EX Submersible pressure sensor.

The LS-1000 submersible pressure sensor from WIKA is now certified in accordance with the European ATEX and international IECEx directives. The sensor continuously measures the level of liquid media in industrial environments. Thanks to the new approvals, companies can now also use it in hazardous areas of ATEX zone 0 and 1 as well as IECEx zone 0, 1 and 2. This applies to numerous applications, for example in the process industry, wastewater and environmental technology and power generation. Typical applications include wastewater lifting stations, pumping stations and oil and fuel tanks.

The LS-1000 measures levels hydrostatically from 1 ... 10 m [3.28 ... 32.81 ft]. Optimal long-term stability of 0.2 % ensures precise measured data and minimal signal drift. Thanks to its robust design, the stainless steel submersible pressure sensor is permanently sealed in accordance with ingress protection IP68. A specially developed cable provides effective strain relief, and potting of the cable inlet provides additional protection. Each individual device undergoes a helium leak test during the final inspection. Even the smallest leaks and hairline cracks are detected here.

The submersible pressure sensor is maintenance-free, minimising failures, downtimes and total cost of ownership. It can be operated with a 5 V battery, as the energy-saving ratiometric 0.5 ... 4.5 V output signal consumes less than 5 mA. This places such a low load on the battery that it does not need to be replaced for years.

Compact Ex command devices.

A new series of Ex command devices currently being launched by the steute business division Controltec features flexible and direct integration in machine and plant enclosures within Ex zones 1 and 21.

The Ex ES 97 series is based on the Ex 97 series of position switches. This series is already well established in complex application fields, most particularly explosive zones, and has dimensions to EN 50047.

The switching system of this series (slow action, 1 NC/ 1NO, positive break NC contact) is extremely robust and durable. The separate terminal compartment to ignition protection class Ex e facilitates flexible connection of cables directly inside the terminal compartment of the command device. Thanks to the compactness of the dimensions (installation diameter just 22.5 mm), the Ex command devices are easy to integrate in the surrounding structure.

The new Ex command devices are initially available in three versions: with a push button, a latching selector and a standards-compliant emergency stop button. All variants are suitable for use in Ex zones 1 and 21 (gas Ex and dust Ex). Additional actuator variants are available on request.

This Ex ES 97 series perfectly complements the steute Controltec range of command devices for explosive zones. To date, users could choose between the Ex 14 series with connecting cable and the Ex BF 80 in a robust plastic enclosure with a terminal compartment. This is a third option in the series.

Ex solenoid interlocks.

The steute business unit Controltec has a new addition to its product range: the Ex STM 515 series of Ex solenoid interlocks with ATEX and IECEx approvals. This series's purpose is to keep guard doors and maintenance flaps locked until dangerous movements inside machines and plants have come to a complete standstill. They are also able to perform this task – and this is typical of steute "Extreme" switchgear – in adverse conditions and Ex zones.

These new Ex solenoid interlocks have a robust die-cast aluminium enclosure which ensures durability even with extreme wear and tear. Multiple coatings (passivation, priming, powder coating) guarantee a high degree of corrosion protection classes IP66/67. The electrical connections are well protected inside a terminal compartment.

Additional practical features of the Ex STM 515 series include an actuator head which can be positioned in 4 x 90o increments. The mounting of the interlock is thus flexible, which together with the compact design make installation very versatile.

Equally typical for steute switchgear is a modular design with a range of additional functions. Users can choose, for example, between the closed-circuit or open-circuit principle, and can also optionally select both a manual release (from the access side) and an escape release (from the hazard side).

The new solenoid interlocks in the Ex STM 515 series can be used in accordance with their ATEX/IECEx approvals in Ex zones 1 and 2 (gas Ex), as well as 21 and 22 (dust Ex). Typical application fields which steute had in mind during the development phase include guard doors and maintenance flaps on mixers and screening machines, as well as packaging plants for powdered or dusty goods. This makes the Powtech 2023 the perfect venue for the launch of these new Ex safety switching devices.

Displacement sensors including safety features.

Three derived displacement measurement formats for linear, rotary- and tilt-angle position sensing are manufactured by Positek. Their comprehensive range covers high-precision linear position measurement up to 1500 mm and angle measurement between 5° and 160°. These precision displacement sensors feature Positek's own PIPS® inductive position sensing technology.

