Coriolis mass flow meters offer greater flexibility.

Emerson has introduced the Micro Motion™ G-Series line of Coriolis mass flow and density meters, the most compact dual-tube Coriolis mass flow meters on the market. The Micro Motion G-Series Coriolis Flow and Density Meter offers the same level of quality and reliability as standard designs, but in a much smaller and lighter form factor. Compared to traditional volumetric flow meters, it provides direct mass flow measurement, immunity of process temperature/pressure changes and advanced process and health diagnostics.

Emerson has also introduced the Micro Motion 4700 Coriolis Transmitter, adding new capabilities for use with its Micro Motion family of Coriolis flow meters. The transmitter can be retrofitted to most existing Micro Motion sensors, and ordered with all new meters, including the new Micro Motion G-Series. The combination of these two new products provides an ideal solution for chemical and other industrial applications.

Micro Motion G-Series Flow and Density Meter

Micro Motion G-Series Flow Meters are ideal for chemical plants that need to improve safety, reduce energy use, and minimise emissions. They are available with Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), Safety Integrity Level SIL 2 and SIL3 certification, and are designed to meet NAMUR NE 132 guidelines. Hygienic models will also be available in the first half of 2024 for food and beverage, life sciences, and other applications where 3-A or European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) certification is required.

Although Coriolis meters do not require upstream or downstream straight pipe runs like many other flow measurement technologies, some models have a larger footprint, limiting their use in confined spaces. Emerson’s new meters address this issue with a face-to-face dimension of less than 12 inches for the 1-inch line size model. The compact form factor is complemented by a significant reduction in weight, providing benefits for transportation, installation and safety.

The flexibility in communication and power options reduces installation cost and complexity. Connection to host systems is available via a combination of discrete and 4-20mA HART® signals, or via digital connections, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® technology, and power over Ethernet (PoE) solutions, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, or PROFINET. Each of these digital connections enables two-way communication of a variety of data, including process variables, diagnostics, status, configuration and calibration. This data can be used to implement proactive maintenance practices and digital transformation initiatives.

Six lines sizes are available, from ¼-inch to 3-inch, and product selection is provided via simplified and streamlined configuration. Direct laser-etch tagging provides durability in even the harshest conditions, and it eliminates the need for adhesive labels and spot-welded tags. MyEmerson digital specification tools are easily accessible through a QR code, providing a quick and easy solution for storing and accessing information related to each flow meter.

Micro Motion 4700 Config I/O Coriolis Transmitter

End users have deployed Micro Motion Coriolis flow meters extensively in a variety of industries, including chemical, food and beverage, life sciences, oil and gas, petrochemical, and others. Many of these end users are interested in switching to an upgraded transmitter with additional features and benefits, while avoiding the expense of changing existing flow meter installations, which typically have provided decades of trouble-free service.

The Micro Motion 4700 Coriolis Transmitter addresses this issue by providing a retrofit adapter solution to replace the legacy transmitter in existing installations. Once installed, the transmitter will automatically interface with the existing flow meter, adding capabilities just as if it were a new application. The transmitter is compatible with all Micro Motion ELITE® (CMF and CMFS), F-Series, H-Series, R-Series, T-Series, HPC-Series, and the new G-Series Coriolis flow meters.

The transmitter adds many new capabilities, including a Bluetooth connectivity option, which provides wireless communications at distances up to 50 feet (15 metres) between the transmitter and Emerson’s AMS Device Configurator. Wireless access via Bluetooth technology allows users to configure the meter, access Smart Meter Verification diagnostics, and access process information.

Using the AMS Device Configurator application, users can quickly locate and identify transmitters, and then perform tasks related to configuration, device status and diagnostics. Reliability is improved because transmitters no longer need to be opened for access, protecting them from exposure to the environment.

The transmitter has three configurable wired I/O channels to provide connectivity options, including 4-20mA HART, frequency output, discrete output and input, and Modbus RS-485. The Micro Motion 4700 provides an ideal solution for upgrades to existing Micro Motion Coriolis installations, and it is available as an option to provide advanced capabilities for new installations.

Flow Meter for demanding hydrogen applications.

Emerson has introduced a new Micro Motion™ Coriolis flow meter designed for high-pressure hydrogen dispensing and chemical injection applications where measurement accuracy and safety are essential. The Micro Motion Coriolis HPC015 flow meter is capable of a flow accuracy margin of 0.5% for gas and 0.1% for liquid mass flow measurement, a significant improvement over existing meters. The meter performs under wide pressure and temperature fluctuations, ensuring security and reliability, while onboard diagnostic tools eliminate the need for pre-inspections or interim maintenance checks, saving time and money.

The demand for hydrogen, an abundant and renewable energy source, is growing due to its use in fuel cells for low-emission vehicles, fertilizers, glass and metal production, as well as the energy sector. Hydrogen is stored at very high pressure – usually at around 963 bar (13,960 psi) – which creates challenges to find equipment to aid in producing, storing and dispensing the gas safely and effectively.

“The HPC015 is an extremely accurate, safe and reliable solution to measure flow at high pressures,” said Tim Drost, senior Coriolis product marketing manager at Emerson. “It was designed specifically to meet the challenges our customers face in the hydrogen fuel and chemical injection spaces.”

One of the main application uses for the HPC015 in accurately measuring the flow of hydrogen gas is to effectively manage costs in large-scale custody transfer applications, such as public transportation systems, where hydrogen fuels are used to power hybrid bus engines.

