Industrial alternator launched.

The LSA 47.3 industrial alternator offers increased efficiency and starting kVA over its predecessor, and also benefits from the implementation of the lastest technologies developed by Nidec Leroy-Somer.

"The LSA 47.3 is an important step forward in our strategy to optimize our product range" said Wenbin Ding, low voltage range product manager "The benefits of this new product are significative, with real improvements where it matters most: efficiency, power and starting kVA. In addition, the optimized cooling system we implemented means that hot spots are reduced inside the machine. Ultimately this means a better reliability and longer lifetime, which is essential for the applications all LSA alternators are built to support.”

The LSA 47.3 delivers a rated power between 410 and 660 kVA at 50 Hz (495 to 825 kVA at 60 Hz). The 660 kVA rating (825 kVA at 60 Hz) was previously held by the LSA 49.3. Thanks to the cooling circuit optimization, the LSA 47.3 is now able to reach this power node for prime and demanding application. This is a significant benefit for generator set manufacturers as the same power is made available through a more compact machine.

The LSA 47.3 alternator features a SHUNT excitation system with a R250 regulator as standard. An AREP auxiliary winding excitation system with D350 digital regulator version is also available to improve transient performances and provide high overload capacities. A D550 digital regulator can also be used for grid connected applications. A Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) excitation system is also available as an option.

The LSA 47.3 is fully interchangeable with the LSA 47.2 (shaft height and feet configuration), and can therefore be coupled with all diesel engines on the market for this power range. It is now available for orders.

The LSA 47.3 offers the following power nodes:
410, 455, 500, 550, 600, 660 kVA at 50Hz
510, 570, 625, 690, 750, 825 kVA at 60Hz

This alternator is optimized for prime and demanding applications such as marine and cogeneration. It offers an efficiency of up to 95.7% at cos φ 0.8, which ranks it among the best in the category.

With the LSA 47.3 introduction, the LSA 47.2 will soon be retired from the market, as well as the LSA 49.3 S4 (660 kVA).

Green go-kart in education!

At the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), engineering students are taught electronics and challenged with real-life industrial equipment driven by electric motors and drives manufactured by Nidec.

SDU gives young engineering students an opportunity to be part of developing the green technology of the future in a creative study environment with modern teaching facilities and dedicated teachers.
The students have access to a genuine go-kart
The use of high-tech technologies in the form of real-life industrial equipment and advanced electronic techniques is an important part of the teaching and education of Denmark’s future electronics specialists. As part of the teaching projects, the institute and the students have access to several advanced electronic test benches, which gives them a good insight into the handling, testing and research of different combinations of industrial electronic equipment and teaches them to test torque, speed, load, etc. under realistic conditions.

The test benches combine different set-ups of advanced variable speed drives and high-tech electric motors, which have the flexibility to test a wide variety of electronic equipment. The test benches use Nidec Leroy-Somer motor units (servo motors, LSMV and IMfinity induction ranges) and Control Techniques Unidrive M600/M700 drives.

Each semester, the electronic engineering degree programme includes project work on a current topic, for example how to design the electronic controller of an electric go-kart motor. In the course of the project, the students work with the design of variable speed drives, programming, modulation and simulation of the drives as well as the design of electronic hardware. The students have access to a genuine go-kart with an electric motor as well as a corresponding test bench with programmable drives and electric motors.

All in all, the realistic project provides useful knowledge and intuitive understanding of the control of electric motors, which can also be used in connection with variable speed drives for electric cars,
robots, etc.

Refrigration motor.

The new PLSES 4500 from Leroy-Somer, is a high-speed drip-proof induction motor specifically designed for industrial refrigeration. Meeting the demand of professionals in the refrigeration sector, particularly as regards reliability and energy efficiency, the PLSES 4500 can reduce power consumption and operating cost by up to 30%.

A refrigeration installation has a strong impact on the energy bill of a company. The cold compressor, at the heart of the system, remains the most energy-consuming element, and can represent up to 80% of total consumption. OEMs or integrators seek to reduce drastically the power consumption of their machines. The other fundamental requirement in this industry is fault-free operation, as any breakdown of the cold production system would cause significant losses.

