Driver for robotic navigation systems.

ACEINNA has announced the availability of their new OpenIMU ROS Driver for developers of robots and robotic applications.

“This new ROS driver makes it simple to integrate a wide variety of ACEINNA IMUs  - Inertial Measurement Unit sensors) into almost any robotics applications (warehouse robotics, autonomous vehicles, last mile deliver robotics, etc., which uses ROS,” says James Fennelly, Product Marketing Manager – Inertial Systems at ACEINNA. “When combined with our IMU’s industry leading reliability and accuracy, as well as very competitive pricing (under $100 {€85}), developers of robotic solutions finally have an easily integrated, rock-solid solution for their navigation and localization challenges.”

Available on the Sensors Page at ROS.org and GitHub this new driver enables robotic application developers to quickly and easily integrate highly accurate (>1 .5) IMU’s into their navigation guidance systems.

The new ROS Driver currently works with their versatile OpenIMU family, which includes the OpenIMU300ZI, OpenIMU300RI, and OpenIMU330BI. Each sensor has its own distinct hardware features, allowing the user several options for their unique application. The open-source nature of this architecture makes each device highly configurable as well. The OpenIMU’s have several software applications available, with source code available via Github and the ACEINNA Extension on Microsoft Visual Studio Code. Software applications include IMU, VG-AHRS, and INS.

Extremely compact, ACEINNA’s IMUs integrate a triple-redundant architecture, that, when combined with their small, low-cost packaging, meets the challenging performance, reliability and cost requirements of the robotic and autonomous market.

The Robotic Operating System (ROS) is a set of software libraries and tools that help developers create robotics applications. It can be described as a software development kit (SDK). As stated on ROS.org : “The ROS user community builds on top of a common infrastructure to provide an integration point that offers access to hardware drivers, generic robot capabilities, development tools, useful external libraries, and more.” This allows users to get their robotics projects up and running a lot faster than starting from scratch.

Combining the architecture of the ROS environment with the versatility of the OpenIMU platform the possibilities are endless and at the users fingertips.

Why are current sensors important?

A new whitepaper for engineers involved in developing power management solutions for a wide range of industrial applications has been issued. Written by Khagendra Thapa, VP Current Sensor Product for ACEINNA, this new whitepaper outlines the basic issues that are addressed by current sensors and why they are important.

The white paper also explains what AMR (Anisotropic Magnetoresistive) technology is and what are its advantages for current sensing versus other technologies like hall effect, transformers and shunt resistor.

“Integrated, AMR based current censors provides the best performance for the price in the industry,” says Khagendra Thapa, VP Current Sensor Product for ACEINNA. “An AMR based sensor is especially valuable for applications where isolation is needed, due to its construction, compared to legacy methods.”

Additionally, this white paper explains how a unique U shaped current path architecture that utilizes two side by side AMR sensors is able to nullify external magnetic fields, providing the design engineer with a great deal more flexibility regarding the sensors placement on the end device.

Current sensors based on AMR Technology.

Aceinna has announced its new MCx1101 family of ±5A, ±20A, and ±50A Current Sensors for industrial and power supply applications. The first high accuracy wide bandwidth AMR-based current sensors on the market, units and evaluation boards are available now for sampling and volume shipments.

“Our new integrated, AMR based Current Sensor family provides the best performance for the price in the industry,” says Khagendra Thapa, VP Current Sensor Product for ACEINNA. “There are other AMR based current sensing solutions on the market, but they require a great deal of integration to make them work. Ours are plug and play.”

The MCx1101 are fully integrated, bi-directional current sensors that offer much higher DC accuracy and dynamic range compared with alternative solutions. For example, the ±20A version has a typical accuracy of ±0.6% and are guaranteed to achieve an accuracy of ±2.0% (max) at 85°C.

These new current sensors also guarantee an offset of ±60mA, or ±0.3% of FSR (max) over temperature, which means that high accuracy can be achieved over a roughly 10:1 range of currents. This is a roughly 10x improvement in dynamic range vs. leading Hall-sensor-based devices.

These devices deliver a unique combination of high accuracy, 1.5MHz signal bandwidth with industry benchmark phase shift vs. frequency and 4.8kV isolation making them ideal for high- and low-side sensing in fast current control loops for high performance power supplies, inverters and motor control applications.

The fast response and high bandwidth of the MCx1101 is also ideal for fast switching SiC and GaN based power stages enabling power system designers to make use of the higher speeds and smaller components enabled by wide band-gap switches. Output step response time is 0.3us. The MCx1101 also provides an integrated over current detection flag to help implement OCP (Over Current Protection) required in modern power systems. Over current detection response time is fast 0.2us.

The family includes ±50, ±20, and ±5A ranges, and is offered in both fixed gain (MCA1101) and ratiometric gain (MCR1101) versions. It is packaged in an industry standard SOIC-16 package with a low impedance (0.9 milli-ohm) current path and is certified by UL/IEC/EN for isolated applications.

Dynamic tilt.

A new MEMS based, MTLT305D Dynamic Tilt Sensor Module has been launched by ACEINNA. It combines accelerometers, gyroscopes and a temperature sensor with advanced calibration and correction algorithms to provide accurate 3D acceleration, 3D rate and Pitch and Roll measurement in dynamic, moving vehicle applications.

The MTLT305D uses advanced sensor fusion (Extended Kalman Filtering) and calibration algorithms to achieve 0.5 degree tilt and <10 milli-g acceleration accuracy in a wide variety of dynamic conditions. It is calibrated to accurately operate over a wide temperature range of -40C to +85C. The completely sealed compact module (65 x 66 x 27 mm) with integrated connector is perfect for rugged construction, off road and agriculture applications. It offers high reliability, MTBF >50k hours and is ITAR- Free

It includes CAN J1939 and RS232 interfaces for network connectivity. The miniature plastic housing is durable under hazardous environments (IP68 and IP69K ratings). It includes an Ampseal 16, 6 position connector and supports a wide 4.9 V to 32 V supply input range (qualified for use in both 12 V and 24 V vehicle platforms).

“This new Dynamic Tilt Sensor Module provides the best performance for the price in the industry,” says Mike Horton*, CTO of ACEINNA. “Not only is the MTLT extremely compact compared to competing modules, it is extremely rugged, well qualified and inexpensive.”

Easy to integrate, the MTLT305D supports industry standard SAE J1939 messaging over the CAN bus, and the included ACEINNA NAV-VIEW software provides simple to use graphical interface to display, record, playback, and analyze all the MTLT305D parameters over the RS232 port. NAV-VIEW can also be used to set a wide range of user-configurable fields in the MTLT305D to optimize the system performance for various dynamic applications.
