Optimising inventory management and operational efficiency.

Real-time inventory insights with integrated features to simplify use, free up data and reduce costs.

The Rosemount™ 2405 Monitoring Hub, a simple yet powerful device that delivers full inventory control and monitoring of multiple storage tanks, has been released by Emerson. The Rosemount 2405 is designed to simplify tank monitoring system architecture, enabling organisations to automate applications previously deemed too complex or costly. The insights provided by the hub help to optimise inventory management, leading to improved decision-making, increased operational efficiency and reduced costs.

“Reliable access to real-time operational data through intuitive, intelligent interfaces is now an expectation in the process industries,” said Mikael Inglund, director of product management with Emerson’s measurement business. “Easy-to-deploy automated tank monitoring, enabled by the Rosemount 2405, allows operators to quickly view, interpret and act upon critical information. This supports improved decision-making and leads to more efficient inventory management and reduced costs.”

Many organisations within the chemical, refining, oil and gas, metals and mining, and food and beverage industries still rely on manual inventory checks and lack the capability to implement an automated tank monitoring system. This can be compounded by the complexity and cost of integrating system components such as a display, a communication unit and a data concentrator. By integrating these three components into a single device, the Rosemount 2405 simplifies system architecture, making it easier and less costly to upgrade to an automated solution.

This simplified system architecture is supported by the ability to connect up to eight HART®-enabled level, pressure or temperature transmitters to the Rosemount 2405. The hub then collects, calculates, visualises and communicates the measurement data for centralised monitoring and inventory management. Digital HART multidrop connectivity allows multiple field instruments to connect to the Rosemount 2405 over a single twisted-pair cable. This significantly reduces wiring infrastructure complexity and costs by minimising the need for additional cables, junction boxes and input channels.

In alignment with Emerson’s Boundless AutomationSM vision for data mobility, the Rosemount 2405 offers seamless integration with the Rosemount TankMaster™ and TankMaster Mobile inventory management platforms, and reliable connectivity with third-party host systems. The hub provides flexible access to the inventory data, which can be viewed either locally in the field, or via a web browser. Digital HART connectivity enables real-time transmission of device diagnostics and status information alongside process variables, supporting proactive maintenance.

With an intuitive display and step-by-step guidance, the Rosemount 2405 makes it easier to configure the multiple connected measurement devices, while further minimising complexity by reducing the training required and the time involved in setting up a tank monitoring system. The user-friendly interface also simplifies troubleshooting when issues arise, enabling faster resolution and reduced downtime and costs.

Seamless bi-directional HART data transmission.

A significant feature update for the HES HART to Ethernet Gateway System has been introduced by Moore Industries. This introduces HART Tunneling which enables remote communication with HART field devices. This new feature allows seamless bi-directional HART data transmission between PC-based HART software applications and HES connected field devices over Ethernet.

HART Tunneling with the HES permits users to send read and write HART commands remotely with any HART-capable software application, such as PACTware or an asset management system, through the HES without requiring physical access to field instruments. Acting as a gateway, the HES facilitates seamless HART communication between Ethernet and twisted pair networks, simplifying the configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics of remote HART devices.

Unlike costly and complex HART multiplexer systems, the HES now offers a simple and cost-effective approach for connecting to just one or a few critical remote HART devices over your facility’s local or remote Ethernet infrastructure.

Key features of HES HART Tunneling:

  • Seamless Integration – Direct communication from PC-based HART software applications to field devices over Ethernet networks.
  • Enhanced Accessibility – Remote configuration and diagnostics monitoring of HART field devices from a control room or off-site location.
  • Security Measures – A security jumper on the HES enables or disables HART tunneling to address cybersecurity concerns.
  • No Additional Cost – All new HES units include the HART Tunneling feature at no extra charge. The firmware on previously supplied HES units can be upgraded to include the HART Tunneling feature.

To utilize HART Tunneling with the HES, a Virtual Serial Port (VSP) software application is required to create a bridge between the HART PC-based software application and the HES.

Temperature concentrator system with increased efficiency.

A significant product update to the TCS Temperature Concentrator System has been released by Moore Industries. The TCS originally consisted of the TCM Temperature Concentrator Module and the HMC HART® -to-MODBUS RTU Converter, which work together to reduce the cost of transmitting multiple temperature sensor measurements in both general-purpose and hazardous area applications by concentrating and transmitting up to 32 signals over one MODBUS RTU based network.