These sensors offer exceptionally long life and superior reliability through characteristically high shock and vibration resistance in a non-contacting and long-life design that scores favourably against, potentiometer, LVDT/RVDT and magneto-strictive sensor technologies. Several years’ experience in supplying its sensors into oil & gas, mining, marine, hydraulics and numerous other harsh industrial and otherwise challenging environment applications has directed the Company to develop several variant models that have ATEX/IECEx and CSA certified approvals for hazardous gas/vapour and hazardous dust atmospheres.

Positek’s intrinsically safe sensors are presented in groups covering ATEX/IECEx and CSA approved sensors for gas/vapour and for dust atmospheres. There is also a separate group for mining environment approved sensors. Almost all of Positek’s standard linear and rotary sensors have optional intrinsically safe approved counterparts within these groups. Through each product series, options typically cover a choice of IP rated sealing, and some offer submersible versions with sealing to 350 bar. ATEX/IECEx sensors for gas/vapour have an ‘X’ designation whilst dust has an ‘E’ designation. CSA versions carry ‘G’ and ‘H’ designations respectively, whilst mining uses ‘M’.

These designations are better described using an actual sensor product as an example. One of Positek’s popular linear sensors is its P100-series hydraulic/pneumatic cylinder position sensor. In its standard product offering, this robust and durable 35 mm diameter in-cylinder mounted sensor for hydraulic pressures to 350 bar has a built-to-order measurement range up to 1485mm. It’s fluoropolymer-sheathed probe and stainless-steel target tube construction has a choice of IP65 or IP67 environmental sealing. Providing an effectively infinite resolution and a precision linearity to 0.25% FS, the sensor can perform over a working temperature range of -40°C to +125°C depending on the type of electronic output selected. Its impressive shock and vibration resistance of 40 g and 10 g to IEC-68-6 and -29 respectively is complemented with an MTBF of 350,000 hrs 40°C Gf.

P100 35 mm diameter in-cylinder mounted sensor
This 100-series sensor is available across all the various intrinsically safe versions and is operated with Positek’s X005 galvanically isolated amplifier which provides either 4-20mA or 0-10V output. With IP67 sealing, the mechanical precision, EMC performance, and shock/vibration resistance are consistent with the standard product. Intrinsically safe versions have a typically reduced temperature range over their standard counterparts of -40°C to +80°C. For each intrinsically safe product group, the applicable standards met for the 100-series are as follows:

  • X100-series ATEX/IECEx approved sensors for gas/vapour - Ex II 1G
  • E100-series ATEX/IECEx approved sensors for dust - Ex II 1GD
  • G100-series CSA approved sensors for gas/vapour - Class I, Zone 0 Ex ia IIC T4 / AEx ia IIC T4
  • H100-series CSA approved sensors for dust - Class I, Zone 0 AEx ia IIC T4 / AEx ia IIC T4 AEx ia D IIIC T93°C
  • M100-series, intrinsically safe for mining - Ex I/II M1/GD

Comparable specification differentiation between standard sensors and their intrinsically safe counterparts apply across a comprehensive range that includes more than fifteen product versions for each of the ATEX/IECEx, CSA and mining environment groups. These sensors include standalone short- and long-stroke linear position sensors in standard or slim-line housings, large- and small-angle rotary position sensors, tilt sensors and gauge head position sensors.

The company offers ATEX, and CSA approved galvanic isolation amplifiers that are recommended for use throughout the intrinsically safe sensor range. These amplifiers provide tri-port isolation between the amplifier power supply, the hazardous area and the sensor’s X005 output signal.

Where the application requires a sensor to be modified to suit specific customer requirements, Positek offer a comprehensive custom design service which in some cases can be fulfilled within days.

Oil content in refrigerants.

Determining the oil content in the refrigerant circuit often brings challenges for users. Sampling is difficult due to the high pressure in the circuit. In addition, the refrigerant evaporates as soon as it is removed from the circuit. In some cases, this is compounded by the fact that flammable gases, such as propane (R290), are used as refrigerants. Of course, this goes hand in hand with special requirements for the measuring systems. Particularly in large-volume test stands, which are often located in research and development centers, a special degree of protection is therefore required.

