The future of automated storage.

A system that combines speed, safety, and scalability.

With e-commerce booming and customers expecting faster deliveries, Jungheinrich recognised that warehouses need a smarter, fully automated way to process goods while making the most of limited space. This insight led to the development of an innovative solution that redefines automated storage: the PowerCube, an automated compact container storage system.
“Our customers need a way to use limited space efficiently while meeting growing demands for faster order processing,” explains Carlos de Almeida.

Meet the PowerCube.

The PowerCube was designed with one clear goal—to improve efficiency. By maximising storage density and accelerating order processing, it helps warehouses handle more goods in less space and time.

At the heart of the system is Jungheinrich’s own Warehouse Control System (WCS), which controls automated shuttles via Ethernet communication to ensure they move quickly and safely within a high-density storage grid. These shuttles operate on the entire bottom level in two dimensions, leveraging the full vertical space above the system for maximum storage capacity.

Benefits:

  • Unique use of space: Up to four times higher storage density compared to conventional shelving.
  • High system height: Vertical storage up to 12 meters.
  • Scalable design: Flexible throughput, container capacity, and shuttle count.
  • Powerful performance: Each shuttle can carry two containers at once, up to 50 kg per container.
  • Easy integration: Short assembly times and simple IT connections—no need for floor milling.

“We wanted a system that combines speed, safety, and scalability. PowerCube delivers all three,” says Carlos.

Turning to HMS Networks for Reliable Connectivity.
Keeping shuttles moving safely in two dimensions is no easy task—it demands reliable and deterministic wireless communication. Any delay or disruption stops a shuttle, blocks access to storage areas, and can halt the entire line, leading to costly delays. Cables were not an option because the shuttles need complete freedom to move across the bottom level without restrictions. Recognising the need for reliable connectivity, Jungheinrich turned to HMS Networks. As Carlos puts it, “we’re experts in logistics, not networking, so we contacted HMS for help.”

The following robust wireless setup recommended:

• Anybus Wireless Access Points installed throughout the installation for full signal coverage. Dual-band segmentation using 5 GHz for communication with tablets and maintenance devices, and 2.4 GHz for shuttle control and safety communication.
• Anybus Wireless Bridge II, with its integrated antenna and compact IP67 form factor, for a space-saving installation on each shuttle.
• Point-to-multipoint architecture allows shuttles to roam freely between APs with continuous Ethernet connectivity wherever they are in the system.
• IP67-rated hardware ensures durability in harsh environments, including cold storage where condensation is a risk.

“We really appreciated HMS’ support and guidance. The Bridges and Access Points are working well, but it wasn’t just about the products. Their Wireless & Infrastructure Implementation Assistance service made a big difference, helping us overcome the challenges of deploying wireless connectivity in a dense, metallic structure. Using their expertise and analysis tools, HMS designed the best layout for access points to ensure reliable performance in every installation. In some cases, we even asked HMS to join us at our customer’s warehouse to perform a site survey and validate signal coverage,” adds Carlos.

First field deployments. The PowerCube is now entering real-world applications, proving its efficiency and reliability in multiple installations. “It’s great to see PowerCube out in the field solving issues. Fastbolt, for example, wanted faster order processing and better space utilisation. And that’s exactly what the PowerCube is providing,” enthuses Carlos de Almeida.

With the PowerCube, Jungheinrich is setting a new benchmark for automated storage systems. And with HMS providing the wireless backbone that keeps shuttles moving, this partnership is paving the way for smarter, more efficient warehouses worldwide.

Jungheinrich has plans to scale the PowerCube to larger deployment systems with increasing storage surface and numbers of shuttles, a move that will require advanced wireless design and continuous network monitoring. At the same time, meeting cybersecurity requirements and complying with regulations such as RED, CRA, and NIS2, along with optimising safety architecture for the upcoming EU Machinery Regulations (2027), will be critical.

“We’re really pleased with the collaboration with HMS. It’s helped us achieve the required robust connectivity, and as we expand and meet cybersecurity and safety requirements, our partnership with HMS will become even more valuable. This is only the start!” concludes Carlos.

Ready for Cyber Resilience Act CRA.

