Non-contacting radar transmitters.

Improve Efficiency in Water, Wastewater and Process Industry Utility Applications.

The newly introduced Rosemount™ 1208 Level and Flow Transmitter Series non-contacting radar transmitters will help increase the operational efficiency of water, wastewater and process industry utility applications. The performance of the 1208 Series surpasses that of ultrasonic and hydrostatic devices by delivering reliable and accurate level and open channel flow measurements, enabling organisations to increase the efficiency of their operations and achieve environmental compliance.

“Improved monitoring within water, wastewater and process industry utility applications is essential to help optimise processes and create operational efficiency improvements,” said Felix Johansson, associate solutions manager for Emerson’s radar level business. “Emerson’s advanced radar technology is simple to order, install, operate and maintain. Designed specifically for these applications, it provides a step-change increase in measurement performance and process visibility to help operators maximise the potential of their plant.”

Operators in the water and wastewater, food and beverage, chemical and other process industries often deploy ultrasonic and hydrostatic devices for water monitoring applications when radar transmitters are considered too expensive, bulky or complex. The Rosemount 1208 is a new alternative, featuring 80 GHz fast-sweep frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology on a single electronic chip, which delivers accurate and reliable measurement within a compact and cost-effective device ideal for applications with space constraints or compliance requirements, such as water applications.

Unlike ultrasonic and hydrostatic devices, the measurement accuracy and reliability of the Rosemount 1208 line is unaffected by most process conditions, including condensation and variations in pressure, temperature and density. By using fast-sweep FMCW technology and advanced algorithms, the new transmitter family can collect up to 40 times more information than legacy radar devices. This provides level measurement accuracy of ± 0.08” (2 mm) at a range of 49 ft (15 m), helping organisations optimise processes and comply with environmental requirements. In addition, the non-contacting design has no moving parts or calibration requirements, creating a virtually maintenance-free device that minimises manual procedures and delivers long-term performance and reliability.

The transmitter is available in two models, offering different communication protocols and approvals. The Rosemount 1208A is the first radar transmitter designed specifically for water and process industry utility applications to offer IO-Link connectivity as part of its hybrid communication options that also include three-wire 4-20 mA and switch outputs. IO-Link connectivity reduces installation complexity, enables simple integration into high-level automation networks, and provides access to process insights that can enhance operational performance. It further reduces complexity by enabling remote configuration and monitoring.

The Rosemount 1208C offers two-wire 4-20 mA and HART® communication options, providing access to advanced diagnostics. This supports predictive maintenance and more effective troubleshooting, leading to reduced downtime and improved operational efficiency. Hazardous area approval enables use in areas where an explosive gas atmosphere could occur during normal operation.

Pathbreaking pressure gauge.

PVL switches and sensors is pleased has announced the launch of the Ogauge, the world’s first IIoT pressure gauge from Orion Instruments. Ogauge is a pathbreaking device, which combines a number of instrumentation functions in a single device - an IIoT pressure gauge, switch, transmitter and datalogger.

3 modes of operation:

Pressure Gauges:
Ogauges are accurate enough for most applications. Applications for plain pressure gauges include test gauges, for leakage testing, or monitoring pump discharge pressure. With level mode they can be used to measure volume of liquid in a tank, or its mass, or capacity. With Force mode, it can be used for measuring force generated by hydraulic cylinders to be applied on the platen.

ΔP Delta-P differential pressure Gauges:
In many applications it is important to measure and display the upstream and downstream pressure, along with the differential pressure. Planar differential gauges provide these functions. All the subsequent logic can be built on the differential pressure, and the four inbuilt solid-state relays rated can be configured for triggering subsequent elements in the logic. They also can be easily mounted on a standard manifold valve vertically.

ΔP Delta-P differential pressure Gauges
Differential pressure gauges are typically used for flow monitoring or checking the health of a filter, monitoring level in closed or open tanks. Ogauges, can be effectively used to trigger subsequent actions as they incorporate four independently configurable relays. Different colours used in the display sectors help in configuring the visual presentation on the gauge of the status of a filter. Two independent configurable analogue outputs can be wired into the distribution control system (DCS) or programmable logic controller (PLC) for various functions to be performed or logic to be programmed.
The Industrial Internet of Things uses smart sensors and actuators to enhance manufacturing and industrial processes, increasing productivity and reducing downtime. The Ogauge is an ideal component for IIoT and I4.0 systems.

Featuring an integrated pressure measurement cell, a full coloured OLED display and four switching outputs, the Ogauge offers users all the advantages of a modern electronic pressure switch, gauge and a transmitter. The four switching points and switch-back points can be adjusted very simply and independently of one another using the onboard capacitive touch keypad.

