Servo motors with smart feedback device.

New high-resolution encoder offers multi-turn absolute feedback at zero incremental cost.

The new SFD-M (Smart Feedback Device, Multi-Turn) has been introduced by Kollmorgen. It allows machine builders to achieve high-resolution multi-turn feedback with absolute positioning information available at system startup.

Designed to work with AKDTM and AKD2G drives, the SFD-M absolute multi-turn encoder can be integrated into Kollmorgen housed servo motors at no additional charge compared to the SFD-3 single-turn absolute encoder, providing multi-turn performance, four times greater positioning accuracy and fifty times lower EMF noise.

Comparable third-party encoders come with a premium price. With the SFD-M, customers can achieve substantial savings in machine designs that perform at the highest levels of precision, efficiency and effectiveness.

Absolute multi-turn positioning for precise, productive motion The SFD-M measures the position of the rotor shaft throughout each 360º rotation without requiring reference to a home position, and it registers the total number of rotations the shaft has made in either direction.

This absolute multi-turn positioning capability is ideal when precise tracking of position is required over large rotational distances, such as in machine tool positioning, packaging machines, material handling, satellite tracking and many other applications.

Additionally, the SFD-M maintains absolute positioning information in real time even when the system is powered down, eliminating the need for time-consuming homing sequences upon startup.

Energy-harvesting technology for battery-free operation.
Absolute multi-turn encoders from other providers often require a battery to retain positioning information when the system is powered down or during a power failure. These external batteries require replacement and can be subject to failure. Other alternatives use mechanical gear trains, which are noisy, backlash-prone and add size to the motor.

The new Kollmorgen SFD-M eliminates these issues, instead using energy-harvesting technology to reliably maintain positioning information with no need for batteries or gear trains. Battery-free operation eliminates maintenance issues while also supporting efforts to reduce the consumption of natural resources and minimize waste.

The SFD-M is highly accurate, offering these key specifications:

● Resolution

- 24 bits per revolution

- 16,777,216 counts per revolution

- 0.0772 arc-sec per count

● Multi-turn absolute range

- 16 bits = 65,536 motor revolutions

● Accuracy

- < +/– 1 arc-min typical at 25ºC

- < +/– 3 arc-min worst case

“Our new SFD-M encoder provides multi-turn absolute functionality with exceptional position accuracy and resolution at zero additional cost over Kollmorgen motors with single-turn encoders,” said Chris Cooper, Kollmorgen’s Senior Director of Global Product Management. “That’s a huge benefit for precision and productivity at a savings of hundreds of dollars per motor and potentially several thousand dollars in a complex, multi-axis machine. Single motor-to-drive cable technology with auto drive setup further lowers total costs. We are very proud to offer all of these benefits to our customers as an integral part of Kollmorgen’s industry-leading servo systems.”

Explosion proof servo-motor.

Kollmorgen have announced the ATEX certification and IECEx/cETLus listing for the explosion proof Goldline EBH 480 Vac servo motor. These new explosion proof approvals for the high-voltage Goldline EBH servo motor exemplify Kollmorgen’s commitment to advancing the state of the art in motion control and meeting the most demanding application requirements.

The high-voltage Goldline EBH servo motor joins a broad selection of Kollmorgen explosion proof motors certified and listed according to UL, ATEX, IECEx and/or CSA standards. Explosion proof motors are required in hazardous locations where flammable gases, mists or vapors may exist in explosive or ignitable concentrations. Such environments are often found in mines, oil & gas refineries, textile mills and industrial paint booths.

For high-voltage applications in hazardous locations, Goldline EBH servo motors offer speeds up to 7,500 rpm with exceptionally high torque density for maximum performance in a minimal installation footprint. Rugged resolver feedback and a built-in thermostat support reliable operation under harsh environmental conditions.

