Ring light guides...

Creative Lighting is becoming just as important in the instrument and machinery marketplace as it is in the consumer world – sophisticated lighting adds that “extra edge” to differentiate one product from another.

Multitron has announced the availability of MENTOR’s Ring Light Guides. The shallow, single LED design is believed to be unique, enabling functional and aesthetic added-value to be simply added to the end-product.

A very wide range of applications are possible – for example switches, buttons, knobs, controllers, jacks or logos can all be illuminated. Totally homogeneous lighting is created using just the single LED.

The compact, space-saving design and flat 4mm deep construction means that PCB space is saved and the size of the housing is minimised compared with other solutions, for example a ring of multiple LEDs.

Many LED options are offered: monochrome, duo, RGB, or special colours. Two standard sizes are available with internal Light Guide diameters of 12mm or 16mm, both featuring a lighting ring up to 2mm thick.

Options include a choice of bare wires or wires terminated with a plug. The printed circuit board can be supplied with optional I²C controllers or series resistors.

In addition to the range of standard products, the modular product design enables customised solutions to be rapidly developed from standard products. In many cases, additional tooling costs are either non-existent or very low.

Special sizes are also possible as are special geometries eg rectangles, ellipses, triangles, crescents or free contour-following forms, such as a door lock shape. Depending on the complexity of the solution, one or more LEDs are used to ensure consistently uniform lighting.

Small Form-factor Pluggable.

Article by Henry Martel, field application engineer, Antaira Technologies

In reviewing today's industrial network switches, one of the features that stand out are built-in SFP slots accompanying the standard RJ45 ports. SFP is short for Small Form-factor Pluggable, and it's been an industry workhorse for nearly two decades.

As a standardized network interface, SFP technology enables switches with SFP module slots and ports to connect to network components, either optically or electrically, at distances up to 160km (99.4 miles). This is done by simply inserting the correct SFP module (transceiver) into the switch’s SFP port which, in turn, is connected to either an Ethernet or fiber optic cable. Connecting an industrial switch, server, industrial router, network card, or PC to the other end of the cable establishes the high-speed data communications connection.

Advantages.
First introduced in 2001, SFP has basically replaced GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter) since it is only half GBIC’s size, allowing it to be used in very tight, dense spaces while providing faster, long-distance communication links between industrial switches, routers, and other networking devices and components. In modern networks, small form factors are a constant necessity.

Besides its size, another advantage is SFP’s hot-swapability functionality module. This makes it easier for network administrators to build onto existing networks without the hassles of redesigning the entire copper cable infrastructure. Most SFPs also feature Digital Diagnostic Monitor (DDM/DOM) providing real-time monitoring of parameters such as voltage, temperature, power, and laser bias.

Yet another check in the plus column is that SFP allows users to link aggregate multiple SFP ports. By connecting a single fiber to multiple industrial switches, the result is more bandwidth, redundancy, and load balancing that ensures that if one link fails, it will immediately go on the secondary available link with higher speed and little to no packet loss. Just before that both industrial Ethernet switches for link aggregation should be configured otherwise a network loop will occur.

How to choose.
Deploying SFP links on the network goes far beyond inserting a single fiber transceiver into the Ethernet switch port. To optimize network performance, specify the right single-mode fiber transceiver type for the industrial switch application. Although there are many types of SFP modules on the market, the list can be narrowed down to five form factors: SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, and QSFP28. But before those are addressed, look at some basic information needed to know before purchase.

• Operating temperature: In a production environment a rugged transceiver with an industrial-grade temperature range (-40 to 85° C) is needed, not a commercial-grade one with a more limited range (0 to 70° C). If not, the transceiver may fail in extreme heat or cold, taking the signal and network connection with it.
• Cable types: Match the transceiver to the two-mode fiber or cable planned to use, whether the fiber, copper cable, multimode fiber (MMF), or single, multi-mode fiber (SMF).
• Port speed: This should be obvious but bears repeating. Always match the transmission speed of the transceiver to the port-supported speed. Transceiver speeds range from 100Mbps (SFP) all the way to 112Gbps (QSFP28).
• Link distance: Choose a transceiver that supports the distance between the switch and interface of the device to connect to the switch. Transceiver distances are broken down into: “T” for 100m on Cat5, “SX” for 550m on MMF, “LX” for 10km on SMF, “EX” for 40km on SFM, and “ZX” for 80km on SFM.
• Compatibility: Some manufacturers participate in “vendor lock-in” practices that intentionally prevent third-party SFP transceiver modules from working in their devices. Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) standards have helped to create an open market for SFP transceiver modules.