The Ogauge’s integrated IIoT wireless connectivity provides programming through a mobile app (Android/iOS) as well as a secure cloud-based dashboard which can be used to access multiple Ogauges.

Key features of the Ogauge include IIoT capability, 2 configurable analogue output signals, four independently configurable relays rated at 5A, 250VAC, simple operation via key programming (simpler still via mobile app), IP66 protection, integrated pressure sensor with stainless steel membrane (special materials available) and can be paired to a mobile via app to check live pressures. Accuracy of 0.25% is standard (finer accuracies are available), can be set to display values in any unit of measurement such as kN, kg, psi, full colour OLED informative alpha numeric with full LED display bar graph, and a single Ogauge can be used as a pressure gauge or a force gauge or a level gauge.

Process data and diagnostics from many field radar level transmitters.

Gathering and communicating critical measurement and diagnostic data in oil and gas applications can be extremely challenging due to the harsh and remote conditions associated with these operations. A company in Kuwait recently needed a way to acquire data from dozens of radar LEVEL transmitters in the field, and in addition, provide power to these transmitters because there were limited power sources available at the site. Moore Industries HES HART to Ethernet Gateway System was able to fulfill both of these requirements.

The client multi-dropped six output loop-powered radar level transmitters to each single-channel HES for data acquisition, and utilized the HES transmitter excitation power supply feature to power the transmitters. The gathered process and diagnostic data was then sent over MODBUS/TCP from the HES back to the client’s BPCS (MODBUS/TCP Host) for higher level control, data acquisition and monitoring functions.

The HES offers a flexible and economical way to gather process data and instrument diagnostics from smart HART instruments and share it over an Ethernet infrastructure via its embedded web server or with MODBUS/TCP and HART-IP hosts. This enables fast and seamless connectivity for advanced monitoring of critical process variables and parameters. In addition to the single channel configuration outlined above, the HES is also available in a four channel configuration supporting up to 64 HART devices. The HES communicates with all HART 5, 6 and 7 devices including smart valves, multivariable flowmeters, pressure, pH, level, and temperature transmitters and more.

Level gauge optimises separation performance.

Emerson has enhanced its Rosemount™ 5300 Guided Wave Radar Level Transmitter to optimise separation process performance and prevent costly product ingress by accurately measuring a thinner top liquid layer in interface applications. The Rosemount 5300, which is the market leading guided wave radar for liquid level measurement (VDC Research 2017), can now also perform measurements to the top of a tank, enabling increased throughput and profitability. Additional new features provide greater ease-of-use, increased safety and enhanced performance in the most challenging level and interface applications.

Operators have long struggled to obtain the most accurate level interface measurements to increase the efficiency of separators and maximise profits. In addition, with large tanks able to contain millions of gallons of liquids, even a small volume inaccuracy can translate into millions of dollars in lost revenue.

In interface measurement applications such as separators, the top product layer must be of a certain minimum thickness for a guided wave radar transmitter to distinguish between the echoes from the two liquids. Previously, this minimum detectable thickness would be between 50 and 200 millimetres. Emerson’s unique patented Peak in Peak interface algorithm now enables the Rosemount 5300 to detect a top liquid layer of just 25 millimetres. This further prevents unwanted product ingress and enables the performance of a separation process to be optimised, helping users maximise operational efficiency and profitability.

The Rosemount 5300 can provide accurate and repeatable measurement to the very top of a tank when used with a large diameter coaxial probe, enabling users to optimise tank capacity and increase throughput. These probes provide the strongest return signal, have no upper dead band and are not affected by obstacles on the tank wall. High amplitude noise created as microwaves pass through the process seal between transmitter and probe has traditionally affected measurement accuracy at the top of the tank. Enhanced process seal design has enabled Emerson to eliminate this noise, facilitating accurate measurement to the top of the tank during both filling and emptying phases.

To increase measurement reliability and ease-of-use in upstream oil and gas applications, the Rosemount 5300 features a new factory-configured threshold setting, where the echo below the threshold is assumed to be oil and the echo above the threshold is assumed to be water. This eliminates double signal bounces that can be mistaken as an interface level measurement and enables more predictable behaviour. This creates a true plug-and-play device that simplifies installation and operation.

“Maximising tank capacity and increasing throughput are important objectives for end users, as this leads to increased profitability,” said Christoffer Widahl, product management lead with Emerson’s measurement and analytical business. “The ability of the Rosemount 5300 to accurately and reliably measure a thinner top liquid layer and right to the top of the tank, enables them to achieve this, even in the most challenging level and interface applications.”

