Ultra high purity transducer.

The WUD-2x-E model is a particularly compact, ultra high purity transducer for high-accuracy pressure measurement of ultrapure gases in the semiconductor industry from WIKA. It is the first transducer to use the SDP 5003.2080 and offers maximum security of investment.

Due to minimal signal noise, the sensor provides precise measured values in the long term. Thanks to active temperature compensation, even with high temperature fluctuations. The measured values can be viewed on the display.

Thanks to EtherCAT®, the model WUD-2x-E does not have to be disconnected from the network for firmware updates or troubleshooting. This avoids production downtime due to incorrect installation or removal, maximises process safety and allows updating of the instruments.

In addition to pressure values, temperature data or error status can also be transmitted. Instruments can thus be monitored extensively and problems detected at an early stage.

Current measurement at trackside.

LEM has introduced a new current transducer series, ideal for retrofitting trackside applications or for reducing the cost of new installations. Due to its robust design and standardized 4-20 mA out, it can also be used in automation or the control of PV-plants. The transducer’s innovative primary circuit (patent pending), in combination with two ASiCs to detect the magnetic field, enables precise current measurement.

The HTRS-series will be available in three current ranges (10 A / 30 A / 50 A), with peak current measurement up to twice that of nominal. Despite the very high insulation test voltage of 6.0 kV, the HTRS-series is compact, measuring 72 mm x 29 mm x 26 mm. The HTRS series also offers very good temperature stability, while mounting adapters allow the unit to be installed in existing applications.

The transducer complies with the International Railway Industry Standards (IRIS). With the HTRS, users in the field of railway technology have a versatile series of sensors at their disposal, regardless of whether they work in the field of rail or signalling technology. The HTRS series is suitable for measuring currents in point machines, crossing gates and signalling systems. It can also be used in industrial applications, such as process automation or DC current collection in solar parks.

A split core design offers a very high overall accuracy of 2% at +25 °C and high temperature stability in the operating temperature range between -40 and +85 °C. The HTRS has a measuring frequency bandwidth ( -3 dB point) of 1 kHz and also offers a fast response time of 10 μs at 90% of the rated current. The current consumption at maximum primary current is less than 50 mA at a supply voltage of +12 VDC or +24 VDC.

Thanks to the primary circuit the maximum deviation caused by neighbouring conductors with the same current is only around 0.3% (typical). The positioning error of the primary conductor is negligibly small compared to previous solutions.

Weighing only 35 g, the transducer is more than 70% lighter than previous split core current transducers for such applications. Other performance features include compliance with various internationally recognized railway standards as well as IRIS specifications.

The current sensor has been designed to the latest standards for railway technology and industry, including UL and UKCE,and is based on materials that meet all relevant fire protection requirements for railway applications. A CE certificate is available and, like all LEM current transducers for railway applications, the HTRS series comes with a LEM warranty of five years.

Vacuum transducer evaluation kit.

An evaluation kit for the Posifa Technologies PVC4000 series of digital MEMS Pirani vacuum transducer is now available. This promises to disrupt the portable vacuum gauge market by enabling low-cost, easily replaceable sensor probes that can be switched without requiring the vacuum gauge itself to be recalibrated, since all the calibration data is stored within the probe itself.

The PVC4000EVK evaluation kit announced today allows OEMs to quickly test drive Posifa's MEMS vacuum sensing technology for digital vacuum gauge and related applications. The PVC4000EVK kit consists of a PVC4000 transducer packaged in a brass housing with a 1/4 SAE male flare fitting, or a stainless steel housing with a KF16 fitting that allows it to be installed into any vacuum environment for quick evaluation. The PVC4000 transducer in the kit is calibrated and provides a digital output in microns. The kit's PC-based diagnostic software gives users access to different sensor readings and configuration data stored in the transducer.

"With the PVC4000EVK, vacuum gauge OEMs can find out in an hour's time what our digital Pirani vacuum sensor technology can do to help them offer customers more flexible and versatile end products that build brand loyalty," said Peng Tu, president and CEO at Posifa Technologies.

The PVC4000EVK's sensor element is based on Posifa's second-generation MEMS thermal conduction chip, which operates under the principle that the thermal conductivity of gas is proportional to its vacuum pressure. The transducer's microcontroller-based measuring electronics amplify and digitize the senor's signal, providing a digital output via an I²C interface.

The MEMS Pirani vacuum transducer included in the evaluation kit is calibrated for the vacuum range between 1 micron and 760,000 microns. Through the transducer's digital I²C interface, the user can access the sensor's raw output as well as the calibrated vacuum reading. The evaluation kit includes a custom wire harness that connects the sensor and the I²C to a USB adapter board, allowing the user to read sensor data from a PC in minutes.

Vacuum Transducer for OEMs.

