Secure routers and gateways.

Contemporary Controls has expanded its line of BACnet routers and gateways to incorporate HTTPS to provide secure Internet communication and protect the integrity of client data. Their resident HTTPS web servers allow for commissioning, status reporting, and troubleshooting using any standard web browser.

With the integration of building management system (BMS) networks within an IT infrastructure, BMS devices must manage a lot more traffic. Each device uses a more powerful processor to accommodate this increased traffic volume. Both models have an opto-isolated EIA-485 port with switchable DIP switches for bias and termination.

The BASrouterSX is a high-performance BACnet router that provides stand-alone routing between BACnet networks such as BACnet/IP, BACnet Ethernet (ISO 8802-3), and BACnet MS/TP. This multi-network router features an MS/TP status webpage with a graphical network map that provides real-time status of all BACnet MS/TP devices on the network. It has advanced features, such as MS/TP slave proxy support with auto-discovery and diagnostic MS/TP frame capture for Wireshark® analysis.

The BASgatewaySX Modbus to BACnet Gateway provides gateway functionality between Modbus Serial (RTU or ASCII), Modbus TCP and BACnet/IP. The gateway supports up to 200 devices and 2000 mapped points and features virtual routing that allows each connected Modbus device to appear as an individual BACnet-compliant device. Using HTTPS webpages and a resident database of common Modbus device profiles, Modbus data points from Modbus Serial or Modbus TCP devices can be mapped to BACnet objects.

Uninterrupted telecommunications for Galápagos.

The Galápagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago, roughly 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador, in the Pacific Ocean. As a province of Ecuador, mobile network operators (MNO) from the mainland are obligated to provide cellular services on the islands. This supports both the 30,000 permanent residents and close to 300,000 tourists that visit the islands each year. Connectivity is provided by several MNOs and internet service providers. However, the only connection back to the mainland is via satellite.

To maintain uninterrupted services in accordance to stringent regulatory conditions, remote monitoring solutions and access to equipment at various sites across the islands are essential. To support a satellite operator-managed service to one of its MNO customers, telecommunications consultant Specialized RF, developed an out-of-band remote access solution for the monitoring and control of critical equipment. The solution utilises Westermo industrial cellular gateways and easy-to-use remote access management platform WeConnect, which enables secure remote connections to applications on the network edge.

“I needed a way to establish secure remote access, for my clients, to the equipment deployed on the islands, because typically it takes hours for human resources to travel to these sites,” said Jens Langenhorst, consultant and owner of Specialized RF. “After researching various options, Throughput Technologies, the Westermo distributor in South Africa, introduced me to the Westermo cellular gateways.”

Deployment of the remote monitoring solutions are at cellular tower sites located across the islands. These applications had specific criteria and limitations to work within. For example, the available power source at the sites is only 48V DC. Furthermore, to provide redundant connectivity, a dual SIM gateway with external antennas that can be positioned outside of the typical metal racks or shelters was needed. The Westermo industrial cellular gateways were ideally suited for these applications, providing the required functionality and designed to withstand the environmental demands ensuring reliability and a long lifecycle.

“The selling point for me was the WeConnect secure VPN service. Not only was it easy to set up and configure, but it was already integrated into the Westermo cellular gateway. My satellite clients employ specialists around the globe and using WeConnect they can access and recover any issue remotely, within minutes. Furthermore, this solution now unlocks a much wider set of available global skills that can assist anytime, anywhere. In turn, simply put, it results in improved cellular services and uptime in the Galapagos Islands,” explained Langenhorst.

IIoT gateways.

Remote industrial sites need to be monitored in real time using data from multiple sensors that measure parameters such as temperature, fluid levels, and gas concentrations. This data is then transferred to a cloud platform via IIoT gateways for monitoring. Because of the mission-critical role gateways play in the process, operators need to choose rugged models that ensure continuous connectivity from the edge to the cloud, and ones able to be remotely upgraded and managed for minimal system downtime.