To ensure the integrity of the transmitter in safety-critical applications such as overfill prevention and dry pump protection, verification reflector functionality enables comprehensive remote proof-testing of the device with 94% test coverage. This can be performed in minutes from the control room during operation and without having to raise the tank level to a potentially hazardous point, thereby reducing downtime, minimising risk and maximising the safety of both plant and workers. Compared with traditional diagnostics, which only monitor the transmitter electronics, verification reflector functionality can also be used to diagnose problems with the upper parts of the probe inside the tank, such as corrosion monitoring and other process-related conditions.

Further supporting increased ease-of-use, the Rosemount 5300 is now fully and easily configurable using a broad range of customer tools, with both the Device Descriptor and Device Type Manager configuration methods updated to the latest device dashboard. The device’s configuration software can now switch between Rosemount and NAMUR (Normenarbeitsgemeinschaft für Messund Regeltechnik in der Chemischen Industrie) alarm limits, thereby providing users with increased flexibility of choice.

Temperature trasmitters with USB port.

A new generation of universal temperature transmitters, FlexTop 2212 and 2222,  announced by Baumer expands its proven range of products. With integrated micro-USB port, automated cable compensation and a fast sampling time of less than 50 ms, it stands out from other commercially available products and is also suitable for demanding applications in a wide variety of areas.

The digital transmitters with 4 ... 20 mA analog outputs are powered through the current loop. The model 2222 also offers HART communication. The sensor inputs can optionally be configured for resistance thermometers, thermocouples, resistance sensors and voltage signals. Depending on requirements, a 2, 3 or 4-wire input can be selected. This makes the transmitters very flexible in their application, keeps stocks low and saves costs. The integrated standard interface allows simple and direct programming at any time and in any place. An additional interface is not necessary.

The multi-colored indicator light provides a visual indication of the status of the measured values. This simplifies diagnostics and helps in troubleshooting. Automatic cable compensation eliminates complicated calculations, reduces the work involved in calibration and guarantees accurate measurements regardless of the length of the cable.

The FlexTops 2212 and 2222 are prepared for direct display connection using UnitCom cables. This allows for comfortable operation on site by touch screen and rules out conversion errors. They are molded in silicone rubber, which makes them insensitive to humid environments. The two mounting screws with standard 33mm spacing and pressure springs guarantee reliable sensor contact in DIN 43729-compatible heads, even when there are vibrations.

TSS sensors & transmitter.

Krohne has added two new total suspended solids (TSS) sensors and a transmitter to its analytical portfolio.

OPTISENS TSS 3000 is a total suspended solids sensor for wastewater applications in various industries with 1 1/4 NPT thread to fit into a retractable or immersion assembly. OPTISENS TSS 7000 is a total suspended solids sensor for hygienic applications with Tri-Clamp or VARIVENT* process connection, e.g. in milk separation, fruit processing and other food and beverage applications. It can also be used for hygienic concentration measurement in other process industries, e.g. for monitoring steam or cooling water circuits.

OPTISENS TSS 3000 and 7000 both are glass free optical sensors with multiple path lengths for various concentration ranges. They use alternating light 4-beam technology for a higher reliability of the measurement compared to classic 2-beam technologies. 2 NIR LEDs (880 nm) light sources and 2 detectors compensate for most errors caused by dirt, aging or light source variations. By measuring directly through a PP layer, measurement errors and sealing problems typically caused by glass windows cannot occur. Both can be operated with the MAC 300 analytical transmitter.

MAC 300 is a menu driven analytical transmitter for OPTISENS TSS, pH/ORP and COND sensors. It can be operated with up to three different analytical sensors, processing their signals to the control system via up to six analogue 0/4...20 mA outputs, relay outputs or optional Modbus. It features a backlit LCD display, robust housing (IP66/67, NEMA 4/4X) for wall-mount or panel-mount installation, optional live trending and data logging, and an SD card slot to save parameter sets or upload new firmware.

DP Transmitter on very long train!

ADZ NAGANO develops and manufactures pressure sensors and transmitters that meet the highest industrial requirements for standard and specialist applications ranging from mobile machinery to aerospace equipment. Represented in Britain by Variohm EuroSensor, ADZ is especially active in technologically demanding projects such as the following railway braking application that call upon its considerable expertise to solve unusually challenging tasks.

On very long railway trains, the multiple locomotives positioned at the beginning and in the middle and probably at the end of a train, usually communicate via radio. Commands for braking or accelerating, for instance, are transmitted in that way. However, in difficult terrain such as in the mountains or in tunnels, communication may be interrupted or not sufficiently reliable. This may result in severe problems. A back-end train segment, for example, that is not braked or whose speed in a bend is too high, involves a risk of accident that must not be underestimated.