With the PLSES 4500, a new IP23 high-efficiency and high-speed induction motor controlled by a frequency inverter, Leroy-Somer provides an appropriate response to the needs of the refrigeration industry.

Based on the IMfinity® platform, the PLSES 4500 motor combines tried-and-tested induction motor technology with Leroy-Somer's recognised drive systems expertise. These motors, cornerstones of the refrigeration system, whose robust design perfectly meets or even exceeds the industrial refrigeration requirements in terms of reliability, are compliant with the latest European standards.

Dedicated to high speed, the PLSES 4500 has been designed to operate at variable speed. It was tested and qualified with Leroy-Somer Powerdrive MD2 high-power variable speed drives, guaranteeing optimum electrical and mechanical performance, obtained by using components selected to work together.

This solution using a variable speed motor drive has a positive effect on the energy bill. Offering IE3 efficiency, PLSES 4500 motors deliver their rated torque over a range from 1000 to 4500 rpm, resulting in notable power gains at the refrigeration compressor output. For its part, the frequency inverter adjusts the speed to the load fluctuations - which are typical of industrial refrigeration - by limiting electricity consumption to what is strictly needed for the application. Through improving operating conditions, the motor-drive assembly contributes considerably to reducing the energy bill generated by the refrigeration unit, as well as increasing the coefficient of performance (COP). This maximised energy efficiency can reduce power consumption up to 30%.

Furthermore, Leroy-Somer made design choices which ensure a surprise-free operation of the PLSES 4500 motor, given the constraints of industrial refrigeration:
  • - To avoid the circulation of shaft currents, a particularly common phenomenon in high-power applications, and offer thus maximum protection to the motor and the driven machine, the PLSES 4500 is fitted with insulated bearings and a grounding ring as standard for redirecting shaft currents.
  • - Laid out in such a way as to facilitate the connection of thick shielded cables, the terminal box also has a set of grounding braids that contribute to the good product immunity to high-frequency electromagnetic interference.
  • - The cooling system has been optimised to reduce losses, minimise noise levels and prevent temperature rise. The PLSES 4500 also benefits from a thermal reserve of 25 K across the entire speed range, which increases the winding lifetime.
An ideal solution for the industrial refrigeration from 100 to 480 kW, in frame sizes from 225 to 315, the PLSES 4500 motor combines performance and energy efficiency, whilst maintaining a maximum level of reliability.

Digital voltage regulator.

Leroy-Somer and Kato Engineering have introduced the D700, an automatic digital voltage regulator specially designed to meet the challenges of energy production in the digital age. It includes all necessary regulator functions, outstanding smart grid capabilities, and numerous additional functions and options that make it one of the most versatile products on the market.

Along with network synchronization management, the D700 features multiple regulation modes, including regulation based on the power factor at the point of delivery or at generator output (especially for networks operating in parallel). Profile monitoring and various Grid Code regulation specifications can thus potentially be programmed directly into the D700.

For the first time, all excitation types are supported up to 25 A in continuous operation (50 A in the event of short circuit). In addition, the D700 can control an external power module that makes it possible to offer static excitation systems up to 1500 A. A special double regulation board is also available to ensure total system redundancy.

The D700 also includes multiple patented solutions based on expertise and knowledge drawn from Nidec alternators. These functions, such as redundant power bridge, curve functions, simplified load sharing, and excitation limits can be used to improve global system security.

In addition to outstanding regulation functions, the D700 also includes many components and options that make it very flexible: a data logger, programmable logic, equalisation and synchronisation, remote regulation, communications bus, current compensation, and "black start" capability (without auxiliary power supply).

The D700 is designed to integrate easily into complex systems (including networked systems). In some cases, the D700 can even control certain application processes to avoid the need for an additional system (such as an automaton). The control software supplied with the D700 is intuitive, and easy to configure no matter what the requirements are. It also includes an integrated oscilloscope function.

