Ring light guides...

Creative Lighting is becoming just as important in the instrument and machinery marketplace as it is in the consumer world – sophisticated lighting adds that “extra edge” to differentiate one product from another.

Multitron has announced the availability of MENTOR’s Ring Light Guides. The shallow, single LED design is believed to be unique, enabling functional and aesthetic added-value to be simply added to the end-product.

A very wide range of applications are possible – for example switches, buttons, knobs, controllers, jacks or logos can all be illuminated. Totally homogeneous lighting is created using just the single LED.

The compact, space-saving design and flat 4mm deep construction means that PCB space is saved and the size of the housing is minimised compared with other solutions, for example a ring of multiple LEDs.

Many LED options are offered: monochrome, duo, RGB, or special colours. Two standard sizes are available with internal Light Guide diameters of 12mm or 16mm, both featuring a lighting ring up to 2mm thick.

Options include a choice of bare wires or wires terminated with a plug. The printed circuit board can be supplied with optional I²C controllers or series resistors.

In addition to the range of standard products, the modular product design enables customised solutions to be rapidly developed from standard products. In many cases, additional tooling costs are either non-existent or very low.

Special sizes are also possible as are special geometries eg rectangles, ellipses, triangles, crescents or free contour-following forms, such as a door lock shape. Depending on the complexity of the solution, one or more LEDs are used to ensure consistently uniform lighting.

A thousand times brighter.

A perovskite LED stack, emitting light thousand times brighter than state-of-the-art OLEDs has been presented by Imec. This result, published in this month’s Nature Photonics*, is a pivotal milestone towards a perovskite injection laser, promising exciting applications in image projection, environmental sensing, medical diagnostics, and beyond.
Transparent perovskite light emitting diodes on sapphire substrate with scaled emission area for injection of ultrahigh current densities.
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have revolutionized modern lighting and sensing technology. From applications in our homes to industry, LEDs are used for all lighting applications, from indoor lighting over TV screens to biomedicine. Widely used organic LEDs (OLEDs) today, for example in smartphone screens, employ organic thin-film materials as a semiconductor. However, their maximum brightness remains limited; just think of trying to read your smartphone screen on a very sunny day. Meanwhile, perovskites – a class of materials with a specific crystal structure – are proving their worth beyond solar cells. With excellent optoelectrical properties, low-cost processability and efficient charge transport, these materials have emerged in the last ten years as interesting candidates for light emission applications, such as LEDs.

However, while perovskites can withstand very high current densities, laser operation with the emission of high-intensity coherent light has not been reached yet. “In the ULTRA-LUX project, imec showed for the first time a PeLED architecture with low optical losses and pumped these PeLEDs to current densities that support the stimulated emission of light”, explained Prof. Paul Heremans, who is an imec Senior Fellow and Principal Investigator of the project. “This novel architecture of transport layers, transparent electrodes and perovskite as the semiconductor active material, can operate at electrical current densities tens of thousands of times higher (3 kA cm-2) than conventional OLEDs can.”

“With this architecture, imec enhanced amplified spontaneous emission, with an electrical assist of the conventional optical pumping. By doing so, imec demonstrated that electrical injection contributes 13 percent to the total amount of stimulated emission and thus approaches the threshold to achieve a thin film injection laser”, stated Robert Gehlhaar, imec project manager. “Reaching this landmark milestone towards high-power thin-film laser diodes is paving the way to exciting new applications of thin-film perovskite lasers.”

* The findings are published in the January 2024 edition of NaturePhotonics ‘Electrically Assisted Amplified Spontaneous Emission in Perovskite Light Emitting Diodes’. The ULTRA-LUX project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (Grant Agreement No.835133) with an Advanced Grant to Prof. Paul Heremans and is ongoing until September 30th, 2024.

Many light types and compact housing.

Contrast sensor can be flexibly integrated into packaging processes thanks to its multicolour capability and small size.

Leuze presents the smallest contrast sensor it has ever made for the packaging industry with the KRT 3C contrast sensor. Plant operators benefit from a compact device that can be used in many different ways: The KRT 3C detects reliably and position accurately even if there are only small contrast differences and with glossy surfaces or highly reflective materials. This is possible by the multicolor functionality: red, green, and blue light as well as white and laser red light will not allow any object or printed label to pass through unnoticed. It allows users to select the right light source for any material and contrast mark color for their packaging and labeling processes.

