Reliable code reading.

New code reader reliably captures 1D and 2D bar codes – even in the form of DPM codes.

Leuze has expanded its portfolio with the DCR 100i series, a compact code reader designed for reliable 1D, 2D and DPM code detection across variable working distances and high process speeds.

Whether on printed circuit boards, assemblies, or moving packaging, tracking and quality control in industrial production require sensors that can reliably detect bar codes. This is where the new DCR 100i series code reader from Leuze comes in: It provides precise reading of 1D and 2D codes through its high-resolution 1.3-megapixel CMOS imager. Users also benefit from simple commissioning and intuitive software.

Leuze's Sensor People have equipped the DCR 100i code reader with powerful decoding algorithms and flexible focus areas. The sensor thus reliably detects even small 1D and 2D bar codes at different distances. With a frame rate of 120 frames per second, the DCR 100i captures even fast-moving objects – ideal for systems with high process speeds of up to two meters per second. DPM codes applied directly to components can also be reliably detected. This is particularly important in the electronics industry. Another advantage is the DCR 100i’s large field of view allows it to read multiple codes simultaneously. This allows it to identify complex or grouped packaging efficiently.

The DCR 100i is ideal for object detection at high speeds, for example in the packaging industry. At 120 frames per second, it enables conveyor speeds of up to two meters per second.

Exact focus.
The DCR 100i can easily be set up for different working distances, code sizes and surfaces using the manually adjustable focus. Four selectable focus ranges – from very short (40 mm) to a long operating range (550 mm) – enable sharp images and high read rates in any application. This gives maximum flexibility for various industrial application scenarios.

Integrated in no time.
Users can conveniently set up the code reader directly on the device. Integrated trigger and teach buttons as well as automatic adjustment of exposure, illumination and decoding allow fast and error-free commissioning without a PC. The DCR 100i series provides Ethernet connectivity and supports industrial protocols such as Modbus and TCP/IP, as well as the RS232 serial interface. This allows the device to be integrated seamlessly into different automation systems.

The DCR 100i code reader can read multiple bar codes and 2D codes simultaneously with its large field of view. Its imager is optimized for vertical mounting and provides a wide horizontal field of view as well as optimized reading rates.

Robust design.

99.995% accuracy barcode reader.

A range of new industrial barcode readers that achieve 99.995% reading accuracy has been launched by Brady Corporation. These new barcode readers are designed to improve data accuracy and can share data via most prominent industrial protocols.

All 3 barcode readers, the V4500, V3200 and V2200, offer extremely high barcode reading accuracy. Brady says the readers encountered 1 issue per 2000 barcode scans when tested on wrinkled and reflective barcoded materials, while passing underneath the readers at 15 centimeters per second. To achieve the 99.995% accuracy, the readers use the proprietary, high performance CortexDecoder algorithm from Code Corporation, a Brady company. In addition, the readers are equipped with patented dual-field optics to accurately scan barcodes from afar, and from a variety of viewing angles.

Protocols.
The V4500 top range model and the V3200 mid range both work with a new V1400 industrial cradle from Brady. The cradle not only provides recharging for the readers’ up to 100 000 scan batteries, it can also share data via 8 industrial protocols, including Profinet, Ethernet/IP, ModBus TCP/IP, MQTT, OPC UA, Siemens S7 PLC, BacNet and Allen-Bradley PCCC. This enables almost any manufacturing or warehouse environment to switch to the higher accuracy barcode readers.

The top and mid range models (V4500 and V3200) reliably connect to the cradle from up to 100 meters via Bluetooth. The V2200 is wired and can be outfitted with a cable up to 3 meters long. Depending on the model, between 75 000 and 100 000 barcode readings are possible on a single battery charge.

All 3 readers can capture 40 mm barcode 128 data from up to 92 cm, and tiny 10 mm datamatrix codes from up to 17 cm. The reader models also resist 2.4 metre drops, tumbles, shocks and up to 113 kg crushes. All readers are water- and dust-resistant up to IP65 ingress rating.

Javascript programmable.
Each reader can be custom programmed to only read application-relevant barcodes on items that have several. Green/red light confirmation can be activated when a complete list of items is read, in any order, to support kit completion scenarios and to avoid missing, or misplaced parts. When GS1 or structured barcodes are used, a subseries of items can be confirmed, such as ‘medium green men t-shirts’. Custom programming the readers can be done with Javascript, either by in-house IT specialists or Brady’s specialised AIDC-team.

Integrated connectivity.

Bar code readers from Leuze are equipped with "integrated connectivity" Integrated connectivity means: All relevant industrial Ethernet interfaces are integrated into the sensor. It sounds simple but is not standard on the market. Instead, manufacturers often offer devices without an industrial Ethernet interface to save development effort. In such cases, the interface is available via a gateway.

The following examples show why this is not the optimal solution and why the system operator benefits in multiple ways with integrated connectivity from Leuze. The benefits range from commissioning (device management) to machine monitoring (condition monitoring) to process optimization.

Streamlined system layout.
Leuze offers devices with integrated interfaces for PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, and EtherCAT. The significant advantage that can already be gained during commissioning is demonstrated using design example with and without integrated connectivity. First a look at systems with barcode readers without integrated interfaces: here, each scanner must be connected to a separate gateway - this means an additional gateway with its own power supply for each barcode reader. As a result, the installation effort and the number of cables are twice as much as needed. The parameterization is also considerably more complex. Don’t forget: Because of the required gateways, there are significantly more devices in the system that can cause a malfunction and must be checked. In comparison, the same system with integrated connectivity: The industrial Ethernet interface is already integrated into every bar code reader. This makes separate gateways superfluous. Above all, the system layout is very clean and requires fewer cables. Last but not least, errors can be eliminated more quickly as fewer devices have to be checked.

