The blue economy.


A conference on the Blue Economy will be held in Údarás na Gaeltachta’s head office in Na Forbacha,(Gaillimh IRL) on the 29th November 2022, as part of Asia Business Week. This conference, focussing on Marine Innovation and Offshore Wind Energy, will examine developments in the Blue Economy in Ireland and internationally.

Among the speakers on wind energy at next week’s conference will be Martin Murray, CEO of Asia Matters, Séamus Mc Cabe, senior development director with Corio Generation, Jayasurya Francis, India Director with the Global Council of Wind Energy and Dr. Edel O’ Connor, Business Development Director with the IMDO, the Irish Marine Development Office.

Seán Mulvany, senior investment manager with the Irish Strategic Investment Fund, will take part in the panel discussion on marine innovation, along with Máire Ní Éinniú, Blue Economy specialist with Údarás na Gaeltachta, Caroline Bocquel, Interim Chief Executive with Bord Iascaigh Mhara (Sea Fisheries) agus Dr. Colin Hannon, Senior Research Fellow at ATU.

Through their participation in Asia Business Week, Údarás na Gaeltachta aims to develop and strengthen connections between Asian countries and the west of Ireland, attract Asian investors to invest in businesses in the Gaeltacht and develop new markets for Gaeltacht companies.

Thermal imaging in the scientific field.

Teledyne FLIR is launching a five part series of English-language webinars on thermal imaging on 27th September 2022. 

The five different sessions will focus on the fact that cooled and uncooled detectors are manufactured for similar purposes (namely, to measure energy in the infrared range, typically temperature), but that - although the purpose is the same - the architecture of each type of detector results in very different, sometimes unique, capabilities.

The first session is on Tuesday, 27 September at 3 p.m. with the topic "Speed". During the session participants will learn about the differences between infrared detectors, readout electronics, integration times, frame rates and high-speed applications. Anyone interested can register free of charge at this link!

The four other webinars will cover topics such as spatial resolution, thermal sensitivity, spectral filter options and synchronisation and all participants of the first webinar will be automatically invited to the four further dates.

Security Certification launch.

The new ISASecure certification offering for industrial internet of things (IIoT) components based on the ISA/IEC 62443 series of standards has just been announced.

The IIoT Component Security Assurance (ICSA) certification was inspired by recommendations published in the joint ISA Global Security Alliance (ISAGCA) and ISA Security Compliance Institute (ISCI) study. Details of this landmark study are available in the Learning Center section of the ISASecure website and were presented during our October 2021 webinar. The study and resulting ISASecure IIOT certification scheme address the urgent need for industry vetted IIoT certification programs.

A live webinar this important new certification offering will be held on 7 September 2022. This webinar will provide an overview of the new ISASecure IIOT Device and Gateway certification program and its basis in the ISA/IEC 62443 set of industry standards.

Many real processes such as batch, fed-batch, cyclic, grade-change and all sorts of non-continuous processes require more than one Operating Envelope and that’s what this webinar will introduce. Envelopes can be made time-dependent by including time variables but even without a time variable it can be remarkable how models can cope with a changing relationship effectivel inferring time. Even continuous processes really have more than one operating Mode such as Start-Up and Shut-Down as well as Modes for Standby, different throughputs and Special Modes for, for instance, catalyst regeneration.    

"You’ve probably seen batch processes controlled by trying to follow a defined trajectory on a very small number of variables such as reactor temperature or concentration. We will show you versions of models with and without time variables which may give you food for thought."  

Operating Envelopes linked to form a chain allow control of the process into a multi-variable tube of hundreds of variables instead of just one or two and since the tube includes Result-variable range predictions find one or a chain of Operating Envelope better at recognising external disturbances and guiding the operation to achieve the desired end-points.

LIMS validation.

Webinar for EMC.

Schaffner are running a free Webinar on best practice design for EMC compliance of Industrial Equipment and Machines. Intended for manufacturers of variable-frequency drives and machine and control cabinet builders, all EMC-specific aspects of the latest international standards, their implementation and relevant solutions will be presented.

EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) has steadily increased in importance with the increased use of variable-frequency drives in industrial applications and will continue to grow as applications in SMART factories, Industry 4.0, the IoT and industrial automation increase.

As the needs for automated industrial production expand and the demand for artificial intelligence increases, systems are becoming more and more complex and the costs of any breakdown in the production of goods, both products and services, is of growing concern to manufacturers.

