High and low operating temp. accelerometers

Two new low profile, voltage mode, triaxial accelerometers from Kistler are now available with extended operating temperature ranges; up to +165°C for high temperature and down to –195°C for cryogenic applications both with a measuring range of ±500g.

The three Kistler K-Shear sensitive quartz elements in an IP68 hermetically sealed stainless steel housing, combine long term stability with wide operating frequency range and extremely low sensitivity to thermal transients and transverse acceleration. The charge signals from the three sensing elements are converted internally to low impedance voltage by a Piezotron microelectronic converter.

Because of its low mass of 11g and small size of 15.8mm square by 9.7mm high, the new sensors are especially useful for measuring on small and lightweight structures, where mass loading must be kept at a minimum. It can also be used for drop tests and finds application in a wide variety of vehicle vibration studies, modal analysis, product development and aerospace testing.

The new extended range triax accelerometers are especially suited to demanding applications encountered in the military and aerospace sectors where any error may present a life-threatening situation. Flutter testing, rocket launch pad dynamics, aircraft EMA, ammunition investigations and helicopter rotor reactions are a just few of the applications demanding the capabilities of the new products.

Wireless accelerometer.

Wireless accelerometer according to LoRaWAN™ specification with edge computing for condition monitoring minimizes downtime, maximizes availability and reduces installation costs

Scalable, reliable and more compact wireless sensors for remote condition monitoring help companies get the most from their assets by minimizing downtime, maximizing availability and reducing installation costs. Further, enhanced condition monitoring systems are key to improving the uptime of machinery. To provide this level of performance in critical machinery in industrial applications, TE Connectivity has designed the 8911 wireless accelerometer.

The 8911 is a compact, LoRaWAN™ wireless accelerometer with edge computing for condition monitoring.

Key benefits of the 8911 wireless accelerometer include:

  • LoRaWAN™ Class A: The LoRaWAN™ specification is a low power, wide area networking protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery operated devices to the internet. This protocol provides longer transmission distance and is less susceptible to external signal interference. It also offers secure means of expanding condition-based maintenance into plant areas where the cost to install wired systems is prohibitive, making data available to existing process control and information systems. LoRaWAN™ can be implemented on a managed network or on a customer’s own private network.
  • Edge computing: The 8911 wireless accelerometer provides ambient temperature and calculates FFTs in the device. It transmits the relevant top eight peak frequencies and combines a sensor, data collector and a LoRaWAN™ radio into one compact, battery-operated device.
  • Compact: The 8911 wireless accelerometer is designed with a corrosion resistant stainless steel case and plastic cover measuring 1.25” hex x 3.1” height, the same as existing cable versions. Its mounting footprint and stud size are standard to enable fast installation on existing and new machinery.
  • Reliable: Robust signal preventing interference and drop out. The rugged stainless steel sensor housing with IP66 rated o-ring seal allows the sensor to perform well in harsh environments.
  • 10-Year battery life: This sensor has up to 10 years of battery life based on a certain sampling interval. It uses a piezo-electric sensing element, which has the advantage of high bandwidth, superior measurement resolution and ultra-low power vs MEMS solutions, enabling longer battery life and enhanced machine failure detection.

“The 8911 wireless accelerometer combines a sensor, data collector, digital signal processor, and radio into one compact, battery-operated device that measures both vibration and temperature data,” said Bjorn Ryden, director of product management for TE’s sensors business. “We are confident that our customers will benefit from this product and be impressed by its ability to provide top performance in continuous health monitoring of critical industrial machinery.”

The MB Dynamics Win475 MDCC increases metrology center throughput and productivity by facilitating the accurate, efficient, and simultaneous automated calibrations of up to eight (8) single axis piezoresistive accelerometers (DUT’s) of the same model and type, over a frequency range of 10 to 4000 Hz, complying with SAEJ211, SAE2570, and other global automotive industry test standards. Its versatile design further supports the automated single calibrations of non-piezoresistive DUT’s, including piezoelectric, IEPE, voltage and velocity sensors, over frequencies from 5 Hz to 15 kHz. These combined features can help calibration technicians to achieve a measurable 70%-time savings over single-DUT calibration methods with greater accuracy and repeatability.

