Turbomachinery protection and monitoring enhanced.

Improved insights support safer operations and better asset health through advanced trending and real-time visibility.

Emerson's AMS 6500 ATG online protection system with embedded prediction and their AMS Machine Works asset health monitoring software have been updated. New features in both systems have been designed in parallel to drive improved analytics for critical turbomachinery – particularly to support complex, high-stakes activities such as machinery start-ups and shutdowns.

Protection systems are critical to safe turbomachinery operations, but historically, data collection from the most effective systems was typically limited to minutes of operation. Also, the higher the quality of data collected, the more limited the collection window. Yet, turbomachinery start-ups or shutdowns can take hours or even days, and operators and analysts need longer information timelines to better understand what is happening during these complex operations.

New programmable dashboards and simplified connectivity improve usability and cybersecurity for critical machinery environments.

The AMS 6500 ATG version 5.0 and the AMS Machine Works version 2.4 software have been updated to support continuous, unlimited machine data transmission from the protection system into the analytics platform, helping operators better understand what is happening during complex activities while enabling analysts to perform more comprehensive analysis and long-term trending in AMS Machine Works.

“In complex operations, operators and technicians need precise operational insight, such as the ability to see when machinery reaches its natural frequency so they can improve control speeds,” said Ben Swisher, vice president and general manager of reliability solutions at Emerson. “With continuous data streaming from the AMS 6500 ATG to AMS Machine Works, operators, maintenance personnel and analysts all have the inputs they need for enhanced insight into safe operations and long-term asset health.”

The latest enhancements to the AMS 6500 ATG and the AMS Machine Works software provide users with greater visibility into how their assets and operations are changing. With access to longer and more frequent data, analysts can use AMS Machine Works to more effectively trend streamed information for the AMS 6500 ATG and data from other sources, and those trends can be tied directly to alarms. Operators can also see live data illustrating what is happening in machines connected to the system.

The AMS 6500 ATG has also been updated with a web-server-based programmable dashboard to provide visualisation of critical turbomachinery performance. The system can show up to five programmable dashboard pages, each with up to 25 widgets, including trending, Boolean alarm value screens and live measurement fields. New widgets can also display machine components in addition to data points to make it easier for operators to connect those points to the relevant machines and gain a general understanding about the health of assets from a single view. The dashboard is available natively via a web browser and is flexible and programmable.

The enhancements to AMS 6500 ATG and AMS Machine Works software also deliver Modbus-independent connectivity for simplified management and continue Emerson’s commitment to ongoing cybersecurity improvements.

Functional safety for mobile machines.

The Anybus Safe2Link Remote IO-CS, from HMS Networks, is a rugged, type-approved I/O device designed to simplify the integration of functional safety into AGVs, AMRs, and other mobile machines. With TÜV-certified safety functions and support for CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP, the Anybus Safe2Link Remote IO-CS provides the fastest, most reliable path to compliance with ISO 3691-4 and the upcoming EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230.

The unit mounts directly on the machine, enabling system integrators and machine builders to add a safe remote stop and manage local or remote safety signals without custom hardware design.

Since the Anybus Safe2Link Remote IO-CS connects with existing local safety logic, system integrators can implement the same safety functions across AGV/AMR platforms from different suppliers. This significantly simplifies integration and reduces the effort required for the recertification of functions such as safe remote stop.

Advanced safety features such as SafeBound™ (fast local and slow remote safe reaction) and SS1-t (controlled safe stop) allow machines to react predictably, protecting both people and equipment.

With certification up to SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and PLe/Cat. 4 (ISO 13849-1), the Safe2Link Remote IO-CS is type-approved and ready to deploy. Its rugged IP54 enclosure, dual M12 Ethernet connectors, and straightforward D-Sub I/O interface make it well-suited for harsh industrial environments.

The launch of the Anybus Safe2Link Remote IO-CS expands HMS Networks’ functional safety portfolio, which also includes embedded hardware options and TÜV-certified safety protocol software. This flexible approach allows OEMs and system integrators to choose the right level of integration for their applications — from plug-and-play devices to fully customized safety hardware.

“Functional safety is no longer optional — it’s essential for accessing global markets and building trust with customers,” says Stefan Kraus, Functional Safety Product Manager at HMS Networks. “The Anybus Safe2Link Remote IO-CS gives system integrators or machine builders a plug-and-play solution to meet the latest requirements with minimal integration effort. This means faster time-to-market and safer, smarter machines.”

System integrator acquired.

Safety-related automation solutions specialists, the HIMA Group, has acquired the British system integrator Sella Controls. Representatives of both companies signed an agreement recently in Manchester (GB). Both companies intend to continue their growth strategies and expand their range of solutions for railway technology and the process industry following this agreement.

"HIMA has had a long-standing and close relationship with Sella Controls and shares the same vision and values. With Sella Controls the HIMA Group will accelerate its international expansion and strengthen its global competitiveness," said Steffen Philipp, Shareholder HIMA Group.

HIMA and Sella Controls will maintain their focus on safety-related automation, control solutions and the digitalisation of functional safety. "The acquisition of Sella Controls is an important milestone in our HIMA growth strategy. By joining our forces we will enhance our global position as a leading supplier for safety-related automation solutions for the process and rail industries", stated Jörg de la Motte, CEO HIMA Group.

Sella Controls is in a leading market position in Britain and Ireland. In particular, Sella Controls' expertise and portfolio of solutions in the rail sector is an excellent addition for HIMA, which intends to push ahead and market internationally. Business in the process industry is also to be further expanded in these countries. One focus here is the digitalisation of functional safety, which HIMA is pushing under the motto "Safety goes digital".

HIMA's existing customers will benefit from even more intensive support as a result of the acquisition, while Sella Controls' customers will benefit from a larger service portfolio.

HIMA will ensure continuity of the management: John Blackwell (CFO) and Eddy Turnock (CSO), both previous owners, will continue to lead Sella Controls. In addition, Chris Parr, who previously led the Process Division at Sella Controls, will join the Management Board as CTO.

Sella Controls' 118 employees will be retained and additional hires are planned. The three locations will also be retained. Sella Controls has two divisions: the "Centre of Excellence Rail Solutions" with locations in Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Coalville, near Leicester, and the "Process Solutions" division, which is based in Stockport near Manchester. The company will continue to trade under the name "Sella Controls" with the addition of "A HIMA Company".

"It’s a Win-Win-Situation for HIMA and Sella Controls, with multiple synergies: HIMA will benefit from the long-term experience of Sella Controls in the development of solutions for the rail industry and we at Sella Controls will be able to utilize HIMA’s global sales and service to boost our international business," said Eddy Turnock, CSO Sella Controls.

"As a family-owned company, the HIMA Group is long-term oriented and stands for customer orientation, sustainable growth and people-focus. That’s why HIMA is offering great opportunities for further development of the Sella Controls team," added John Blackwell, CFO Sella Controls.

"The investment in Sella Controls is a clear signal that growth by acquisition is an important element of the HIMA growth strategy," said Dr. Michael Löbig, CFO HIMA Group.
