Virtual physics conference.

HBK has launched the countdown to its virtual Product Physics Conference, taking place from 13th to 15th October 2020.

The HBK Product Physics Conference is to bring together interested parties, from an international community of users and partners, to learn more about how leaders of the global test and measurement community overcome their challenges.

A wide range of topics, suitable for different types of engineers will be covered, including industrial electronics and measurement chains set ups, improving the durability and reliability of products, data insight, automating analytics for huge quantities of sensor data, electric power testing, strain measurement, dynamic weighing, sound and vibration analysis, electroacoustics and more.

Presented over three days, this free, user-centric online event will demonstrate how HBK’s customers have implemented its tools to address engineering challenges and innovate in their industries. Attendees can also join interactive discussion panels, dedicated networking areas and presentations.

High temperature strain gauges.

Through its collaboration with the Japanese manufacturer Kyowa Electronic Instruments, HBM – a market leader in the field of test and measurement – is pleased to announce the arrival of its new KFU series of strain gauges for high temperatures of up to 350°C.


Suitable for structural tests at exceptionally high temperatures, the latest series of KFU strain gauges are pre-wired and come equipped with a 1 meter long, high temperature protection cable.

Available in grid lengths of 2 mm and 5 mm as well as in different versions, such as linear, T (with two measuring grids) or R (with three measuring grids) rosettes, depending on the application’s requirements, the KFU strain gauges are also available with temperature responses matched to steel, austenitic steel, and aluminium.

The latest series of strain gauges can be used at high temperatures for specified durations; at 350 °C for 72 hours or at 300 °C for 360 hours. Typical applications include strain measurements in autoclaves or environments with steam.

The KFU strain gauge series are the first products manufactured by HBM in collaboration with the Japanese manufacturer Kyowa Electronic Instruments. This cooperation of two technology leaders enabled HBM to complement its range of products with additional, fascinating sensors, such as those for very high temperatures, and offer these to clients in future.

Force economically.

HBM offers a flexible solution for economical acquisition of large compressive forces with their new C6B force transducer,. The sensor is cost-effective and specially designed for rugged and dynamic applications.

The C6B force transducer acquires nominal (rated) forces from 200 kN to 10 MN with an HBM accuracy class of 0.5. Typical applications include the construction industry, heavy industry and metalworking as well as dynamic measurement tasks in research and development. C6B is extremely rugged and has a hermetically welded housing made of rustproof materials. In the version with integrated cable, the sensor achieves degree of protection IP68. Since the C6B is structured in the shape of a compression bar, the sensor has a very short displacement, enabling it to be used in very fast measurements such as impact tests.

In comparison to the predecessor model C6A, the new C6B force transducer is not only more rugged, but also more flexible. Users benefit from fast, easy start-up because the sensor is optimally adapted to the application. Different electrical connection types are available for uncompensated installation. The C6B is also available with load applications, which reduce the measurement uncertainty in the application. The transducer versions up to and including 2 MN have an internal bore that allows for the fold-back arm. Another advantage during start-up: The C6B can be mounted horizontally or upside down depending on requirements

Gateway module introduced.

The QuantumX CX27C gateway module from HBM is the latest addition to the QuantumX modular data acquisition system It offers test engineers maximum flexibility in testing their applications and simultaneous integration of up to 199 sensors in PROFINET IRT in real time.

It makes the ideal choice for quick results even in highly automated test benches with small to high channel counts, such as component, powertrain or durability test benches.

In combination with HBM's catman PC software, sensor and signal data can be viewed, analyzed and recorded with sample rates up to 100 kS / s per channel, without affecting real-time automation tasks. The gateway modules perfectly play with the QuantumX and the ultra-rugged SomatXR family, even in a distributable way.

Integration is quick and easy by using automatic sensor recognition (TEDS), auto mapping function or parameter file generation and some diagnosis services.

The QuantumX CX27B gateway module for EtherCAT applications is also available.

Loadcells for harsh but hygenic applications.