Moxa AIG-300 Series IIoT gateways, with robust hardware design and rich software functions, are ideal for use in distributed and unmanned sites in harsh operating environments where they help in reducing unplanned downtime. The gateways come equipped with the powerful Arm® Cortex-A7 dual-core 1 GHz processor featuring 2GB DRAM, along with the flexibility of one CAN 2.0 port, four Digital Inputs, four Digital Outputs, two RJ45 Ethernet ports, two serial ports, and a USB 2.0 port, along with connectors for Wi-Fi, LTE Cellular and GPS.

Most IIoT gateways are installed in remote, unmanned sites where they are subjected to harsh environmental conditions and exposed to potentially flammable liquids and vapors. That is why Moxa AIG-300 Series IIoT gateways are housed in a rugged metal DIN-rail case that is IP30 rated and able to withstand operating temperatures from -20° to 70° C (-4° to 158° F). Upmost reliability is further ensured through the gateway's resistance to damaging shock, vibration, humidity, and EMC. The gateways are Class I Division 2 and ATEX certified for deployment in hazardous locations, such as remote oil and gas fields, petrochemical processing plants, and wastewater treatment centers.

Moxa ThingsPro Edge and Azure IoT Edge software comes preloaded on AIG-300 Series IIoT gateways, enabling reliable, yet secure sensor-to-cloud connectivity for data acquisition and device management using the Microsoft Azure Cloud solution. Since it is critical that IIoT gateways do not disconnect while a remote upgrade or patch application is in progress, AIG-300 Series IIoT gateways feature a robust software OTA function. During an unexpected disconnection, ThingsPro Edge will automatically switch between the transmission interfaces, Wi-Fi, LTE, and Ethernet, to ensure uninterrupted data transmission.

Gateway that enables easy and fast integration.

HMS Networks announces a new compact Intesis™ Modbus RTU to KNX gateway that enables easy and fast integration of Modbus RTU slaves to KNX. Fully configurable using the standard ETS tool, it targets small-scale room control applications with up to 100 data points.

Room automation projects in commercial applications such as hotels or office buildings are often of small scale, only requiring a limited number of signals from HVAC and metering devices to be integrated into a KNX system. Here, integrators are often faced with connecting rooftop units, fan coils, or meters, but these typically come with Modbus RTU slave connectivity as standard.

Addressing this situation, the new Intesis Modbus RTU to KNX gateway is a cost-effective protocol converter that supports up to 100 data points. Easy to install with a compact form factor, the gateway features Modbus RTU master functionality for seamless integration of any Modbus RTU slave to KNX. With separate interfaces for KNX TP and serial Modbus RTU (RS485) respectively, it enables bidirectional data monitoring and control of the integrated data. Power is supplied by the KNX bus.

The Modbus RTU to KNX gateway can be configured with the ETS tool which makes configuration easy and seamless for the many KNX professionals who are using the ETS tool daily in their KNX projects. Users also benefit from the fact that the product database can be directly downloaded from the ETS catalog and imported into the integration project.

Thanks to the KNX connectivity offered with the Intesis gateway, manufacturers now have an opportunity to offer their Modbus-enabled HVAC and metering devices to the KNX market by using the Modbus RTU to KNX gateway as their standard KNX interface. To facilitate integration to KNX, the gateway allows manufacturers to create pre-defined templates that match the Modbus register maps of their devices. With this, KNX integrators can integrate Modbus RTU slaves such as HVAC or metering devices into the KNX network very quickly, while maintaining full data control.

The gateway extends the comprehensive range of already existing Intesis KNX protocol translators and has been certified by the KNX Association in order to guarantee the highest quality standards.

Advanced connectivity with maximum security.

Ixxat SG-gateways enable data exchange between IEC61850 or IEC60870-5-104 based energy networks and common fieldbus and Industrial Ethernet systems. HMS Networks now introduces new functions, including Mediabreaker functionality and support for IEC60870-5-101, DNP3, OPC-UA and MQTT. The user management has also been improved and a version with Ethernet switch is available.
The energy sector is developing fast, driven by the transformation to renewable energies, electromobility and the move from pure energy consumers to prosumers (producer and consumer). The changes result in high demands on communication within the energy distribution networks. Highly flexible and secure solutions are required to adapt the existing infrastructure to the new conditions, including mitigation of the increasing risk of cyber-attacks. The new, extended Ixxat® SG-gateways from HMS meet both the need for more flexibility and for more security.