Remedial help can be provided by ADZ’s SMD Differential Pressure Sensor, which measures the flowrate in the braking system. The values will determine whether a signal for braking or for releasing the brakes is required. The locomotive in middle position or at the end of the train, which then has no radio link, receives this information and initiates braking or loosening the brakes for the respective train segment.

The sensors are additionally used to make sure prior to departure from a station that the brake system is completely tight and has no leak. The proof that such a test is performed before leaving a station and the measured data recorded is statutorily required in Canada and the US, for example.

The sensor must withstand typical rail requirements with a view to prevailing temperatures, vibrations and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This in turn requires the sensors neither to be interfered by mobile phone signals or other radio sources nor to influence them.

The sensor design is custom-made, individually fitting the respective requirements regarding the available space, necessary connecting configurations or electrical contacts.

Safety shutdown & alarm control in field-based final elements.

United Electric Controls (UE,)  has added two DC-voltage switching models to its One Series Safety Transmitter (ST) line. With its ability to directly switch 24 VDC and 125 VDC as well as 250 VAC loads, the One Series ST models can now provide SIL 2-certified control for many types of final elements including pilot valves, actuators, motor controllers and other SIS elements, without involving a DCS or safety PLC.

“Many control schemes are transitioning to low-voltage equipment, primarily to reduce electric shock hazards in the plant or are looking to improve response time and reduce costs by switching final elements directly from the transmitter. By enabling switching of 24 VDC and 125 VDC final elements from our safety transmitters, we’ve made it possible for more companies to add simple and cost-effective SIL 2 safety loops in the field where a PLC or DCS may not be available,” said Wil Chin, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, United Electric Controls, adding that the ability to directly control legacy equipment that utilizes 125 VDC control schemes is especially valuable to power plants.

One Series safety transmitters reduce cost and improve safety by embedding a process sensor, logic solver and safety relay in a single, SIL 2-certified field device. Although it looks like a traditional temperature or pressure transmitter, the ST can also switch final elements such as valves, motors, and blowers directly from the transmitter, maximizing response time while eliminating the wiring inherent in having to route a shutdown or alarm response through a PLC or another safety controller.

To address the growing demand for lower voltage switching of 24 VDC equipment, United Electric Controls has now added a Safety Relay Output (SRO) capable of handling 0-30 VDC at 6 amperes. To meet the needs of customers who were using 125 V DC equipment, most of whom are in the power industry, UE has added an SRO capable of switching 0-130 VDC at 2.5 amperes. With these additions, One Series Safety Transmitters models can now be specified for either pressure or temperature monitoring at any of the following current levels:
  • 12-250 VAC @ 5 mA-5 A (Model 2SLP47)
  • 0-30 VDC @ 6 A, 1.8 A Pilot Duty (Model 2SLP48)
  • 0-130 VDC @ 2.5 A, Q1501 Pilot Duty (Model 2SLP49)
All One Series Safety Transmitters provide 4-20 mA NAMUR NE 43 standard output with exclusive “I Am Working™” diagnostics. The transmitters are certified for use in SIL 2 safety instrumented systems, and are capable of SIL 3, per IEC 61508. They have configurable self-diagnostics and achieve a safe failure fraction of 98.8%. Additional low-level discrete outputs communicate health and set point status, ideal for voting logic schemes. Instrument response time is <100 milliseconds.="" p="">

Level in high temp applications.

Magnetrol® International has announced the release of the E3 Modulevel® displacer level transmitter with an increased upper temperature rating. E3 MODULEVEL transmitters now handle process temperatures of up to +450 °C (+850 °F) for non-steam applications and +425 °C (+800 °F) for steam applications. This capability helps protect downstream equipment by providing accurate, reliable liquid and interface level control in extreme process conditions.

Using linear variable differential transformer (LVDT)/range spring technology, E3 MODULEVEL transmitters offer outstanding output stability, structural integrity and ease of use. Vertical in-line design of the transmitter results in low instrument weight and simplified installation.

Clever signal integration solution for 4-wire transmitters in zone 1.

Hooking up a 4-wire transmitter to a 4-20 mA supply input is obviously problematic, since two power sources cannot usually be connected. For this scenario and other real-life challenges, R. Stahl has introduced the Ex i isolator series 9164.

Suitable for use in zone 1 hazardous areas and non-hazardous areas, this new generation of mA isolating repeaters enables a 4-wire transmitter connection via Ex i or Ex e signals. The devices boast a unique feature: their inputs and outputs act as passive current sinks and do not generate an active power signal of their own when converting an active into a passive 4... 20 mA signal. Notably, the isolating repeaters also allow for a bidirectional transmission of a superimposed HART communication signal.