The new Z6R Bending Beam Load Cell now available from HBM, has been specifically developed for use in harsh environments and applications with high requirements for hygiene.

Designed for maximum capacities ranging from 20 to 200 KG and featuring an accuracy class of C3, the Z6R is particularly suitable for use in food processing, production of pharmaceuticals or packaging of building materials.

Manufactured in stainless steel, the robust enclosure can withstand mechanical stress and is not affected by dirt, humidity or aggressive environments with acids and alkalis. Featuring an innovative design, without any gaps or edges, the Z6R is easy to clean and can therefore help to reduce costly downtime. Furthermore, the new Z6R is also ingress protected to IP68, with IP69K as an option for added protection. In addition, as with most load cells from HBM, the Z6R is also suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (IECEx: Zone 1 + 21, Zone 2 + 21).

Mechanically and electrically compatible with the market leading Z6 load cell from HBM, which has been successfully incorporated into various projects throughout the world, integration with existing systems or load cell replacement is quick and simple. Bending beam load cell.

HBM’s new Z6R bending beam load cell has been designed for maximum capacities ranging from 20 to 200 kg. It is outstanding for its extremely robust enclosure, dirt-repellent design, and compatibility with the Z6 load cell. Typical fields of application can be found in the packaging or food-processing industries.

The robust enclosure withstands mechanical stress and is not affected by dirt, humidity, and aggressive media. Owing to its innovative design, without any gaps or edges, the Z6R load cell is easy to clean. Scale manufacturers and system operators, thus, benefit from precise weighing results up to accuracy class C3, even in harsh environments.

Merger to provide sensors, data acquisition, preparation, evaluation & engineering services.

HBM is to merge its activities with BKSV (Brüel and Kær Sound and Vibration) from 1 January 2019. Both owned by the British entity Spectris Plc, the new company will be named HBK (Hottinger, Brüel and Kjær).

“Brüel and Kjær and HBM are both premium hardware providers in measurement with a strong focus on software. By combining their activities, the two companies can deliver an integrated offering, combining sensors, data acquisition, preparation, evaluation and engineering services into one solution for its customers” says Eoghan Ó Lionaird, Business Group Director responsible for the Test and Measurement segment.

They are global leaders in their respective disciplines and have complementary expertise across the measurement chain. By leveraging their respective strengths, the aim is to create a business with the capabilities, breadth and scale to deliver differentiated customer value, for example, in the domains of propulsion, durability, safety and noise, vibration and harshness.

“This merger losely with the Spectris strategy of focusing on the provision of complete solutions combining hardware, software and related services and will enable us to provide a broader service with increased value to BKSV and HBM customers,” according to Ó Lionard.

In preparation of the merge, a new management team has been selected, drawing on the strengths and expertise from both HBM and BKSV. Merger preparation activities will be undertaken from now through to the end of 2018, and during this phase, both companies will operate in existing structures. All existing HBM agreements, points of contact, procedures, partnerships etc. will continue as normal.

Digital signal measurement.

The MX460B-R digital measurement module from HBM,  is the latest addition to its rugged and flexible SomatXR Data Acquisition System.

Suitable for measuring torque, rotational speed, angle, position, or displacement in harsh environments, the MX460B-R is a 4-channel, digital impulse and frequency measurement module which is suitable for precise acquisition of digital signals in a range of mobile applications such as vehicle testing and test benches.

Also able to acquire information resulting from pulse width measurements or crank angle sensors to facilitate TDC (Tope Dead Centre) or angle-based data analysis in combustion testing, the latest module allows torsional vibration analysis and differential angle calculation in real time.

Designed specifically for use in harsh environments, the MX460B-R module can be operated in a wide temperature range of -40°C to +80°C. Encased in a robust design, which is highly resistant to shock and vibration, the MX460B-R is also IP65 and IP67 protection rated.