The latest product update to the TCS enables a HES HART-to-Ethernet Gateway System to be used with the 16-channel TCM Temperature Concentrator Modules, allowing for Ethernet-based communication with the TCS. The HES is available in a single-channel or 4-channel model and can connect with up to two TCMs per channel, allowing up to eight TCMs to communicate with one HES. This allows 128 different temperature signals to flow over an Ethernet link from the field to a MODBUS/TCP-based host. Additionally, these temperature readings can be read by a HART-IP-based host or viewed with any off-the-shelf web browser since the HES includes an embedded web server. Unlike the HMC, the HES can communicate with up to sixteen HART devices per channel. Each 16-channel TCM is considered one HART device, so if two TCMs are connected on a particular HES channel, 14 additional HART devices can still be connected to the channel along with the TCMs.

The TCM Temperature Concentrator Module converts its signal inputs to standard HART protocol, which allows the HES to poll each TCM using a device-specific HART command. This device-specific command enables the TCM to send all 16 channel values in one HART message packet, thus increasing throughput and response time.

The TCS system significantly reduces the cost of transmitting multiple temperature sensor measurements in both general-purpose and hazardous areas. TCM module, equipped with 16 I/O channels, can be configured for various input types and converts them to the HART® digital protocol for long-distance transmission to a HES, HCS, or HART-based host. The TCS Temperature Concentrator System supports HART, MODBUS RTU, MODBUS/TCP, and HART-IP communications, allowing seamless integration with various monitoring and control systems. It is intrinsically safe approved for use in hazardous areas and enables cost-effective installation by minimising the need for dedicated transmitters and wiring.

Refrigerant manufacturer is plant of the year.

FieldComm Group has announced that the Daikin Industries Ltd. Plant in Kashima, Japan, has been selected the 2023 Plant of the Year*. This is the 21st annual awarding of this unique international honor, presented to end user companies in the process automation industry to recognize the exceptional and valuable application of FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus, FDI™ and/or HART® Communication technologies.

The Daikin Kashima plant produces a wide range of fluorochemical products used in air conditioning equipment, automobiles, semiconductor production, and other applications. Advanced digital technologies have been applied at this site as part of a digital transformation (DX) initiative. The team has implemented HART-enabled instrumentation, and associated digital diagnostic tools and predictive analytics, all combined with artificial intelligence (AI), so the facility can transition from traditional time-based maintenance to more effective condition-based maintenance.

By first learning normal plant behavior from historized big data, the AI system can then perform nonlinear regression analysis on live data using a neural network, enabling the anomaly detection and prediction needed to address potential problems and avoid unexpected shutdowns.

Many valve positioners, pressure transmitters, and Coriolis flowmeters were already HART-enabled, and the team used Fast Ethernet-based HART converters to access other equipment, along with various DCS/PLC systems. Daikin officials point out that success of AI depends on the accuracy of available data, and HART devices made a difference in this regard.

“The HART signals of each device are wonderful data packed with the know-how of each device manufacturer. By having AI learn this along with various process data in the plant, it's more likely to be able to learn various signs of equipment anomalies,” said Masumi Yoshida of the Daikin Industries engineering department.

Condition-based maintenance at this plant over the past three years has reduced maintenance costs by an estimated US $400,000, and the team is looking to expand the technology to many more production sites around the world.

Ethernet-APL HART converter.

ProComSol's new Ethernet-APL HART Converter (HM-APL-PCB) has been released. Transmitter manufacturers can easily convert existing HART transmitters to the new Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer (APL) interface. The PCB can be customized to incorporate custom features or size requirements (see HART-APL-DEV). You can also quickly design “direct to APL” transmitters without using HART.

According to Jeffrey Dobos, President of ProComSol, Ltd, “Ethernet-APL is an exciting new technology. Manufacturers who want to add it to their product portfolio can now do it quickly and without high cost.”

The HM-APL-PCB consists of a ready to use PCB with a HART connector and an APL connector. Simply connect the HART transmitter to the HART connector and now the HART transmitter is an APL transmitter. The APL connection supplies all power needed for the PCB and the connected HART transmitter. Full documentation and support is included. ProComSol also offers full PCB customization capabilities, including board layout, to fit your existing HART transmitter enclosure.

