mícheál Ó hEanaigh, AER Vice President for Youth first thanked the members of the 2022 Summer Academy Organising Committee, and said "The Assembly of European Regions is honoured to have been selected as a winner of the European Citizens’ Prize alongside the Shona Project. The 2022 AER Summer Academy showed beyond doubt that initiatives led by young people are transforming Europe from the bottom-up and for the better. Whether it is in supporting refugees, addressing climate change or strengthening civic participation, their resilience, creativity and community spirit demand a greater say in decision-making at all levels. The AER will continue working with young people to ensure they have a real say in shaping the Europe they will inherit.”

From the hosts, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Councillor Martin Harley stated that “On behalf of Donegal County Council, I would like to congratulate the Assembly of European Regions, Summer Academy Organising Committee, our co-hosts Udarás na Gaeltachta and my colleagues in Donegal County Council on this prestigious European Citizens’ Prize award that recognises the diligent work and commitment of all concerned to creating a positive future for young people across Europe. We were delighted to host the Summer Academy in 2022 in County Donegal, which attracted over 150 participants from 19 different regions and 18 different countries, which along with this award demonstrates the wide reaching and diverse nature of the AER Summer Academy event.”

“It is wonderful that this prestigious prize has been awarded to the AER Summer Academy - a Europe for the Next Generation, which Údarás na Gaeltachta co-hosted in Donegal last year, in partnership with Donegal County Council" said Tomás Ó Síocháin, CEO of Údarás na Gaeltachta. "We were delighted to see so many young people from all over Europe gathered together in Donegal and we were honoured to welcome them to our flagship digital hub, gteic @Gaoth Dobhair in the heart of the Gaeltacht during the event. The Summer Academy in Donegal was an exceptional opportunity to prepare young people to face the common challenges facing all regions in Europe. These are the leaders of the future and the AER Summer Academy offers a chance for these young people to be heard and to engage with some of the most important issues facing us all. Creating the space for informed debate is hugely important in today’s society with the often polarised views facilitated by social media.”

Complete robot training to prepare students for the future of work.

ABB Robotics continues its work to close the global education gap in automation and prepare students for the future of work with the launch of a ready-to-use education package. Comprising a GoFa collaborative robot (cobot), teaching materials and a globally recognized technical qualification, the package is part of ABB Robotics global campaign to help workers thrive in a new era of automation.

The ABB Robotics Education Package has been created to ensure educational establishments can provide highly skilled young people for companies looking to benefit from robotic automation. Although some 80 percent of global educators see automation shaping employment in the next 10 years, only one in four education institutes incorporate robotics into their curriculum *. Barriers include the lack of teachers trained in robotics and automation and the difficulty in incorporating robotics training into the curriculum seamlessly.

“With robotic automation increasingly embraced by multiple sectors, from manufacturing and distribution to retail and healthcare, companies are looking for people with the skills needed to handle robots and automation,” said Andrea Cassoni, MD, General Industries Business Line for ABB Robotics. “By enabling schools, colleges and universities to easily create and run robotics training courses that are recognized by industry, ABB’s Robotics Education Package is closing the technology skills gap by preparing students for the automated workplace.”

The heart of the package is the Education Cell, which features a fully functional ABB GoFa collaborative robot. Mounted on a compact tabletop, the award-winning ABB GoFa is an easy-to-use cobot that helps students learn real-life industrial applications such as pick and place and 3D printing. Students as young as 15 can use the robot, with no need for any prior engineering knowledge thanks to ABB Robotics’ lead-through and ABB’s Wizard Easy Programing.

A comprehensive suite of material gives teachers everything they need to guide students through 12 lessons at basic and advanced levels, taking them from the fundamentals of robotics to more advanced applications and programming. Indus-trial level training material has been adapted by teachers into a student-friendly format, enabling them to easily grasp robotics concepts. A total of 56 hours of content is provided, including videos, interactive online exercises, 400 test questions, and lab exercises with ABB’s RobotStudio® offline programming tool, which is used by companies worldwide to plan, simulate and develop real-life robotic solutions in a virtual environment.

The third part of the package is a unique, globally recognized STEM certification for both teachers and students supported and authenticated by educational research and credentialing organization STEM.org. This allows teachers to be certified by ABB and then certify their students as competent to use robots. It also provides students with an accepted qualification that can be shown to employers in over 80 countries as proof of their ability to work with robotic automation.

The launch of the Education Package marks the latest step in ABB’s ongoing drive to help students develop the skills they need to thrive in a world where robots will be as common as laptops in the workplace. ABB currently works with educational institutions in over 40 countries to ensure that students are able to learn the fundamentals of robot program-ming and operation.