The popular SomatXR data acquisition system from HBM facilitates use in harsh environments. Extremely reliable, precise and protected from humidity, dust, shock and vibration, the modular system is well suited to be used in a variety of applications such as vehicle testing, stationary measurements and structural health monitoring. Offering a flexible solution, SomatXR modules can also be used in combination with other data acquisition systems to create an individual and modular solution. The modules can then communicate via Ethernet TCP/IP and are synchronised using IEEE 1588 (PTPv2).

Measuring stress under pressure!

When Terex Pegson® MPS needed a reliable and flexible system to measure stress on its LJ5139 stone crushing machine, it turned to HBM to provide a comprehensive and effective solution.

Following a thorough study of the issues faced by Terex Pegson® MPS, HBM specified its rugged DAQ, SomatXR series, which is particularly suitable for use in harsh environments. To compliment this package, HBM also suggested the Somat MX1615B-R module and related accessories, which included RF-9 strain gauge rosettes.

Given the demanding environment, it was important that Terex Pegson® MPS specified the correct equipment. “Often faced with wet and arduous conditions, the ability to operate reliably under harsh conditions and sudden impacts was a key consideration for the customer when it came to suggesting the SomatXR system” explains Gregg Todd, HBM Mobile Data Acquisition Specialist.

The powerful SomatXR data acquisition system is specifically developed for use in harsh environments. The modules provide a wide temperature range and are protected from humidity, dust, shock and vibration.

The data acquisition system provides a web interface for simple operation without any software installation. This allows for convenient channel parameterisation, monitoring of measurement jobs and visualisation of measured data far away from the measuring point. This was a particularly significant feature for Terex® MPS, given the nature of the measurement task.

Another factor which was taken into consideration when specifying the Somat XR series was the operating conditions. For instance, when operating under such extreme conditions, it’s often hard to anticipate all of the problems that may occur, such as losing measurement data due to unforeseen events, such as a power failure. The SomatXR system enables data to be continuously recorded. This means that should a failure interrupt a test, recorded data up until that point will be saved. This was a particularly relevant feature in terms of the long term tests, typically performed by Terex® MPS.

HBM data acquisition systems are suitable for a wide range of mobile testing applications. Despite the immense load requirements and extreme environmental conditions, HBM was able to provide Terex® MPS with a reliable and flexible solution.

In addition to specifying and supplying Terex® MPS with a system to meet its needs, HBM also provided engineers with valuable training and continued support, where needed.

Strain guide!

HBM has launched its new Online Guide to Strain Measurement which contains a wealth of practical information and valuable tips from industry leading experts.

The new online portal, which looks at selection, installation, data acquisition, and analysis of electrical as well as optical strain gauges - namely those based on Fiber Bragg Grating technology (FBG) -, provides users with an easy and intuitive step-by-step guide.

Strain gauges have been around for almost 80 years and continue to be key assets for measuring fatigue and testing materials for productivity and safety reasons. However, when it comes to strain measurement, businesses and asset owners can sometimes feel intimidated due to a lack of information, or even information overload and might give up their attempts to learn more about this topic. Bragg meters.

The new FS22 Industrial BraggMETER optical measurement units now available from the HBM FiberSensing industrial interrogator range. These units are specifically designed to interrogate Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)* based sensors in industrial environments.

HBM FiberSensing Industrial BraggMETER optical interrogators have an Ethernet interface, which enable remote connection to any standard PC through TCP/IP. Featuring easy to use software, which can be installed on the control PC, data acquisition and archiving and definition of measurement configurations can also be easily achieved.

Available in different versions, the FS22 industrial BraggMETER is available in two versions; static (1 S/s) and dynamic (50 S/s, 100 S/s, 200 S/s, 500 S/s and now 1000 S/s), with 1, 4 or 8 channels. Furthermore time synchronisation over the network can now be improved with the integration of the NTP protocol in the interrogator internal processing unit.

In addition, for reliable peak value detection, a Smart Peak Detection function has now been incorporated into the FS22 (static) BraggMETER interrogators’ real-time operating system.