An easy way for industrial manufacturers, system integrators, and factory owners to meet EU cybersecurity requirements for connected industrial products.

Under the EU Cyber Resilience Act, connectivity is no longer just a functional component of a product. It becomes a regulated part that must support long term security, secure updates, documentation, and compliance evidence throughout the product lifecycle. To address these requirements, HMS Networks has updated its Anybus Communicator portfolio with enhanced hardware and software security features developed under IEC 62443 certified secure product development processes.

“With the Cyber Resilience Act, cybersecurity becomes a purchasing requirement, not just a technical consideration,” said Fredrik Brynolf, Gateway Business Line Director at HMS Networks. “By making Anybus Communicators CRA ready, we help our customers reduce compliance effort and risk, while continuing to rely on a proven, industrial grade connectivity solutions.”

To strengthen long term security and lifecycle robustness, Anybus Communicators now include several key updates.

Hardware updates supporting long term security

Real time clock and supercapacitor - These ensure reliable timestamps for certificates, logs, and diagnostics, even during extended power off periods such as weekend shutdowns.

Dedicated security chip - Cryptographic keys and sensitive data are stored securely, enabling strong encryption and protection against tampering. Together, the real time clock with backup power and the security chip provide a stronger hardware foundation for secure operation and long term lifecycle support under CRA.

Software features aligned with CRA relevant security needs:

Secure configuration - Configuration access is protected using HTTPS, preventing man in the middle attacks during commissioning and maintenance. Certificates are user managed to support secure configuration in different environments.

Role based access control - Password protection is activated directly in the web user interface. Each device is delivered with a unique default Admin password, laser marked on the product during production and used for first time login.

Three standard roles are supported:

  • Admin – full access
  • User – slave network configuration
  • Operator – read only access

This ensures that configuration access matches operational responsibility.

Controlled updates and lifecycle protection.
The Anybus Communicator supports a controlled firmware lifecycle. On CRA ready devices with updated hardware, safeguards are in place to prevent downgrading to firmware versions released prior to the hardware update, ensuring that CRA relevant security capabilities are not removed.

Protection of intellectual property.
Machine builders and device makers can simplify configuration for end users and protect intellectual property by hiding Master configuration details.

Meeting customer requirements.

By integrating these hardware and software updates, the Anybus Communicator provides CRA ready connectivity out of the box. This helps device makers, machine builders, system integrators, and factory operators respond to growing cybersecurity, compliance, and purchasing requirements from customers.

Manufacturers and integrators can continue to rely on the Anybus Communicator for both industrial network connectivity and cybersecurity. Units in the field remain supported, while new units are delivered with CRA ready hardware and software, providing a clear, non disruptive path to meet CRA and customer cybersecurity requirements.

The company builds and maintains connectivity, security tooling, and compliance over the product lifecycle, so customers don’t have to. For many use cases, implementing an Anybus Communicator is the simplest, lowest effort way to meet CRA expectations while preserving uptime, performance, and market access.

CRA ready Anybus Communicators start shipping during spring 2026, approximately 1.5 years before the Cyber Resilience Act is enforced.

Automating the impossible anywhere!

"Industrial automation’s most versatile compensation module to the world."

At the Bosch Rexroth Customer and Innovation Center in Ulm (D), they develop innovative solutions for the future of automation, such as the Smart Flex Effector, a compensation module aiming to revolutionise the industry.

Automate the impossible.
David Lehmann, System Architect at Bosch Rexroth, explains what a compensation module is and what makes the Smart Flex Effector unique:

David Lehmann
“When you think about a robot in the factory, you usually think of a six-axis robot assembling parts or building a car, or something like that. The robots have some kind of tool at the tip, like a gripper. The compensation module is the part that goes between the robot arm and the gripper. The Smart Flex Effector stands out due to its ability to provide compliance (flexibility in response to forces) in six degrees of freedom (movement in three-dimensional space).

We can measure the deflection (change in position) of the tool with high precision with an integrated sensor system. This allows us to perform complex tasks, such as precise assembly operations, that usually only humans can do. Our slogan, ‘Automate the impossible’, sums it up nicely. Our goal with this product is to enable robots to perform new tasks that they are traditionally not good at, thereby increasing efficiency and productivity.”