Media break in line with TSO security requirements
Ixxat SG-gateways already support secure data transmission via VPN and the IEC60870-5-104 protocol. However, according to the TSO (Transmission System Operators) specifications, the transmission medium must also be changed to add a further security layer and thus prevent malicious code from being passed on to the terminal device. The integration of the IEC60870-5-101 protocol enables the user to connect his 101-compatible devices to the control rooms of the respective operators in accordance with the TSO specifications. Ixxat SG-gateways enable the easy "break" between Ethernet-based (IEC60870-5-104) and serial (IEC60870-5-101) communication. With only one Ethernet port and one serial interface, the specific MediaBreaker version is optimally adapted to this application.

Due to the media break integration, the IEC60870-5-101 protocol is now also available via the serial interface. This enables connection of old devices to modern control rooms and controllers without having to replace them by new ones.

Ready for the future with OPC-UA and MQTT

Ixxat SG-gateways now also offer functions for data aggregation and simple controlling tasks. Thanks to the new support for the popular OPC-UA and MQTT standards, SG-gateways can be used to feed data from various energy and industrial networks to established services from Microsoft, Google and other providers, where the data can be evaluated and reacted upon via a secure bidirectional connection. OPC-UA and MQTT are now available for all SG-gateway versions at no extra cost.

Integrated Ethernet switch

With the new SG-gateway switch version, it is possible to connect up to 4 devices directly to a second Ethernet port and to distribute the communication (i.e. energy protocols, OPC-UA, MQTT or Modbus-TCP) in a flexible way over two separate networks. This eliminates the need for external switches.

Prepared for easy worldwide use

The SG-gateways now also support the DNP3 protocol which is widely used by companies in the energy sector in Britain, Australia, the USA and other countries. Furthermore, users can also benefit from an updated user interface for even easier configuration and management of connected devices.

New ways to interconnect the PROFI-world.

Automation engineers frequently need to bridge the gap between different protocols and networks used in a plant, but they also need to enable communication between equipment within the same network family. For example, in the PROFINET and PROFIBUS-world, there are many devices and sub-systems that cannot necessarily communicate with each other. It may be necessary to connect different physical formats such as copper and fiber optics or couple/de-couple I/O data between two controlling networks. With their recently upgraded Anybus X-gateways, HMS Industrial Networks can offer ways to get heterogeneous PROFI-equipment connected.

"According to our latest market research, PROFINET and PROFIBUS are two of the most dominant networks on the global market today," says Markus Bladh, Product Manager for gateways at HMS Industrial Networks. "So naturally, we get a lot of requests for connectivity to the PROFI-world, but we also get requests for connectivity within these networks. Although our Anybus gateways are mostly known for interconnecting all types of networks, it is really interesting to see the attention Anybus X-gateways get as a cost-efficient way to connect different physical formats and standards within the PROFI-world. This enables system integrators and factory owners to connect otherwise incompatible devices and systems."

Here are a few examples of how Anybus gateways can solve connectivity issues within PROFINET and PROFIBUS.

1. Coupling a PROFINET IRT machine with a controlling PLC
Many factories need to couple or de-couple I/O data between two controlling PROFINET IRT networks - for example between two segments in a factory. The Anybus X-gateway can act as a PROFINET/PROFINET coupler enabling fast transfer of I/O data. The PROFINET interface works as an I/O-Device on the PROFINET I/O or IRT network.

2. Coupling PROFIBUS networks
Coupling or de-coupling of I/O data between two controlling PROFIBUS networks are other common tasks for the Anybus X-gateway. This functionality is often called DP/DP coupling. The two PROFIBUS networks become galvanically and logically isolated from each other.

3. Coupling PROFINET I/O networks
It is also possible to couple or de-couple I/O data between two controlling PROFINET I/O networks. A well-known name for this functionality is PN/PN coupling.