Easy to install, the new industrial optical interrogator range meets the required reliability and versatility required to be used in both laboratory testing and field deployment in civil, aeronautics, energy and R&D. HBM FiberSensing interrogators are available in standard, rack-mountable and portable models.

BraggMETER interrogators employ proven continuous swept laser scanning technology. They include a traceable wavelength reference that provides continuous calibration to ensure system accuracy over long term operation.

Pressure transducers.

As part of its outstanding range of pressure sensors and transducers, the new P3MB and P3MBP from HBM provides reliable and secure test results, of up to 3,000 bar, with an accuracy class of up to 0.1.
Suitable for both static and highly dynamic measurement tasks, the latest series of pressure transducers from HBM provides a flexible solution. Reliably proven, the leading range of pressure transducers have been successfully used in a variety of diverse fields of application, which range from transmission test rigs and diesel injection pumps to oil pressure measurements and hydraulic applications.

For measurements up to 15,000 bar, such as those required for hydraulic test benches, water jet cutting, and diesel injecting, the P3MBB BlueLine version features three different nominal pressure ranges (5,000, 10,000 and 15,000) and a 0.3 accuracy class.

By incorporating strain gauge technology, the new P3MB and P3MBP return exact and reliable measurement results, even for dynamic measurement tasks with high numbers of load cycles.

Manufactured in stainless steel and designed to withstand high pressure, all pressure transducers in the HBM range feature a one-piece design, which ensures there are no seam welds or potential weak spots on the body of the transducer.

The latest range of pressure transducers from HBM are also corrosion resistant and feature a protection rating of IP67 which makes them suitable for use in adverse or ambient conditions.

Based on strain gauge technology, the latest range of pressure transducers from HBM provide reliable and trustworthy results, even in dynamic applications, with a large number of load cycles from the lowest pressures all the way up to 15,000 bar.

Strain gauge webinar.

Following on from a successful series of webinars, HBM has announced the date for its latest free webinar, ‘Minimising Measurement Uncertainty: how to set up strain gauge based precision measurement chains’, which will take place on February 22nd 2018 at 9am (GMT).

Aimed at all measurement engineers in charge of planning or taking measurements, as well as users performing measurement data analysis, this latest webinar from the HBM Academy, will offer a general introduction to strain gauge based high precision measuring chains and is designed to help individuals choose the right reference transducers (force, torque and pressure).

Presented by Dr. André Schäfer, Development Manager for High Precision Measurement Chains at HBM, this 30 minute webinar will discuss the factors which can influence strain gauge based measurements and reveal the requirements for precision bridge amplifiers. Also offering a selection of valuable tips and tricks, this webinar will also provide participants with a series of practical application exercises.

Designed to fit in with the challenging time constraints, which can often make attending relevant training courses difficult, this webinar can also be easily accessed at a later date or simply used as a refresher course. As an added benefit, all registered participants will receive a link to the webinar, via email, after the presentation.

Mobile measurement!

HBM has developed the SCOUT55 Amplifier for mobile measurement.

Suitable for a wide range of servicing and calibration tasks, the SCOUT55 provides a light weight and cost-effective solution. The SCOUT55 is housed in a dust-protective casing which protects it against external influences. Easy to transport, the SCOUT55 from HBM also features a sturdy carry handle, which can, additionally, be used as a stand.

SCOUT55 processes the signals of force, pressure, displacement and torque transducers as well as load cells based on various technologies. Featuring a parameter memory for storage of up to eight data sets (formulations), two peak-value memories, and four limit value switches, the output of the measured data can be accessed through the freely scalable analogue output, the RS232 serial interface and the optional RS485.

Featuring an easy-to-read, digital LED display for test results and intuitive control through a robust keypad with seven button element, the SCOUT55 is the ideal measuring amplifier for mobile use in industrial environments.

Processor offers inteligent solution!