"We are thrilled with the way D700 has been received", declared Jean-François Paillou, Project Manager. "It's the first time that a regulator as comprehensive as this has been offered on the market. It supports all the regulation functions, even the most advanced ones. And thanks to all these integrated functions, we are in a position to offer a solution for a very wide range of situations. We have received excellent feedback from our customers and partners and every day we find more new cases where the D700 really has a competitive edge."

The D700 was also designed to be integrated in the GenOSys system (Leroy-Somer and Kato Engineering’s recently launched remote power management system). When integrated into GenOSys, the D700 is able to carry out remote installation monitoring, including a system of alerts and the use of mathematical models for predictive maintenance.

To maximize performance, the D700 has been developed based on feedback collected from the field along with the teamwork of various entities in Europe and the US. The requirements specification of the D700 was written based on actual use cases experienced by the Leroy-Somer and Kato Engineering teams. On top of the internal specifications based on the team's own regulation expertise, customer requests received in previous years were compiled and analysed, including the most demanding and exacting requests.

The result is an extremely versatile product that offers outstanding ease-of-use in operations and during installation or troubleshooting.

Fish feed producer saves power!

A specialist in aquafeed production has replaced an ageing, damaged DC motor on its principal extruder with a Dyneo® motor from Leroy-Somer, part of the Nidec group. The investment is providing the company with significant annual savings in energy costs.

Aquaculture, more commonly known as fish farming, is a rapidly growing sector. Companies such as Aller Aqua, which produces both freshwater and saltwater fish feed, is constantly looking for ways to improve its production technology and processes to benefit from this growth. Operating from headquarters at Christiansfeld, near Kolding, (DK), Aller Aqua has been established for over 50 years and today has factories in Denmark, Poland, Germany and Egypt, exporting products to more than 60 countries worldwide.

The company has a broad product range, consisting of feed for 30 species of fish. As a result, production schedules are demanding, which is why the company sought to maximise its potential gains when the DC motor on one of the company’s main extruders at Christiansfeld had to be replaced.

“Aller Aqua had a particular interest in energy efficiency for its new motor solution as extruding feed stuff is a very energy-intensive process,” explained Carl Erik Niemann, Sales Engineer - Drives & Motors Technology at Nidec Industrial Automation Denmark A/S. “They knew this would help boost both competitiveness and sustainable development.”

After a comprehensive evaluation of the market, the company opted for a 310 kW (2400 rpm) Dyneo® permanent magnet synchronous motor. Offering an efficiency level exceeding IE4 requirements, this option will enable the saving of at least 135,000 kWh of electricity per year.

“Beyond energy performance, Aller Aqua is now able to benefit from significant savings in maintenance costs, allied to increased machine availability,” said Mr Niemann. “The previous DC motor featured a brush and collector system, which comprised wear parts.”

The implementation of the Dyneo® motor also allowed local service centre Ølgod Elektro to simplify the existing installation by eliminating the cooling/ventilation circuit required previously by the replaced IP23 DC motor.

Drives aid Dutch innovative fishing craft.

Control Techniques & Leroy-Somer have recently helped complete a landmark fishing industry project by contributing to the construction of a brand new type of marine vessel, the MDV-1 “Immanuel”.
The solution comprises a number of Unidrive M variable speed drives, along with motors, transformers, brake resistors, rectifier units and generators.

The MDV-1 “Immanuel” is a Dutch-built 30.2 x 8.6m twin-rig fishing vessel devised for the Masterplan Sustainable Fishing Foundation (shortened to ‘MDV’). The boat offers a number of key innovations over traditional craft including, notably, savings of up to 80% in both fuel consumption and emissions (CO2/NOx).

The remit of the MDV, which was established in 2012 to drive innovation in the Dutch fishing sector, is to seek efficiency improvements in every area, including the propulsion system, which on the MDV-1 “Immanuel” is diesel-electric with a variable-speed generator and DC-bus.

This design presents the opportunity to run the generator extremely efficiently, at speeds ranging from 800 to 1,200 rpm, and means the boat can be equipped with two generators (one running) instead of three in the case of AC (where normally two would be in operation). The larger generator (500kW) is used during transit and fishing, while the smaller one (117kW) is mainly an emergency generator, capable of bringing the boat back to shore at a lower speed.