As a complete turnkey system, the industry-exclusive design of the Win 475 MDCC automated accelerometer calibration system seamlessly integrates MB’s own Model CAL25AB air bearing exciter, together with its Model 407-8X multi-channel signal conditioner; MB 500VI power amplifier; and proprietary MB Win475 MDCC software, further supported by an industry standard NI DAQ card.

Other system components include an internal removable reference (REF) accelerometer with 100 mV/g sensitivity and usable frequency range to 15 kHz, further traceable to national standards and ISO 17025; an eight-DUT test instrument mounting fixture (TIMF) adaptor plate; a single-DUT TIMF; a 475PCM module; a Windows 10 PC, monitor, keyboard and printer; a calibration accessory kit; user manuals; and system installation, start-up and training support.

As a multi-DUT automated calibration system, the MB Win475 MDCC quickly and efficiently measures and saves relevant accelerometer characteristics, such as ZMO, Zin and Zout, as well as input & output impedance values. Its versatility and flexibility allow an end-user to choose from among seven (7) individual (six internal, one external) high-precision resistors for shunt calibration. The system also reads onboard sensor electronic identifications, such as 1-Wire Dallas ID memory chips or TEDS piezoelectric accelerometers (per IEEE 1451). The MB MDCC system may be further integrated into customer-specified databases for additional automation capabilities with reduced calibration data transference errors.

The automation afforded by the MB Win475 MDCC mitigates the risks of human errors inherent to manual accelerometer calibration systems, thereby freeing up technicians for other measurement tasks. The increased frequency of accelerometer calibrations afforded by system further helps technicians to improve in-laboratory test data quality and productivity while reducing documentation errors. The system has proven especially useful within crash test and automotive safety test laboratory environments, in applications where larger volumes of piezoresistive accelerometers are in use, therefore requiring more frequent recalibrations. In addition, the MB Win475 MDCC provides a number of value-added end-user benefits, including bottom-line cost savings, with its elimination of outsourced calibration service needs; implementations of more efficient and effective in-house calibration processes; and simplifications of internal record-keeping accuracy, further aiding in ISO audit compliance.

The Win475 MDCC automated accelerometer calibration system is also accompanied by full technical support, with in-house customer training provided by the 40-year calibration experts at MB Dynamics.

High temperature accelerometer.

Kistler has added the world’s first high temperature accelerometer to its pressure sensor for the monitoring of gas turbines. Both the new accelerometers and pressure sensors are designed for long-term use at up to 700°C and are certified in accordance with the European ATEX guide lines for explosion prevention (Ex-nA and Ex-ia). The piezoelectric accelerometer is not pyroelectric and does not show any moisture-induced stress (popcorn effect) offering manufacturers and operators of gas turbines new options for monitoring the combustion stability.

Pic: Kistler Group
The efficient and secure operation of gas turbines relies upon stable combustion processes. These have to comply with increasingly strict regulations, including flexible operation on different fuels and minimal emissions. At the same time, there is an associated risk of unstable combustion processes and pressure pulsations. Reliable and continuous monitoring systems are required to monitor and control these combustion processes.

The new high temperature accelerometer from Kistler is the only accelerometer designed for permanent operation with a lifespan of three to five years at temperatures up to 700° C. The patented PiezoStar crystal technology from Kistler used in the new sensor is neither pyroelectric nor does it produce any popcorn effects. As a result, the sensor is highly reliable and generates high-quality signals for the interference-free monitoring of combustion dynamics.

The Swiss-made sensor completes the modular thermoacoustic portfolio from Kistler, including pressure sensors and accelerometers for long-term monitoring of gas turbines and combustion dynamics in high temperature surroundings. Both high temperature sensors from Kistler are certified in accordance with the European ATEX guide- lines for explosion prevention (Ex-nA and Ex-ia).

Triaxial accelerometer.

If you need a triaxial accelerometer that combines wide frequency range from, DC to 2kHz with exceptionally low noise, the choice has been very limited until now.

The new Type 8396A triax from Kistler has those characteristics plus excellent linearity and an integral signal amplifier for an analog voltage output all in a miniature, titanium housing weighing only 30 grams. With six ranges from 2g to 200g these new MEMS accelerometers are the answer to most demanding applications from automotive durability testing and road load data and aviation flutter testing to bridge structural monitoring and railway rolling stock testing and monitoring.

