A healthier workplace for operators.

90% of human-error related accidents in the oil and gas sector can be attributed to the working environment, study shows.

Despite being mission critical for much of the world’s energy infrastructures and industries, the ambience of control rooms is often overlooked with many facilities outdated or not suitable for keeping operators alert at all times. ABB has launched its Operator Wellbeing Service (OWS), a digital solution that focuses on delivering optimal industrial control room worker environments and conditions.

The OWS solution is designed to deliver safe, smart, and sustainable operations by enabling plant owners to investigate and measure air quality and noise levels in real time, ensure lighting is ambient and meets current standards, and manage temperatures to help maintain employee focus and alertness.

ARC Advisory Group estimates that 40 percent of global process industry losses due to unscheduled downtime are related directly to human error1, while a study published by the International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics identifies that the working environment is the main human factor in 90 percent of accident cases in the oil and gas industry2.

Building upon ABB’s leadership in control room design, furniture and equipment innovation, OWS helps ensure a healthier workplace for operators as well as improved plant performance and safety.

Operator wellbeing is the key success factor for productive and reliable operations. Human factors form a fundamental foundation of the control room solution. When operators are happier, more alert, less stressed and much safer, the result is better decision making and less downtime.

“Adverse working conditions are known to exacerbate fatigue or distraction,” said Ulf Engberg, General Manager of Control Room Solutions at ABB Energy Industries. “OWS addresses this, delivering live data to managers enabling them to monitor working conditions and make necessary changes accordingly. Additionally, it ensures that plant owners will always comply with ISO 11064 standards.”

Pre-built application supports.

Pre-built applications make it easy to utilize CC BACnet/IP and MS/TP Sedona Unitary controllers in constant volume air-handling, fan coil, and heat pump applications.

The Contemporary Controls' BASpi-Edge controller (with 6UI/4 relay/2 analogue out) can now, with the development a new pre-built application, FCU3, be made into a configurable controller for 2-pipe or 4-pipe fan coil applications. The BASPI-E6U4R2A is a hardened, cloud connected BACnet controller that is powered by Raspberry Pi, with enhanced features and data processing at the Edge.

Like our other pre-built apps, FCU3 is available as a free download from the website and comes with supporting documentation. Using the BAScontrol Toolset, a systems integrator can modify the sequence and the underlying control code to meet the needs of the application. Once developed and tested, a complete project backup can be made using BASbackup.

One of the most common HVAC applications is the fan coil. The FCU applications support a 20-point controller, a 22-point controller, and now the BASpi-Edge 12-point cloud connected controller. The supply fan can be single speed, multi-speed, or variable speed. Dependent upon the piping, the fan coil can be dedicated to either chilled water cooling or hot water heating, or simultaneous heating and cooling. There is a choice of modulating or staged heating/cooling up to two stages. An output exists for binary ventilation control.

Contemporary Controls also offers pre-built apps for constant volume air handlers and constant volume heat pumps.

Constant volume air handlers.
The constant volume CvRTU series of pre-built applications has been replaced with a new CvAHU series which includes three new macros—Staged Heat/Cool, Wall Setter, and Economizer. The targeted constant volume applications have not changed.

Constant volume heat pumps.
There are four possible applications. Three apps support the 22-point controllers, and the fourth supports a 20-point controller. All are intended for a single-speed supply fan. The exhaust port can be barometric, powered, or none at all. There is a single stage of DX heating or cooling. For colder climates, auxiliary heating can be produced with modulating or dual-staged heating. An output exists for binary ventilation control.

Significant energy savings using harvesting wireless devices.

EnOcean is making a significant impact in the fight against climate change. Through its innovative energy harvesting wireless technology, EnOcean is saving over 1.4 million tons of CO2 emissions annually, preventing this harmful greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere. This achievement is made possible as EnOcean's technology is now connecting smart-building systems in more than one million premises worldwide.