The KRT 3C detects contrasts very precisely and reliably and with a short response time of only 50 μs (laser: 125 μs) and minimal signal jitter. This helps to achieve optimal machine throughput. An advantage in small spaces: With its small dimensions of 11 x 32 x 17 mm, the sensor is designed for tight installation spaces. This means it can be fitted almost anywhere. Users can easily set up the KRT 3C via the integrated IO-Link interface. Changes are also made quickly when changing product formats.

The housing is robust: It meets degrees of protection IP67 and IP69K. The KRT 3C is also ECOLAB-certified. So it can even handle aggressive cleaning agents.

Efficient outside lighting.

EUCO Arena Sport Series LED drivers, which are designed to provide luminaire manufacturer’s a versatile solution for many industrial and commercial lighting applications such as high mast lighting, recreational sports lighting, harbors, airports, and parking lot lighting have been launched by Delta.

Built on three independent output channels with a maximum power of 500W (1500W total), these drivers have a wide operating temperature range that ensures performance and reliability for the most rugged applications. These drivers offer precise tuning of the drive current and are equipped with dimming circuitry for DALI-2 digital dimming to allow for adjustment of lighting levels from 0.1% to 100%. In addition to the driver architecture and circuit topology, Delta has achieved a very low typical current ripple of ≤1% peak-to-peak. That is important when it comes to televised events, since current ripple can cause LED flicker. Flickering lights affect the quality of sports broadcasts and limit slow motion options.

“Financial considerations play a significant part in recreational sports lighting, especially for stadiums. Energy efficiency, resource conservation, maintenance, and sustainability are important factors that should be taken into account for any lighting installation,” said Tim Lee, Vice President of Delta Electronics EMEA region. “And using LED lighting is not just about electricity costs. The metal halide lamps still installed at many arenas can take considerable time to warm up, for instance. If they turn off in the middle of an important event, it may take half an hour or more for the lights to come back on. Our new LED drivers for arena lighting offer exceptional efficiency as well as reliability so people attending and watching televised events can have consistently great experiences.”

The new EUCO Arena Sport LED drivers use solid heat sinks that provide more contact area with the cold plate for passive cooling as well as high-quality components to ensure a long operating life and high reliability. In developing the EUCO Arena Sport series drivers, one of the main design goals was to ensure good heat management so the product is capable of operating with high efficiency across a long service life.

The long lifetime and high reliability of EUCO Arena Sport LED drivers have passed the rigorous 5000hrs plus Accelerating Life Test (ALT) with harsh environment of 65°C temperature and 85deg humidity.

Depending on the installation environment and ambient temperatures, the maintenance intervals can be significantly increased. EUCO Arena Sport Series LED drivers can be located up to 200m away from the luminaire, which means the drivers no longer need to be on a high mast that requires a bucket truck (which can damage grass fields) or industrial climbers for driver maintenance and installation. With the EUCO Arena Sport drivers, facilities can perform driver maintenance on the ground. Furthermore, light designers can now use much lighter masts since the weight of the driver is no longer a consideration. Even when retrofitting LED lights at an existing facility, old masts can be easily replaced.

The EUCO Arena Sports LED drivers from Delta use high-quality components to maximize mean time to failure (MTTF). They also have a low inrush current, which allows facilities to reuse existing circuit breakers if desired. The operating life of these new LED driver pairs well with the long working life of LEDs themselves.

The EUCO Arena Sport LED drivers are available in two versions. The EUCO-1K5140GLA model is designed for DALI 2 control interfaces with the EUCO-1K5140GDA serving facilities that use RDM/DMX. Maximum output power for both versions is 1500W (three 500-watt channels) and default and maximum output current is 1400mA.

Hazardous location luminaires.

A new solution for the oil and gas industry to easily and safely illuminate land-based drilling rigs has been unveiled by Emerson. The Appleton™ Rigmaster LED linear luminaire streamlines the cumbersome and time-consuming task of installing and maintaining bright, energy-efficient lighting in hazardous areas on drilling rigs.

“Rig maintenance workers require linear luminaires that are rugged and long-lasting yet compact and easy-to-install, which can be a difficult solution to find for the engineers responsible for designing rig electrical systems,” said Mustafa Bengali, lighting product manager for Emerson Automation Solutions. “The Appleton Rigmaster solves these challenges by integrating LED technology into a lightweight, low-profile package that performs durably, is resistant to harsh conditions and damaging vibrations, yet allows faster, safer installations throughout the drilling rig.”