Goldline EBH servo motors in frame sizes 1 – 6 join other explosion proof motors in the Goldline EB family that meet ATEX/IECEx standards, and more specifically CE 0081 Ex II 2 G Ex d IIB T3 Gb –40ºC ≤ Ta ≤ 40ºC. This classification indicates that the motors are suitable for use in any above-ground industry where easily ignited gases such as ethylene are likely to be present in the atmosphere for 10 to 1,000 hours/year during normal operation (Zones 1 and 2). Kollmorgen applies a flameproof method of protection to the motor so that any internal ignition is contained within the motor housing without the possibility of escape into the external atmosphere. The maximum surface temperature of the motor under fault conditions is 200°C.

Servo motor that delivers durability, cleanability and versatility.

The AKMA servo motor built specifically for durability, cleanability, and versatility has been announced by Kollmorgen. The motor employs a hardened anodized aluminum surface to offer machine designers a cost-effective hygienic option to stainless steel in medium- to heavy-washdown applications.

“We are excited to offer the AKMA servo motors to engineers searching for an affordable motor choice in wash-down environments where stainless steel surfaces are not necessarily required,”
said Ross McMillan, Vice President of Engineering at Kollmorgen. “Now, it’s possible to balance performance with value and avoid overspending for a surface quality you may not need.”

The lightweight design of the AKMA motor makes it easy to install and maintain, and its high torque density offers machine builders more performance in a smaller footprint. The motor is ideally suited for precision motion applications in food & beverage processing, and in pharmaceutical & medical packaging operations. The AKMA’s IP69k rating enables it to deliver high performance even in wet and rugged environments, supporting critical applications like tracking and positioning for antenna pedestal systems.

An anodized aluminum surface offers strong resistance to chemicals across a wide pH range. Since the motor’s smoother and hardened surface is more scratch resistant and will not flake like a painted motor, it can be used above the food line. The AKMA’s stainless steel shaft meets functional safety requirements, while its “one-piece” rounded housing structure eliminates the need for a seal between the flange and housing to prevent puddling and water ingress. The AKMA motor also features a vented design to equalize pressure inside and outside for increased OEE and motor durability.

Linear servo-motors.

A series of brushless linear servo motors has been launched by NUM, are designed specifically for continuous duty cycle applications in machine tools.

Until now, most linear motors on the market have been designed for general-purpose automation involving fast A-B positioning capabilities but relatively low duty cycles. NUM has taken a more conservative design approach, waiting until the market matured before creating a linear motor expressly intended for continuous operation in the harsh environment of modern machine tools.

NUM’s new LMX series linear motors incorporate a number of features to help mitigate the effect of arduous operating conditions. Their moving coil primary section is fully encapsulated in a robust stainless steel housing, with an integrated cooling circuit designed to maximise the flow rate, which also allows the use of low specific heat capacity cooling liquids. The motors have a short pole pitch to increase force density, minimise cogging forces and reduce thermal losses.

LMX linear motors comprise a metal track with multiple embedded rare earth magnets, and a coil assembly supported by a customer-supplied guideway. A key feature of the motors is that they are designed to operate with a comparatively large air gap of 1 mm, to reduce the impact of mounting tolerances on performance characteristics. For most machine tool applications, the track is held stationary and the coil assembly is free to move – but converse mounting arrangements are also practicable, with similar performance attributes.

Suitable for use with standard 3-phase sinusoidal brushless servo drives, NUM’s LMX series linear motors are especially cost-effective when teamed with the company’s NUMDrive X or new NUM DrivePro drives. Both these families of high performance drives feature a high degree of functional integration, making them some of the smallest on the market, and offer extensive safe motion monitoring and control options to help simplify design-in.

The new NUM DrivePro drives are likely to be of particular interest to OEMs seeking maximum performance from NUM’s new LMX series linear motors. Implemented using advanced system-on-chip (SoC) technology and based on a multi-core ARM processor, the drives employ bare metal programming to eliminate operating system latency.