Types.
Here are the five SFP types mentioned already. These categories may look overwhelming, and this is not even an exhaustive list. However, the good news is that plenty of options are available depending on distance, environmental, and speed requirements.

  1. SFP is widely used for 100BASE or 1000BASE applications running over copper or fiber. Depending on the module configuration, the SFP module data rates can range from 155Mbps to 4.25Gbps with a maximum distance of 160km over copper, fiber or SMF. SFP is based on the SFP MSA standard.
  2. SFP+ modules are the identical size as an SFP module but sport 10G speed. While an SFP+ transceiver module is not compatible with a standard SFP port interface, an SFP+ port will accept an SFP module at reduced speeds. SFP+ can transmit data up to 120km over SMF, and is based on the IEE802.3ae, SFF-8431, and SFF-8432 standards.
  3. QSDP+ is short for “Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable”. QSFP+ has four independent channels of 10Gbps data lines in each direction to support 40Gbps speed. A single QSFP+ effectively replaces 4 standard SFP+ transceivers, resulting in improved port density and cost savings, but it has a shorter working distance, approximately 40km. QSFP+ is widely used in 40GBASE-X Ethernet, data center aggregation, and datacom switch and router connections. Note that there are nine different types of QSFP+ transceivers currently available so it is important that the one that suits the particular needs are identified. Standards for QSFP+ are IEEE 802.3ba, QSFP+ MSA, SFF-8436 and SFF-8636, InfiniBand, and 40G QDR. InfiniBand is an open standard network interconnection technology with high bandwidth, low delay and high reliability. InfiniBand today is considered by many to be a niche alternative to Ethernet in distributed computing systems.
  4. SFP28 is designed for 25G performance per the IEEE 802.3by standard and uses a single lane, rather than four, to support 25Gb/s. As the third generation of the SFP interconnect, SFP28 has the same form factor and appearance as SFP+, plus is mating compatible and backwards compatible to 10G. Besides increased bandwidth, SFP28 offers better impedance control and less crosstalk than its predecessor. Because of this, and its energy efficiency, SFP28 is a popular choice in data center networks upgrading from 10G.
  5. QSFP28 supports fibre channel in 4 separate lanes like QSFP+, yet each single fiber per mode is 25 Gb/s (potentially up to 40 Gb/s) for use in 100G Ethernet networks, 32G Fiber Channel and EDR InfiniBand as interconnections between racks, switches, data centers, campus networks, or long-distance telecom. A QSFP28 module can break out fibre channel into 4x 25G or 4x 10G lanes, depending on the transceiver used, so while QSFP+ can be used on a QSFP28 port at a lower 40G speed, QSFP28 modules cannot be used on QSFP+ ports.
Antaira ERPS Ring
As leaders in industrial networking, Antaira eliminates much of the guesswork of utilizing SFP modules and transceivers to optimize networks. Antaira's managed and unmanaged SFP module-enabled network switches, combined with its SFP modules and cables, give a competitive edge while ensuring reliable performance in adverse industrial and environmental conditions. For instance, Their

XFP module line of 10G optical transceivers is fully compliant with 802.3ae standards, making them ideal for SONET OC-192, SDH STM-64, 10 Gbit/s Optical Transport Network (OTN) OTU-2, and parallel optics links.

Antaira also gives a choice of 46 different SFP modules and various types of SFP+ transceivers to match precise network requirements, with many Antaira models compatible with HP, Cisco, Dell, Brocade, Juniper and of course, Antaira’s own award-winning line of industrial Ethernet switches.

Unique switch technology adds to group expertese.