Minimal weight is a top priority for rig hands who must climb a derrick hundreds of feet high to install or change a fixture. The Appleton Rigmaster LED weighs a mere 4.5kg, making it significantly lighter than similar fixtures that can weigh as much as 13.5kg. Although compact, it delivers 8000 lumens of uniform lighting to promote a safer working environment. Even when used under a canopy or inside an analyser house, the diffused lens option makes the Rigmaster LED an ideal solution for comfortable, no-glare illumination. Moreover, the Rigmaster LED’s wide distribution of light translates into fewer fixtures being needed in the rig’s mud pit, shaker, cellar and derrick. High-efficiency LED drivers consume less than half the energy of standard T8 fluorescent fixtures, further lowering direct cost of operations and minimising strain on the diesel generators that typically power drilling rigs.

Along with being lightweight, the Appleton Rigmaster LED provides installation flexibility in hazardous locations by offering a variety of mounting options that are well suited for retrofits as well as new rig builds. An easy-to-access hinged wiring compartment with captive hardware makes the installation experience smooth and safe. A wide operating temperature range of -40° to 65° C, and NPT (National Pipe Thread Tapered) hubs on each end for through wiring make this fixture a user-centric solution. To complete the package, an LED life of 60,000+ hours means years of maintenance-free operation, unlike fluorescents that may fail in six months or less and require constant maintenance.

Given safety concerns due to round-the-clock, high vibration boring, secondary retention of a light fixture on drilling rigs is critical to prevent it from plunging from a high-rise mast. To help create a safer workplace environment, the Appleton Rigmaster LED features a looping safety cable through the fixture and around the mounting structure which helps secure the fixture. In addition, while some manufacturers screw on eyebolts, the Appleton Rigmaster LED provides five casted-in openings for safety cable retention points. The yoke bracket is also designed to ensure the bracket will stay in position regardless of heavy vibration and maintain its structural integrity. To take it a step further, captive hardware eliminates the possibility of a screw coming loose and falling out.

Built with a high degree of corrosion resistance, the Appleton Rigmaster LED features a gasketed, copper-free aluminium housing, plus a thermal shock and impact-resistant polycarbonate lens. It is certified for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Type 3R, 4 and 4X wet and marine type areas. The fixture also meets IP66 rating requirements of being ‘dust tight’ and protected against powerful jets of water.

Machine vision lighting controllers.

Gardasoft Vision has announced the launch of the FP220 series of high speed lighting controllers for machine vision. This new generation of dual channel controllers uniquely combines capabilities for high frequency, high power LED pulsing with outstanding low output current performance, making them suitable for a huge range of machine vision applications.

Designed for use with any LED lighting rated up to 3A, the FP200 series provides reproducible current control to deliver continuous or pulsed light output. It utilses enhanced technology for faster pulse rise times, with trigger frequencies up to 10kHZ for high speed pulsing applications such as line scan imaging. With a maximum pulse current of 20A, applications requiring high power, long lighting pulses such as UV curing can also be easily handled. Naturally full control of overdriving, pulse width and pulse delay are provided.

With overdriving capabilities up to 999% of the continuous LED rating value for high intensity short pulses, FP220 users benefit from Gardasoft’s patented SafeSenseTM and SafePowerTM technologies. SafeSenseTM regulates the pulse width timing and duty cycle according to the amount of overdriving in order to deliver the maximum light possible for the application without any possibility of damage to the LED. SafePowerTM provides automatic flexible operation with low heat dissipation for the controller itself.

The FP220 Series also offer excellent performance for low current applications, extending the application range for these controllers. Output current below 300mA can be controlled in 100µs steps and in 6 mA steps for higher currents. The accuracy and repeatability of output current below 300mA is ±1%, providing the levels of control needed for applications that are very sensitive to lighting variation.

Integration into machine vision systems is made easy since the FP220 can be configured using a web browser and with Ethernet or RS232 commands in the same way as Gardasoft’s other controllers. Versions compatible with Gardasoft’s triniti™ intelligent lighting platform are also available. The triniti platform provides an API and GigE Vision interface to control the light, and LEDs featuring a ‘triniti chip’ can exchange relevant performance data with the FP220 controller.