The new Type 8396A accelerometer uses a MEMS variable capacitance, silicon sensing element to simultaneously measures acceleration and/or low-frequency vibration in three mutually perpendicular axes from DC to 2,000Hz. The integrated signal amplifier provides a wide range of industry standard output signals options to interface with most current DAQ systems. The sensing element and electronics are contained in a lightweight, hermetically sealed, welded titanium housing with either a circular 9 pin connector or an integral cable. Ground isolation is obtained by mounting the sensor using one of range off-ground accessories or by adhesive mounting using the side of the sensor with the integral hard anodized plate.

The combination of wide frequency range, low noise and operating temperature from -55°C to +125°C combined with small size and mass make the new Type 8396A triaxial accelerometer ideal for applications wherever very low frequency measurements need to be made accurately, even under varying temperatures in exposed, outdoor environments.

Miniature triaxial accelerometer.

The new Type 8766A lightweight, triaxial accelerometer from Kistler Instruments uses the, patented PiezoStar® crystal developed by Kistler to provide ultra-stable performance with very little sensitivity deviation with temperature changes. Over a temperature range of -50°C to +165°C a PiezoStar® sensor has a sensitivity deviation with temperature which is over thirty times better than a similar quartz sensor. The Temperature Coefficient of Sensitivity of a quartz triaxial accelerometer is 0.18 %/°C, compared with only 0.005 %/°C for a 250g measurement range for the new PiezoStar triaxial accelerometer.

The new accelerometer has been designed specifically to bring these unique properties to applications demanding high accuracy measurements in varying temperature up to 165°C. The small cubical, hermetic titanium housing has threaded mounting holes on each of three sides to facilitate calibration and simplify installation for tests whilst the low mass of only 4g reduces any influence on the test structure. The Kistler PiezoStar® shear element design provides a flat frequency response over a wide operating frequency range and extremely low sensitivity to temperature changes.

The IEPE sensor combines the PiezoStar® crystal with high gain, integral, hybrid microelectronics to achieve very low sensitivity variation over the wide operating temperature range, compared to other sensing element designs, and high immunity to base strain errors. The Transducer Electronic Datasheet (TEDS), embedded in the chips integrated within the IEPE sensor, enable data acquisition systems to automatically recognize the sensor specification and so reduce set up time, minimise risk of human errors and eliminate the need for manual point-to-point connection identification.

Five variants cover the measurement range from ±50g to ±1,000g all with a 100% overload capability plus a high temperature option for temperatures of up to 165°C. In contrast to ceramic and quartz, the extremely stiff piezoelectric crystal sensing element offers a flat frequency response with no slope across the entire useable frequency range of 0.5 to 20,000 Hz.

The accelerometer uses a welded titanium construction for low mass and an industry standard 4 pin connector, as well as a mini 4 pin connector option for lower mass and wider frequency operation. All variations provide reliable measurements and long-term stability, especially at higher operating temperatures. The miniaturized light-weight measuring element in a hermetic titanium housing which has threaded mounting holes on each of the three axes to simplify cable connection and minimise unwanted cable loops. A range of ground isolated mounting bases are available with adhesive, threaded and magnetic mounting options and an integral silicone cable variant is available for underwater vibration testing at up to 10 bars (150 psi).

With its extremely wide and flat frequency response, the unique Type 8766A accelerometer from Kistler instruments is ideal for use in modal and durability testing applications at widely varying temperatures.

Very cool precision accelerometer.

The new Type 8712B high sensitivity, voltage mode accelerometer from Kistler Instruments is designed to operate reliably at cryogenic temperatures as low as the -196°C (minus 196°C) needed by many aerospace applications.

With its range of ±5g and high 1,000mV/g sensitivity, the new accelerometer is ideally suited to applications involving low amplitude vibrations over a wide frequency range. On large structures, low amplitude vibrations as low as 100μg can be measured accurately and reliably over the long term. Typical applications include microvibration testing in spacecraft, seismic and any low amplitude vibration testing on heavy structures.

Their exclusive PiezoStar® sensing element and K-Shear® design combination produces an accelerometer with very low sensitivity to base strain, thermal changes and transverse acceleration. The unique sensing elements provide long-term stability, which ensures repeatable and accurate measurements for many years. In addition to the PiezoStar® shear elements contained within the titanium hermetic housing, integrated Piezotron® micro-electronics convert the high impedance charge signal into a ±5V signal. This low impedance voltage output minimizes noise pick-up and eliminates the need for highly insulated low noise cables.

