Quantum dot laser simulator.

Photon Design has officially released its HAROLD QD, quantum dot laser simulation tool.

HAROLD QD enables engineers to model a quantum dot (QD) laser’s multi-layer, graded epitaxy structure, including dot size and distribution. It has an eight-band, K.P-based modeller to calculate the energy levels of the quantum dots, where previously it was six-band. As an evolution of the company’s HAROLD, hetero-structure semiconductor and laser simulator, developed over many years, HAROLD QD enables engineers to produce 3-D stress and strain models for each quantum dot shape. From this, HAROLD QD also allows engineers to calculate QD laser gain and absorption spectra, which reliably match the results of quantum dot lasers in field tests.

Dr. Dominic Gallagher, CEO of Photon Design, said, “OFC is the leading, global exhibition for the optical communications and networking supply chain; an ideal platform to officially launch HAROLD QD. Quantum dot lasers are critical to next-generation data centres, AI, and HPC applications and HAROLD QD puts Photon Design at the forefront of their design. QD lasers offer unparalleled, high-temperature operation, when compared to existing lasers, along with superior modulation, data transmission performance and power efficiency. They also bring practical, silicon-based manufacturing benefits, where quantum dots can be grown directly on silicon waveguides.

“HAROLD QD enables engineers to work in a single, integrated environment for gain materials, including InP and silicon. Seamless integration into Photon Design’s PICWAVE, to give engineers three-dimensional, time evolving, quantum dot laser models will follow.”

PCL and PCSEL design enablement.

Photon Design Ltd., a leader in photonic simulation CAD software, is now providing PCSEL and PCL design solution for laser designers, by using a combination of its HAROLD and OmniSim, simulation tools. PCSELs (Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers) and PCLs (Photonic Crystal Lasers) are rapidly becoming the first choice of laser for high-power, coherent applications in fast-growing markets, such as optical communications, sensing, and material processing. They have complex crystal structures that are challenging to model, but which are now made possible, entirely within Photon Design’s simulation tool portfolio.

Dr. Dominic Gallagher, CEO of Photon Design, said, “Engineers designing PCSELs and PCLs can use Photon Design’s HAROLD to simulate gain spectra in epitaxy structures. OmniSim, our FDTD-based, Dynamic Gain modeller, then simulates pulsed laser light propagation, over time, through the laser crystal lattice, including the effect of power.

“OmniSim’s Dynamic Gain modeller is new. Its Band Analyser provides band diagrams for photonic crystals, enabling designers to tune the laser structure to the desired wavelength, optimising the lattice, atoms and cavities in the structure using our Kallistos simulator. Finally, active FDTD simulations provide the operating wavelength and linewidth of the laser, which our Q-factor calculator produces at up to 85% quicker than the conventional, Fourier transform method, with equivalent levels of accuracy.”

Photon Design is now a leader in PCSEL design with its HAROLD and OmniSim, simulation tools. Existing HAROLD users need only add OmniSim to begin designing crystal lasers.

Digitalised production simulated.

Digitalised production processes can be simulated in detail on a small scale with fischertechnik’s revolutionary Agile Production Simulation, for instance with a driverless transport system and quality control using artificial intelligence (AI). The compact simulation model provides a unique opportunity to learn about and simulate future technologies using a hands-on approach.

The factory of the future has been the subject of many research projects in science and the industry. Future-oriented companies are relying on automation, modularity, artificial intelligence and agility to remain competitive. In order to advance these topics in the industry and research, students, apprentices and members of staff require the corresponding skills and awareness to handle complex issues. This is where the Agile Production Simulation learning concept comes in. It simulates processes such as quality control using artificial intelligence or driverless transport systems on a small scale, recreating automated processes from incoming goods to modular production and quality control. The accompanying educational material translates the hands-on simulated processes into future skills for learners. The model’s digital twin significantly enhances the learning experience.

The Quality Control with AI module from fischertechnik’s Agile Production Simulation facility makes the complex topic of machine learning tangible while demonstrating its uses in a production environment. The model will soon be available for anyone who wants to get to grips with the factory of the future.

Agile Production Simulation is a factory consisting of flexible and combinable modules. Starting at the incoming raw goods, the material flow passes through an automated high-bay warehouse, various production stations such as a milling or drilling station and AI quality control to the outgoing goods. A driverless transport system (DTS) with omniwheels transports workpieces between the individual stations, ensuring an agile production process tailored to customer needs. The DTS can be charged at a charging point without changing batteries, if required.

