Direct drive linear motors.

Performance, versatility and simplicity for machine builders in Europe, North America and Asia.

An addition to its Kollmorgen's IC Ironcore DDL motor family has been announced. This expands beyond 230 VAC products with a new capability to support 400/480 VAC-powered applications. The new direct drive linear motor delivers a continuous force range up to 8,211 N and peak force up to 13,448 N. When powered at higher bus voltages, the motor is inherently capable of delivering its rated force at higher speeds, making it ideal for applications like machine tools, semiconductor manufacturing, battery production and industrial automation that require rapid and precise movement of heavy loads.

“We’re proud to greatly expand the size range, power range and versatility of our direct drive linear motor portfolio with the addition of the high-voltage IC Ironcore DDL,” says Chris Cooper, senior director of product management. “This latest Kollmorgen product enables machine builders to achieve an entirely new level of linear motion performance that differentiates their designs in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.”

Simpler, lighter, more compact machinery.
In environments with a 400 or 480 VAC bus voltage, the IC Ironcore DDL may eliminate the need for a transformer that would otherwise be required to run a motor with a lower voltage rating. In addition, a motor that runs at a higher voltage can perform a given amount of work at a lower amperage level. This lower current draw in a higher-voltage environment may allow for the use of a smaller drive amplifier and a lighter cable set.

With smaller drives, lighter cables and no transformers, machine builders may be able to use a smaller control cabinet with lower cooling requirements. In addition, the IC Ironcore DDL motor also offers a water-cooling option that increases continuous force output by up to 40–60%, potentially allowing specification of a smaller-size motor. All of these advantages support a lighter, more compact, and sustainable machine design that’s simpler and more affordable to build and delivers greater value to both OEMs and their customers.

Enabling versatile solutions for customers worldwide.
Another key benefit of the IC Ironcore DDL motor is that it enables OEMs to serve global markets without significantly redesigning their machines for each region. The 230/400/480 VAC bus voltage rating meets the needs of most customers across North America, Europe and Asia. The motor is UL and CE Certified — plus RoHS and REACH Compliant — simplifying the approval process for selling machines in each target market worldwide.

The IC Ironcore DDL motor joins Kollmorgen’s complete lineup of direct drive linear motors including the ICD Ironcore Low Profile DDL and the IL Ironless DDL. When paired with AKD® or AKD2G servo drives, these motors offer ultimate precision, smoothness and reliability for demanding applications. AKD2G dual-axis servo drives can even synchronize two motors — for example in an x/y table application — while saving even more space in the control cabinet.

High-pressure relief valve.

The launch of a full-flow high-pressure relief valve (FHPRV) for the Danfoss H1B bent-axis motor has been announced. The FHPRV joins the counterbalance valve (CBV) in a portfolio of valves designed to enable the use of Danfoss high-power axial piston motors in open-circuit systems. The FHPRV enables machine designers to leverage the benefits of the H1B motor’s compact design and outstanding efficiency while also providing overpressure protection in high-power applications.

The FHPRV is a bolt-on valve that provides high-flow pressure relief at the motor, which is critical for motor protection in demanding applications. In the event of an extended overpressure situation, the valve enables the passage of up to 600 liters per minute of flow, depending on size, preventing damage to the motor and pump. The flow rate is among the highest available for this type of valve.

The compact solution offers full-flow relief functionality without a significant increase in motor size or circuit complexity. Other solutions, such as remote-mount manifolds, require more space and can increase cost and complexity.

Commonly used in closed-circuit propel applications, axial piston motors such as Danfoss H1 motors are also ideal for high-power open-circuit systems, including drilling functions, crushing and shredding functions, heavy-duty excavator attachments, and forestry applications.

“While typical open-circuit applications can make use of low-speed high-torque motors, higher pressure applications require higher power axial piston motors,” said Kenny Befus, High-Power Portfolio Manager, Hydrostatics division, Danfoss Power Solutions. “Danfoss H1 motors feature a delta pressure rating of up to 450 bar, 480 bar absolute, making them ideal for these scenarios. And now, with our full-flow high-pressure relief valve, we can provide a better match when it comes to power and pressure.”

