Femtosecond laser factory opened.

Chipmaking, data centre equipment, and medicine all need more femtosecond lasers, yet global production capacity was only an estimated 9,600 units last year. Femtosecond laser company LITILIT have just opened a new factory in Vilnius (LT) and plans to reach 3,000 lasers a year at full capacity.

According to the company, the factory currently has the highest potential femtosecond laser capacity in the world. The majority of the company’s lasers will be exported to North America, Asia, and Europe.

The new factory covers 4,000 sq m and will produce around 3000 lasers a year at full capacity. The €6 million project includes a modern CNC metal machining shop, robotized femtosecond laser assembly and testing shops, and an ISO 5 cleanroom of about 2,500 sq m, one of the largest in the Baltics.

Nikolajus Gavrilinas
Nikolajus Gavrilinas, co-founder and CEO of LITILIT, says that the new factory marks an important milestone both for the company, which has been developing its laser technology since 2014, and for the whole laser industry.

“The growing use of femtosecond lasers in semiconductor manufacturing, data centre equipment, electronics, medicine and other fields is driving demand across Europe, North America and Asia. Our factory comes at exactly the right time and will serve businesses on all three continents. The Vilnius plant is only the first stop; later, we plan to replicate this model in other countries together with our international partners," says Gavrilinas.

Located in a modern logistics park developed by SIRIN Development in Vilnius, the factory covers over 4,000 sq m and houses a CNC metal machining shop, robotized assembly and testing shops, and an ISO 5 cleanroom of about 2,500 sq m, one of the largest in the Baltics. The total value of the project is €6 million.

Gavrilinas notes that femtosecond laser production remains limited worldwide because the technology evolved from scientific systems and is notoriously difficult to produce at scale. Last year, global femtosecond laser production capacity was an estimated 9,600 units, according to Reports and Markets.

LITILIT can scale laser production quickly because of its patented architecture based on modular design, reduced component complexity, and a high level of automation. At full capacity, the factory will employ about 150 people, several times fewer than conventional production would require. Besides scalability, the architecture also gives LITILIT's lasers a performance edge. According to Gavrilinas, they reach around 20% electrical-to-optical efficiency and are up to half the size of the industry average, which makes them easier to integrate into production lines.

The company developed its technology based on two international patents, one of which was made in collaboration with the centre for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) in Lithuania.

Ramūnas Skaudžius, director at FTMC, says the factory is a reminder that the value of scientific research is measured not only by publications or patents. It also confirms that in Lithuania it is possible to complete the entire journey from a scientific idea to a product serving global markets.

“The laser technology developed and patented at FTMC has now become the foundation of advanced industrial manufacturing. Yet the technology itself is not the most important part of the story. What matters most is that knowledge created in Lithuania has been transformed into a business capable of competing on the international stage. This is a long and demanding journey that requires not only scientific excellence, but also entrepreneurial courage, investors’ confidence, and perseverance,” Skaudžius says.

Femtosecond lasers use extremely short pulses that process materials with only minimal heat damage to surrounding structures. This quality, known as cold ablation, makes them indispensable in applications ranging from eye surgery and vascular stents to manufacturing computer chips and display screens.

Ten million chipsets!

Silicon Labs and Wirepas have announced that they have shipped 10 million wireless SoCs running Wirepas’ RF mesh connectivity software, primarily in the Indian market with the Silicon Labs sub-GHz FG23 SoC. These chips power some of the world’s largest and most demanding industrial mesh networks across sectors including smart electricity metering, emergency lighting, industrial monitoring and building automation.

The two companies have a long history of collaboration enabling robust, ultra-resilient and massively scalable IoT networks that meet the scale, security, and reliability demands of industrial-grade applications. This milestone confirms that their joint solution is not just technically sound, it is market-proven at scale, and ready to support the digital backbone of global infrastructure.

In December 2024, Silicon Labs and Wirepas announced that four million smart electric meters using Wirepas Mesh software had been deployed in India built on the sub-GHz FG13 and FG23 platforms, helping the country meet the goals of its Advanced Metering Initiative. The solution provides reliable, cost-effective connectivity across dense, complex environments, being a critical enabler for India’s ambitious grid modernization and electrification goals.

Another standout success is in Norway, where more than one million similarly-equipped smart meters are connected in a single decentralized mesh network, one of the largest of its kind in the world. These types of deployments demonstrate that robust, self-healing mesh connectivity can now support national-scale infrastructure, laying the groundwork for smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable infrastructure powering cities and industries.

Other segments are also gaining momentum, with some, such as the emergency lighting sector, experiencing very high adoption rates.

“Our partnership with Wirepas is built on a shared vision: to enable industrial-grade wireless connectivity at scale,” said Ross Sabolcik, Senior Vice President of Product Lines at Silicon Labs. “By combining Silicon Labs’ energy-efficient wireless platforms with Wirepas’ decentralized mesh stack, we help our customers build massive, secure, and resilient IoT networks faster and more cost-effectively. We’re excited to continue driving transformation across industries together.”

“This 10-million milestone demonstrates the unmatched scalability and resilience of our joint solution,” said Teppo Hemiä, CEO of Wirepas. “With Silicon Labs’ hardware and our mesh software, we’ve enabled massive networks that simply work, even in the most challenging conditions. Our partnership is helping industries solve real problems at the infrastructure level, accelerating the digitalization and electrification of society.”

Three new chips for RF4CE market

GreenPeak Technologies has just launched three new chips, allowing the development of robust and low cost ZigBee RF4CE remote control applications for TV’s and set-top boxes, addressing an overall one billion unit annual market.

The three devices all have full RF4CE functionality with ZRC embedded, targeting specific product applications:
GP520
• GP520: front-panel controller for set-top box with SPI/TWI interface
• GP530: front-panel controller for TV with UART interface
• GP540: complete, low-cost “remote control on a chip” including embedded keyboard scanner and full IR functionality

All devices are optimized for low cost, ease of integration and allow fast time-to-market by only requiring a simple configuration step to achieve a complete RF4CE ZRC-compliant end product.

“Bringing the complete RF4CE functionality for each application into a single device makes low cost and reliable RF remote controls a reality,” said Cees Links, CEO of GreenPeak Technologies. “This new series of RF4CE chips brings the cost of the total solution down and makes the choice for RF remote controls even easier. GreenPeak provides a streamlined one-stop-shop offering for RF4CE chips. The integration of advanced RF4CE configurability provides simplicity of integration bringing the development and integration time down to virtually zero.”

GreenPeak’s unique ultra low power and synchronization optimized for remote controls enables single coin cell battery operation for ten years or more. It also enables advanced thin remote control designs not requiring a battery lid and it implements find-me and push functionality.

GreenPeak also takes Wi-Fi coexistence one step further. The GreenPeak RF4CE chips offer an additional 30dB (1000x) better interference robustness against Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other RF signals, which is the result of a superior radio design with antenna diversity technology. This patented technology uses two separate antennas to avoid the typical in-door wave cancellation, essential when more TVs and set-top boxes will be equipped with Wi-Fi internet connections.

Much better than IR (infra-red) based remote controls, RF remote controls provide two-way high-speed communication and do not require line of sight as the radio signal transmits through cabinets, obstacles, walls and floors. A ZigBee RF4CE remote control system (compliant with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, operating in the 2.4GHz global frequency band) is faster, more reliable, includes richer, bi-directional communication and provides a greater range compared to traditional IR remote controls.