Connectivity challenges.
To enable the robots to perform these new tasks, the Smart Flex Effector needs to exchange position measurement data with the robot controllers, including information about the deflection of the tool and control signals for the module's locked and unlocked states.

However, connecting the Smart Flex Effector to robot controllers was challenging, as David explains. “Our product was available, but we had difficulties installing it at our customer’s sites. When we talked to our customers, the feedback was often the same: 'You have this serial interface, but I don't want to spend two weeks or more trying to connect it with my robot controller. I do not have the time or the resources to do that.'”

Simplifying connectivity with Anybus protocol converters To solve these connectivity challenges, Bosch Rexroth turned to HMS Networks who provided the Anybus Communicator Common Ethernet, a ready-made protocol converter capable of connecting serial devices to EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or PROFINET controllers.

A key benefit of the Anybus Communicator Common Ethernet was that the same unit can connect to all the major Ethernet protocols, as David describes “This Anybus protocol converter was the ideal solution for us because we can reconfigure it with a firmware update and with just one unit, we are able to provide the connection to the different protocols.”

The Anybus Communicator’s intuitive user interface also won some new fans. “The interface is really nice. Before selling it to our customers, we tested it for ourselves in our lab where application engineers completed feasibility studies, for example. They all said that it was easy and straightforward to complete the required configurations via the web interface, which was important to us as we have customers that are not experts in automation and robotics.”

The fact that the Anybus Communicator could be installed via a web browser was a further plus point. “Both we at Bosch and our customers prefer not to install third-party configuration software. It adds security risks and complexity – just getting the required admin rights often delays installations.”

The Smart Flex Effector and Anybus Communicator have worked so well together that Bosch Rexroth includes the Anybus Communicator as part of a complete solution. “We decided to create an order number for the Anybus convertor, so that customers could buy it directly from us. So, we sell both devices together as a complete solution.”

With the addition of the Anybus Communicator, Bosch Rexroth can easily connect to all the major Industrial Ethernet protocols, and as a result have significantly expanded its market. "Now we really can address more or less the whole market”, David concludes. “We can cover everything; we haven't found a robot with a fieldbus connection that is not supported by this Anybus convertor yet."

Functional safety over EtherCAT.

A new version of the HMS Network Ixxat SafeT100 module allows users to implement safe I/Os for FSoE – Functional Safety over EtherCAT. Previously available for PROFIsafe and CIP Safety, the new version supports Functional Safety over EtherCAT according to ETG 5100 V1.2.0.

Ixxat® Safe T100 is an all-in-one safety solution which allows device manufacturers and machine builders to implement configurable, safe inputs and outputs in applications up to SIL 3 and PLe Cat.4.

The Safe T100 is designed to work hand in hand with Anybus® CompactCom, also from HMS Networks. While Anybus CompactCom handles the standard non-safe communication with the EtherCAT network, the Safe T100 handles the safe communication, in this case over FSoE. Thanks to the full implementation of the safe protocol and application layer in Ixxat Safe T100, device manufacturers and machine builders get a fast track to add functional safety capabilities to their equipment. A typical application for Ixxat Safe T100 is a safe emergency stop function for automation equipment such as drives, robots or process controllers.

Pre-certified and conformance tested solution.
The Ixxat Safe T100 solution is pre-certified by TÜV Rheinland, and its conformity to the FSoE standard ETG 5100 V1.2.0 has been confirmed in the ETG test lab. This enables users to benefit from significantly reduced development time, cost, and risk when realizing safe devices and systems.

Since the Ixxat T100 works together with Anybus CompactCom, the end user will benefit from a device or machine that provides both safe and non-safe functions via just one communication interface. This significantly simplifies configuration and project planning of the overall industrial automation system.

Key technical highlights.
The Ixxat Safe T100 module features three two-channel inputs which can detect external wiring errors, and one two-channel output. The inputs and outputs all operate with 24 V signals.
All service and process data interfaces required for FSoE in the EtherCAT layer are available in the Anybus CompactCom module, such as control of the network and status LED, or transmission of the safe configuration data.
As an additional safety feature, the interface between the Anybus CompactCom module and the Ixxat Safe T100/FSoE is galvanically isolated. Other internal safety features include integrated temperature monitoring and shutdown to a safe state as well as channel-granular error signaling and error handling.

