(AMP) as all-in-one linear positioning solutions including drive electronics and controls, housing and bearing support. Available from Mclennan, their European distribution partner, the new StepSERVO Smart Actuators are variously available with NEMA 11, 14, 17 or 23 frame motors configured with built-in ball or lead screw mechanics.

Smart Actuators -
MLA/MCB moving carriage (left),
MLT pushrod (bottom right) and
Screw Motors (top right)
The MLA and MCB series are moving carriage designs whilst the MLT series is a pushrod-style actuator. AMP’s well proven StepSERVO™ technology combines a digital closed-loop servo drive, encoder feedback and several options for motion control and communications in a single integrated package that delivers more torque, acceleration, speed, accuracy, and efficiency over conventional open-loop stepper motor systems.

These new compact and space saving actuators are based around AMP’s wide range of Screw Motors - hybrid stepper motors where the standard motor shaft is replaced with a lead screw assembly. MLA- and MCB-Smart series linear actuators feature an extruded aluminium rail and support system with a moving load carrying carriage. These versions are available in NEMA frame motor sizes 11, 14 and 23. Users can choose various ball/lead screw pitches and nut material options with leads from 1 to 10 mm to suit their positioning resolution and speed requirements – speeds up to 100 mm/sec are available. The largest actuator, with its 23-frame motor, has a maximum stroke of 250 mm and a maximum load capacity of 7 kg horizontal and 4.4 kg vertical. The direct integration of the screw into the motor allows a coupling-free design that saves space for a more compact solution. The MCB version includes a dust seal and fully shrouded motor whilst the lower cost MLA offers is an open-frame housing design for use in clean environments. Both version include mounting fixtures.

The MLT series pushrod style actuator is also based around the AMP’s Screw Motors in NEMA 11 or 17 frame sizes. Well suited for miniature push, pull, lift, and press applications, a choice of lead screw or ball screw mechanics provides users with a wide scope of cost vs. performance options. The largest MLT actuator can deliver a thrust force up to 300 N and speeds to 250 mm/sec with low vibration and low noise operation. Capacitive encoders as alternative for stepper motor stall detection.

Applied Motion Products Inc. (AMP) has recently announced an alternative encoder technology for microstepping motor position verification. Available from Mclennan, AMP’s European distribution partner, capacitive encoder technology offers advantages for applications where increased durability or space savings are required.

Whilst stepper motor based motion control systems are inherently open loop, more and more applications require the added security and peace of mind provided by encoder position feedback where lost motion might be problematical. Mclennan addresses this need through a wide range of microstepping drives and compatible motor systems from AMP that provide position verification and/or eradicate stall problems for improved performance. Up until now optical encoders have been available as the feedback components of choice but AMP has recently announced this new range of competitively priced capacitive encoders for use on its NEMA 17, 23, and 24 frame stepper motors.

The analogue characteristics of the capacitive-reactance technology used in these new encoders is converted into digital pulses for speed and position feedback and as such offer the same electrical output as their optical counterparts, so that no difference is required for matched microstepping drives. With 2000 pulses per rev available as standard and with a nominal 5V signal level and A+B & Z channels, the encoder is easily integrated across all of the AMP intelligent microstepping drives that offer stall detection or position verification.

In applications where dust, oil, and other contaminants may be present optical encoders can be susceptible to signal level degradation or signal loss whereas capacitive sensors are generally more robust and unaffected in these environments. AMP’s capacitive sensors are pre-assembled onto rear shaft of the motor and with a thinner profile than the optical encoder equivalents a small amount of axial length saving can be achieved in very space restricted installations.