The Variohm Group is continuing its strategic product range expansion, manufacturing capacity and application solving capability through the recent acquisition of the high-performance magnetic switch and sensor manufacturer, Magnasphere Corporation.*

Magnasphere was founded over twenty years ago, successfully launching its patented high security switching technology as a replacement for security-vulnerable reed switches which are easy to defeat using simple magnets. Whilst competitors had developed expensive and complex alternatives, Magnasphere’s solution offered a low-cost and non-defeatable solution with similar magnetic field strength, product size and with much improved durability over reed switch-based security contacts. Other advantages included higher temperature extremes, no power source required, and excellent resistance to EMI and surge voltages.

Magnasphere’s patented switch technology
The basic principle behind the Magnasphere high security switch involves a magnetic ball held within a durable, hermetically sealed metal housing. In its open state, the ball attaches to a ferro-magnetic base within the housing and is drawn magnetically to a contacting ‘closed’ position when a magnet is moved within an activation zone outside of the housing. This ‘tamper and defeat-resistant principle’ also works where the magnetically charged ball is drawn towards a ferrous target – allowing a very low-cost proximity sensor. This principle also forms the basis for Magnasphere’s low jitter, non-mercury tilt switches – an environmentally safe and competitively priced solution. Magnasphere’s technology perfectly suits high security applications, and its cost and durability also makes it a compelling alternative for reed and Hall Effect switches for industrial and commercial OEM applications.

A comprehensive range of products of security contacts and switches, available in a wide variety of installation configurations and sensing zone alternatives, include recessed and surface mounted variants with single and multiple switch capability. Magnasphere’s products comply with UL -634, Levels 1 and 2 and CE listed equivalents. Magnasphere also manufactures smart motion detectors based on FMCW radar technology.

Variohm EuroSensor provides full technical and commercial support for Magnasphere’s products throughout Europe. Magnasphere’s acquisition brings The Variohm Group to nine sensing, switching and motion control manufacturing companies, offering highly differentiated components and systems across almost all areas of industry. With a total staff of more than 500, including 25 engineers, each Group member has high degree of autonomy but maintains complete access to the Group’s shared expertise and resources – this synergy promises a service and expertise level that is more than the sum of its parts.

As the Variohm Holdings Group expands with this latest acquisition Graham Pattison, Variohm Holdings’ managing director, is looking forward to the opportunities offered. “This latest acquisition further reflects Variohm Group’s collected vison and reinforces discoverIE’s continued investment. Now, with an even more diverse range of products and an increased application capability across the Group, we can extend a more progressive and comprehensive service to our valued customers”.

Joseph Hedeen, Magnasphere’s general manager is anticipating great things from the increased market opportunities The Variohm Group will present. “We are looking forward to working with our new sister companies in The Variohm Group and the cooperation and opportunities on hand from the diversified range of sensing and switching products available”.

*Magnasphere joins the Variohm Group with fellow USA-based members Control Products Inc., from New Jersey (harsh duty position sensing and switching technologies) and Indiana based Phoenix-America (magnetic encoder and magnetic sensors). In Britain are Variohm EuroSensor (sensor and transducer supplier and manufacturer), Herga Technology (switching and sensing solutions), Ixthus Instrumentation (specialist measurement systems), Heason Technology (motion control components and custom engineered systems), and Positek Limited (specialised linear and rotary inductive displacement sensor technologies). The European mainland manufacturer Limitor GmbH (temperature control components) completes the line-up and Variohm EuroSensor also has a German subsidiary and Variohm Group products are extensively served by global distributors.

Is there an object on the conveyer belt?

The new ODT 3C sensor from Leuze transmits both switching and measuring information to the machine control system via IO-Link – an efficient and economical 2-in-1 solution. It can handle both measuring and switching tasks and thus is suitable for a wide range of automated industrial applications

Is there an object on the conveyor belt? If yes: What is its position or distance to the machine? These are typical issues that need to be addressed in a wide range of industrial applications and processes. In the past, to solve this problem required the use of multiple sensors. With the new ODT 3C from Leuze, only a single device is needed: The innovative sensor can transmit both switching and measuring information to the machine control system, which makes it an efficient and economical 2-in-1 solution.

The ODT 3C transmits measurement values and extensive diagnostic data via IO-Link. The data includes temperature values, warnings, and signal quality. It features impressive black-and-white behavior (< ± 3 millimeter at 150 millimeter). The operating range can be easily adjusted via the teach button, remote signal or IO-Link.