4. Connecting a fiber optic network to a copper network
PROFINET FO is especially popular in the German automotive industry. However, many machines and systems do not come with fiber optic connectivity. Anybus X-gateway can act as a coupler between the two network versions, enabling them to communicate.

5. Migration from PROFIBUS to PROFINET
Many factories have well-functioning PROFIBUS networks, either as their main factory network or as subsystems within the factory. However, there is often a need to install devices or systems which run PROFINET. With an Anybus X-gateway, this switch is easily done. The X-gateway acts as translator between the two networks and can be installed within minutes - a very fast way to migrate from fieldbus to industrial Ethernet. End users will be able to reuse and connect well-working existing equipment to new high-performing automation systems.

"We see both fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet networks increasing at the moment," says Markus Bladh. "Trends such as the Industrial Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 require more and more industrial machines to become networked and this also requires more connectivity within the different network worlds. With the Anybus X-gateway product range, HMS offers an easy and cost-effective way to get connectivity between different devices and networks within the PROFI-world."

Communications improved with five new gateways.

PROFINET is used worldwide in a variety of high-speed applications, including robotics and stamping, bottling, high-speed conveying and paper press. As the standard Ethernet protocol for Siemens® and new GE PACs, it’s used in industries around the globe.

Now, ProSoft Technology is helping users connect PROFINET controllers and Modbus or EtherNet/IP devices with five new gateways.

If you have Modbus equipment on several networks, our PROFINET Device to Modbus Serial Gateway with four Serial ports can help. Want to avoid changing IP addresses to have your OEM machine communicate with your PLC? The Modbus® TCP/IP to PROFINET Device Gateway allows users to do just that by communicating with devices that are on two different subnets. If you need to connect to a single serial network, the Modbus Serial to PROFINET Device Gateway is the answer. If your devices are all on the same subnet, our Modbus TCP/IP to PROFINET Device Gateway is ideal.

These gateways join their PLX30 family of gateways, which also includes the EtherNet/IP™ to PROFINET Device Gateway. That gateway can be used in a variety of applications, including those involving PLC-to-PLC interlocking, a SCADA interface or data concentration. The EtherNet/IP™ driver supports multiple I/O connections offering you fast, consistent data delivery and the ability to prioritize data transfers by setting different update rates for control and diagnostic data. This allows you to send low-priority data at slower rates.

All five gateways enable high-speed bi-directional data transfers, supporting 1440 bytes in and 1440 bytes out. Those gateways are available as masters or slaves and support up to 100 commands. The serial gateways also feature a built-in Data Analyzer, allowing for improved troubleshooting. The gateways support up to 10 clients and 10 servers. The gateways can be used in temperatures ranging from -25°C to 70°C. The gateways support disaster recovery through an SD card, allowing for configuration recovery if an issue arises.

Gateway solutions for EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP/IP network.

The PLX30 Ethernet and Serial Gateways from ProSoft Technology, are powerful and cost-effective solutions for connecting end devices to an EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP/IP network.

These gateways offer real-time, bi-directional data transfers between devices on dissimilar networks.

They are stand-alone, DIN-rail mounted gateways that provide one Ethernet port for communication, remote configuration and diagnostics and up to four isolated serial ports. The PLX30 gateways also come with an SD Card slot for storing configuration files. In the event of a failure, the SD card can be transferred to another gateway reducing downtime.

Each gateway delivers fast real-time data acquisition; flexible communication methods; disaster recovery support; remote configuration and diagnostics as well as a wide input power and extended temperature range.

Each EtherNet/IP gateway features multiple I/O connections; client and/or Server capability; a 4,000 word database; CIP and PCCC Messaging; Add-On-Profiles for RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000 v. 20 and above. The multiple I/O connections allow for fast communications between devices such as HMIs, SCADA Systems, Power Monitors and Flow Computers. The gateway can be setup to send and receive data to or from and PLC-5, SLC, HMI or any other device communicating via CIPP based messaging.

Each Modbus TCP/IP gateway features up to 10 Client and 10 Server connections; a 4,000 word database and 160 fully configurable commands.