The system benefits from the use of a 400kW water-cooled permanent magnet motor (120 rpm) for the main propeller in place of a conventional diesel engine. Along with higher efficiency, further benefits include its small size, with no need for an in-line gearbox with transmission.

Moreover, the fact that impact loads can be absorbed electrically by the engine controller makes the generator more stable and energy-efficient, with less engine noise, less vibration and virtually no need for maintenance.

Four Control Techniques Unidrive M variable speed drives work in tandem with the propulsion engine, with another such unit deployed for the drive of the rotary transformer, along with others for the hydraulic pump, flushing pump, engine room ventilation, fish hold cooling system, and two for the pulse fishing windlasses. The windlasses have to pay an electric cable in and out with a stable tensile force (without breaking), but with a variable swell.

Further products supplied include a Leroy-Somer motor/generator transformer for the on-board electrical system, a brake resistor for the power generation system, rectifier units for the common DC bus, a 12-pulse transformer suitable for variable frequencies, and Leroy-Somer main and auxiliary generators.

Besides the drive components, Control Techniques & Leroy-Somer also took care of the engineering, documentation, testing, set-up, training and drives operating software – not just for control from the PLC, but the application software for managing the frequency controllers of the propulsion engine and rotary transformer.

In order to reduce harmonic current distortion, engineers also advised the use of an electrical system in which a 12-pulse isolating transformer was employed. Switching controllers and generators guarantees a broad-based redundant system without any on-board electrical system interference compromising the instrumentation.

Construction ran to plan and the MDV1 was launched on time. Furthermore, after eight months of fishing the figures look good – the vessel is designed for the efficient fishing of both plaice and sole with a capacity to carry 850 boxes. Importantly, the systems that control and monitor energy consumption are doing their job so well that the MDV 1 can make money even when the price of oil is high.

Motors deliver efficiency & cost savings!

One of the world’s leading compressor manufacturers, Mattei, is now incorporating Emerson Industrial Automation Leroy Somer IE3 electrical motors in all of its compressors rated between 18 and 110 kW. The move was driven by the introduction of phase two of the EU´s IE3 efficiency level legislation for electric motors in Europe.

Mattei specialises in rotary vane compressors, rather than conventional screw type models. Vane compressors are optimised for intense use, typically 24 hours a day, hence the requirement for a robust motor that delivers better and higher performances, as well as reduced energy consumption.

Having worked with Emerson for around 30 years, Mattei knew the company offered extensive knowledge of international legislation, as well as high quality and reliable efficiency solutions.

The new deal sees Emerson supplying around 600 motors per year, which will ensure Mattei’s compressors conform to the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS).

The first phase of the MEPS scheme (efficiency level IE2) was implemented in June 2011, and has now been followed by efficiency level IE3. Specifically, single-speed, three-phase induction motors with a rated output from 7.5 to 375 kW must now meet the IE3 efficiency level. The good news for end users is that more efficient motors offer the potential for significant savings in running costs.

To meet the new IE3 efficiency legislation, Emerson has redesigned its motors to offer a greater reduction in losses than IE2 variants. The benefit for end users is a considerable reduction in running costs over the lifecycle of the IE3 efficiency motor, along with lower carbon emissions.

When choosing a supplier for its range of air compressors, Mattei says that although it takes into
consideration the quality and price of the motors offered, it also assesses the market’s perception of the brand. If it’s a well-established brand then the company is reassured about the quality of the components being sold. Furthermore, Mattei says that another significant advantage of using Emerson is that its motors can be customised to better meet assembly requirements.

• Mattei produces around 6500 compressors every year, ranging from very small (1.5 to 18 kW) to very large (110 to 250 kW). Emerson supplies Mattei with IE3 motors for the mid-range between 37 and 110 kW, which equates around 40/50 per month.
Beyond Italy, Mattei has a direct presence in France, Germany, Spain, the UK, Russia, China and the USA, while it operates in other countries through resellers and distributors, making it a truly global enterprise.