The Type 8712B accelerometer can be attached to any clean and flat surface on a structure by a single threaded hole on the base of the sensor. Signal Conditioning & Data Acquisition can be provided by the Kistler LabAmp Type 5165A or any IEPE Compatible Data Acquisition equipment.

The rugged, welded, hermetic construction makes the new accelerometer ideally suited for accurate long term measurements in adverse conditions down to cryogenic temperatures.

Full scale signal output is ±5V for both ranges. Applications include automotive NVH and durability, space and aerospace vehicle testing and subsystem vibration testing.

The Kistler ceramic shear element technology ensures high immunity to base strain and the low mass, 6 gram, minimises any effect on the item under test. The welded titanium through hole fixing housing is hermetically sealed and M4.5 and ¼-28 miniature 4 pin connector options allow 360° cable orientation for maximum installation flexibility.

The IEPE (Integrated Electronics Piezoelectric) design with the TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data sheet) option delivers small size, light weight, robustness and low cabling costs whilst the aluminium anodized base ensures ground isolation from mounting surfaces.

The slim profile, base isolation, light weight and wide frequency response in the three orthogonal directions combined with centre-hole mounting flexibility for 360° cable orientation make the new Type 8764B accelerometers easy to install where space is restricted and the robust welded titanium construction ensures a long life in hostile environments.

No mean feat for an accelerometer!

Packing a 1000g triaxial capability with integrated signal conditioning into a miniature, titanium cube accelerometer weighing less than four grams is no mean feat but that is what Kistler Instruments has achieved with the latest addition to its PiezoStar® family.

The new accelerometer has exceptionally low thermal sensitivity shift combined with a flat frequency response across the entire 0.5 to 10,000Hz frequency range to provide versatile, high-accuracy measuring in changing temperatures from -54°C to 165°C. The Kistler’s PiezoStar® shear crystal sensing element gives very low sensitivity variation over the wide operating temperature range, compared with quartz and ceramic sensing elements.

The hermitically sealed, welded titanium, ground isolated, IP68 housing permits operation in harsh, dirty or wet environments. A TEDS (Transducer Electronics Data Sheet) option is available to simplify installation and set-up. Mounting by a central mounting hole tapped 6-32 UNC on each of three sides of the cube design gives maximum adapterless mounting flexibility and allows the miniature 4-pin ceramic connector to be positioned throughout 360 degrees for convenient cable orientation.

The new accelerometer can be powered by any Kistler power supply coupler or industry standard IEPE (Integrated Electronic Piezoelectric) compatible power source.

With its extremely wide and flat frequency response this unique accelerometer is designed for use in modal and durability testing of automotive, aviation and aerospace structures at high temperatures. It is equipped with a voltage output (IEPE) and a range of insulated adapters is available.

Calibration accelerometer!

The new Type 8080 back-to-back vibration calibration standard accelerometer from Kistler,  uses an innovative PiezoStar® based sensing element, first of its kind for a back to back sensor, which combines very good transient response with very low case/base strain sensitivity and a 50g range. The accelerometer is designed specifically for use as a transfer standard for calibrating accelerometers and is equally suited to laboratory and field applications.

The new accelerometer is the company's most accurate and repeatable low impedance, back-to-back, vibration calibration standard and features low base strain, long-term and thermal stability and high frequency response. Due to its unique shear design, it offers minimum sensitivity to shaker lateral rotation (rocking motion). A beryllium mounting base, lapped optically flat, provides optimum coupling between Type 8080 and the accelerometer being calibrated. Contained within the housing is a piezoelectric system consisting of a seismic mass preloaded to a PiezoStar element and miniature hybrid electronics. This combination yields a high level, low impedance voltage output signal proportional to the accelerating stimulus.

This PiezoStar® based sensing element offers long-term thermal stability from −65oC to 120oC, and is superior to quartz in terms of voltage gain/noise. The high rigidity provides a frequency response flat to within ±5 % from 1 Hz up to 10 kHz. The shear design, first of its kind for back-to-back sensors, combines an excellent transient response with very low case/base strain sensitivity and a ground isolated interface to shaker. Both signal and DC excitation power are connected through a single coaxial cable.