Each workpiece contains an NFC tag where the production data is recorded for digital traceability. The factory produces workpieces in different colours with various processing features. Agile production enables product-specific manufacturing steps within a lean process without the need for set-up time.

Agile Production Simulation is controlled by a central control system (Raspberry Pi 4 Model B) connected to the controllers of the individual factory modules, SPS Siemens S7 1200. Various communication protocols, such as the MQTT protocol (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport), allow the modules to connect and work together.

Cloud-based real-time monitoring provides dashboards to control processes and visualise the factory status. It can also determine KPIs such as cycle times and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). An online store simulates the customer’s workpiece order process. A moveable camera can be controlled via the dashboard to simulate the principle of remote maintenance.

The Quality Control with AI module makes the complex topic of machine learning tangible while demonstrating its uses in a production environment. Based on the concept of supervised learning, the machine learning modules are implemented with the AI tool Tensorflow.

Agile Production Simulation was developed in cooperation with experts from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the software company OMM Solutions GmbH and the University of Stuttgart. The model will soon be available for anyone who wants to get to grips with the factory of the future.

Evaluation kits simplify and shorten the design process.

Evaluation kits for the high-resolution 18-bit digital pressure sensors in the AMS 5935 series have been announced by Analog Microeletronics GmbH. With the new USB Starter-Kit/Data-Logger AMS 5935 and the Arduino Uno Kit AMS 5935, two evaluation platforms are now available that simplify and shorten the design-in process significantly.

The USB Starter Kit consists of two PCBs, a USB cable and software for a Windows PC. This allows the AMS 5935 to be connected to a PC without any additional components and to read data from the sensor's I2C interface. In addition, the Starter Kit provides the ability to change the sensor's I2C address and to graphically display and save measurement data to a file.

If the developer does not only want to use the predefined functions of the starter kit, but also wants to implement own functions, read out measurement data from the sensor's SPI interface or have more influence on the data analysis, the Arduino Uno Kit AMS 5935 is a good choice. The kit consists of a PCB that is plugged into Arduino Uno's connectors and the software package "AMS". This makes it possible to read out AMS 5935's measurement data with the help of an Arduino Uno in a very short time.

Wether the USB Starter Kit or the Arduino Uno Kit AMS 5935 are chosen, both allow quickly to find out if the sensor is suitable for a planned application.

No design without reason and no place for gimmicks.

Buttonwood's Graham Meller recently interviewed Sauli Laitinen, who has worked in Vaisala’s ‘ideas factory’ in Helsinki for 14 years, to discover what role R&D plays in protecting and enhancing a company’s brand. This is what he learned.

Sauli Laitinen
The guiding mantra in Vaisala’s design department is ‘no design without reason’. It sounds obvious, but what they really mean is ‘no design without a valid reason’ because they believe that too many companies add features to their products that do not add value for customers.

As Head of Design at the Finnish measurement technology company Vaisala, Sauli Laitinen plays an important role in preserving and enhancing the company’s long-standing reputation for quality and innovation. A heavy responsibility, one might suppose, for someone with two degrees in Psychology, but Sauli is keen to point out that good design is grounded in a deep understanding of customer behaviour. After 14 years working in Research & Development at Vaisala, Sauli says: “I am fortunate to be working in an ‘ideas factory’, which is as exciting now as it was when I first started.” So, we took this opportunity to ask him how important product design is at Vaisala, how it affects the company brand, and why there is ‘no design without reason’.

Curiosity
Vaisala’s history stretches back to the 1930s, when the company’s founder invented some of the operating principles of a radiosonde. Curiosity, the desire to meet challenges, and an extraordinary ability to innovate remain at the company’s core. Today, that focus on innovation is as strong as ever, and has enabled the development of a wide range of technologies which are designed to deliver observations for a better world. Employing around 1,900 people, Vaisala now exports 98% of its production to over 150 countries.

Form follows function

Does this feel like a Vaisala product ?
Design is obviously important for any company that develops and manufactures new products, but for Vaisala, design is something bigger; it defines the whole company. When designing products, Vaisala designers ask themselves: “Does this feel like a Vaisala product?” In doing so, they are not just assessing the physical appearance, although that in itself is important; they are also asking if the product meets the customer needs, as well as the highest standards of accuracy, reliability, longevity and ease of use. As Sauli says: “Our customers expect our products to be the best in the market, so we must not, and will not, disappoint them.”