The new  sensor also offers impressive functional reliability: Active ambient light suppression prevents faulty switching, even when exposed to direct light from LED building lighting systems. LEDs that are easily visible from all sides allow you to quickly read the status of the ODT 3C. Two independent switching outputs and sensor models with warning output or a small light spot (pinpoint) round of the sensor’s functions. This enables plant operators to use the ODT 3C flexibly in a wide range of applications.

Footswitch!

Herga Technology’s 6256 series heavy-duty footswitch range is aimed at manual control tasks on industrial machinery where durability and consistent reliability are essential. The modular footswitch is available in single- or multi-pedal versions where a comprehensive selection of electrical power and switching options and a broad range of accessories ensure maximum working flexibility.

For applications in especially hazardous environments where additional safety is vital the 6256 is available with a pressure point actuated cut-off feature that can be used to mitigate emergency situations. Should the operator actuate the pedal beyond the pressure point, the switching contact is broken, and the process is interrupted. With the footswitch locked an unintended restart is prevented. To reset the footswitch and re-enable the process the operator must first trigger the top mounted manual release button.

This version of the 6256 is also available with an optional feature that adds a mechanical resistance in the actuation path of the pedal, producing tactile feedback so that the operator can sense the instant the footswitch pressure changes. As well as its use in hazardous control tasks, the ‘DA’ feature is also used for processes that benefit from two-stage switching systems with different operational settings.

Herga’s economically priced 6256 series heavy duty footswitches includes other optional added-safety features. A built-in emergency stop fitted on the footswitch or on an extended pole arrangement allows increased machine safety close to the operator. A pedal lock version will prevent unwanted operation where the switching process needs to be disabled or restricted from improper handling.

Other accessories and options available for the 6256 series include a snap-on protective guard that accommodates safety shoe use whilst multiple footswitch expansion is made easy through an interlocking multipedal base link kit. Washdown and wet environmental use to EN 60529 can be met with an IP67 sealing kit. Extended base plates provide increased stability and pole & handle attachments make for increased portability and ease of operation.

Thanks to its modular design the 6256 offers a range of electrical switching options. These cover slow break & make and snap break & make to AC-15 6A 250V / DC-12 6A 24V (UL) as well as high power rating up to 25A 125/250V AC. 1HP 125/250V AC (with double pole change over contacts - 2 switches). Potentiometer and pneumatic versions are also available.

Built from high-impact injection moulded ABS, the modular design offers toughness and durability. The 6256 is featured in a demonstration video showing its calibre in a series of drop tests against competitive steel footswitches.

Pushbutton module ensures efficient and economic switching.

Big topics of discussion within the lighting sector include sustainability, energy efficiency, low cost systems, connectivity and convenience through flexibility. One solution to address these issues, is the wireless and battery-free ZF RF pushbutton module.

For the connection between lighting components and pushbuttons in buildings, cables are the established solution. This variant seems to be cheap and simple to install at first. Unfortunately, the initial low maintenance can quickly turn into an expensive undertaking. Installing cables creates inflexibility. As soon as it comes to modifying buildings updating cables between lights, actuators or sensors, it involves a huge effort and cost. Renovations require planning, knocking down walls, laying new wires and returning the building to its previous state.

A sustainable alternative based on RF and completely free of batteries and wires is available from ZF. This concept eliminates the disadvantages of wired and battery powered systems. A tiny and compact generator (20.1 x 7.3 x 14.3 mm) produces enough energy by pressing the button by means of induction, so that it can reliably transmit RF commands to a paired receiver. As a wireless solution it guarantees flexibility and the possibility to retrofit easily according to individual requirements. As a battery-free solution and with a lifetime of 1,000,000 switching cycles, maintenance and disposal requirements of battery replacements can be avoided.

The RF light switch module from ZF is the only one which is directly compatible with the RF standard KNX-RF and it supports the RF standard EnOcean3.0 too. In cooperation with onsemi, ZF has published a reference design for an Energy Harvesting Bluetooth5.0® Low Energy switch and a first demo light switch module. It is compatible with standard frames and can also be combined with customer-specific control and design panels.