The FHPRV can be stacked with other valves, such as the CBV, providing additional functionality based on application needs. It can also be used in closed-circuit applications.

The FHPRV is available in four configurations to suit the range of H1B motor displacements. DN19 works with the 60-cc motor, DN25 works with the 80-cc and 110-cc motors, DN32A works with the 160-cc motor, and DN32B works with the 210-cc and 250-cc motors.

More than just energy-efficient drives.

Especially sustainable because of their energy and material efficiency.

According to the German Environment Agency, electric drives in the industry and trade sectors consume nearly two fifths of the total electricity in Germany. Particularly electric drives and the aggregates powered by them therefore have a great and economic energy saving potential. With its highly efficient latest-generation IE5+ motors, system provider Nord DriveSystems offers an optimum solution for the significant reduction of energy and resource consumptions.

The compact and highly efficient IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) from NORD are characterised by a constantly high efficiency of up to 95% over a wide torque range and thus also achieve optimum energy consumption performance in partial load and partial speed ranges.

“That means that the efficiencies of our IE5+ motors clearly exceed those of the highest defined efficiency class IE5”, says Jörg Niermann, Marketing Manager at Nord DriveSystems. This significantly reduces the application’s energy requirements and CO2e emissions. Particularly for large systems with long operating times of the electric drives – for example in intralogistics with many installed drives – this makes a considerable difference. “Our IE5+ motor technology, however, is far more than just energy efficiency”, Niermann adds. “We rather think of it as a holistic concept that goes beyond the mere consideration of efficiency.”

Material efficiency as a sustainability factor.
The compact IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motors from NORD also convince with their innovative design and require a comparatively small quantity of material. NORD designed the IE5+ motor as an 8-pole synchronous motor in an IPM design. This reduces the size of the motor’s active components, which not only results in material savings in the sheet metal package but also with the magnets.

With 8-pole synchronous motors, the stator can also be manufactured with the so-called single-tooth windings. As a result, valuable material such as copper is only used where it is actually productive; inefficient use in the winding head is reduced. “Our IE5+ synchronous motor combines energy efficiency with material efficiency and thus scores twice in terms of sustainability”, Niermann highlights. “This is also valid for our DuoDrive, which integrates the IE5+ motor with a single-stage helical gear unit into one housing.”

Revolutionary geared motor technology.

The motor and the gear unit in one single housing  is very lightweight and compact, and with very high power density.

Two become one: The fewer interfaces, the higher the system efficiency – based on this maxim, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS introduced a revolutionary geared motor in a hygienic wash-down design one year ago, where the especially energy-efficient IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motor and a single-stage helical gear unit are installed in one single housing.

The completely new, compact design with full integration of motor and gear unit in one single housing is an extraordinary leap in the development of geared motors and has now been successfully patented. The long-term durability and reliability of the innovative solution in terms of design and materials has been successfully proven in months of testing during the development of the DuoDrive, and thus real pioneering work has been accomplished in the field of geared motors. The integration has been decisively advanced to achieve an optimal utilisation of installation space. Along with the IE5+ motor on which it is based, the encoder, speed feedback and brake are all safely accommodated in the housing.

Excellent system efficiency
As a system, the very compact DuoDrive concept achieves a significantly higher energy efficiency than the already proven drive systems with IE5+ synchronous motor and bevel gear unit. At up to 92%, DuoDrive currently offers the highest system efficiency on the market in this power class, and achieves very high efficiency in the partial load range. It is thus future-proof and a real cost reducer. The constant motor torque over a wide speed range allows for consistent version reduction and reduction of operating costs. Market-compatible connection dimensions facilitate the replacement and the integration into existing plant designs.