In collaboration with SET Ventures, EnOcean has quantified the energy savings achieved by their devices, which result in an average reduction of approximately 15% in a building's energy consumption. Currently, EnOcean's products manage an impressive 221 million square meters of floorspace which equals around 74,000 football fields. As EnOcean continues to supply more sensors to the market, these annual savings are expected to grow even further.

"Reducing our energy demand is critical for transitioning to renewable sources and combating climate change. Buildings are responsible for 40% of global energy consumption, as reported by Forbes," emphasized Armin Anders, co-founder & VP Business Development at EnOcean. "Smart HVAC and power control are cost-effective measures that can significantly contribute to this cause. Products like ours, which allow us to eliminate unnecessary energy consumption, represent quick and affordable wins compared to extensive infrastructure investments."

EnOcean's wireless building-automation products operate on the principle of energy harvesting, drawing power from their surroundings, such as motion, light, and temperature differences. This eliminates the need for batteries and power cords. EnOcean supports various wireless standards, including Bluetooth, Zigbee, and the optimized EnOcean radio protocol. The product range includes kinetic switches, self-powered sensors, gateways, actuators, configuration tools, and the SmartServer IoT edge device. These products seamlessly integrate into existing Wi-Fi access points from Aruba Networks, simplifying installations without requiring complex cabling or additional gateways.

The products communicate with heating, air conditioning, and lighting, monitor occupancy and people flow, and allow settings to be automatically adjusted for optimum user convenience while saving energy. Because of their battery-free and maintenance-free nature, they eliminate the necessity for regular servicing and battery replacements, ensuring continuous, reliable performance and contributing significantly to reducing electronic waste and operational disruptions. Furthermore, their easy installation stems from the wireless, self-powered nature of the devices, which mitigates the need for complex cabling and power source setups, allowing for straightforward, eco-friendly integration into any building infrastructure using a “Peel & Stick” approach.

The significance of EnOcean's energy-efficient solutions is underscored by the impending Buildings Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz, GEG 2024), the new German legislation set to take effect on January 1, 2024. This legislation places significant emphasis on building automation in non-residential buildings as part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from buildings. In alignment with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which aims to achieve carbon-neutral building operation by 2050 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, the GEG 2024 highlights the need for energy controls and self-regulating devices for room temperature control in buildings with over 290 kW of heating or cooling power.

Wired or wireless thermostats.

The BASstat BACnet-compliant1 wired or wireless communicating thermostats provide turnkey integration into BACnet/IP (Wi-Fi) or BACnet MS/TP (EIA-485) networks.

The BASstat has four configurable temperature setpoints: Occupied Heat, Occupied Cool, Unoccupied Heat, and Unoccupied Cool. Only the currently active setpoint is displayed on the BASstat LCD panel during normal operation. This active setpoint can be adjusted directly by pressing the UP/DOWN buttons on the control panel.

However, the inactive Occupied Heat or Occupied Cool setpoint cannot be adjusted from the BASstat control panel. The inactive Occupied mode must be activated using the MODE button, then it can be adjusted using the UP/DOWN buttons on the control panel. For example, if the BASstat is in Occupied Heating mode, the Occupied Heating temperature setpoint can be adjusted on the control panel; but the Occupied Cooling mode cannot be viewed or set until the BASstat operating MODE is changed over to Occupied Cooling.

The Unoccupied Cooling setpoint (ESIC) and Unoccupied Heating setpoint (ESIH) can be read and adjusted at the control panel via the Engineering Menu at any time. All setpoints can also be set directly from the BACnet supervisor controller or from the BACnet Discovery Tool (BDT) to the BASstat at any time it is reachable on the network, irrespective of the operating mode.

The BASstat's internal temperature measuring thermistor maintains an accuracy of +/- 1.8°F (+/- 1.0°C). If any temperature offset adjustments are necessary, it is best practice to wait at least 30 minutes after powering up the BASstat before making any adjustments from either BACnet point AV15 or the OFSt command from the Engineering Menu.

