Contactless charging and energy systems strengthens offer.

Contactless charging and energy systems for Autonomous Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Mobile Robots (Cobot) and Industrial Trucks etaLINK Inductive power systems available from 1kW to 36kW.

LtoR: Julian Seume, Bernhard Erdl
and  Matthieu Ebert (PULS Wireless)
PULS has acquired the business of wireless charging specialist Wiferion. Wiferion's technology will now be further enhanced by the capabilities of PULS, a technology-driven power conversion company based in Munich with a revenue of 250 million euros in 2022. Their customers will now benefit from a global presence in production and application support. The current operational Wiferion team will remain in Freiburg (D) as the PULS Wireless business unit.

PULS has taken over all existing contracts, trademark rights and patents of Wiferion but nothing will change in the operation of the business for customers. In the medium term, users will benefit from PULS' global manufacturing capacities. With its own modern production lines in the Czech Republic, China and Germany, large quantities of product can be produced in the highest quality and scaled up as required. In addition, PULS can procure more cost-effectively due to its purchasing volume and global sources, securing the supply chain and product life.

Synergies between Wiferion and PULS.
Both companies manufacture power electronics, where efficiency and reliability are key. Wireless power transmission is a special form of power supply where the transformer in a power supply is replaced by spatially separated coils. The similarity in technology will allow PULS developers to quickly familiarise themselves with Wiferion's products and topologies. And since PULS already has a strong presence in intralogistics, the wireless charging solutions are an excellent addition to the existing product portfolio and address a similar customer base.

"As a pioneer, Wiferion has successfully established inductive charging for the energy supply of mobile robots and forklifts in the market and gained a leading position. With the additional capabilities of PULS, we want to make this system the global market standard and will invest significantly for this purpose," says Bernhard Erdl, Managing Director and Owner of PULS GmbH.

"PULS employs more than 100 of the best developers in the industry and has global production and sales locations that take our charging technology and scalability to a new level," enthuses Julian Seume, former CSO of Wiferion, who together with Matthieu Ebert forms the management team of the PULS Wireless Business Unit. "In the area of new product development and application support, we are now in a much stronger position and can offer our customers an even better service."

Acquisition expands wireless reach

Wireless reach expanded with acquisition of portfolio of cellular routers and gateways

B&B Electronics  has deepened its wireless solution portfolio with the acquisition of Conel s.r.o. (CZ) Conel is a well-established market leader in reliable and secure wireless communications routers, gateways and devices that connect cellular networks to Ethernet, serial and other data networks.

The acquisition further expands B&B’s European footprint, as well as strengthens B&B’s position in the fast-growing wireless market by extending its reach into cellular communications networks. In 2011, B&B acquired Quatech, Inc., an industrial networking company with a complementary product line that included an industrial-grade embedded OEM wireless technology platform sold under the Airborne brand name.

“The Quatech and Conel acquisitions are consistent with our strategy of rapidly growing our market share and deepening our technology solutions,” explained Seán Harrigan, B&B’s president and CEO. “As our industry continues to consolidate, we plan to remain aggressive in seeking out a wide range of opportunities that will strengthen our position, product breadth and the value we bring to our customers.”

Conel, founded in 1991, employs approximately 73 people in its Czech facility, where it designs market leading products. Conel’s European customer base is diverse, covering applications in wastewater, construction, fleet and vehicle management, pipeline monitoring and electric grid asset monitoring.

“Conel brings a wide variety of advantages to B&B’s customers,” added Harrigan. “It has built a strong brand in Europe with products that quickly have become known for rugged reliability. Its product roadmap will provide several exciting extensions of our own technology into the wireless solutions that are proving so important to many of our customers.”

Harrigan said the company will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of B&B Electronics, and company Managing Director Jan Cevona will continue with B&B as Managing Director. Harrigan said the companies will work together to secure the necessary industry approvals and certifications to bring Conel’s product technology to North American customers.

Conel is known for extensive product breadth in this sector, with strong product offerings for GPRS, EDGE, UMTS / HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, CDMA protocols in its current line of modems and routers. Conel’s rapid growth rate in Europe also has been tied a customer-centric strategy of providing strong local support and a Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA) technology that allows its products to receive automatic wireless firmware updates without requiring an on-site technician visit. In an approach similar to B&B’s product philosophy, Conel’s products are designed with an emphasis on “plug-and-play” user convenience and simplicity, with a built-in SIM recognition driver in the router that recognizes the unit and configures the internal cellular modem automatically, making integration simpler for customers.

New products to strengthen RF design & test

In a second announcement National Instruments has announced that it has signed a definitive merger agreement under which they will acquire AWR Corporation (AWR).

AWR is a leading supplier of electronic design automation (EDA) software for designing RF and high-frequency components and systems for the semiconductor, aerospace and defense, communications and test equipment industries. Upon the closing of the transaction, AWR will continue to operate as a wholly owned NI subsidiary under the leadership of the existing management team.

The fast design cycles and increasing complexity of RF and wireless systems demand better integration between design and test. RF system designers need to validate their simulations with actual measurements, while RF test engineers need to increase test reuse and decrease test time through more design integration. By increasing the effectiveness of the integration between AWR design tools and NI software and hardware, NI and AWR together can significantly improve customer productivity through increased connectivity between design, validation and production test functions.

“AWR has an exceptional team with strong RF talent and technologies that expand the NI platform into RF design, which is complementary to our capability to make measurements across the RF design flow,” said Dr. James Truchard, president, CEO and cofounder of National Instruments. “We believe this combination will accelerate the deployment of RF and wireless technologies and offers a significant benefit to the customers of both companies.”

Both NI and AWR deliver unique strengths that together will enable customers to more productively design and test their RF systems. The acquisition will strengthen both companies’ core software brands, NI LabVIEW, AWR Microwave Office and Visual System Simulator, as well as the NI RF testing hardware platform. The full suite of AWR design tools in combination with a complete RF testing platform from NI will give customers a platform to decrease the time to market of their RF designs. NI will also augment its current academic and university RF and communications initiatives to include AWR software tools, so educators and students can benefit from the improved teaching and learning experience for the rapid design and prototyping of RF systems.

“There is clear synergy between the customers and product offerings of both companies,” said Dane Collins, CEO of AWR. “NI has a leading platform in prototyping and testing of RF systems which is complementary to AWR’s RF circuit and system software design tools to the benefit of mutual customers. Together, we are better able to support and service our growing global installed base.”