NUM produces a wide range of electric motors, including spindle, servo, torque, synchronous and asynchronous, and now linear. According to Massimiliano Menegotto, Managing Director and CTO of NUM Group, “Choosing the best kinematic solution for any machine often involves a tradeoff between various technical factors. NUM can support machine designers, during the machine's development phase, with the selection of the most appropriate solution."

Hollow shaft rotary actuators.

The new HLMT series hollow shaft rotary actuators from JVL A/S take a novel approach to decentralised precision positioning tasks on rotary tables and automated machines where a through aperture is required for routing services or maintaining a clear line of site. Available in the Britain from Mclennan the design features an offset motor mounting in five model variants with clear through-hole diameters from 20 to 30 mm and rated torque output of 5 to 142 Nm. The actuators are used with JVL’s MAC motor® and ServoStep® integrated servo and stepper motors or with other manufacturers motors in NEMA 17, 23 and 34 frame sizes.

The HLMT includes a comprehensive choice of options making installation straightforward and cost-effective. These include built-in absolute encoders for positioning accuracy to +/- 10 arc-sec and lost motion to 2 arc-min. Built-in home (datum) sensors are also available and standard or crossed-roller bearings options suit standard or heavy duty axial and radial rigidity requirements (axial load to 800 N on the largest model). Gear ratios available are 5, 10 or 18:1 with higher ratios on request.

With its inherent high torque, axial load capability, low run-out and platform parallelism the HLMT series is particularly suited to rotary table applications but will also suit machine set-ups where slip rings, electrical wiring, rotary fluidpower joints or laser line-of-sight needs to be routed for moving to stationary platforms. The durable geared actuator meets the IP65 protection class, as does many of the JVL integrated motors.

The product depth and flexibility of JVL’s range of integrated servo and stepper motor allows almost any choice of machine control interfacing with the added benefit of decentralised control for reduced installation and wiring. With no need for control cabinets, decentralised control can yield tangible cost and time savings. Control options cover individual or multi-axis stand-alone motion control with step and direction or analogue +/- 10 VDC inputs. JVL’s own ‘point & click’ graphical programming is also available across all its integrated motors. For MAC® series integrated servomotors, the control options extend to a wide choice of Industrial Ethernet or other common protocols including CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT. POWERLINK and more. Wireless Bluetooth, WLAN and Zigbee systems are also available. The HLMT series may be purchased for use with third-party stepper and servomotors of choice, allowing the option to build through-hole rotary actuators with the customer’s preferred motor/motion controls supplier.

Digital Single Cable Solution for servo motors.

When Hengstler first introduced the Single Cable Solution at SPS IPC Drives 2015 in Nuremberg, they claimed to have set a new standards for efficiency, safety and performance. By offering a true Single Cable Solution with high performance, Hengstler meets the latest requirements of today’s motor feedback systems.

An examination of what are the respective requirements of machinery manufacturers, machine users and end customers, reveals a clear trend. The focus is on maximum machine reliability, availability and also cost reduction at the same while securing investment to some degree by the use of future-oriented technologies. Machine and system manufacturers increasingly strive for cost and space reductions and implementation simplicity, with no compromises on performance. With its Single Cable Solution, Hengstler has provided a fitting response to the needs of the market.

From the machine manufacturer's point of view, maximum machine reliability and availability is absolutely mandatory and a real competitive advantage. Safety has to be first when considering the aspects of man/machine interaction, but not at the price of having to stop the machine. The single cable solution with its ACURO®link interface is designed to ensure a high level of functional safety in servo motor control systems. The data protocol of the electrical interface meets the requirements of SIL3 according to IEC 61508 and Cat. 3 PLe EN_IOS 13849, while the ACURO®AD37 encoder itself, and the IP core in the control, can meet all requirements from non-SIL to SIL3 depending on the application scenario. Because of the safety function that can be implemented in the drive, the machine can keep running thanks to the single cable solution, even if someone is directly in the potentially hazardous zone. A mandatory prerequisite to enable maximum machine reliability and availability.