In order for the BASstat to accept remote BACnet temperature and setpoint data input from a Building Management System (BMS), the BASstat must receive a timed pulse (heartbeat) from the BMS supervisor "head-end" during an established time interval. This minimum interval (Heartbeat Rate) is set at BACnet point AV29. This pulse (a data "1") needs to be received at BACnet point BV16 during this interval for the BASstat to maintain communication of the head-end's control output data (occupancy, setpoints, temperature data, etc.) If a new heartbeat pulse is not received before the last one times out, the BASstat will assume that the head-end supervisor is offline and use only locally measured data. This AV29 interval can be set to any rate between 10 to 3600 seconds (default setting is 10s). It is best practice to have the head-end send out this pulse to BV16 at a rate 2x-3x the AV29 interval. For example, if the AV29 interval is set to 240 seconds, it would be a good idea to send out the BV16 pulse between 90-120 seconds. This can compensate for possible delayed or missed network communication. This is especially important when working with BACnet/IP over Wi-Fi.

Keeping data centres cool.

Around 60% of a data centre’s energy requirements are driven by its IT infrastructure, so there are energy reduction opportunities in (usually new) equipment that is more energy efficient. However, there are good opportunities for energy efficiency in the other 40% of energy demand; the majority of which comes from a data centre’s cooling and air-conditioning systems. In many data centres 99.999% uptime is expected; representing annual downtime of just a few minutes, so accurate, reliable, continuous monitoring and control is essential. Here Anu Kätkä from Vaisala* explains what must be measured, and where.

Anu Kätkä
Data centre owners and managers are acutely aware of the need for better energy efficiency. With responsibility for around 1% of global electricity consumption, the sector is heavily affected by turbulence in energy costs, so there is a very strong demand for energy efficiency. At the same time, governments around the world are looking to energy hungry industries for opportunities to reduce the use of fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Efficient temperature and humidity control is important for the optimal functioning of IT infrastructure. In many modern facilities 99.999% uptime is expected; representing annual downtime of just a few minutes. These extremely high levels of performance are necessary because of the importance and value of the data and processes being handled by the IT infrastructure.

In common with all good process efficiency measures, effective energy management relies on the availability of accurate, reliable, continuous monitoring data.

So, for data centres, what must be measured? and where?

Temperature.
Cooling and air conditioning is necessary to remove the heat generated by IT equipment; to avoid over-heating and prevent failures. It is therefore necessary to monitor temperature in the aisles and racks, as well as in all spaces, ducts in the ventilation system, cooling system pipes, and outdoors. Naturally, it is vital that the measurement locations are truly representative and that the network of sensors is able to detect any potential cold- or hot-spots.

Using HMT120
Larger data halls can be more challenging to monitor because they have a greater potential for spatial temperature variability, so it is important that there are sufficient numbers of temperature sensors to ensure that all servers are monitored. Some servers may be close to a cooling unit and others may be further away; some may be at the bottom of a rack, and others higher up, so there is potential for three-dimensional variability. In addition to a sufficient number of sensors, it is also therefore important for air flow and cooling to be optimally distributed throughout the server room.

Most data centres will need to monitor ‘delta T’ – which is commonly defined as the temperature difference between hot and cold aisles. However, in reality, the situation is more complex because there are actually four different delta Ts (1) that need to be monitored if cooling operations are to be as efficient as possible.

The most obvious delta T is the temperature difference in air before and after it passes through the IT equipment. The second frequently measured delta T is the temperature difference across the cooling equipment. However, in reality, the temperature of the air leaving the coolers is rarely the same as the air arriving at the IT equipment. This is usually because of issues such as obstructions, vortices, pressure differentials, air pockets etc. that cause cold air and warm air to mix. Similarly, the temperature of the air leaving the IT equipment is frequently cooler by the time it enters the coolers. This is usually because cooled air mixes with the warmed air for a variety of reasons; all of which indicate inefficiency in air flow management.

So, the four delta Ts are the temperature differences:

  1. Before and after the IT equipment
  2. Before and after the coolers
  3. Between air leaving the coolers and air entering the IT equipment
  4. Between air leaving the IT equipment and air entering the coolers

By accurately monitoring these four delta Ts, data centre managers can gain a better understanding of the factors affecting cooling inefficiency, which can then inform mitigation and improvement measures to fine tune data centre performance.