A scalable concept for FSoE, PROFIsafe and CIP Safety.
The internal communication between the non-safe Anybus CompactCom and the safe Ixxat Safe T100 module is done according to the "black-channel" principle. Thanks to this clean separation between the safe and non-safe communication layers, it is possible for customers to support all the three major safety protocols – FSoE, PROFIsafe and CIP Safety – with just one hardware design, adding further to the scalability and efficiency of the solution.

Customized implementation or OEM solutions.
Thanks to the comprehensive implementation guidelines and user documentation, the Safe T100 module can be implemented by device manufacturers and machine builders themselves. However, HMS also supports customers with implementation services, as well as porting and certification services.

For specific requirements regarding e.g., form factor, plugs or number of I/Os, customer-specific versions of the Ixxat Safe T100 can be developed by HMS.

For applications where it is not possible to integrate the Safe T100 – e.g. due to limited space within safety encoders, or when already existing safety hardware limits the design flexibility – HMS also offers protocol stacks for Functional Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE), CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP and CIP Safety over Sercos, all pre-certified by TÜV.

Positioning for a beautiful friendship.

When BTG needed their IRM400 range of positioning measurement systems to send real-time data over different industrial networks, they found Anybus from HMS Networks. And that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

The drive to increase the efficiency of international shipping relies on high-performance cranes to transfer containerized cargo quickly and safely from ship to shore. BTG specializes in developing, producing, and installing positioning measurement systems for automated container ports. Much of the company's work is based on providing sensors to enable cranes to move cargo from ships to automated guided vehicles (AGVs). But the networking is complex and demanding. The cranes and AGVs often use different industrial networks, yet they need to transfer real-time data in harsh environments. That’s where Anybus steps in. Anybus takes care of the networking allowing BTG to focus on the position measurement systems, and together they help to increase the efficiency in automated container ports.

BTG is a Dutch company specializing in position measurement systems used in all types of cranes and vehicles in automated container terminals. BTG has over 25 years of experience and has products in all the main automated container ports around the world. One of BTG’s key products is the IRM400 range of measurement systems. It is designed to control sway, skew, and inclination and thereby provide accurate position control of the crane’s spreaders and their precious cargo.

Designed as a series of modular elements, the IRM can be configured for many different types and sizes of cranes. The system consists of an infrared transmitter and a high-resolution receiver unit. The transmitter is mounted on the spreader of the crane, and the receiver is mounted perpendicular above the transmitter. The system constantly measures the sway angle of the load in flight in all directions. It also measures the spreader skew angle and optionally the trim and list angle.

To achieve this level of dynamic control of multi-ton loads traveling in three dimensions at high speed, data must be collected from several sources in real-time and processed instantly so that the exact position and velocity are always known and can be adjusted.

“We have a lot of experience and knowledge with position measurement systems in tough industrial environments, but we are not experts in industrial networks,” explains Daan Potters, chief operating officer at BTG. “That’s why we turned to Anybus.”

Networking Requirements.
BTG required a networking technology that could be embedded into the IRM sensor, allowing the sensor to communicate over PROFIBUS, PROFINET, and CANopen networks. As BTG is a global company and different networks are dominant in different parts of the world, BTG also needed the possibility to easily cover more networks in the future. The networking solution also needed to be compatible with legacy equipment, tough enough to handle marine environments, and fast enough to process real-time data communication.

The Anybus CompactCom!
Anybus from HMS Networks is a product brand specializing in connecting industrial devices to any major industrial network. There’s a CompactCom product for the integration of any major Fieldbus or industrial Ethernet network, including PROFIBUS, PROFINET, and CANopen networks.

Embedded Design.
The CompactCom is embedded into the relevant device, in this example the sensor’s receiver. The embedded design brings several benefits. It’s simple to install and therefore reduces the time to market for new products. It’s possible to reuse legacy equipment, enabling BTG to retrofit new electronic control systems to existing cranes. The CompactCom can be embedded in an IP67-rated enclosure, ensuring that the equipment can handle the harsh conditions found in marine environments.