The first available DuoDrive size covers gear unit speed ratios of i = 3.24 to i = 16.2 and is designed for output torque ranges of up to 80 Nm and speeds of up to 1,000 rpm. In addition to the high system efficiency, the smooth, unventilated and compact design, and the quiet running with minimum noise emissions are further important features of the new DuoDrive geared motor. Elimination of many wearing parts results in lower maintenance.

Effective tool change cleverly designed with inductive miniature sensors.

In modern processing centers, inductive sensors are the components of choice for monitoring the motor spindle clamping process. Integrated into the spindle, they must be exceptionally small and offer high repeatability to ensure smooth tool changing at all times. Baumer offers a high-performance portfolio of miniature sensors for the intelligent design of effective spindle solutions. This can either involve a classic design with three switching sensors or a smart design with one measurement sensor.

Tool change in fully automated processing centers, from removal until the insertion of the new tool in the spindle, takes less than a second. To achieve maximum system effectiveness, this process must function with ultimate reliability. The error-free functioning of the smallest inductive sensors plays a major role in ensuring this. For the processing center to function error-free, the machine control requires the following key information regarding the status of the collet chuck: open and no tool clasped, closed and no tool clasped, or closed and tool clasped. The answer to this challenge are inductive sensors. The task can be handled using either one measurement sensor or three switching inductive sensors.

Largest portfolio, smallest sensors
In drive and clamping solutions, the sensor technology is integrated in the motor spindle. Given this confined space, the sensors must therefore be as small as possible, yet very powerful – characteristics found in the sensors from Baumer. The Swiss sensor manufacturer offers the market’s largest portfolio of miniature and sub-miniature inductive sensors with micrometer measuring accuracy. One example is the inductive proximity sensor IFRM 03 with a diameter of only 3 mm. It is available in various lengths starting at a mere 12 mm. Yet its miniature housing contains the complete evaluation electronics that are responsible for the high-repeatability switching points as well as the precise analog measurement values. In addition, these industrial-grade sensors are robust, EMC-stable, and comply with the protection class IP 67. The sensors remain unaffected by heat, oily environments, and vibrations that normally occur in tooling machines. This is where the decades of experience of Baumer in miniature sensor technology come to play.

Measuring instead of switching
Rather than detecting the three positions of the drawbar with switching sensors, an analog inductive distance sensor offers an alternative solution. It requires a steep angle taper on the drawbar rather than a retainer. With a steep angle taper connected to the drawbar, it is possible for the measuring sensor to detect the position of the drawbar and thus recognize the state of the collet chuck. The distances or the respective clamping values that are evaluated by the control can be allocated to the three positions of the bar. The use of a measurement sensor offers a number of advantages – on the one hand, the sensor requires less space than three individual switching sensors and also less mounting effort. On the other hand, the sensor constantly monitors the state of the tool clamp. This makes it possible, for example, to detect when the tool becomes loose or is not clasped centrally. This may happen if chips fall between the spindle and the tool. It can result in damage to the tool or quality problems of the machined part. The precise sensors from Baumer optimize the repeatability of the tool clamping. This minimizes a potential lack of concentric runout of the used tool or detects it early on. A measuring sensor improves the reliability of the clamping system while ensuring both the quality of the processing as well as system availability, which is reflected in increased overall system effectiveness. This requires micrometer precision of the sensor, a detection range that is as large as possible, and a limited temperature drift. In this regard, AlphaProx, the smallest inductive distance sensors from Baumer, offer the highest performance on the market. The reliable measured values and high precision ensure users a maximum reproducibility for tool tensioning. Baumer has introduced one of the smallest distance measurement inductive sensors on the market – the inductive analog sensor IF08. This product series has a box-shaped housing measuring 16 x 8 x 4.7 mm. Nevertheless, it contains the entire evaluation electronics and a drilled hole for flexible mounting even in confined mounting spaces. Its measuring distance is 2 mm with an output signal of 0 – 10 VDC.