Safety however is only one part of the equation of safety, efficiency and performance. An operating temperature of up to +115°C, an operating speed of up to 12,000 rpm and a low mounting depth of 28mm make the AD37 the most compact absolute multi-turn encoder in its class. In the SIL3 configuration, the high performance encoder known as AD37E sets new standards. Its extra efficiency and performance give a decisive competitive advantage to the drive system. The AD37 series make this possible with its high accuracy and resolution. An "electronic datasheet" in the encoder stores specific encoder data, which can be read out at any time. In the encoder itself, the motor and drive data are stored in an internal OEM memory. This is primarily of interest for end users, but also for machine manufacturers. Using this data, solutions for preventive maintenance, minimum down-time and significantly increased productivity can be implemented. The electronic product identification provides motor characteristics, its product code and serial number which make it possible to adjust automatically to each motor’s parameters. Diagnostic and monitoring functions provide important information on the operating status of the machine. This is a significant contribution to implementing Industry 4.0 scenarios and translates into security of investment for the customers who buy the machines, because the Single Sable Solution fulfils all the requirements for supporting future technologies in the best way.

Particularly in today's market, motor manufacturers are focussing on designing motors that are smaller than ever before and with higher performance. Energy, space and resource savings are given the highest priority. By enabling motor output and motor feedback signals to pass through a single cable, efficiency is significantly increased. Especially in large systems, the gain in space becomes notable and considerable weight is saved in the motors. There are other important advantages that are gained from faster installation and lower cost of material for system cabling.

With the Single Cable Solution, Hengstler offers a well-balanced overall concept and a product portfolio that continues to be expanded now and in the future. Customers are convinced that the digital approach with a true Single Cable Solution is the right choice. The advantages in terms of investment security, cost and performance are evident.

Basic servo drive system extended.

Siemens has extended its basic servo drive system, consisting of the Sinamics V90 converter and the Simotics S-1FL6 servo motor, to serve a much wider field of application.

The basic servo drive system is now available with 200-volt converters and motors with lower shaft heights and lower moments of inertia ("Low Inertia"/LI) – in addition to the familiar 400-volt versions with a higher moment of inertia ("High Inertia"/HI) of the servo motors. The 200-volt converters are up to 25 percent smaller than the 400-volt versions and therefore save additional space in the control cabinet. With a total of eight converter sizes and seven motor shaft heights with a power range from 0.05 to 7.0 kilowatts, the system is suitable for service in single- and three-phase networks. The different motor shaft heights and flange dimensions address the demands of the Asian market. Thanks to the lower moments of inertia of the motors, a wide range of motion control tasks can be realized in a cost-efficient manner. Here the focus is on dynamic motion and processing – for example positioning, transporting and winding in a wide range of applications.

Numerous integrated functions such as pulse train input positioning (PTI), USS/Modbus connection, internal positioning (IPos) as well as speed and torque control enable users to reduce their machine costs. A braking resistor has been integrated as standard to improve dynamic performance. Furthermore, the servo converter also features a rapid pulse train input of up to 1 megahertz (MHz) and supports absolute encoders with a 20-bit resolution. These functions give the system a high level of fast positioning accuracy and a low level of speed ripple. The improved servo performance is made possible by a number of features including the three-fold overload capacity of the Simotics S-1FL6 servo motor and the optimally coordinated combination of motor and converter as Integrated Drive Systems (IDS). Using IDS-based drive technology, Siemens boosts productivity, energy-efficiency and reliability in all automation environments and throughout the entire lifecycle.

Sinamics V90 is also characterized by its outstanding ease of use. For example, the Sinamics V-Assistant software tool, which is available as a free download, supports commissioning, engineering and diagnosis of the converter. Intuitive menu navigation gives a clear overview of the commissioning procedure. Thanks to coated electronic modules in the Sinamics V90 and a protection rating of IP65 for the Simotics S-1FL6, the drive system is extremely rugged – even in difficult ambient conditions. The integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) safety function prevents the motor from rotating unexpectedly, thereby improving safety for both machine and operator.