Real-Time Communication.
The Anybus CompactCom provides high-performance data exchange that can handle even the most demanding synchronized motion applications - up to 1448 bytes of process data in each direction.

“We chose the CompactCom B40, and we’re pleased we did”, concludes Daan Potters. “The CompactCom B40 solved all our networking needs, it’s compatible with all the required networks, and it provides real-time communication, which is essential in position measurement systems. Anybus also provided excellent support to help us to implement the CompactCom B40 as quickly as possible”.

Robotics need industrial networks.

Robots need accessories to work efficiently. But what’s the easiest way to connect the accessories to factory networks?

The number of industrial robots operating in factories worldwide continues to rise. To use robots efficiently and maximize productivity, companies attach robot accessories to the robots to enable the robots to perform different tasks.

RSP (Robot System Products) specializes in developing, producing, and installing the required robot accessories. When theystarted to develop a new range of tool changers, they needed to meet their customers’ expectations and provide a tool changer capable of connecting to the factory networks. However, developing the required networking technology is a complicated task outside RSP’s expertise. Anybus solutions from HMS provided the solution. HMS helped embed an Anybus communication interface into the tool changer enabling connectivity with the factory’s network and allowing RSP to remain focused on making world-leading robot accessories.

The Moduflex tool changer is attached to the
robot so the robot to changes tools quickly & safely.
(RSP) specialize in making industrial robot accessories that are used in factories worldwide. “Our strength lies in the specialized knowledge gained from working with industrial robotics for almost 20 years,” explains Henrik Hofström, marketing manager at RSP. “This specialized knowledge enables us to make robust, versatile industrial robot accessories that help our customers improve robot flexibility and increase productivity.”

Challenge.
The requirements for a smart and connected industry affect every step in the automation process. So, when RSP was developing its Moduflex series, a new line of tool changers specially designed to carry heavy payloads, they needed to move with the times and provide a modern tool changer that could connect to automation networks. However, developing the required networking technology is neither easy nor what has made RSP a global leader. “We’re experts in robotics, not industrial networking,” explains Mats Thunell, senior engineer at RSP. “We want to remain focused on robotics, so we didn’t want to invest the time and money to develop an in-house networking solution as that’s outside our area of expertise. Fortunately, we found a good solution with Anybus that allows both companies to focus on what they’re good at, Robotics for us and networking for Anybus.”

RSP’s networking requirements: Robots move freely within the factory, so robot accessories must be as compact and cable-free as possible. To maintain the tool changer’s compact form, RSP preferred to embed the networking technology within the tool changer. RSP also needed a data communication interface that allowed easy and reliable connectivity to any factory system, regardless of the network protocol.

The Anybus CompactCom matched all the networking requirements.

To maintain the tool changer’s compact size and avoid extra cables, RSP chose the Anybus CompactCom B40. The Anybus CompactCom B40 was attached to the tool changer’s printed circuit board (PCB).

There’s a CompactCom for any major Fieldbus or industrial Ethernet, and it’s easy to swap one CompactCom for another CompactCom, enabling RSP to connect to any factory system, regardless of the network protocol. As Henrik observes, this opens the possibility of expanding into new markets. “We’ve started with PROFINET, but we can target new markets as there’s an Anybus CompactCom for all major networks.”

Anybus CompactCom is ready-made and easy to install, reducing the time to market for new products. The award-winning Anybus NP40 industrial network processor ensures that the CompactCom meets demanding performance, reliability, and security requirements. “We would not have been able to develop the Moduflex series this easily without the Anybus CompactCom,” concludes Henrik. “The Anybus CompactCom is a great product. It provides reliable industrial network communication and is easy to use.”

Only a joystick required!

Lifting a steel beam, moving a container or controlling a crane does not require much raw strength nowadays. On the contrary, what is required is dexterity and a joystick. Kristianstads Lyftdon AB in Sweden has long experience of producing ergonomic solutions for the operator cabins from which you control cranes and industrial operations. With the help of HMS Anybus technology, their new joystick can be used in industrial applications using PROFINET.