No idea is a bad idea
Ideas for new market leading products can come from a wide variety of sources, but all of them have to offer something that is not currently available, and they have to solve customers’ problems better than any other product. Following the mantra ‘no design without a reason’, there is no opportunity for design effort to be wasted on work that does not add value in the eyes of customers. “Too often,” Sauli explains, “companies develop products, or product features, that add no real value for users. This can happen when designers are out of touch with customers. We therefore go to great lengths to ensure that all of our candidate products are completely user-centric, and designed for their intended application.”

Finding the right problems to solve is a skilled activity. For Vaisala this involves sending product and application experts out to visit and observe customers doing their normal work. Sauli says: “If you just ask people what they want, there is a danger that you only get half the story, so it is important to observe them in their work; to ask the right questions and find hidden needs, which means that the researchers must have a deep understanding of the customers and their businesses. A key area of expertise is the combination of application knowledge and an ability to provide answers to the questions customers didn’t even know they had.”

It was interesting to note that when we spoke with Sauli he never mentioned competitors. When we asked why, he said: “Of course, if you want to be a market leader, you have to constantly benchmark yourself, but from a product design and development point of view it makes no sense to follow competitors. If you do so, you will always be behind the curve. That’s why we are in continuous dialogue with our customers; looking for opportunities to exceed their expectations and disrupt the market.”

Design Concept
Ideas factory
New product ideas are brought to multi-disciplinary workshops involving staff from several different departments. Emphasizing the importance of this, Sauli says: “We need to consider every customer touch-point in the product journey, which means more than just its operation; it also means manufacturing, packaging, transport, assembly, configuration, maintenance, calibration, disposal or recycling. Every step of the product journey is mapped out so that the design team can predict and prevent potential issues.

“We also need to find those hidden opportunities for improvement. For example, if a customer currently completes a task with two people in a set period of time, the design team’s objective might be to enable one person to do it in a fraction of that time.”

Throughout the design process, the team will continue to ask if the product is solving a genuine customer problem, and if it still feels like a Vaisala product. If an idea passes these tests, sketches and mock-ups are created for early validation of concept.

Image
Mock-ups are assessed against how effectively they solve a customer’s problem; how widely the solution would be adopted; how pleasant the user experience would be; how it would be assembled or configured; how accuracy and reliability can be assured, and how good the product will look and feel. All of these evaluations address the perspective of the user, but it is also necessary to ensure that the product fulfils the needs and expectations of the customer, which may include considerations such as service requirements, longevity, price, lifetime cost, materials and lead times.

Mock-up

“The early stages of idea generation and evaluation are great fun,” Sauli comments. “However, once a candidate product passes the concept evaluation stage, things rapidly get serious.”

In addition to evaluations, all products are tested to check their reliability, durability, stability and accuracy in all potential conditions, which means that products have to be tested beyond customers’ expectations. Sauli says: “We regard our specifications as a performance promise, so we test our designs rigorously and repeatedly to ensure that we are able to deliver on that promise.”

Design project example: the smart Indigo family
The Vaisala Indigo family of industrial measurement instruments has evolved in recent years as a result of a series of product development programs with common goals; each of which solved specific customer problems. Indigo is a great example of joined-up thinking in the Vaisala ideas factory. At an early stage, the team realised that if a variety of products could be harmonized as a modular family, they would simultaneously solve a number of important customer challenges.

Indigo Mock-ups

The overall aims of the development work were to enable the continuous flow of data; avoiding process down-times, and improving data visualization. Following an extensive development program, it is now possible to measure all of Vaisala’s key parameters with technologies from within the modular Indigo family, and new products are regularly added to the series.

The Indigo range includes intelligent, interchangeable, standalone measurement probes and optional transmitters; all of which are configurable by Vaisala Insight PC Software. The Indigo compatible probes measure key parameters such as humidity, temperature, pressure, dew point, CO2, H2O2 or moisture in oil. Importantly, each of the smart probes can operate as a standalone device, which provides portability advantages for customers. A key advantage is that processes can operate continuously, because each of the probes can be hot-swapped with another.

Summary
Vaisala’s design philosophy can be summarized in three words: insightful, complete and pure. Insightful development programs are grounded in a deep understanding of customer needs, combined with a determination to find innovative solutions. The solutions must be complete, in that they may involve both software and hardware, working harmoniously to exploit the latest technologies to both satisfy and excite prospective users. Last but not least, the new product must be pure – this means it must be credible and recognisable as a Vaisala product. Furthermore, it must be designed for an actual customer need, setting the highest standards in the market with essential features such as accuracy and reliability in the long term.

Finally, of course, there is no place for gimmicks in the Vaisala ideas factory, because there is no design without a reason.

More than 1000 3D models available.