SensoTech has the solution for these cases: LiquiSonic® OCR determines the concentration of the oil directly in the refrigerant circuit in real time and without sampling - even in potentially explosive areas. This means that users who previously had to resort to other measuring methods due to the increased explosion level can also use the measuring system. The sensor design is Ex-certified (ATEX, IECEx) and complies with industrial standards. The pressure sensor integrated in the system also complies with these regulations (ATEX, IECEx).

LiquiSonic® OCR is maintenance-free and provides very precise measurement results. This has been convincing customers for years. When monitoring oil in refrigerants, the system achieves an accuracy of ±0.1 wt%, depending on the oil and refrigerant used. Once installed, it provides permanent real-time readings and requires no maintenance.

SensoTech has already measured a variety of oil/refrigerant combinations for customers in its in-house laboratory test stand. For example, mixtures with oils such as ND11 and DAO 190 (CPS). Other combinations can be surveyed at any time in the SensoTech laboratory.

The complete measuring system comes with a process adapter, is plug&play and ready for use immediately after installation. The controller reliably shows the concentration, the prevailing pressure as well as the temperature of the process liquid. It offers the possibility to store additional product data sets (calculation models), which allows a quick reaction to changing refrigerants or oils. Of course, the measured values can be recorded and transferred for further analysis. Due to the robust sensor design, LiquiSonic® does not require any maintenance.

EX remote camera for monitoring hazardous areas.

The MCE-MRC-EX camera, which is ATEX approved for use in Zone 1 & 2 hazardous areas has been launched by Meteor Communications

“Hundreds of our cameras are currently in operation all over the UK; helping to monitor and protect remote assets such as grilles, screens, channels, culverts and drains,”
explains Meteor MD Matt Dibbs. “However, many of our customers in the water, waste, construction, rail and aviation sectors need to also monitor hazardous areas, so the MCE-MRC-EX camera was developed specifically to meet that requirement.”

Zone 1 & 2 hazardous areas are those in which there is a risk from the accumulation of an explosive gas. Typical locations therefore include confined spaces where there is a source of gases such as methane or petrochemicals, so the main applications for the MCE-MRC-EX camera will be in sewage and wastewater infrastructure, as well as in underground assets such as drains, culverts and pumping stations. Remote cameras can now be deployed in these locations to provide remote visibility of threats such as flooding.

The new camera is housed in an IP66 Ex-rated enclosure and an inbuilt IR or white light illuminator provides excellent low-light performance for clear, crisp images in any conditions. Images are transferred in real time via 4G with 3G/GPRS fallback, providing robust image transfer even from areas with poor mobile coverage. Images are sent to the ‘Meteor Cloud’ for secure viewing and analysis online, and there are options for those users wishing to integrate the images with their own applications.

The main advantage of remote cameras is that users are able to view sites remotely before deciding whether a visit is necessary, and also to determine what resources would be necessary for that visit. This means that less site visits are necessary, and wireless connectivity also means that operations such as camera configuration and firmware updates can be conducted remotely.

Importantly, all Meteor cameras allow direct connection of local sensors such as level switches and PIR sensors. Images can be delivered at scheduled intervals and be configured to trigger automatically from local sensors; providing additional images and alerts to users and entering enhanced polling modes.

Summarising, Matt Dibbs says: “The MCE-MRC-EX remote camera has a very low power requirement, whilst delivering high-quality, real-time images from remote assets within Zone 1 & 2 hazardous areas where data and mains power connections may not be available.”

Only flame arrester of its kind.

The pre-volume deflagration flame arrester for pressure measuring arrangements from WIKA has an IECEx approval in addition to its ATEX approval is the only one of its kind. It is thus gaining broad international acceptance.

The safety device (model 910.21) fulfils the requirements of the harmonised standard EN ISO 16852:2016 “Flame arresters …”. WIKA combines them with Ex-approved measuring instruments and diaphragm seal systems to form a fixed unit. Such a measuring arrangement is suitable for mounting to zone 0.

The pre-volume deflagration flame arrester prevents a potential passage of the flame from the instrument into the process side, in the event of a failure. A marking on the measuring arrangement indicates the point at which the protected side begins.

HMI in Ex Zone 1.

