Seagrass restoration.

Mouser Electronics has announced its latest initiative supporting British seagrass conservation. In a project led by marine conservation experts, components supplied by Mouser have enabled the development of an innovative underwater harvester prototype that aims to accelerate seagrass seed collection, making large-scale restoration faster, safer, and more precise.

Seagrass meadows are among the most valuable coastal ecosystems on Earth. They stabilise sediments and reduce wave energy, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges, while improving water quality by filtering pollutants and excess nutrients. These underwater biomes also serve as biodiversity hotspots, providing habitat and nursery grounds for fish, invertebrates, and endangered species that underpin global food security and local fisheries.

Beyond their immediate ecological benefits, seagrass meadows act as a powerful carbon sink, storing carbon up to 35 times more efficiently than tropical rainforests and accounting for around 10% of the ocean’s carbon, despite covering only 0.2% of the seabed[1]. However, researchers have found that at least 44% of the UK’s seagrass has been lost since 1936, with up to 92% likely to have vanished over longer time spans[2] – underscoring the urgency of conservation and restoration.

About the project.
One of the greatest challenges in seagrass restoration is that manual seed collection is slow and costly. This project brings together engineers Sam Rogers and Edwin Towler from Tandem Ventures, with Mouser Electronics, to develop a prototype for Project Seagrass, a global marine conservation organisation. This pioneering system aims to collect seeds up to 100 times faster than manual methods, opening the door for larger-scale seagrass restoration worldwide.

Mouser supplied the project with a wide range of components, including the Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) EVAL-ADXL362 Evaluation Board, Espressif Systems ESP32-S3-WROOM-1/1U Wireless Module, STMicroelectronics LSM6DSOTR 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), and connectors from JST and Hirose Electronics. The performance of these components ensures that the project’s requirements for high-precision sensing, data processing, and reliable operation in challenging underwater environments are fulfilled, helping to advance seagrass conservation efforts.

“We are very proud to be part of this endeavour, supporting the restoration of ‘underwater rainforest’ environments. It’s exciting to see technology helping conservation in such a tangible way,” comments Mark Patrick, Director of Technical Content, Mouser Electronics. “Mouser strives to demonstrate how innovation can accelerate ecological restoration without compromising scientific integrity or operational safety.”

This initiative is an example of Mouser’s focus on corporate social responsibility and follows on from Mouser’s previous sustainability projects, including the whale research and conservation program and the planting of thousands of trees across the United States and Europe, one for every ADI order in 2023.

Training engineers through adveisor programme.

Mouser Electronics has announced its sponsorship of the adveisor programme at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), one of the leading universities in Europe for electrical and mechanical engineering.

The TUM adveisor programme is a one-year soft skills programme designed for first-year electrical engineering students. The course is designed to provide real use-case challenges to develop skilled and knowledgeable engineers who are able to communicate confidently, project-manage and master the dynamics of effective teamworking.

“At Mouser, supporting students is rooted in the company’s foundation.’ states Mark Patrick, Technical Marketing Manager, EMEA at Mouser Electronics. “The students of today are the engineers of tomorrow and the adveisor programme will help them to apply their learning to real world challenges – empowering innovation through practical problem solving and effective communication.”

Mouser kicked off the partnership by delivering a collaborative workshop at TUM with Arduino and Red Pitaya on the fundamentals of circuit theory and pulse measurement in December of last year. The first workshop was held by Mouser’s in-house engineers Rafik Mitry and Aly Barakat.

“We’re thrilled to have Mouser’s support and collaboration on the adveisor programme,” commented PD Dr.-Ing. habil. Dirk Wollherr, at TUM. “We think Mouser’s involvement brings real value to the electrical engineering students, supporting them to develop their skills through interactive workshops.”

Mouser and TUM’s shared ambitions to nurture the next generation of engineers and empower innovation has enabled a strong start to the programme and successful partnership moving forward together.

Semiconductors and electronic components outlook steady in EMEA.

Steady growth for the company in the EMEA market this year is predicted by Mouser Electronics . With over one million parts available to sell, the company has what is considered the widest selection of products worldwide and has broadened its line card by adding more than 170 new manufacturers in the last two years.

Mouser anticipates that key drivers for 2023, including 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, robotics and electric vehicles (EVs), coupled with many applications across the industrial, transportation, communications and data sectors, will continue to accelerate overall consumption and demand for semiconductors and electronic components.

"Supply chains continue to improve, and inventory is a crucial factor for mapping this year's growth," expressed Mark Burr-Lonnon, Senior Vice President of Global Service and EMEA and APAC Business. "Thanks to our unique business model, we are in a strong position with $1.6 billion (USD) in inventory."

While industry forecasts project some levelling out of the market, compared to recent years of steep growth, Mouser expects a good year with roughly 5-10 % revenue growth in the EMEA region, not only in sales but also through product portfolio additions, facilities' expansions, and adding to their roster of 1,200 manufacturer partners. Additionally, Mouser continues to invest in its commitment to deliver best-in-class customer service with its 10 Customer Service Centre branches across EMEA, employing more than 250 staff members.

In 2022, Mouser's EMEA market saw a 30.4% increase in sales, while total global revenue increased by 25%. Key regions include:

● 36.9% revenue growth in Germany
● 41.8% revenue growth in the Great Britain
● 33.2% revenue growth in France
● 22% revenue growth in Italy

In the last several years, to accommodate growth, Mouser has greatly expanded its distribution operations, including the investment of an AutoStore, as well as the world's largest installation of 138 Vertical Lift Modules (VLM) to assist with order processing at its Global Headquarters and Distribution Centre, located in Texas, USA.