A second, significant market for the HPC015 is in other high-pressure applications such as injecting methanol, corrosion inhibitors and other chemicals downhole at high pressure; an application that poses particular challenges. The HPC015 is designed to accurately and reliably dose chemicals at pressures up to 1,060 bar (15,374 psi) to ensure pipeline integrity and avoid events like plugging, which can halt production.

In addition to safety concerns, offshore platforms cannot afford to stand idle while waiting for a service call to troubleshoot an instrumentation problem, which in many instances requires an onsite visit by a technician. Space is at a premium on offshore platforms, which makes the small footprint of the HPC015 ideally suited, and when combined with the Smart Meter Verification capability of the HPC015, a facility can run meter diagnostics and meet regulatory standards without needing to remove the meter from the process line.

The HPC015 is offered in three pressure tiers – 482 bar (6,991 psi), 963 bar (13,960 psi), and 1,060 bar (15,374 psi), which offers added flexibility to setting the correct pressure range for each application.

Coriolis flowmeters help meet regulatory requirements & reduce annual costs!

An RHI Normag AS plant in Porsgrunn, Norway, has reduced maintenance costs, minimised plant downtime and improved the accuracy of energy-use measurement by using Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters.

Six Micro Motion CMF Series flowmeters measure the mass flow of natural gas and recycled fuel oil used in kilns that produce magnesium oxide refractory material. The highly accurate measurements are used for the fiscal transfer of gas and oil, and are also submitted to KLIF, Norway’s national environmental agency, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
"Our plant is a large energy-user, so accurate measurements of gas and oil are critical to our operations," said Merethe Pepevnik, Technical Manager, RHI Normag AS. "Since our process is continuous, reliability is very important. Interruptions to recalibrate or refurbish measurement devices are both inconvenient and costly. We chose Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis mass flowmeters because they are reliable, accurate and simple."

The RHI Normag plant produces raw materials for refractory material, to be used in a wide range of industries. In the past, turbine flow meters with a density measurement system were used for custody transfer measurement of oil and natural gas. The measurements were also used to calculate CO2 emissions for reporting to KLIF.

However, due to wear and tear over the years, the measurement system’s accuracy was poor and it needed to be calibrated twice per year to maintain performance. This meant that four systems had to be taken out of the line for calibration/refurbishment at a cost of 25,000 Euros each, incurring a total annual cost of 150,000 Euros.

To reduce maintenance costs, minimise plant downtime and accurately measure energy usage, RHI needed a measurement system that would be acceptable to KLIF, provide accurate data for custody transfer, and require minimal maintenance.

The first four mass flowmeters were installed on two kilns during the summer of 2009. One flowmeter on each kiln was used for recycled oil, and one for natural gas. In 2012, larger capacity Coriolis flowmeters were installed to measure higher gas flow rates.

The flow data is used to determine the amount of gas being purchased from the supplier, removing the risk of over, or underpayment. In addition, with their mass flow accuracy of ±0.35% for gas and ±0.1% for oil, these flowmeters comfortably meet the requirements of KLIF.

RHI uses Emerson’s Smart Meter Verification to regularly check the meters’ health and performance. This easy-to-use, automatic diagnostic tool quickly verifies the measuring tube integrity and electronics (sensor, drive and signal processing) without interrupting the flow measurement – reducing downtime and eliminating the need for twice-yearly maintenance/calibration.

Emerson’s Micro Motion ProLink® configuration and diagnostic software tool is used to generate a meter health report every month, identifying any flow-tube damage that could compromise meter performance. It also records if the meter zero was changed relative to the factory zero, or to the last successfully established zero on site. These reports are retained for yearly audit by the authorities and support regulatory compliance.

"Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis flowmeters have been proven in use over several years in our plant," added Pepevnik. "Even the first meter installed in 2009 has not required adjustment. Their performance has enabled us to significantly reduce our annual maintenance costs, simplify the process of meeting regulatory requirements, and be confident that we are paying for only the energy we actually use. Based on these factors our initial investment has been recovered in just 6 months."

Super Duplex delivers excellent resistance to high chloride levels found in the oil field, such as formation water, and is particularly well suited for measuring production fluids and medium pipeline pressure applications. Because of the corrosive compounds in crude oil, natural gas and other hydrocarbon streams, more reliable and robust meters are required that can deliver highly accurate measurement over wide flow ranges.

The Micro Motion ELITE High Capacity Coriolis meter offers ± 0.10 per cent mass and volume flow accuracy for liquids, and mass accuracy of ± 0.35 per cent for gas. The High Capacity Coriolis meter also offers density accuracies of ± 0.0005 g/cc and can handle a maximum liquid flow capacity of 2,550,000 kg/h.

Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis meters are designed with no moving parts so they are not subject to wear or measurement drift associated with the rotating components of positive displacement (PD) or turbine meters. In addition, Micro Motion Smart Meter Verification delivers measurement confidence by verifying the complete meter performance (sensor, drive and signal processing) while the operation is flowing and without removing the meter from the line. Smart Meter Verification can check meter performance on a set schedule or at the touch of a button in minutes.

Micro Motion Coriolis meters lead the process manufacturing industry in quality, measurement performance and reliability, and are part of Emerson's broad range of intelligent, digital field devices that power the PlantWeb™ digital plant architecture. Further cost savings, increased plant availability, and enhanced safety and environmental compliance are achieved when the flowmeters are integrated into the PlantWeb digital plant architecture.