For toluol supply facilities in zone 1, the customer required a system with a zone 2 panel by Siemens as well as the touch function of the twelve inch widescreen TFT display retained even under harsh industrial conditions.

Quintex GmbH was able to win an order with a leading manufacturer and OEM for sealing systems in the automobile industry together with its customer, Göhler Anlagentechnik.

Different solutions for the potentially explosive area like, for example, overpressure solutions, powder filling or intrinsically safe systems could not be realised for technical and or economic reasons, as a custom version would have been required.

For this project, this would have been too restrictive. For the customer, the Quintex Overpressure System was the most flexible and efficient.

The advantages were obvious:
• a high degree of flexibility and design freedom
• easy installation and maintenance
• overall, more cost efficient and technically efficient than other solutions
• therefore, a standard panel by Siemens could be used
Another special feature was to realise the enclosure with a special painting in accordance with customer requirements. Local control functions provide for safe usage and allow for external operation without having to open the enclosure.

At first glance, the Quintex solution may not be different from a conventional control system. Only experts can make out the difference by spotting the compressed air supply and the Ex type label of the overpressure control for zone 1 potentially explosive areas.

There are no additional components at the exterior of the enclosure.

With the system, by automatic clearance measurement inside the enclosure with an approved, stationary gas detector, the non-existence of an Ex area can be verified and, with the overpressure during operation, a non Ex area can be retained.

Only when no flammable gas is detected in the enclosure and, in addition, the pressure inside the enclosure, as specified in the Ex standard DIN EN 60079-2, is maintained, the following electrical components will be switched on. The customer only has to ensure that, for the cabinet, electrical supply and industrial compressed air is available.

Quintex allows for the zone 2 panel to be operated with complete functionality of a touch screen in zone 1 in this special solution.

The touch screen is implemented with a special foil, which is flushed with compressed air. This design guarantees explosion protection even in case of damage. As high overpressure is not required to flush the enclosure, the foil is not endangered at no time.

To save space, all the components are premounted on plates inside the enclosure by Quintex. The costumer receives an overpressure-proof cabinet. This allows for the final installation to be carried out within the manufacturing facilities of the customer.

With this system, small enclosures as well as large floor-standing cabinets can be realised. The implementation is proven by practical experience. It offers a high degree of freedom for self-assembly, without risking the required safety. The mounting plate is delivered with all the required overpressure components, proven in accordance with the Ex criteria, by Quintex.

Specifically with the maintenance of the system and failure-free operation, the Quintex implementation offers obvious advantages and a high degree of customer benefit. It is an extremely efficient and safe solution when dealing with production down time / interruptions. The system can be easily and rapidly switched on again.

This solution is tested and certified by two independent certification bodies. Thus, safe usage is guaranteed in zone 1 and 21 as well as in zone 2 and 22.

Many of the systems sold by Quintex are application-specific solutions, with which the problem and solving the problem for the customer are the main focus.

Customers may also buy the electronic components required for monitoring the non-Ex area from Quintex and to use their own cabinet.

Ex enclosures.

Pepperl+Fuchs has reinforced its position as a supplier of Ex-equipment with the introduction of the SR series. The new stainless steel enclosure series joins the GR series, made of glass fiber-reinforced plastic, in the range of the process automation specialist. The new series tops off a portfolio of highly flexible and cost-effective control and distribution solutions in type of protection Ex e (Increased Safety).

Initially, several versions of remote I/O enclosures will be available following the market launch of the SR series, which is geared toward the requirements of the oil and gas, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. These versions will be continuously supplemented by further options, such as terminal boxes and control stations, control units, switch disconnectors and safety switches, and fieldbus solutions, so that users can benefit from a complete portfolio in the future.

The SR series—in durable stainless steel—comprises more than 30 enclosure sizes to meet the precise dimension requirements of every intended use. To further increase cost effectiveness, the IP66 / NEMA 4X enclosures are always reduced to a basic version. Any accessories, such as gland plates, hinges, ¼ turn locks, and lid security, are only integrated by Pepperl+Fuchs in accordance with the corresponding customer specification. Various international approvals permit worldwide use in a whole host of applications.

Depending on the application requirements, the enclosures, which are certified for a temperature range of -60 °C to +120 °C, can be mounted vertically or horizontally in the operating location. All SR series versions that are suitable for wall mounting can be screwed in directly using mounting brackets that rotate by 90° or rivet nuts, without further adaptation. If the SR series is used as a control station, the contact blocks can be fixed either to a rail or directly to the enclosure cover.