The HART-IP protocol is used by the host system to configure and monitor the transmitter using Ethernet. Any HART-IP compliant host (such as ProComSol’s DevCom family of Apps) can access the APL transmitter via Ethernet through an APL Switch. No software development required.

The PCB can also be used as a baseline “direct to APL” design for new transmitters. The PCB supports various hardware peripherals such as Analog I/O, I2C, and SPI Flash memory so you can quickly prototype and demonstrate APL functions on a new transmitter without using HART. Again, full documentation and support is available along with customization services.

Emergency shutdown discrete valve controller.

Providing detailed valve assembly data and diagnostics, enables predictive maintenance and reliable operation.

The TopWorx™ DX PST with HART® 7 has just been introduced by Emerson. Units provide valuable valve data and diagnostic information, enabling the digital transformation of process applications. The new DX PST integrates seamlessly with existing valves and control systems, giving operators access to critical valve data, trends, and diagnostics that can be used to predict and schedule maintenance.

The DX PST’s partial stroke test ensures the system’s reliable function without shutting down the process. A safety feature that confirms the valve will fully close and stop the process if an emergency is detected, and the test is activated by simply pressing the local PST button — no additional equipment is required. To prevent critical failure in upset conditions, the unit will override testing to perform an emergency shutdown (ESD).

Certified for operation in harsh and hazardous applications, the adaptive DX PST is designed to ensure the integrity of valves, improving overall safety and facility uptime in oil and gas, refinery, chemical, industrial energy and mining applications.

“The digital transformation of the process industry continues to make operations safer and more productive,” said Prayag Vatsraj, Global Product Manager of Emerson’s Switchbox. “The DX PST with HART 7 supports digital transformation by providing reliable data that delivers valuable insight into the condition of valve assemblies that ensures the integrity of the system without shutting down the process.”

The HART® protocol, the specifications of which are owned by the FieldComm Group, builds another layer of information that ensures data, trends and diagnostics are monitored and tied into the Industrial Internet of Things. This information can be used to effectively predict and schedule maintenance.

Capable of Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3), the DX PST is available with an integrated 2oo2 or 2oo3 solenoid valve redundancy when paired with ASCOTM Series Advanced Redundant Control System (ARCS) to further enhance safety and open terminals that allow an additional pressure transmitter along with two pressure switches. The discrete valve controller offers simple local and remote calibration.

Process data and diagnostics from many field radar level transmitters.

Gathering and communicating critical measurement and diagnostic data in oil and gas applications can be extremely challenging due to the harsh and remote conditions associated with these operations. A company in Kuwait recently needed a way to acquire data from dozens of radar LEVEL transmitters in the field, and in addition, provide power to these transmitters because there were limited power sources available at the site. Moore Industries HES HART to Ethernet Gateway System was able to fulfill both of these requirements.

The client multi-dropped six output loop-powered radar level transmitters to each single-channel HES for data acquisition, and utilized the HES transmitter excitation power supply feature to power the transmitters. The gathered process and diagnostic data was then sent over MODBUS/TCP from the HES back to the client’s BPCS (MODBUS/TCP Host) for higher level control, data acquisition and monitoring functions.

The HES offers a flexible and economical way to gather process data and instrument diagnostics from smart HART instruments and share it over an Ethernet infrastructure via its embedded web server or with MODBUS/TCP and HART-IP hosts. This enables fast and seamless connectivity for advanced monitoring of critical process variables and parameters. In addition to the single channel configuration outlined above, the HES is also available in a four channel configuration supporting up to 64 HART devices. The HES communicates with all HART 5, 6 and 7 devices including smart valves, multivariable flowmeters, pressure, pH, level, and temperature transmitters and more.

Low cost temperature measurement.

Moore Industries’ TCS Temperature Concentrator System is a solution for low-cost temperature measurements.

At its heart is the 16-channel, loop-powered (2-wire) TCM Temperature Concentrator Module. When two TCM modules are used in a TCS, up to 32 signals can be monitored over one twisted wire pair. The TCM is approved for use in hazardous areas (Div 2/Zone 2 and Div 1/Zone 0/1) and can be used with an HMC (HART to MODBUS RTU Converter) when communication with a MODBUS RTU master is required.