On-site hygienic servo solution!

Kollmorgen develops servo solutions for greater design freedom!

Kollmorgen has developed a scalable solution for motor tasks in the packaging, food processing and pharmaceutical industries with AKMH stainless steel motors . The motors promote an open machine design thanks to their innovative construction. Therefore, because a covering is not required, cleaning is much faster. Also, no bacteria pockets can build up on the motor itself which then reduces the risk of product contamination and possible recalls.
Saves space and time: Decentralized AKD-N servo drives and AKMH
stainless steel servomotors with single connection technology.
The AKMH range is constructed within the IP69K protection class for standard cleaning and also cleaning performed with steam jets. The use of stainless steel 1,4404 makes the servomotor corrosion-resistant − even against aggressive cleaning agents. The compact unit in sizes two to six are therefore used specifically in machines with direct product contact and aseptic processes. The AKMH stainless steel motor effectively guides the heat loss away and thus lowers the derating. Consequently the range, which is FDA-certified and has been developed in accordance with EHEDG guidelines, delivers higher continuous torque with smaller volumes. The clean power packages are connected consistently via a single cable including feedback with the SFD3 digital resolver or DSL Hiperface. One instead of two: By halving the installation complexity, cleaning is much easier and the risk of leakages is reduced.

The role of corresponding servo drives for use in hygienically demanding food and packaging industries is diminishing, and Kollmorgen supports this trend with its decentralised servo amplifiers from the AKD-N range. When placed in the direct vicinity of motors, the robust IP67 device reduce the control cabinet volume and wiring effort by more than 80%, depending on the application. Another effect: Because less heat is lost in the control cabinet, less air conditioning is required. The improved thermal properties of solutions that are spaced apart side by side prevent further derating and consequently, in comparison with solutions which are directly combined with each other, deliver 100% power. Because the AKD-N can be combined with any servomotoror rotary or linear direct drives, in comparison with integrated solutions, the design possibilities are endless.

Feedback: everything you need in just eight wires!

Kollmorgen has been able to halve the number of connecting wires required for its digital resolvers from four to two with the newly-developed SDF3. The company uses the feedback system developed in-house as part of its single-cable technology between the servo drive and the servomotor that was launched on the market in 2003.

Kollmorgen Servomotor AKM1-AKD
Only two wires are needed to supply the digital resolver with power, to communicate, and to simultaneously transfer the motor ID and the temperature data. As a result, Kollmorgen can implement single-cable technology with an eight-pole standard motor cable - three phases, one PE, two for the brakes, and two for the feedback system. Due to the high interference resistance, data can be transferred safely within a cable without EMC problems.

Moreover, the further development of the robust and inexpensive feedback system - reduces the variety in connection technology. Note that resolvers are used in more than half of all servo applications. The background is both motors with digital resolver SFD3 (http://www.kollmorgen.com/en-gb/products/one-cable-packages/motion-packages/) and drives with Multiturn or Hiperface DSL encoder can be connected with one single cable type. This means that existing feedback systems in machines can be easily replaced later, without having to completely reinstall all of the cabling. In addition, there is no risk of confusion, because only one cable type is consistently used.

Hygienic motor-gear combination.

Kollmorgen has intruduced a new version of its AKM™ "Washdown Food Grade" servomotor. Combined with a high performance AKM™ gearmotor and efficiency-optimised angular gearbox, "Washdown Food Grade" servomotors deliver a standardised motor-gear solution in a single, compact package. This advanced level of integration allows for successful implementation in most transport and turning applications in the food and beverage industries as well in downstream packaging.

Powerful, ready to install, washable
Eye catching shape and colour. The
new AKM gear motors in the special
"Washdown + Food" design dispense
 with corners and edges
.
These are the three main advantages of the ready-to-install motor-gear unit in the Hygienic Design. You can achieve significantly reduced cleaning times as a consequence of smoother and water-repellent surfaces, lower energy costs thanks to the highly efficient motor-drive combination, and simplified machine design possibilities due to space-saving assembly without additional stainless steel housing.

