Testing fabric tension.

Fabric tension testing guarantees the fabric being used on furniture frames meets the high quality needed for durability, comfort and support. Having the incorrect fabric tension can lead to fabric tearing, poor posture support, visually poor fabric quality and a corresponding loss of customer satisfaction and a decrease in sales and profit.

Different shapes, fabrics and styles of furniture meant two main problems.
1. No starting point of where to apply the force.
2. No consistent reference point to measure from.

Trent Thermal Technology needed to create an advanced universal fabric tension tester. To measure both fabric tension and fabric movement, even on different styles of furniture framework and fabrics.

DBBSMM accurate miniature s-beam load cell
They found that the DBBSMM miniature s-beam load cell from Applied Measurements,  was the ideal choice. Standing at only 35mm high, it was easily able to fit between the domed surface contact pad and the deflection load

Calibrated to UKAS traceable standards with an Intuitive4 load cell indicator, it was able to offset the pad weight and triggers, with less than 3 grams of force. Thanks to its high precision, the miniature s-beam load cell indicated the vertical force being applied within ±0.03% accuracy.

Plus, the miniature s-beam load cell acted as a pressure sensitive re-set switch for an industrial LVDT displacement transducer, which was used to monitor the deflection of the fabric under a pre-determined load.

On initial contact with the fabric, the output from the Intuitive4 load cell indicator triggered a secondary input to an AML/IE displacement transducer, which “zeroed” the movement range. As the weight found its natural resting position, the distance between the first point of contact and the final resting position was displayed (in mm) on an Intuitive4 lite process panel meter.

IP65 Air tight
Constructed from stainless steel, the AML/IE industrial displacement transducer has a dust-tight IP65 protection rating as standard, making it safe to use even in this high fibrous environment. We can also offer high temperature and fully submersible versions to IP68 rating to suit you.

Thanks to our industrial LVDT’s wide range of configuration options, the displacement transducer was able to be tailored to their exact application. Plus, its friction-free operation means it has an incredibly maintenance-free, long operating life.

Both the miniature s-beam load cell and the industrial LVDT were calibrated with Intuitive4 digital indicators to UKAS traceable standards, certifying their traceability to strict national standards.  The Intuitive4 digital indicators offer superior resolution and outstanding accuracy thanks to their 20 bit A/D converter and 10 point linearisation.  Plus, with their modular construction, you only pay for what you need, saving you money from your already tight budget.

These Intuitive4 digital indicators were housed in a PCC2 desktop enclosure for a portable, neatly styled and robust, on-site desktop monitoring setup. The PCC enclosures are available in different formats that are able to house up to 12 individual panel meters with custom enclosures available for greater quantities if your application demands it.

Load cells under water.

The EPICTidal Team consisting of Lab-Sea-Systems Dr Florent Trarieux, Cranfield University’s Dr Joao Amaral-Teixeira and Nick Barlow, Managing Director of Designcraft Ltd (Blade designer and manufacturer) wanted to know the performance implications of employing lower cost methods for the manufacture of large scale tidal turbine rotors. Lowering the cost of rotor blade manufacture would make this renewable energy more economical to use and widely accessible, benefiting all tidal energy markets throughout the world.

To assess the rotor blade performance they developed a submersible tidal turbine test rig incorporating 2 x DDEN load cells from Applied Measurements. The rotor blade design to be tested was coupled to the tidal turbine test rig and placed in a state-of-the-art test tank, where the team were able to increase the size, flow rate and turbulence levels within the tank. The first DDEN load cell measured the torque and the other measured the thrust of the tidal rotor design.

“The DDEN were ideal to use in this application as they are fully submersible up to 10 metres” explained Bob Davies, Applied Measurements’ Production Director.

The DDEN in-line submersible load cells are low profile and very compact and designed to measure both tension and compression underwater. They come with an IP68 rating and are sealed using ‘O’ rings to guarantee integrity during long term submersion. Their IP68 rating and ‘O’ ring sealing makes them ideal to use underwater or in areas at risk of flooding. The DDEN submersible load cell comes in capacities from 0-250N up to 50kN with customised capacities, threads and dimensions on request, as well as versions rated to greater submersion depths in seawater, oil and other more aggressive media.

For this submersible application the DDEN load cells were fitted with 10 metres of submersible 4-core screened polyurethane cable for complete submersible protection underwater. They have a guaranteed accuracy to <±0.15% of the rated capacity (0.05% typical) enabling precise thrust and torque blade measurements which was crucial to this renewable energy application.

A small ICA6H amplifier was fitted within the bodies of both the DDEN submersible load cells. At only 19mm diameter this amplifier is ideal for fitting inside the body of a load cell. An ICA6H amplifier was used in this application so it could easily fit within the load cell, maintaining the submersible protection needed for underwater testing. The ICA6H load cell amplifier delivered a high-level ±10Vdc analogue output, for use with their data acquisition and control systems.

Other outputs are available for the DDEN including 0-5Vdc, 0-10Vdc or 4-20mA, which can be used with many data acquisition and control systems. For a digital output, a DCell load cell digitiser can be used instead of an ICA to deliver a RS485 digital output.

LCI Junction Box.

