Ethernet-APL HART converter.

ProComSol's new Ethernet-APL HART Converter (HM-APL-PCB) has been released. Transmitter manufacturers can easily convert existing HART transmitters to the new Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer (APL) interface. The PCB can be customized to incorporate custom features or size requirements (see HART-APL-DEV). You can also quickly design “direct to APL” transmitters without using HART.

According to Jeffrey Dobos, President of ProComSol, Ltd, “Ethernet-APL is an exciting new technology. Manufacturers who want to add it to their product portfolio can now do it quickly and without high cost.”

The HM-APL-PCB consists of a ready to use PCB with a HART connector and an APL connector. Simply connect the HART transmitter to the HART connector and now the HART transmitter is an APL transmitter. The APL connection supplies all power needed for the PCB and the connected HART transmitter. Full documentation and support is included. ProComSol also offers full PCB customization capabilities, including board layout, to fit your existing HART transmitter enclosure.

The HART-IP protocol is used by the host system to configure and monitor the transmitter using Ethernet. Any HART-IP compliant host (such as ProComSol’s DevCom family of Apps) can access the APL transmitter via Ethernet through an APL Switch. No software development required.

The PCB can also be used as a baseline “direct to APL” design for new transmitters. The PCB supports various hardware peripherals such as Analog I/O, I2C, and SPI Flash memory so you can quickly prototype and demonstrate APL functions on a new transmitter without using HART. Again, full documentation and support is available along with customization services.

Detecting PCBs using RFID.

An RFID system in which PCBs communicate with their SMT production line and contain all the relevant manufacturing data has been developed by Harting. Based on the company’s RFID-4-SMT auto-ID solution, the new system cuts error rates, radically simplifies documentation requirements and forms the basis for automated PCB production in a batch size of one.

When the PCB is first produced, a small UHF RFID chip is inserted in the blank or attached as a component later on. From this point, manufacturing data can be written to and read from the RFID chip at each station in the manufacturing process. Even unplanned events such as machine malfunctions can be stored.

This is all enabled by the cutting-edge UHF RFID technology from Harting. Thanks to the coaxial-cable-based Ha-VIS LOCFIELD® antenna and the Ha-VIS RF-R350 flexible UHF RFID reader based on their MICA® industrial computing platform, realisation involves a minimum of effort. The antenna field follows a coaxial conductor and allows communication with several PCBs in a single PCB panel at full manufacturing speed.

The reader and antenna can easily be integrated into both new and old systems. The compact design and IP67 protection class also facilitate upgrading. Full data integration in the manufacturing system is therefore made possible - but not absolutely necessary - at any time.

Thanks to the modular and open software architecture of the Ha-VIS RF-R350 UHF RFID read-write device, the data can be pre-processed in the reader. The data is stored in line with ISO standards and the GS1 standards applied to commercial goods transport. This applies not only for the ID of the PCB itself, but also for the processing and manufacturing data stored in the user memory of the RFID chip. This data is all transparent and can thus easily be used later by a third party.

Once the UHF RFID technology has been fitted on the PCB, it can be used throughout the lifetime of the PCB. It is possible for several PCBs to be read in bulk without optical contact: for example, through foil and cardboard packaging, which makes the technology eminently suitable for warehouse and logistics processes. In addition, the information can also be read when the PCB is already installed in the application. Provided that the housing does not consist entirely of metal and certain basic physical principles are adhered to, the information on the RFID chip can continue to be used and updated. The options offered by the UHF RFID technology remain available until the PCB is disposed of, and can enable and improve a range of different applications.

Miniaturised PCB connectors.

The Harting har-flex® series of miniaturised PCB connectors are now available with pre-leading contacts which offer sequential switching that can protect sensitive electronics from damage during operational plugging and unplugging.

Thanks to their robustness, the miniaturised 1.27 mm-pitch har-flex® SMT connectors are seeing increasing use in modular electronic systems. End-users can often enhance their systems in the field by adding additional function modules or replacing existing modules. The har-flex® connectors guarantee a secure electrical connection between the main module board and smaller boards.

In the event that the user neglects to first switch off the system and consequently plugs it in under load, sensitive electronics can be damaged. To avoid this, Harting can now supply all angled har-flex® male connectors in two different contact lengths, allowing the production of connector types with pre-leading contacts.

These contacts are 0.3 mm longer in the mating face and ensure that grounding contacts are the first to make contact during insertion and the last to disconnect during unplugging.
Thanks to flexible contact loading, the angled male connectors can also be configured as variants with lagging contacts. During unplugging, these lose electrical contact before the other contacts, so that a system with the appropriate logic can detect imminent contact disconnection and execute certain functions such as data backup.

Harting is offering the angled male connectors with pin counts of 6-100 on request, in custom contact configurations. The new variants enable Harting to integrate even more intelligence at the field level and thereby enable appropriate solutions for Industry 4.0.

Strain gauge for PCB testing!

The Micro-Measurements® brand of Vishay Precision Group has announced the global market introduction of its S5198, a miniature rectangular planar rosette strain gage pattern for printed circuit board (PCB) testing, incorporating Advanced Sensors Technology.

PCB’s remain among the most essential components of today’s automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronic products. Industry trends continue toward the adoption of RoHS compliant assembly technologies, including lead-free soldering techniques. At the same time, next-generation manufacturing processes are calling for thinner board designs and newer laminate material types. Both trends have increased PCB failure risks, due to added potential for over-flexure in the manufacturing process. With many PCB assemblers operating under customer specified strain levels, any over-flexure can lead to interconnection damage, premature field failures and product returns. As a result, manufacturers are increasing supply chain requirements for PCB mechanical stability testing.

Offered in two unique strain gage designations (C5K-XX-S5198-350/33F and C5K-XX-S5198-350/39F), the Micro-Measurements S5198 pattern provides precise strain detection with minimized non-uniform PCA strain gradient effects, along with reliable operation to +200°C. An industry best-in-class resistance specification of 350 Ω, as compared to the 120 Ω typical industry standard, reduces the unwanted self-heating and heat dissipation effects commonly found among substrates with poor heat conductivity, such as PCB’s. A reduced overall footprint, with grid length of just 0.36 millimeters, facilitates ease of target board placement and integration. The S5198 pattern is further supported by pre-attached high-performance Teflon® insulated flexible thin cables, consisting of three twisted wires per grid. The wires are color coded, stripped and tinned for ease of PCB wire routing and connection to data acquisition systems. In addition to PCB testing, the pattern is suitable for ball grid array (BGA) component testing, spherical bend testing, mechanical shock testing, PCB flexures, and in-circuit testing (ICT). The S5198 is RoHS compliant and is utilized in accordance with IPC–JEDEC 9702, IPC–JEDEC 9704, and JEDEC JESD22-B111 standards.

The Micro-Measurements Advanced Sensors Technology portfolio includes linear, shear and circular strain gages, in individual, half- and full-bridge configurations and in ranges from 350 Ω to 20 kΩ, with added flexibility in mounting options. Application of this VPG proprietary technology improves grid-to-grid tolerances and matching over traditional strain gage manufacturing techniques, enabling better sensor performance. In the case of full-bridge gage configurations, all intra-bridge connections are integrated directly into the pattern itself, eliminating the need for traditional intra-bridge soldering. The addition of gold-plated solder pads improves solder-joint reliability, while reducing the risks of solder pad oxidation prior to lead wire attachment. These processes further ensure the close matching of grid-to-grid thermal characteristics and bridge circuit thermal output cancellation specifications, both of which are essential to strain gage measurement accuracy.