GR—The Sister Series Made of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Material

GR Control Station
In strategic and technological terms, the SR series complements the established GR series as an addition to the Pepperl+Fuchs portfolio. The GR series comprises a range of IP66 / NEMA 4X enclosures made of glass fiber-reinforced, antistatic, highly resistant polyester. The UV-stabilized material is highly durable and offers excellent corrosion resistance.

The innovative design of the GR series makes mounting considerably easier: decoupled mounting steps mean that even large and heavy enclosures can be installed by a single person. Like the SR series, the GR series offers many different dimensions and options to cover a wide range of application requirements.

The two Ex e enclosure series are linked by Pepperl+Fuchs' overarching service concept, which focuses on maximizing vertical integration and providing extensive support for users at all times. Wireless position switches and sensors for explosive environments.

"Wireless Ex" is a technology developed by the .steute business unit Extreme which simplifies the assembly and operation of switchgear in explosive environments. Switching devices are no longer connected to the receivers in the control cabinet via Ex-compatible cables, but via a low-energy wireless protocol created especially for such applications. It is, of course, certified to ATEX and IECEx standards.

Engineers constructing plants and machines for explosive environments can take Ex RF 96 electromechanical wireless position switches, for example, in their slim rectangular design to monitor the position of moving machine components or workpiece fixtures.

Alternatively, positions can also be monitored without any contact – using Ex RF IS wireless inductive sensors in a cylindrical design (M 12, M 18 and M 30). In this case, the Ex RF 96 ST Ex wireless universal transmitter takes care of both wireless transmission and decentralised power supply to the sensors.

These wireless sensors guarantee high transmission availability even in tricky situations (e.g. coexistence with other wireless systems), as is often the case in an industrial environment.

These product series have now been updated by steute, and their latest versions with new ATEX-/IECEx approval were presented at the SPS 2019. Both the electromechanical Ex position switches and the Ex sensors are approved to the latest ATEX-/IECEx standards for use in Ex zones 1 and 21. The wireless signals require so little energy that there is no danger of explosion, bringing additional flexibility to the design and construction of explosion-proof machines and plants.

The two updated switchgear series are well suited to e.g. mounting on machines and plants in Ex zones which have moving parts or parts which are difficult to access. Because Ex-compatible cable connections are no longer needed, and because the switching devices "radio out" of the Ex zone, installation of the switching devices and gaining of Ex approvals are greatly simplified.

Emergency switches for Ex zones.

With these two series, steute has once again expanded its range of robust "Extreme" switchgear for explosive zones. Typical applications for these devices include international mining, as well as the production of chemicals and construction materials.

The "Extreme" versions of the new steute ZS 92/ZS 92 SR emergency pull wire and belt alignment switches have already been tried and tested in practice. Design features include very robust die-cast aluminium housings with multiple coatings (passivation, base coat, powder coating), a high protection class (IP 65) and significantly reduced actuation force and actuation travel compared to their predecessors. This makes it easier to actuate the emergency stop function and also means reliable fulfilment of all relevant international standards (for e.g. emergency stop switchgear, emergency pull wire s witches or the safety of continuous conveyor equipment).

The emergency pull wire switches in the Ex ZS 92 S series will be available with ATEX/IECEx approvals for zones 1 (gas Ex) and 21 (dust Ex). The belt alignment switches in the Ex ZS 92 SR series will be approved for zone 21 (dust Ex).

Both series have very long lifetimes, even in adverse ambient conditions, and are extremely versatile, for example featuring many different mounting options. These new Ex switches are available in many different configurations for both the actuation lever and the release lever. This means that they can be installed in more or less any conceivable operational position, including for the first time at the back of a machine or belt.

Simple adjustment of the actuation point in 5o steps (between 5o and 35o for two switching inserts) further increases the versatility of the Ex ZS 92 SR in practical applications. The mounting dimensions are compatible not only with its predecessor, the Ex ZS 90 series, but also with other belt alignment and emergency pull wire switches, making it easy to retrofit the new switches on existing conveyors and machines.