HMD Series
In dry climates evaporative cooling is effective at dissipating heat. In cold climates direct cooling with dry, cold air can be used. In recent years, liquid cooling solutions have become popular because they are more effective at removing heat. To support this trend, Vaisala has developed a new high-quality sensor for measuring cooling / heating liquid temperatures. The Vaisala TMI110 is an immersion temperature transmitter offering a fast response with high levels of accuracy. TMI110 is an addition to the extensive HVAC product offering, including e.g. the ever-popular HMD60 for air ducts, HMT120 for indoor air measurements, and state of the art Indigo platform for most precise measurements in data centres.

Humidity.
IT equipment can also be adversely affected by humidity; low levels increase the risk of static electricity, so spray or evaporative humidifiers may be necessary. However, high levels of humidity are also to be avoided because they can result in condensation, and the corrosion of metallic equipment.

In cooler climates it may be possible to utilize colder outside air to cool data centre equipment in a process known as economization. The absolute water content of this outside air may be low, and since the relative humidity of air decreases when it is heated, the humidity level may fall below acceptable levels unless appropriate controls are in place.

Different types of humidity measurement are required, depending on the location and application. For example, relative humidity and dew point can be measured in rooms, spaces, ducts and outdoors, whereas wet bulb temperatures would be necessary in cooling towers and evaporative humidifiers, and enthalpy sensors may be required for airside economizers. Enthalpy expresses the total heat energy (sensible heat and latent heat) involved with thermodynamic changes. These calculated humidity parameters are typically available directly from advanced humidity sensors, such as Vaisala’s.

The three most common sensor configurations for airside economizer control are dry bulb, single enthalpy, and dual enthalpy. While dry bulb control is the simplest method, it may miss potential energy savings by not opening the economizer when the ambient temperature is slightly warmer but relatively dry.

Dual enthalpy works in a similar way, except that two enthalpy sensors are employed; one monitoring outdoor air, and the other return air. The economizer will run if the outdoor air enthalpy is less than the return enthalpy.

Vaisala’s transmitters are designed specifically for applications such as air conditioning and economization; measuring humidity and temperature, with derived outputs for dew point, wet bulb temperature and enthalpy. Temperature measurements do not generally suffer from drift, but traditional humidity sensors do, so Vaisala’s humidity sensors employ HUMICAP® technology which delivers long-term stability and insensitivity to interferences such as dust and condensation. These thin-film capacitive humidity sensors have become the industry standard in a wide variety of applications where long-term accurate, reliable, maintenance-free humidity measurements are required.

Air flow in ducts allow sensors to respond quickly to changing conditions, whereas air movement in rooms and other spaces can be slow, so some data centres prefer to use dew point temperature as a humidity control parameter because it does not depend on the temperature of the sensor.

WXT530
Other sensors that may be deployed at data centres measure differential pressure in ducts and between hot and cold aisles, as well as additional outdoor meteorological parameters such as air pressure, rainfall, wind speed and direction. These measurements can be undertaken by an automatic weather station, by individual sensors, or by one of Vaisala’s WXT530 instruments, which utilize solid state technologies to minimize operating and maintenance costs. Outdoor sensors should be placed in a location with free airflow, away from any surfaces that might radiate heat and disturb measurements. Naturally, outdoor measurements must be as accurate and reliable as indoor measurements, so Vaisala’s world-leading meteorological instruments provide the long-term reliability that is required in even the harshest environments.

Summary.
Investments in accurate, stable measurement systems are negligible in comparison with the value of the systems and information held by data centres. Add the financial and environmental costs of energy inefficiency to the equation, and you have a hugely compelling case for a comprehensive monitoring and control system utilising the most accurate and reliable sensors.

Re-starting of business in Ukraine.