Three versions are available. One version allows for galvanic isolation of two intrinsically safe circuits. With no Ex i output parameters and a relatively low voltage drop, it can be used for signal decoupling as well. That way, measured values can be passed on to other systems with ease.

A second version with an integrated fuse can be used to isolate an Ex e from an Ex i circuit. This type also enables users to connect an isolating repeater with increased safety type of protection to an Ex i input at a later stage, without the need for extra Ex e line installations.

The third type of module features identical functions for non-hazardous areas. The new isolating repeaters ensure extremely high accuracy and can be used in an ambient temperature range between -40 °C and +75 °C. While ATEX and IECEx certifications have already been procured, others for use all over the world as well as an assessment for use in functional safety applications (SIL) will follow soon.

Versatility, Capability and Economy in Industrial Process Monitoring.

A significant upgrade to United Electric Controls' One Series line of explosion-proof, programmable transmitters and switches has appeared. The new line compresses all of the functionality of the preceding line into only five models while adding new operational, programming and diagnostics capabilities.

"“Delivering functionality to addresses the new application needs that have emerged since we introduced the concept of self-diagnostic switches more than 18 years ago had required 18 different models. Now, by incorporating the technology advances we made in developing our One Series SIL-certified safety transmitter, we can deliver all of that functionality plus additional capabilities with only five models. This makes upgrading from mechanical switches easier than ever for customers trying to reduce the cost and improve performance in industrial monitoring and switching,”" said Wil Chin, Vice President of Marketing & Business Development, United Electric Controls.

United Electric Controls One Series instruments provide unique alternatives to both conventional mechanical switches and transmitters for controlling operations such pumps and compressors, lubrication oil monitoring, hydraulic pressure, filter status and other industrial applications based on temperature or pressure. The new One Series line offers these advantages by providing switch only, transmitter only and hybrid transmitter-switch models.

New application versatility
Customers choose from among the following new One Series instruments based on their requirements for integrated switching and sensing, intrinsic safety, power level and power source.

  • For integrated switching and transmitter, model 1XTXSW provides a loop-powered 24 VDC HART enabled smart-transmitter, with two programmable set point fail-safe solid state relays rated at 0-280 VAC/VDC @ 0.3 A.
  • For high voltage, low current switching only, model 1XSWHL provides a 2-wire input powered switch for 110 and 230 VAC and 125 VDC logic solver inputs, with a programmable set point switch rated at 70 – 240 VAC/VDC at 0.1 A max.
  • For low voltage, low current, intrinsically safe switching only, model 1XSWLL provides a 2-wire input powered switch for 24 and 48 VDC logic solver inputs, with a programmable set point switch rated at 7.8 – 50 VDC at 0.1 A max.
  • For high voltage, high current switching only, model 1XSWHH provides a 4-wire externally powered programmable set point switch rated at 70 – 240 VAC @ 0.15 - 10 A
  • For use as a transmitter only, model 1XTX00 provides a loop-powered 24 VDC HART enabled smart transmitter compliant to the NAMUR NE 43 standard.

Both of the 2-Wire input powered switch models mentioned above (model 1XSWLL and 1XSWHL) utilize existing wiring and control schemes and can provide a drop-in replacement for mechanical switches. No wiring or control system programming changes are required, providing easy and cost-effective plant upgrades.

New operability
All One Series models have extensive diagnostics, programmability and trip management capabilities. Configurable I Am Working (IAW™) self-diagnostics provide piece of mind that the instrument is functioning properly by communicating with the control system using a dedicated discrete fail-safe-open output. The integral digital process display shows what is happening in the process at a glance. Powerful plugged port diagnostics flag potentially dangerous sensor clogs and memorizes the highest and lowest process variables for process troubleshooting and learning.

A programmable set point and deadband provides versatile, accurate and repeatable alarm and shutdown switching using the integral keypad. HART® enabled models provide full access and control of all transmitter and switching functions using any registered HART communicator. A programmable trip delay, which holds off the trip decision for tenths of seconds up to several minutes, provides operators time to gather more data before initiating a shutdown. Nuisance trip filtering eliminates unwanted nuisance trips and unnecessary alarms; and an electronic trip counter records trips for up to two relays to assist with process adjustments and troubleshooting.

Availability
All models come with a 3-year warranty and are available immediately. United Electric Controls offers a switch modernization program in which they will provide a free, onsite analysis of opportunities for improving industrial operations monitoring and equipment control via integrated sensing and switching.