Shape and color are striking due mainly to the rounded design of the gear motor with its smooth, white surfaces. It prevents the build-up of bacteria and facilitates simple cleaning from the very beginning. The FDA-compliant material of the coating supports the drainage of liquids as a result of its hydrophobic properties such that no residues can form on the surface - which is helpfully supported by the fact that corners and edges are dispensed with. So that the gear motors can be installed quickly, Kollmorgen offers a two plug connection version with Resolver or Multiturn EnDat encoder, and the innovative single-cable connection technology.

The digital resolver SFD3 or a Multiturn Hiperface DSL encoder is used as a feedback system. Fewer cables mean reduced cost and effort involved in both installation and cleaning maintenance.

Selecting servomoters!

Servomotor Sizing and Application, a new book from the pen of Gary Kirkhof, brings together all the resources needed to analyse mechanisms for the purpose of selecting an appropriate servomotor. It is written for mechanical engineers engaged in the design of industrial machinery and is well suited to the control engineer because it illustrates practical servomotor applications. The book breaks the motor sizing process into its elementary topics and covers each in depth. It then brings it all back together with detailed examples.

Topics include kinematics, duty cycles, inertia, friction, and mechanics. The analysis of linkages is also discussed using the crank-arm and a two axis parallel robot as examples.

The Author
Gary Kirckof, P.E. has spent the bulk of his thirty-year career working with automated equipment and assembly lines. Servomotor Sizing and Application is a direct result of that experience. He is both a registered mechanical and electrical engineer and works for Beckhoff Automation as an application engineer.

His career started by writing and debugging the programs that ran the equipment. He would talk to the mechanical engineers who designed the equipment to find out how it was supposed to work, the sensors
they had specified, and so forth. He would then write the code for the control system and then bring the machines to life. It became quite clear to him that after power was first applied to the machines, every mistake, omission, and problem that occurred during the concept, design, and assembly process became his problem. There were many problems because the equipment was large custom machines and assembly lines. He had no desire to deal with these problems and had every desire to make his life easier, so to eliminate as many potential problems as he could, he became involved with every step of the process.

One of the problems he often encountered early in his career was undersized servomotors. Servomotors were relatively new to industrial machinery and not many people were familiar enough with them to properly select them. He was discouraged at the lack of available information so he started to compile every piece of information he could find. This book is the result of his research efforts and his experience working with servomotors, and he wishes for it to fill the still-existing information void and to be a useful resource.

Brushless DC servo motors now available with integrated EtherCAT interface

EtherCAT is an Ethernet-based field bus system that meets stringent real-time requirements and currently shows the highest rate of growth in terms of installed nodes in Ethernet-based field buses for industrial automation applications.

Dunkermotoren servo motors in the BG family are powerful, intelligent drives covering an output power range of 40 to 500 watts. These compact drives have been available for many years with a CANopen field bus interface, and more recently with an interface for Profibus DP (V1), which has become established in the market. Now Dunkermotoren has added an EtherCAT interface to its range of integrated communication interfaces.

The CANopen over EtherCAT (CoE) function allows the servo motors to act as slaves in an EtherCAT network. CANopen over EtherCAT utilises the same objects as CANopen. Dunkermotoren uses standardised DSP402 objects for positioning, monitoring and configuring servo drives.

The company can provide the right drive solutions for a wide variety of application areas. Users can choose from a broad range of modular drive components. This enables machine manufacturers to design drives that are optimally aligned to specific requirements. In addition to motors, Dunkermotoren offers a broad spectrum of planetary and worm gearboxes, brakes and encoders in a well conceived modular system. This enables machine manufactures, working in collaboration with Dunkermotoren's drive specialists, to quickly assemble optimal drive configurations from standard components with minimum design effort.