Flexible with IO-Link
Even greater flexibility is offered by the miniature distance measurement inductive sensor of the IR06 series with digital IO-Link interface with a housing that is only 6.5 mm thick and 46 mm long. The standardized interface allows the easy integration of the clamping process into the control. The collected data can be recorded and evaluated via a histogram. This allows the early detection of measurement deviations and facilitates required error analyses. For example, the smallest changes in the process can be detected via the vibration and addressed before the machined part is damaged. The sensor also provides additional diagnosis data, for example, the temperature of the sensor, which the tooling machine designers can use to indirectly recognize the heating up of the spindle. In addition, the sensor offers all the advantages of IO-Link, such as easy parameterization and quick commissioning of a replacement sensor, by downloading the parameters from the IO-Link master based on the parameter server function.

No restrictions with sensors from Baumer
The comprehensive portfolio of miniature inductive sensors offers users maximum flexibility for reliable solutions in the tool clamping process. The customer can choose whether the clamping process is monitored by switching sensors or a measurement sensor – without restrictions or limitations.

Refrigration motor.

The new PLSES 4500 from Leroy-Somer, is a high-speed drip-proof induction motor specifically designed for industrial refrigeration. Meeting the demand of professionals in the refrigeration sector, particularly as regards reliability and energy efficiency, the PLSES 4500 can reduce power consumption and operating cost by up to 30%.

A refrigeration installation has a strong impact on the energy bill of a company. The cold compressor, at the heart of the system, remains the most energy-consuming element, and can represent up to 80% of total consumption. OEMs or integrators seek to reduce drastically the power consumption of their machines. The other fundamental requirement in this industry is fault-free operation, as any breakdown of the cold production system would cause significant losses.

With the PLSES 4500, a new IP23 high-efficiency and high-speed induction motor controlled by a frequency inverter, Leroy-Somer provides an appropriate response to the needs of the refrigeration industry.

Based on the IMfinity® platform, the PLSES 4500 motor combines tried-and-tested induction motor technology with Leroy-Somer's recognised drive systems expertise. These motors, cornerstones of the refrigeration system, whose robust design perfectly meets or even exceeds the industrial refrigeration requirements in terms of reliability, are compliant with the latest European standards.

Dedicated to high speed, the PLSES 4500 has been designed to operate at variable speed. It was tested and qualified with Leroy-Somer Powerdrive MD2 high-power variable speed drives, guaranteeing optimum electrical and mechanical performance, obtained by using components selected to work together.

This solution using a variable speed motor drive has a positive effect on the energy bill. Offering IE3 efficiency, PLSES 4500 motors deliver their rated torque over a range from 1000 to 4500 rpm, resulting in notable power gains at the refrigeration compressor output. For its part, the frequency inverter adjusts the speed to the load fluctuations - which are typical of industrial refrigeration - by limiting electricity consumption to what is strictly needed for the application. Through improving operating conditions, the motor-drive assembly contributes considerably to reducing the energy bill generated by the refrigeration unit, as well as increasing the coefficient of performance (COP). This maximised energy efficiency can reduce power consumption up to 30%.

Furthermore, Leroy-Somer made design choices which ensure a surprise-free operation of the PLSES 4500 motor, given the constraints of industrial refrigeration:
  • - To avoid the circulation of shaft currents, a particularly common phenomenon in high-power applications, and offer thus maximum protection to the motor and the driven machine, the PLSES 4500 is fitted with insulated bearings and a grounding ring as standard for redirecting shaft currents.
  • - Laid out in such a way as to facilitate the connection of thick shielded cables, the terminal box also has a set of grounding braids that contribute to the good product immunity to high-frequency electromagnetic interference.
  • - The cooling system has been optimised to reduce losses, minimise noise levels and prevent temperature rise. The PLSES 4500 also benefits from a thermal reserve of 25 K across the entire speed range, which increases the winding lifetime.
An ideal solution for the industrial refrigeration from 100 to 480 kW, in frame sizes from 225 to 315, the PLSES 4500 motor combines performance and energy efficiency, whilst maintaining a maximum level of reliability.