The Ex ZS 92 S can be used in temperatures from -10 to +55oC in conjunction with maximum wire lengths of 2 x 100 m. The position of the Ex ZS 92 SR belt alignment lever can be adjusted in 12o steps to suit individual requirements.

Human-machine interface for adverse ambient conditions.

With the new variants in its Ex BF 80 product series, the steute business unit Extreme is not targeting the mass market of human-machine interface users. There is however an essential difference between these new devices and conventional products: they have been developed especially for use in explosive environments and in temperatures ranging from -60°C to +65°C.

The new series comes in three different housing sizes, to incorporate one, two or three elements. Users can choose between various actuators, signal lamps and key switches, including emergency stop buttons and mushroom buttons. All models are suitable for mounting on e.g. machine enclosures, walls or panels – also and especially in adverse environments involving high levels of wear and tear. They meet protection class IP 66 and have been developed especially for all manner of "Extreme" applications.

Following the wishes of some of our customers, steute has now extended its compatible temperature range even further. This has been facilitated through the re-design of all actuators. Hardly noticeable to the eye, the new design includes features such as sealings which are suitable for even lower temperatures.

The extended temperature range down to -60°C is included in the new ATEX/IECEx approval. It opens up additional options for the steute Ex command devices, e.g. applications in shipbuilding, offshore technology and the oil and gas industry. The subzero range of steute Extreme switching devices is thus steadily growing.

The new intrinsically safe EE100Ex from E+E Elektronik is certified according to the European ATEX directive 2014/34/EU and the international IECEx standards for use in gas explosion hazard areas up to zone 1. The humidity and temperature sensor offers high measuring accuracy and is dedicated for demanding climate and process control.

The unit complies with temperature class T4 for intrinsically safe equipment and can be mounted directly in hazardous area. Due to the robust IP65 aluminum enclosure and the wide choice of filter caps, the sensor is suitable for various applications such as utility tunnels, hazardous storage rooms or in the pharmaceutical industry.

The sensor enables highly accurate measurement of relative humidity [RH] and temperature [T] in the range 0...100 % RH and -40...60 °C (-40...140 °F). The combination of robust sensing head, proprietary E+E sensor coating and encapsulated measurement electronics inside the probe ensures excellent measuring performance and long-term stability in harsh and corrosive environment.

The EE100Ex features two galvanically isolated, configurable 4…20 mA, 2-wire outputs. Besides RH and T, the sensor also calculates the dew point [Td] and frost point temperature [Tf].

The device can be powered by any appropriate intrinsically safe power source or via Zener barriers. An error indication at the analogue outputs according to the NAMUR standard facilitates troubleshooting in case of a malfunction.

• E+E Products are marketed in Ireland through Instrument Technology.

Explosion-proof flow measurement.

A new member to Fluidwell's E-Series family, the E115 explosion-proof bi-directional flow rate indicator/totaliser which detects the flow direction with quadrature signal inputs. Such applications can be found by loading and unloading of ships where one bi-directional flowmeter is used. Another application is the correction of back-flow due to shocks in a pipeline caused by piston pumps or valve behavior. It requires two pulse signals from the same flowmeter which are 90° or 270° degrees out of phase.

The E115 saves time, money and hassle; is designed to withstand the toughest conditions and is simple to use. Daily operations and plant operations for running work permit procedures are no longer interrupted and even (partial) plant shutdowns can be avoided as the covers do not need to be opened. Operating and setting the display functionalities is fast, safe and easy thanks to the through-glass keypad. This unequalled bi-directional flow rate indicator/totaliser delivers user-friendliness in the toughest conditions.

The robust stainless steel 316L E-Series housing is designed to guarantee safety. It takes the E115 bi-directional flow rate indicator / totalizer beyond the legislative requirements for hazardous areas. In the harshest conditions of punishing weather, desert and maritime climates and extreme temperature fluctuations, the durable E-Series consistently delivers accurate measurements. A solid die cast aluminum housing with the same ingress protection rating is available for cost-effective applications.

The E115 is extremely practical in use. The through-glass keypad enables you a safe and effortless operation of all functionalities without having to open the cover. The menu, display and navigation structure are designed according to the Fluidwell “know one, know them all” principle, which enhances easy and intuitive control of various Fluidwell totalizers, flow computers and other displays.