Device Packages a MEMS Pirani Sensor and Microcontroller-Based Measuring Electronics in a Compact PCB Assembly

Their new PVC4000 series MEMS Pirani vacuum transducer has been announced by Posifa Technologies. Designed for cost-effective OEM integration, the device consists of a surface-mount MEMS Pirani sensor and microcontroller-based measuring electronics — all packaged in an ultra-compact PCB assembly featuring a connector-terminated wire harness.

The PVC4000's sensor element is based on Posifa's second-generation MEMS thermal conduction chip, which operates under the principle that the thermal conductivity of gas is proportional to its vacuum pressure. The transducer's microcontroller-based measuring electronics amplify and digitize the senor's signal, providing output via an I²C interface. The interface also allows users to store calibration data in the microcontroller, which is utilized by a built-in piecewise linearization algorithm to provide calibrated output.

To compensate for variations in thermal conductivity due to changes in ambient temperature, the PVC4000 features a temperature compensation algorithm, which takes its input from a built-in temperature sensor. In addition, a pulsed excitation scheme, in which the sensor chip is heated for about 100 ms and then turned off for one second, prevents signal drift due to self-heating, and also reduces the power consumption of the transducer.

The transducer released today is ideal for digital vacuum gauges. For these applications, the device combines low power consumption with extremely fast response times of >1.2 s and a wide effective range from 1 millitorr (0.13 Pa) to 1 atm (760 torr, or 101 kPa). Readers may contact Posifa to discuss options for customizing the transducer's specifications.

Ensuring safe landings.

To improve the performance and reliability of the roll and pitch axes for its Cessna C172 ‘Skyhawk’ simulator, Happy Landings have recently replaced gear mechanics and rotary potentiometers with SP1 and SM1 draw wire position sensors from Variohm EuroSensor.
Happy Landings Flight Simulations GmbH build and run technically sophisticated flight training simulators that have equal appeal for leisure users and budding pilots. With six highly detailed simulator models covering a range of aircraft types including helicopters, jets and commercial airliners, they include motion controlled replicas of real cockpits and surround screen HD graphics for terrestrial features and international airports.

As directly coupled measurement devices, the Variohm draw-wire (or cable extension transducer) solution reduces the potential for lost motion in the control system and improves the control sensitivity - and ultimately enhances the flying simulation experience. The SP1 series draw wire sensor provides a robust and compact position measurement solution for up to 1.27 metres travel whilst the miniature SM1 has the ability for even more compact installation for travel lengths to 0.63 metres. For this application both sensors are configured for voltage divider output from integral potentiometers with a measurement resolution which is essentially infinite and repeatability in the region of 0.5% full scale. A sturdy nylon-coated stainless steel cable connects the moving load to the potentiometric sensor through a spring loaded winch mechanism. Typical working life is more than 2.5 million cycles. Featuring durable polycarbonate housings with multiple mounting points they are easily installed and do not require perfect alignment.

Draw wire sensors may also be specified with IP67 protective housings for use in harsh outdoor environments where long travel, high accuracy linear position measurement is required. A wide range is available from Variohm EuroSensor with optional mechanical fixings, selectable voltage and current outputs as well as CANopen, SSI and other fieldbus interfaces if required. Draw wire sensors are well proven for positioning and linear measurement tasks in demanding applications such as high performance car throttle controls, elevating bridge and crane controls, heavy industrial equipment, agricultural and construction machinery.

A good steer for shipping!

Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG introduces KINAX WT720, an angular position transducer for capturing the position of ships' rudders or propellers. The absolute encoder is impressively robust and ideal for use in harsh environments.

In contrast to potentiometric encoders, Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG uses a contactless and maintenance-free capacitive measurement technique. It converts the angular position of the rudder or propeller into an electric signal (4 .. 20 mA). This simple but very effective technology ensures optimum signal quality and extremely high reproducibility. The overall robustness of the angular position sensor ensures long service life. This has been confirmed by independent test institution which calculated the MTBF according to EN/IEC 61709 / SN29500 as almost 3 million hours.

The KINAX WT720 angular position sensor is very easy to install. It is connected to the rudder drive directly by means of rods and a coupling system and the electrical connection uses 2-wire technology. The rudder's midpoint or neutral position can be accurately referenced by the encoder. Parametrisation of the rudder angle positions is easy and is done directly on board using the built-in pushbutton. All this makes the installation of the mechanical parts and signal interface in the stern of the ship very straightforward. In almost no time, with "just a few screws" the encoder is ready and correct for immediate operation.

The WT720 encoder is virtually maintenance-free and so no extra product maintenance are incurred during the operational lifetime. Thanks to in-house manufacturing and a high degree of vertical integration, product delivery is guaranteed 5 days after order confirmation. On customer request, the encoder can be shipped directly to its final address. This helps keep stock levels to a minimum and allows secure management of spare parts when there are revisions.