Business activities are being re-started in Ukraine by Danfoss. Since the war in Ukraine broke out, activities have been put to a halt, and the restarted business activities will be focused on restoring critical infrastructure in damaged cities and towns. A warehouse of the company itself was reported to have been hit by ordinance in early March but no injuries were reported.

Adam Jedrzejczak
, President, Danfoss East Europe Region, says: “It is key for us to continue supporting our customers in Ukraine. It is not only the right thing to do, but our products are also key components for the critical infrastructure which needs to be rebuilt. Thanks to Danfoss’s products, residents in some of the most badly damaged areas of Ukraine will again have access to heating and hot domestic water.”

Most Ukrainian employees decided to stay in Ukraine, but families were evacuated by the Danfoss crisis team in February. As the safety level in most parts of Ukraine is improving, employees are starting to move back. Currently, 40 Ukrainians – including 8 Danfoss employees– are in Poland. Other colleagues and family members have been safely moved elsewhere. Currently there are 16 Ukrainians in Germany, 6 in Denmark, 4 in Spain, 3 in Slovakia and, 2 in Austria. All evacuated employees and their families are relatively well, and Danfoss continues to be in close contact with all families, both the evacuated families and those remaining in Ukraine.

Ukraine remains an important market for Danfoss in the Eastern European region. According to The Kyiv School of Economics the cost of direct damage to Ukraine's infrastructure has already reached the level of ca €60 billion (US$63b). Therefore, solutions such as those provided by Danfoss are critical as they have a positive impact in the rebuilding of district energy infrastructure, commercial and residential buildings as well as water and wastewater treatment utilities.

Andriy Berestyan

"The safety and security of our team remains our key priority, and despite uncertainties, it has been key for Danfoss to resume business activities in the country as quickly as possible. For now, customers can pick-up their products at a so-called cross-docking warehouse that we have established in the city of Lviv."

General Manager in Danfoss Ukraine, Andriy Berestyan, working out of Lviv, says: “Our team in Ukraine is eager to come back to their work. They want to play their part in rebuilding their home country. They are extremely motivated, and Danfoss’ products are important to help rebuild our country’s infrastructure.”

VFD manufacturer drives ahead!

Invertek Drives is expanding following significant growth in global sales.said the investment will create an expansion to its global variable frequency drive (VFD) manufacturing and distribution centre, along with the development of a new Application Centre.

It will create 85 new jobs over the next 12 months on top of the 280 people already employed at the global HQ in Mid Wales and follows a major recruitment drive over the past year in both its production and research and development departments.

The company designs and manufacturers VFDs used for the accurate control of electric motors used in many applications and industries globally. These range from conveyors to CNC machines, HVAC and ventilation systems, to water pumping applications

The VFDs are also major contributors to creating energy savings and reducing associated CO2 emissions in processes by making electric motors more efficient, cutting energy use by between 30% and 50% in many cases. They control the speed of motors, pumps and fans, ensuring they operate at optimum speeds.

They control the speed of motors, pumps and fans, ensuring they operate at optimum speeds.

Shaun Dean, CEO of Invertek Drives, and who is also Senior Vice President of Sumitomo Heavy Industries and CEO of Power Transmission and Controls Group (EMEIA Business HQ), said: “We’ve seen significant growth in sales and turnover over the past 18 months despite the global pandemic.

“Invertek’s approach to maintaining strategic stock of components has ensured we’ve been able to continue manufacturing our Optidrive range of VFDs despite the global supply chain problems currently facing many manufacturers.

“We continues to commit to investing heavily in the innovation, development and manufacturing of VFD technology. The expanded manufacturing facility will allow us to increase production from 350,000 units a year to 600,000.

“This is part of our drive to create the leading next generation VFD technology that will help to further reduce energy use and associated CO2 emissions globally.

We will add three new production lines each consisting of six Global Assembly Cells (GACS) allowing the increase in production."

Around eight billion electric motors consume nearly 50 per cent of the electricity produced in Europe. Globally, 40 per cent of electricity is used to power industry, with two-thirds of this used by electric motors. And yet less than 20 per cent of electric motors are controlled by VFDs.