Using the TCS provides a precision measurement at less than 25 percent of the cost of a comparable standalone smart temperature transmitter. Hardware, wiring and installation costs are reduced because the TCS eliminates the need to install a dedicated transmitter and twisted-wire pair for each measurement. The compact design of the TCS also means a significant savings in real estate needs to measure temperatures. These cost savings are just a few of the benefits of the TCS solution. Other key features include:

Universal Input Options: The TCM can be set to accept RTD (2-wire, 3-wire, 4-wire, PT, Cu or Ni), thermocouple (Types J, K, E, T, R, S, N, B or C), resistance/potentiometer (0 to 4000 ohms) and millivolt (-50 to 1,000mV) inputs. Custom input linearization can be defined for any input.

Deployment of HART and MODBUS RTU Communications: The HMC allows for communications with a MODBUS RTU-based host system. The ability to use either the standard HART or MODBUS communications protocols allow easy interface to a wide range of DCS, PLC and computer-based networks.

Generating Alarms: If the HMC is utilized it can be programmed to provide two alarm relay outputs. The relays can send a master alarm when the HMC detects one, any or all of the following fault conditions within the system:
No HART signal
Broken wire
Hardware error
Bad configuration
Input saturated
Input out of table range
Both alarms can be set with a time delay, which specifies how long the alarm condition needs to exist before the alarm trips.

Versatile Programming: The TCM’s operating parameters can be configured from any HART-based system or, using a standard HART handheld, from anywhere along the twisted wire pair. The TCM can also be configured using our Intelligent PC Configuration software.

Monitoring/Control analogue & digital.

The new SHD 200 control unit from Krohne can be used with any 4-20mA/HART field device for monitoring of process parameters and additional control functionality in various industries.

Beyond the functionality of a pure loop powered display, the SHD 200 offers a second current output (passive) that can be used for any HART variable provided by the field device. Thus, digital HART information can now be transmitted by an additional analogue 4-20 mA signal. The second current output can also be used for LEDs for signalisation of the field device status according to NAMUR NE 107 and for backlight.

The SHD 200 also features two programmable relays for status output, system alarm or limit switch functionality. By combining the input and output options, SHD 200 can be used for basic control applications: examples are displaying static and differential pressure with limit switch valve opening function in DP flow applications, simple dosing in pH value control applications or control of heating and cooling processes using the temperature values/ temperature difference of two temperature sensors.

When used as a display, SHD 200 provides convenient displaying of 4-20 mA and/or HART values via customer-specific measurement pages. It shows up to four different values for detailed process monitoring, including trend graph and summary page. Full access to all specific functions of the field device is possible via a HART handheld that can be connected to the SHD 200 via the internal or the optional external adapter.

Accessing HART data for IIoT.

ProComSol has released its new 4 Channel HART multiplexer with HART-IP. This device allows the user to perform HART communications using the plant’s Ethernet network infrastructure. According to Jeffrey Dobos, President of ProComSol, “Adding a HART-IP based HART multiplexer to the existing plant HART network provides a low cost way to access HART instrument data for IIoT applications”.

The HMUX-4-DS HART Multiplexer, 4 channel, Dual Speed mounts on the cabinet’s DIN rail. The Mux connect to the HART instruments anywhere in the control loop. These loop connections are easily be made in the marshaling cabinet so wiring effort is minimal. When the Mux is connected to the plant Ethernet network, the HART data becomes accessible wherever the network is available.

The typical use case is to setup a network connected pc running a HART-IP client that collects the measurement and status data from the HART instruments. This information can stay in the plant or be sent to the cloud for backup and ease of sharing. HART-IP is a standard protocol for encapsulating HART commands into Ethernet (TCP/IP) packets for communications over Ethernet networks.

Several software products exist for this task. ProComSol offers their popular DevCom2000 Smart Device Communicator software that can collect the data, and the user can access the HART device as if they were next to the device with a traditional HART communicator. Since DevCom2000 is DD based, all device parameters are available, including Methods.

Dual Speed refers to the support of PSK HART devices. PSK operates at 9600 baud so is nearly 8 times faster than traditional FSK HART devices. The Mux “future proofs” the data collection system for when PSK devices start to become available. No need to replace the Mux. Interested device manufacturers should contact ProComSol regarding hardware/software and support for adding PSK to their product line.

Indicator for all.