HBM has introduced its new CP52 Communication Processor (CP), which has been exclusively designed for use with the widely acclaimed MGCplus Data Acquisition System.

Successor to the CP22 and CP42, the updated CP52 which features built in intelligence, comes with a variety of flexible functions which offers users added value, such as two native interfaces. This enables users to utlise one of the interfaces for data acquisition and the other to drive the control system, for example, by a User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

Featuring improved connectivity and flexibility, further improvements to the update also mean that 512 measurement channels can now be connected to the CP52, as opposed to the previous maximum, which were only 256. Measurement data can also be recorded on a standard USB stick for additional data security.

The new CP52, which features synchronisation based on the Precision Time Protocol (PTP), also means that no matter what amplifier is used in the same measurement project, with the MGCplus, all are perfectly synchronised.

The MGCplus from HBM is a scalable and configurable data acquisition system for laboratory and test stand use which can be used to acquire data on force, strain, displacement, torque, voltage, current, temperature and many other parameters.

HBM has upgraded their customer support services by including a ‘Tips and Tricks’ section on their official website. They provide an extensive collection of technical articles, tutorials, check lists and videos covering topics on data acquisition, measurement technology, stress analysis and industrial process control.

To cater to all customers HBM offers technical support for all measurement tasks via in person meetings, telephone calls, email correspondence or live chat.

Load cells for weighing.

A leading multi head weighing machine manufacturer in Hampshire (GB) has specified PW12C load cells from HBM – market leader in the field of Weighing Technology for its latest range of checkweighers.

Designed to accurately weigh a wide range of rigid packs, from 10g to 60kg, in the food and packaging markets, the latest range of sophisticated weighing machinery, which incorporates the PW12C load cell, offers a simple and reliable solution, even at very fast speeds.

Ideal for general weighing tasks with high maximum capacities, the PW12C features a maximum platform size of 800 x 800 mm and features a 50kg to 750kg maximum capacity.

Also suitable for use in applications where speed and accuracy are crucial factors, the PW12C is available in Atex Zone 1/21 that includes FM-approval or as an Atex Zone 1/22 version. Celebrating strain gauge birthday!

To help start the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the strain gauge, which will take place next year; HBM is running a series of webinars, which will take place on 14 -17 November 2017 at 9am.

Starting with “An Introduction to Measurements using Strain Gauges”, on November 14th 2017, this webinar is the ideal opportunity to get your first introduction into strain gauges or simply brush up on your existing knowledge.  Reflecting on the history and development of the strain gauge over the years, “An Introduction to Measurements using Strain Gauges” will discuss the pros and cons of using strain gauges, before looking at the many different kinds of applications available in the area of experimental stress analysis. 

Usually applied to measuring bodies using adhesives, Selecting the Right Strain Gauges, Adhesives and Covering Agents” will explain how to select the correct adhesive, depending on the material and temperature range.  Taking place at 9am on Wednesday November 15th 2017, participants can find out which kind of strain gauge is suitable for different types of applications, learn about the difference between cold and hot curing adhesives and discover how to choose and apply the correct adhesive, based on the measurement task to hand. 

When it comes to measuring the resistance change in a strain gauge with the Wheatstone Bridge, “Applying the Wheatstone Bridge Circuit with Strain Gauges” which takes place on Thursday 16th November 2017 at 9am, will guide individuals through the basics.  This webinar will look at how to distinguish between the Wheatstone bridge circuit in quarter, half and full bridge circuits and explain the different measurement applications.  Participants will also be given the opportunity to learn more about the possibilities of temperature compensation by using the Wheatstone bridge circuit.

Concluding the week with “How to Properly Install Strain Gauges” on Friday 17th November 2017 at 9am, this webinar will focus on the steps which need to be considered when installing strain gauges; from understanding the requirements of the underlying material, to the preparation of the surface and finally; to the choice of the correct adhesive.  Including practical installation tips and tricks, this webinar will also offer participants the chance to learn which optical and electrical tests can be carried out after having installed the strain gauges.