More than 1,000 product 3D CAD models in the Moore Industries online catalogue are now available for download in multiple file formats for use in most popular CAD design systems.

Moore Industries Engineering Director Bob Myles commented that “The 3D CAD models will make it much easier for our customers to integrate Moore Industries products into their system designs by reducing fabrication time and shortening the overall engineering timeline”.

This new feature of the online catalog provides a pop-up 3D viewer that allows the visitor to see different views of the selected product, rotate the model to any viewing angle and zoom in to view detail. Models can be downloaded and saved for use in 3D CAD systems for inclusion in panel designs, process loop and system designs.

The 3D files are compatible for many popular CAD systems including Pro/ENGINEER, Autodesk Inventor, SOLIDWORKS, Parasolid, AutoCAD, Catia, IGES, Anvil, CADKey, IronCAD, Mechanical Desktop, ACIS, SDRC I-DEAS, and Unigraphics in 3D formats .IGS, .NEU, .PDF, .SAT, .STP, .X_T, and 2D formats .DWG and .DXF. Products that feature a 3D CAD model are identified with a “3D View” icon, and a download button is available on each product page.

Dropping standard product models into a CAD design streamlines the engineering design process, makes it easier to source products for purchasing, simplifies installation and maintenance, and can shorten lead times for stocking spare products.

Supporting technology start-ups!

Anglia Unicorn is a dedicated division to help technology start-ups get off the drawing board and into the market faster from Anglia Components. It was conceived to provide start-ups with the innovative technology ideas they need and offers engineering resources, evaluation hardware and software tools along with samples from Anglia’s world class technology partners, all free of charge.

Commenting on the launch, John Bowman, Chief Technology Officer at Anglia Components, said, “The support offered by Anglia Unicorn has been carefully curated to help technology start-ups and university spin-outs all the way through to venture capitalists, investors and equity funds who are working with technology companies that need help getting to the next level. We want customers to think of the Anglia Unicorn team as their technology adviser alongside their legal and financial advisers. This service isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution. We listen to what companies need, and provide a bespoke programme to meet those specific requirements.”

Although the partnership between Anglia Unicorn and the start-up ideally begins with a concept, in practice, the customer may already have a proof-of-concept based around an off the shelf solution such as a credit card sized single board computer or Arduino-type platform.

Anglia Unicorn is able to offer help regardless of what stage the project is at, they offer start-ups a free confidential consultation where they can discuss the concept, the key project milestones and the ultimate vision for the product. This meeting will yield key technology recommendations to help deliver this vision as quickly, reliably and cost-effectively as possible. This proposal is backed up with support from Anglia’s extensive engineering resource, which includes a highly skilled and experienced field application engineering team, along with access to other specialisations from the Anglia eco-system if needed.

Award winning catalogue for designers.

Festo has developed an award-winning online catalogue that provides designers with a time-saving tool kit and prepares the way for the creation of an Asset Administration Shell, or Digital Twin, for their machines.

Preparing technical data for incorporation into Asset Administration Shells will become increasingly important for designers in the future, but the ability to collate complex data quickly and accurately also has relevance today in responding to the pressures and constraints of working under lockdown and recovery conditions.

Festo has been building on its digital product catalogue using eCATALOGsolutions technology from CADENAS for many years. Its achievements were recently recognised when Festo was awarded the CADENAS Golden Catalogue Seal for its comprehensive digital 3D CAD product catalogue. The Golden Catalogue Seal has been awarded to only 24 out of more than 800 catalogues in the Strategic Parts Management PARTsolutions as well as the 3D CAD download portal PARTcommunity.

"Thanks to CADENAS' technology, we can offer our customers CAD data in multiple file formats for more than 33,000 products in several hundred thousand variants," says Jürgen Herr, Head of Customer CAD and Digital Media at Festo. "In addition to pure CAD geometry, we place great emphasis on kinematics functions, discontinuation information, eCLASS classifications, product-specific links to our product catalogue, and seamless integration into product configurators during the creation process. As a result, we support our customers with consistent and high-quality CAD data even in the early stages of product selection and design."

Error-free product selection
The Festo online catalogue integrates a product configurator, automatic 2D dimensioning for CAD components, and product data in at least three languages. These features are independently checked by the CADENAS quality assurance department. Intuitive configurators facilitate product selection in addition to providing intelligent 3D CAD models as digital twins in over 150 common native and neutral CAD formats.

Engineers and designers can select their Festo components easily and quickly, while the software copes with the immense number of variants to combine them. For example, the Festo 3D Design Tool supports the assembly of sub-systems such as actuator + mountings + sensors + flow controls quickly and reliably with no chance of errors.