Most process loop indicators do an adequate job in indicating a process variable in the field. But what happens when signals are from level transmitters that sit on vessels where the level is not linear with volume and the loop indicator needs to display the volume? Or what if yesterday’s installation area was a Div 2/Zone 2 location and today it’s a Div 1/Zone 0/1 location? And what happens when you need to setup 50 loop indicators with tedious push button set up or a small HART handheld screen?

If you think all of this is too complicated and costly, meet the PSD – Moore Industries PC-Programmable 4-20mA Loop Display (2-Wire). Loop powered by less than 2.3 Volts, the PSD can be installed on burdened loops. When placed in one of Moore Industries’ rugged explosion-proof enclosures, the PSD has 3600 flexible mounting, letting you mount it at any angle.

The LCD is an easy-to-read display featuring two rows of large characters and supports five characters for EGU (engineering units). A handy front push button allows the operator to view the lower and upper EGU and shows the actual current on the loop that the PSD is reading.

The PSD is simple to program and comes with free PC Programming software allowing configuration in less than a minute with excellent support for custom curves. The software allows you to build up to an 85-point linearization curve, or you can build your own curve in Microsoft Excel then quickly and easily import it into the PSD.

For critical loops an optional LMD (loop maintenance diode) is available. The LMD allows the removal of the PSD from the current loop without breaking or bringing down the loop. The PSD is not only feature- rich with an easy-to-read customizable display, it is cost effective and an excellent choice to keep on hand in your stockroom for future needs.

Cloud Functions for HART device.

ProComSol has  announced the addition of Cloud functions for the management of HART device configuration data. These Cloud functions are available now in the DevCom App for Android and iOS (Apple). The Cloud functions allow the user to save device configurations to a private Cloud account on the ProComSol servers. This provides data back-up, security, and the ability to share the configuration data plant-wide.

According to Jeffrey Dobos, President of ProComSol, Ltd, “HART device configuration data is extremely valuable for maintaining plant operations. When this data is available to whoever needs it, when they need it, plant operations become more efficient and reliable.”

A DevCom App user acting as an administrator can setup Groups and users as Members in the Groups. When the group member saves a device configuration using DevCom App, the data is automatically sent to the Cloud for storage. Once in the cloud, other members of the Group can view the saved configuration data from their DevCom App. This is helpful for many use cases including HART device replacement, audits, and device documentation.

A central repository of HART device data also reduces risk of data loss. Besides the clear benefit of a continuous data backup, when a user leaves the company, the configuration data does not leave with him. This is also useful for when a technician is not available due to vacation or illness, the device data is still available for others in the Group.

To enable the Cloud features, a DevCom license is required. The user then purchases the CLOUD-1YR, Cloud Subscription to access these features. Each Group member needs a subscription as well. One year subscriptions start at $200 (€183) for 20 saved configurations per user.

Faster integration in projects and operations.

New HART-IP support simplifies link between field devices and AMS Device Manager, reducing asset management project installation costs by up to 85%

Emerson has expanded AMS Device Manager with HART-IP™ support, making it easier to connect with devices and control systems and potentially eliminate hundreds of thousands of dollars in project hardware and engineering. AMS Device Manager is used by thousands of facilities across the globe to streamline installation of field devices during capital projects, increase safety system uptime, and quickly and safely test devices from the control room.
By eliminating multiplexers, organisations can more easily use AMS Device Manager to configure, calibrate, validate, and document more of their HART-enabled field devices and systems.

“Asset management systems help integrate data between field devices and systems, making them useful for other on-prem or off-prem IIoT software and analytics. With better plant data integration, organisations can take an early, significant step to enable digital transformation,” said Mani Janardhanan, vice president of product management for Emerson’s Plantweb and reliability solutions.

Connecting field devices to asset management systems typically requires the use of multiplexers that significantly increase hardware costs and engineering hours during the project phase. According to FieldComm Group™, more than 40 million field devices use HART, a protocol designed to allow intelligent devices to communicate with host systems. HART-IP—now native on AMS Device Manager—allows asset management systems to bypass complex and expensive multiplexers and directly access measurement and diagnostics information from HART-enabled field devices using existing plant Ethernet networking infrastructure.

The current interface has been tested for connectivity to Schneider Electric Triconex® Tricon CX safety systems, HIMA HIMax safety systems, and Phoenix Contact multiplexers. Emerson will continue to test and add new systems to the list of those officially supported by the interface.