Kristianstads Lyftdon AB, or KLAB, are experts in ergonomic lifting and driver’s chairs for industrial use. They develop and build operator cabins for larger cranes used in the steel industry, heating plants, waste-handling stations, etc. With a focus on ergonomics, they produce everything needed inside an operator’s cabin — the most important operational part being the steering device itself, the joystick, which the operator uses to control the machine.

“We have been making joysticks since the start in 1978 and have a good idea of what the industry needs,” says Sven Holmer, owner and chairman of KLAB. And continues “When we designed our latest joystick, we wanted to provide it with bus communication. Previously, these solutions have often been hard-wired. As the industry is increasingly moving towards Ethernet communication and several of our major customers are in central Europe, PROFINET was the network we mainly wanted the joystick to communicate on. ”

Any network
KLAB’s technology partner recommended them to use Anybus CompactCom from HMS to enable the joystick to communicate on PROFINET. Just as the name suggests, Anybus allows the joystick to communicate on any network — fieldbus or industrial Ethernet. You can easily switch to another Anybus CompactCom and thus communicate on other networks such as EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus-TCP or CC-Link IE Field. This opens up opportunities to sell the joystick in new markets, in other parts of the world.

“We start with PROFINET,” says Sven Holmer at KLAB, “but of course we also see new opportunities now that the joysitick can communicate on other industrial networks in other markets.“

Any form factor
Anybus CompactCom is also flexible in terms of form factor. Users can choose to integrate a chip that contains all the necessary software, or a so-called Brick including hardware and software for PCB mounting. A third alternative is a complete CompactCom Module which is simply plugged into the end product.

KLAB chose the Brick solution — Anybus CompactCom B40 — which suited the joystick well in terms of size, functionality and price.

Embedded web server makes data available
Another major advantage of the Anybus solution is that it has a built-in web server that allows KLAB to store data from the joystick — both for control and analysis. This means that KLAB and their customers can gain important insight into how the joystick is used by operators. This opens opportunities to refine and improve the product for different applications. The web server also makes it possible to access and configure the solution from anywhere.

Sven Holmer describes the implementation of Anybus technology as relatively easy — From idea to finished and working product in about a year. “We could definitely have done it faster, but we have a lot to do and development projects like this often have to wait a bit,” says Sven Holmer. “However, we have not encountered any major problems and with good support from HMS, the communication solution came into place smoothly.”

CAN communication via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Since its launch five years ago, the Anybus® Wireless Bolt™ has provided thousands of industrial applications with wireless Ethernet access. With a rugged and unique form factor for bolt-on-machine mounting, it is today proven and trusted in the most demanding industrial applications. Use cases vary from warehouse installations and AGVs to manufacturing of food, underground mining or rough outdoor applications. Building on the success, HMS now launches the Anybus Wireless Bolt CAN, featuring CAN-based communication to the host equipment.
The new Anybus Wireless Bolt for CAN enables CAN-based, heavy-duty machinery and applications to transfer CAN data over a robust wireless link. Wireless communication is established either over a fast Wi-Fi connection or a reliable Bluetooth link. The CAN data is transported over a TCP/IP link which enables other standard Wi-Fi infrastructure to also connect to the wireless link if desired.

A typical use case is wireless access to CAN data from an industrial vehicle, such as a bulk material transport truck. For example, with the Anybus Wireless Bolt CAN, J1939 CAN data is easily communicated to a handheld tablet which gives the operator full control and visibility of the ongoing bulk material filling process.

Anybus Wireless Bolt CAN is fully transparent when it comes to transporting CAN data, meaning that it works with any CAN-based protocol, including CANopen. This opens the possibility to create mobile automation islands in any manufacturing process – the Anybus Wireless Bolt CAN will bridge the CANopen line wirelessly.

A wide range of wireless connectivity options for industrial networks and IoT applications In addition to the new Anybus Wireless Bolt CAN, the Wireless Bolt product family includes other versions which can connect to the host equipment using serial and industrial Ethernet connectivity. On the wireless side of the Wireless Bolt, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options were recently complemented with a version that supports the new LTE standards NB-IoT and CAT-M1, targeting IoT applications.