It has never been more important that electrical and electronic devices are designed and constructed in such a way that it complies with the EMC directives and standards with regard to interference immunity and interference emissions and that they are coordinated with each other in any system. In addition to the Machinery Directive, the legally binding EMC Directive, among others, must be complied with if machines cause electromagnetic interference or are impaired in their function by such interference.

According to the EMC Directive, machines and systems are equipment that must be designed and manufactured in compliance with the main requirements of Annex I of the EMC Directive. Only then a certificate of conformity may be issued for the machine, system, device (incl. control cabinet) and the CE mark may be applied.

The EMC Directive defines electromagnetic compatibility in Europe as follows:
"the ability of an apparatus, installation or system to operate correctly in its electromagnetic environment without causing electromagnetic interference which would prevent any other apparatus, installation, machine or system in this environment from operating as intended."

In effect the EMC Directive applies not only to manufacturers of variable-frequency drives, but also to machine and control cabinet builders and system integrators. In order to do consider these various industrial suppliers and industrial market participants, appropriate standards have been defined for this purpose to ensure an effective cooperation.

Webinars on industrial communications.

The seminars’ target groups are system integrators, development engineers, and technical decision-makers.

CAN in Automation (CiA) has scheduled web-based CAN and CANopen seminars to increase attendees safety in times of the coronavirus.

The CAN Seminars take place on September 23, and October 07, 2020.

The CANopen Seminars are on September 24 and October 08, 2020.

They provide in a compact format the contents of our well-known on-site seminars. The seminars, held in German language, discuss CAN and CANopen in depth including CAN FD and CANopen FD. Additionally an outlook e.g. to CAN XL is provided.

In the CAN online seminar, attendees learn the CAN principles, the differences between Classical CAN and CAN FD, which possibilities CAN communication offers and in which markets CAN is used. The event explains CAN as it is specified in ISO 11898-1:2015. This comprises the Classical CAN, the CAN FD protocol, as well as the CAN physical layer standards.

During the CANopen online seminar, participants learn the basic principles of CANopen, as specified in CiA 301. Furthermore, CANopen additional application layer functions as well as the basic principles of CANopen profiles are introduced. Additionally, attendees get an insight to the new CANopen FD protocol, according to CiA 1301. The seminar enables to select the right CANopen device for individual applications, to integrate devices in a proper control application, or to design the intended CANopen device behavior. In addition, there is enabled to assess the possibilities and effort to introduce CANopen FD in own projects.

RS Components has launched its latest initiative, tailored to all levels of education; from primary through to higher education. The series delivers aspirational online sessions to encourage innovative thinking and feed the students' creativity.

Basics of metering systems, flow computers and instrument validation software.

Cryptomining explored!

SolutionsPT is to host a free webinar exploring the evolving cyber security threat posed by Cryptomining infections and how they can be prevented, on Thursday, February 21st 2019.

Designed for Operational Technology (OT) professionals, the Introduction to Cryptomining webinar will examine the specific threat Cryptomining poses to OT environments and discuss the solutions that will enable organisations to guard against it.

Cryptomining is a malware threat that affects Industrial Control Systems (ICS), enabling hackers to use an infected PC’s resources to mine for digital currency. The webinar will explore how, if left unchecked, the infections can disrupt OT environments, causing hardware failure, massively increasing energy consumption and preventing systems from carrying out mission-critical tasks.

Unlike other malware attacks, Cryptomining attacks can also be extremely difficult to detect, even after a system has become infected, making them especially dangerous.

Working with large datasets - Webinars.

A significantly improved user experience working with large datasets is among important new features introduced with the new version 2.8 of C Visual Explorer (CVE) from Process Plant Computing Limited (PPCL).

A series of global webinars on 24 October will give process and control engineers the opportunity to interrogate the new features and learn about benefits specific to their own applications.

CVE is a unique process visualization tool that allows engineers to display hundreds of thousands of measurements across hundreds of variables, allowing them to interrogate historical process and laboratory data. CVE allows users to easily explore operating windows and operating envelopes based on their domain knowledge and without the need for deep understanding of higher mathematics.

Predictive Analytics is a time-consuming method which requires a data scientist to interpret the results, and which provides generalized answers through simplifications which can destroy much of the richness of the data. By contrast, Geometric Process Control (GPC) – a technology developed at PPCL – avoids these pitfalls.