For standard part number components this eases a repetitive, time consuming task. For complex configurable assemblies it is all too easy to make mistakes that historically required correction in multiple locations e.g. CAD drawings, fluid-power circuit diagrams, general assembly drawings etc. The catalogue software supports systems such as customised air preparation systems, multi-module electro-pneumatic valve terminals and complete 3-axis cartesian handling systems.

Compiling technical documentation files is equally simple and error-free, whether the design involves off-the-shelf standard components or complex configurable sub-systems. This saves many hours or even days of time by bringing all the required data together in a digital, error-free format. Providing digital data in a standard semantic format lays the foundation for incorporation into an Asset Administration Shell the kernel of a Digital Twin.

Projects from the cloud!

The digital transformation of engineering continues advancing. As part of its cloud services, Eplan prsents a new service for cross-project collaboration – Eplan eManage – letting users upload Eplan Platform projects into the cloud environment and share and work on them there. The free version was launched in mid-March – an expanded, paid version will follow next August (2021).
Innovative cloud services and the systems of the EPLAN Platform are now become increasingly integrated. As a first step, the new software solution EPLAN eManage Free was launched. This free, cloud-based software enables the easy uploading of projects from the EPLAN Platform and web browsers into the secure ePulse cloud environment. A fee-based version of the software will be released later this year to offer expanded functionality.

Cross-project collaboration
EPLAN eManage makes it easy to upload, manage and share projects in the cloud. Since today’s ecosystem of industrial automation is characterised by many media discontinuities when processing and transferring docu-mentation, the advantages of this system are clear: the EPLAN Platform systems in connection with this new cloud service will network control cabinet manufacturers and panel builders, OEMs and system integrators as well as machine and plant system operators. They all work together in a central project that can be synchronised on the EPLAN Platform via eManage in roundtrip engineer-ing. Clear access rights and role assignments ensure data security and provide flexibility for project access. Users of EPLAN Electric P8 and EPLAN Pro Panel are already benefitting from these integrated processes whereby they can easily upload their projects into the cloud and transfer them back to the EPLAN Platform for further processing.

Direct data transfer to EPLAN eView
Users also need just one click to publish their project data directly in EPLAN eView. This allows defined stakehold-ers the opportunity to look and comment on entire projects. It further enables cross-company review processes to be digitally implemented. And thanks to this clear, central availability in the cloud, eManage supports project participants in quickly searching for specific content.

Synchronised, current data
EPLAN eManage means that the EPLAN Project is synchronised for all project participants and stakeholders. Changes in the project are visible to all participants and the project documentation is always current – across the entire project life cycle and even into operations and service scenarios.

Efficient data management can save time and money during design.

New digital services are now available to simplify the data management of Harting products and solutions.

Behind every electrical engineering project are many individual components and a wide range of data: 2D/3D CAD data, data sheets, type sheets and certificates are all part of the documentation trail.

"Comparatively more time is spent on article research and the collection, conversion and storage of related documents than on the design itself," says Andreas Wedel, Director of Digital Transformation at the Harting Technology Group. That is why he and his team are working on new functions that will improve the data management for their products and solutions.

"Many of our customers still use the old HARTING catalogues, not so much out of nostalgia, but because they are full of notes and bookmarks," explains Wedel. “We wanted to make this practical way of working also possible in our online catalogue.”  The option to add items to wish lists has been available in the Harting eShop for a long time. Thanks to a new update, it is now possible to add text notes to individual articles. These notes can be managed and filtered via the myHARTING customer portal.

Saving time with data packets
Additional functions are aimed at the rapid provision of product data and documents that are necessary for electrical design. The design data, data sheets and type sheets for all individual components often add up to hundreds of documents. Previously, these had to be downloaded from the provider (including Harting) in individual steps. Using the new data manager, product data for up to 50 Harting articles can now be obtained in a single step from their website as a collected data packet.

50 different 2D/3D data formats for direct download
Up until now, HARTING has provided design data for its products in STEP and JT formats. In practice, however, significantly more formats are used. Therefore, many Harting customers still had to convert the data into their desired format. With the new MultiCAD download function, native 2D/3D CAD data is now available for download in over 50 different formats. This means that articles can be processed immediately in the desired data format for design purposes. This MultiCAD function is currently available for over 13,000 items in their online catalogue.

Customer portal offers many options
This new functionality can be found in the myHARTING customer portal, which already provides many e-commerce services. "Anyone who is professionally involved with our products and solutions can easily register and use all the services at myHARTING free of charge," explains Andreas Wedel.
