Predictive maintenance for rotary equipment.

A new asset monitoring solution that enables predictive maintenance for rotary assets and delivers actionable insights to plant managers has been launched by Sensata Technologies.

Unplanned downtime related to motors, pumps, and other rotating assets costs plants millions of dollars in production every year. But existing solutions do not provide the real-time insights plant managers need to truly monitor their assets.

The new wireless 6VW series IoT sensor delivers insights via the Sensata IQ platform and can simultaneously monitor each asset using six sensing modalities - vibration, temperature, acoustic emission, speed, humidity, and magnetic flux. The sensors are designed for easy retrofit into a wide range of existing rotary assets - such as motors, pumps, blowers, fans, or compressors - regardless of brand or manufacturer with no changes needed to the company’s hardware or control platforms. The 6VW sensor series is an easy-to-use, self-install solution with a mobile app for device configuration, making setup and installation possible in less than five minutes.

Using powerful AI-driven algorithms explicitly designed for rotary assets by Nanoprecise, a Sensata technology partner, data from the sensor is analyzed at the edge for anomalies and then pushed to the Sensata IQ cloud-based platform for further analysis and data visualization.

The Sensata IQ platform uses the data to identify potential faults, calculate the asset’s projected remaining useful life and deliver alerts to plant managers on their laptops, tablets, or smartphones. The deep predictive maintenance analysis capabilities help plant managers rely less on manual walkarounds and better understand the health of their assets.

“The partnership with Sensata Technologies has been a tremendous success for both parties,” says Sunil Vedula, Founder and CEO of Nanoprecise. “Together, we know that our AI-powered solutions will help change the way plant managers around the globe monitor their rotary assets.”

Sensata is collaborating with technology companies such as Nanoprecise to develop comprehensive solutions for assets that are rarely monitored due to cost and complexity. Adding Nanoprecise’s technology to the Sensata IQ platform enables maintenance teams to make confident decisions and simplify maintenance programs across rotary assets with data that can be trusted and accessed anywhere, anytime.

“Sensata IQ is raising the bar in monitoring industrial assets, with reliable solutions that enable operators to easily increase productivity. This intuitive predictive maintenance solution, powered by Nanoprecise, allows plant operators to gain deep machine health insights on rotary assets in a simple way. Our mission is to make asset monitoring more accessible and this solution supports that mission.” says Naoto Mizuta, Vice President of Industrial at Sensata Technologies.

Monitoring asset health.

A new IQ platform that makes it easy to deploy asset health monitoring to prevent unplanned downtime within manufacturing environments has been announced by Sensata Technologies.

Online asset monitoring systems have traditionally been expensive, complex, and required users to have deep domain expertise. As a result, many plants and factories end up monitoring only the most critical assets, leaving up to 85% of their plant floor unprotected and unmonitored.

Backed by decades of sensor experience, Sensata IQ delivers a cost effective, easy-to-install solution that enables factory managers and maintenance engineers to intuitively monitor all their assets from anywhere, including on a smartphone, PC, or tablet. The cloud-based platform uses artificial intelligence to process data from a broad portfolio of Sensata IoT devices and qualified third-party sensors to gain insights into the health of each asset.

With Sensata IQ, plant managers get reliable and easy-to understand alerts regarding their facility’s equipment health before assets fail, thereby reducing unplanned downtime and optimizing maintenance strategies to minimize labor and parts expenses.

“By leveraging Sensata’s deep sensor domain expertise along with AI technology, the Sensata IQ platform can reliably and accurately identify machine anomalies, characterize faults, and extend the working life of assets,” said Naoto Mizuta, Vice President of Industrial at Sensata Technologies. “We are working closely with customers and partners to develop scalable solutions that make it easier and more affordable to implement remote monitoring and predictive maintenance strategies beyond the critical assets in a plant.”

Monitoring tyre tread depth.

A new collaboration with between Sensata Technologies with NIRA Dynamics AB delivers an accurate and robust tyre Tread Depth Monitoring (TDM) ‘virtual sensor’ system for automotive OEMs that optimizes tyre health and improves vehicle safety, efficiency and uptime. The TDM solution, powered by NIRA Dynamics’ tread wear estimation software, is designed to give vehicle OEMs, drivers and fleets timely alerts when tyres have worn to unsafe levels and need servicing.

“We’re excited to collaborate with NIRA Dynamics on new technology for the automotive industry." said Eric Sorret, VP Automotive at Sensata. "Sensata has developed tire technologies for more than 20 years, and we believe that this new virtual sensor builds on this experience and takes it to the next level. Using and analyzing data already being captured by other sensors, this solution provides accurate and useful information to our customers.”

Combining Sensata Technologies’ expertise in automotive sensors with NIRA Dynamics’ proficiency in developing embedded software and cloud services, the TDM solution adds new safety and maintenance capabilities to Sensata’s existing market-leading tyre safety products.

The virtual sensor system is a new, innovative technology that gathers and combines data from multiple existing sensors on a vehicle, including Sensata’s tyre pressure sensors, to provide accurate information about tyre wear and tear.

This software-based system uses a complex algorithm that monitors the tyre tread’s decreasing depth, while compensating for a wide range of real-world environmental challenges. The system tracks tyres through changes and rotations and provides a more comprehensive solution than just measuring the distance travelled.

The virtual TDM can be integrated into existing Electronic Control Units (ECU) and is designed to work with many combinations of tyre and vehicle designs. Vehicle manufacturers can quickly introduce and implement the solution across vehicle platforms without the need for custom software development.

Lisa Åbom, CEO at NIRA Dynamics said, “The cooperation between NIRA and Sensata is a perfect match. By combining our decades of experience in vehicle data cloud services with Sensata’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System, infrastructure, and extensive customer base, we can offer vehicle manufacturers additional insights and information for customers without the need to fit additional hardware on the vehicle. This solution will improve safety, creating more driver awareness about the quality of their tires to decrease the number of tire-related accidents.”

Motor offers precision valve control.

The new Limited Angle Torque (LAT) Motor, BEI Kimco model LAT22-18, for motorised valve control has been released by Sensata Technologies. This low cost, direct drive motor can be integrated into a valve assembly for thermostat control as well as fuel metering, air intake shut off, fuel shut off, or air start control applications.

Measuring just 2.2” in diameter by 1.8” in length, the motor features a coil assembly that is completely encapsulated to withstand the harsh chemical environment of the application.

The coil assembly also includes threaded mounting holes for easy installation into the valve assembly. The desired size and weight requirements were achieved by attaching permanent magnets directly to the butterfly valve shaft. The keys to the motor’s design are torque capabilities greater than 50 oz-in over an excursion angle of 90 degrees, operating temperature ranges from ambient to 257°F (125°C) and compact size.

In this valve control application, LAT technology was chosen over other solutions because the motor was designed to be used as a direct drive device. Direct drive motors eliminate gear boxes or other mechanical linkages that can break and wear, offering higher reliability and less maintenance. Additionally, because LATs are single phase, they are also simple to control and install.

“LATs are robust and more reliable when compared to other mechanisms such as stepper or other gear motors, and operate smoothly with zero cogging,” said Jim McNamara, Sensata Applications Engineer. “These features make them an excellent choice for precision control. If an LAT can provide the performance level needed for the application, it’s definitely the best way to go.”