Motor offers precision valve control.

The new Limited Angle Torque (LAT) Motor, BEI Kimco model LAT22-18, for motorised valve control has been released by Sensata Technologies. This low cost, direct drive motor can be integrated into a valve assembly for thermostat control as well as fuel metering, air intake shut off, fuel shut off, or air start control applications.

Measuring just 2.2” in diameter by 1.8” in length, the motor features a coil assembly that is completely encapsulated to withstand the harsh chemical environment of the application.

The coil assembly also includes threaded mounting holes for easy installation into the valve assembly. The desired size and weight requirements were achieved by attaching permanent magnets directly to the butterfly valve shaft. The keys to the motor’s design are torque capabilities greater than 50 oz-in over an excursion angle of 90 degrees, operating temperature ranges from ambient to 257°F (125°C) and compact size.

In this valve control application, LAT technology was chosen over other solutions because the motor was designed to be used as a direct drive device. Direct drive motors eliminate gear boxes or other mechanical linkages that can break and wear, offering higher reliability and less maintenance. Additionally, because LATs are single phase, they are also simple to control and install.

“LATs are robust and more reliable when compared to other mechanisms such as stepper or other gear motors, and operate smoothly with zero cogging,” said Jim McNamara, Sensata Applications Engineer. “These features make them an excellent choice for precision control. If an LAT can provide the performance level needed for the application, it’s definitely the best way to go.”

Motor drives.

The CFP2000 series is Delta’s brand new high reliability and industry-specific vector control drive for fan and pump applications. Featuring a built-in EMC filter, DC chokes, Real-Time Clock (RTC), and BACnet, the CFP2000 Series provides the best solution for the special needs of the HVAC industry. The IP55 model features highly effective protection against dust and water in harsh environments.
Delta's CFP2000 series is an AC motor drive specially designed for HVAC, fans & pumps, and water treatment applications. It is designed with an IP55 enclosure to provide effective protection from dust and other particles and to offer a good level of water protection. In addition, it includes many outstanding features and built-in functions that reduce setup and tuning time in operation, and provide higher efficiency.

Various parameter groups are also included to allow simple and straightforward system setup. If a higher safety standard is required, an optional mains switch function is also available upon selection. The CFP2000 complies to STO/SIL2. Other outstanding features include support for both induction and permanent magnet motors, a real time clock, a built-in 10k-step PLC capacity , built in BACNet & MODBUS and various optional extension cards such as MODBUS TCP , Profibus DP and EtherNet/IP.

High reliability
The CFP2000 benefits from Delta’s high range production quality systems that differentiates both for reliability and cost. With an IP55 rating, the CFP2000 series features highly effective protection against dust and water in harsh environments. Additionally, an enhanced coating protects the PCB from gases such as salt, SO2, O3 and H2S. The CFP2000 is vibration (IEC 60068-2-6) and shock (IEC / EN 60068-2-27) resistant. Operation temperature range is -10 °C to 50°C. The CFP2000 is equipped with a built-in EMC filter and a DC choke. This design replaces the need for an electrical distribution cabinet and saves space for other devices whilst providing the benefits of harmonic suppression and better power quality to the system.

Multi-pump control
Delta´s Multi-Pump Solutions adopt the CFP2000 series to manage up to four pumps simultaneously. In HVAC applications, the Sensorless Vector Control (SVC) function of the CFP2000 series automatically adjusts motor output based on changing torque conditions to improve motor performance, reduce energy consumption, and extend service life. This auto-tuning capability also eliminates vibration in mechanical systems caused by sudden starts and stops, and provides protection in variable load environments where momentary power loss or variable loads are encountered.

Fire Mode Application
This feature is designed for ventilation of buildings, tunnels, subways and more. The drive will bypass the alarm warning in fire mode. When a fire occurs, it forces the drive to continue to operate to extract smoke or supplies water , until the drive fails or runs out of emergency power.