The intelligent LCI junction box from Applied Measurements, delivers continuous enhanced load cell alarm and fault monitoring for up to 4 load cells. This instant and constant fault monitoring means problems are detected immediately, increasing production safety and limiting costly downtime.

For multi-load cell applications it monitors each load cell independently and tells which load cell has a fault and exactly what the fault is. This allows switching out the faulty load cell quickly for fast repairs and also prevents batch wastage and overflow due to undetected load cell and cable faults.
How this junction box promises to save money!
1. Continuous Monitoring of Individual Load Cells
2. Immediate Alarm Activation when Faults Detected
3. Instant Fault Diagnostics
4. Increased Safety
5. Equipment Failure Downtime Reduced
6. Avoids Batch Wastage and Overflow
7. 5V Supply Option = Lower Power Consumption
This junction box not only continually monitors the load cells it also acts as a summing junction box, summing the connected load cells. The number of load cells may be selected easily on the display.

It doesn't come with any power connections as it uses the same excitation supply of the connected load cells. Plus, it now supports both 5V and 10V supply requiring even less power from the connected load cell.

The red 4 digit LED display shows which load cell is at fault and why.
When the system is functioning correctly the red 4 digit LED display shows "good". If an error is detected the display shows a code telling you which load cell is at fault and what the fault is.

There is an alarm LED on the LCI junction box board that lights up when a fault is detected in the system. There is also a relay output to drive an alarm to quickly alert engineers to a fault with the system.

How to Improve Aerodynamics with single point load cells and digital indicators.

Challenge – To Evaluate the Aerodynamics of Scale Models
Scale Engineering design and manufacture wind tunnels, industrial test rigs and research equipment for schools, universities and the commercial sector.  Their newly designed Scale Wind Tunnel can test the aerodynamics of scale models using the same principles as a full sized version, without the need for a huge test laboratory.  Recently used at Purbeck School’s Science Fair, the Scale Wind Tunnel uses two single point load cells and Intuitive2-L digital indicators, from Applied Measurements,  enabling students to evaluate, amend and improve their LEGO model design.
How Does It Work?
The Scale Wind Tunnel has two OBUG-5kg single point load cells fixed at 90˚ to each other installed on a base plate inside the tunnel.  Once the scale model is mounted inside the tunnel, the air is forced into the tunnel through the laminar air intake and along a honeycomb structure to decrease the air turbulence.  As the tunnel narrows, the airspeed increases, allowing one OBUG single point load cell to measure the lift force and the other to measure the drag force (the resistance generated by the model inside the tunnel).  The results are relayed to two separate Intuitive2-L digital indicators for analysis, enabling the students to make necessary adjustments to their design.

OBU Single Point Compression Load Cells
  • Dual Cantilever Design
  •  IP65 Protection Rating as Standard (IP67 Optional)
  • High Accuracy <±0.03% of Rated Capacity
  • Sense Wire Facility
  • Moment Insensitive
  • Aluminium Construction – Light Weight and Low Cost
  • Customisation Available
  • Optional Integration on Finished Weighing Platform
Their range of OBU single point load cells are extremely resistant to off-centre loading thanks to their dual cantilever design.  They are moment insensitive meaning that only one unit is required centrally positioned to make a weighing system, or, as in the case of Scale Engineering, allows them to be used in tandem to create a dual-axis measurement system with minimal crosstalk.  This makes them incredibly cost-effective and ideal for applications where a low cost is essential.  Our single point load cells have an IP65 protection rating with an option to increase to IP67 on some capacities if you need them for an even harsher environment.  Their common uses include low force measurement applications such as manufacturing, testing, research and development such as the Scale Wind Tunnel application.  Their aluminium construction makes them very lightweight, while still delivering highly stable and accurate results to <±0.03% of the rated capacity.

Intuitive2-L Load Cell Digital Indicators
  •  6 Digit Display
  • Simple and Easy to Use – No-Menu Programming
  • IP65 Protection Rating
  • 20-Bit A/D Converter
  • Can Power up to Four 350Ω Strain Gauge Load Cells
  • Modular Construction
  • Variety of Display Colour Options

The Intuitive2-L digital indicators are easy to use and simple to set-up giving you a fast effortless installation.  The 4 panel buttons, on-display prompts and no-menu programming really does mean you can quickly and easily calibrate and install the digital indicator straight into your application for immediate use.  The display also has a 10Vdc excitation supply which can power up to four 350 Ohm load cells giving you a versatile complete monitoring system.  Its modular construction means you can configure the Intuitive2-L digital indicator to match your needs, making it unique to you and your application.

The indicator’s bright 6-digit LED display offers superb resolution and stability all thanks to its fantastic 20-bit A/D converter and highly stable strain gauge bridge excitation source.  The Intuitive2-L digital indicator is IP65 protection rated and comes with a variety of digit colour options to suit your application environment.  For example, to easily differentiate the lift force and the drag force results the Scale Wind Tunnel used one indicator with a red display and the other green.  We chose the Intuitive2-L digital indicator because of its modular construction and variety of optional alarm relays, analogue and digital outputs, enabling the Intuitive2-L to be tailored to the exact specification of the Scale Wind Tunnel.