By providing engineers with graphical tools to work with datasets spanning their entire plant, it allows them to create low-cost predictive models, without equations, to develop new process understanding quickly and easily.

GPC allows engineers to fully explore their data and make discoveries that they can’t now. It covers the entire process from incoming analysis through processing conditions to final quality variables, KPIs and performance variables.

Engineers have been using the basic features of CVE for many years to work more efficiently with their plant data. It allows faster and easier management of key areas including alarm rationalization, process optimization and plant troubleshooting as well as building and evaluating real-time operating envelope models from C Process Modeller (CPM), PPCL’s online real-time process monitoring and event prediction product.

The new features introduced with CVE 2.8 represent advances in three key areas: improved user experience working with large datasets; across the board display improvements; and new options for alarm-based variables. These will be demonstrated in real time during the October webinars, starting with analysis of a process with 750 variables over a year at 10-minute intervals.

For improved working with large datasets, network versions now use a 64-bit executable, effectively allowing datasets limited only by the computer’s memory. Datasets in excess of 200 million values (product of variables and time points) have been routinely used on typical desktop machines during the development of version 2.8. To help users work with these large datasets, many common tasks have been simplified or automated, including bulk file join and append and bulk creation of function variables. Variable names can be colored, allowing classes of variables to be defined, for instance-controlled variables, valve positions, or even definition by unit.

Display improvements include normalization options on distribution plots, which allow much easier comparison of populations within the operation. More query colors are also now included, along with the ability to visually remove background data without using focus, as well as many new plot options, including cumulative distributions.

New options for alarm-based variables (alarm count and annunciation rate) now allow direct comparison of alarm performance across different modes of operation, in addition to the existing capability of comparing different alarm sets. For the user the benefit is much quicker evaluation of existing and proposed alarm limits across the range of plant operation. Summary statistics, such as total alarms and clean board rate, are always displayed.

A pre-processing filter has also been added to read the output from the online monitoring tool, C Process Modeller (CPM). This makes it much quicker and easier to analyze replay results and evaluate model performance.

New licencing options make CVE more easily affordable for geographically dispersed organizations.

Strain gauge webinar.

Following on from a successful series of webinars, HBM has announced the date for its latest free webinar, ‘Minimising Measurement Uncertainty: how to set up strain gauge based precision measurement chains’, which will take place on February 22nd 2018 at 9am (GMT).

SIS inspections & tests.

The International Society of Automation (ISA) and its promotional partner, Beamex, Inc., will co-host a free webinar 31 January 2018 on documenting safety instrumented system (SIS) inspections and tests.

Paul Gruhn is a Global Functional Safety Consultant at aeSolutions in Houston, Texas. Gruhn has specialized in safety systems for 30 years. He is an ISA Life Fellow, co-chair of the ISA 84 standards committee, the developer and instructor of ISA courses on SIS, and the primary author of the ISA book on the subject. Gruhn developed the first commercial control and safety system modeling software more than 25 years ago. He received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from IIT in Chicago, IL.

Gruhn is a professional engineer (P.E.) licensed in Texas, a certified functional safety expert (CFSE), a member of the control system engineer P.E. exam team, and an ISA 84 expert. He is the 2018 ISA President-elect/Secretary.

Ned Espy, Technical Director at Beamex, possesses more than 27 years of direct field experience in instrumentation measurement applications. He has been concentrating on calibration management at Beamex for more than 20 years.

Espy is a recognized expert in developing best practices for calibration, with a particular focus on temperature, pressure and multi-variable instruments. A consistent editorial contributor to leading industry publications, Espy has received significant acclaim within the automation industry. Each day, Espy teaches calibration best practices and provides technical support to end users and to the Beamex sales team in North America.

Roy Tomalino, a Beamex Engineer, possesses more than 16 years of technical training experience. He has served as a trainer, certified developer and technical advisor on four continents to people from more than 40 countries.

Tomalino was a key player at Honeywell at its Fort Collins, Colorado office, where he supported the “DocuMint” Calibration Management Software and numerous calibrators as a trainer, certified developer and technical advisor. He also served as a worldwide trainer at Hewlett Packard. Today, Tomalino serves as a Beamex “evangelist,” supporting customers and the Beamex team in North America.

A smart collaboration.

Copa-Data is inviting plant managers and engineers to register for its upcoming webinar ‘Smart Factory solutions with Copa-Data and Microsoft Azure’.