Leuze sensors with integrated connectivity also have an additional feature that contributes to efficient commissioning: the devices have one switch as standard, i.e. an Ethernet input port and output port each. As a result, system operators do not need an external switch. In addition, several devices can be wired more easily, for example in a ring or linear topology. With linear wiring, the system operator connects one sensor to another through integrated switches. Only the last sensor in the chian is connected to the controller. The advantage here is also a simpler system design and fewer cables. Devices without an integrated switch, on the other hand, require an external Ethernet switch. Users must also connect each individual sensor to the switch via a star topology and then connect this to the controller

The usual control environment.
Integrated connectivity also means that you can work in your usual control environment. This is possible because the entire device parametrization is integrated into the GSDML file ("Generic Station Description Markup Language") of PROFINET, for example. In contrast, many other Ethernet-based devices on the market generally have to be parametrized via a web server. This is complicated because each manufacturer provides its own web server version with its own user interface. Users have to familiarize themselves with new interfaces every time and find the corresponding functions. In addition: devices without Ethernet that are connected via a gateway often require productspecific manufacturer's software for parametrization. This may result in compatibility issues with the hardware used.

For example, if the manufacturer does not update their software after a few years. Here too, integrated connectivity has multiple advantages:

  • Users remain in their usual control environment
  • No manufacturer software installation and related training required.
  • No need to access a web server

Leuze devices with integrated connectivity are very easy to parametrize. Only the GSDML file has to be downloaded from the Leuze website via the control and copied once into your engineering software. The modules are then available in the hardware catalogue. The function of the device is explained in a clear and concise way. This makes parametrization and sensor usage easy and the manual is not required in most cases.

Support from the sensor.
A look at the sensor’s device profile with integrated connectivity further simplifies programming. As an example: for the AMS and BPS positioning sensors, Leuze not only provides positioning values but also a calculated speed value. Anyone who needs this value in their system saves time as it does not need to be calculated. In addition, if you only want to filter for certain barcodes without integrated connectivity, you have to do this via the controller. Leuze BCL bar code readers can be done more efficiently because here you can prefilter according to specific criteria. Only codes which correspond to the required pattern are transferred to the control. The option to duplicate PROFINET devices in the engineering tool saves time. Users only have to specify the parameters once and can then copy the settings as needed. Integrated connectivity even helps when a device is replaced: If a damaged sensor has to be replaced, the system automatically transfers all the parameters stored in the controller to the new device. The sensor is immediately ready for use.

Keeping an eye on quality. 
Integrated connectivity not only provides support during commissioning but also with machine monitoring, i.e condition monitoring. For efficient operation, system operators need answers to questions such as: is the plant operating correctly? When do I need to schedule maintenance? The answers are provided by the integrated interface. Via industrial Ethernet communication, it not only transmits the actual process values but also diagnostic data which are available in the controller. As a result, all identifying data can be read out via a barcode reader to manage the device. This includes the serial number or the software/hardware of the sensor. Moreover, there are quite a number of diagnostic parameters, such as the number of OK and NOK readings. In particular, the system with the bar code readers, the system also supplies a quality indicator for each individual code reading. This provides information about the quality of the readings. The value is generally between 90 and 95 percent and can be monitored to detect deviations during operation. For example, caused by contamination or mechanical damage. Remote monitoring can also be implemented as an additional communication channel via OPC UA. The control can be used for this purpose, but Leuze sensors provide a much easier solution, as they can be accessed directly via the OPC UA. As a result, system operators can monitor their devices while the process is running. This gives them real-time information on the performance of the system. If required, the data can also be transferred to a cloud - there are no restrictions whatsoever.

Simple process optimization.
How can processes be optimized on the basis of the collected data? This is demonstrated by two representative practical examples using barcode readers. First example: The scanning window of the sensor can become contaminated. In some systems this does not happen for years, in others, it occurs more quickly. In order to determine which sensor is contaminated, data evaluation via OPC UA can be used. Based on the data, a software program records the reading quality of each individual decoding process. This indicates maintenance for bar code readers with impaired reading performance. Second example: The label itself can also cause problems - for example, if the code is damaged or printed incompletely. In this case, it is not enough to monitor an individual sensor to determine the error. Instead, the faulty label has to be traced along different reading stations to identify it. This makes it possible to detect similar evaluations and use the identification number to determine the label involved.

Summary.
Integrated connectivity offers advantages on several levels. It contributes to easier commissioning and provides additional information for machine monitoring. This information is particularly useful for process optimization, resulting in optimal system performance. All sensors developed by Leuze for Fieldbus-controlled automation, for example in intralogistics, are equipped with integrated connectivity. This allows system operators to save time and money. Large area barcode reader.

Cognex Corporation has released the High Speed Steerable Mirror, a patented technology designed for use with the DataMan® 470 barcode reader that supports large field of view applications with a single compact system.

“The High Speed Steerable Mirror changes the game for large area applications that typically require a multi-reader solution,” said Matt Moschner, Cognex’s Sr. Director of ID Products. “Now, e-commerce and logistics companies can get up and running more quickly, and achieve the same high accuracy scanning results with lower maintenance costs.”

The new steerable mirror attachment expands DataMan’s field of view both vertically and horizontally, giving 3MP and 5MP barcode readers an effective resolution greater than a 50MP sensor. Coupled with the latest in liquid lens technology, this system can both change field-of-view and depth of focus dynamically. A single DataMan system can now be used for pallet scanning, aggregation, and other large area applications that previously required high-resolution PC-vision or multiple fixed-mount sensors.

The steerable mirror arrives preassembled to the front of a DataMan 470. The unit is configured using a built-in web-based setup wizard, allowing operators to deploy an application in five minutes or less. The user simply enters their application specifications, and the wizard automatically calculates the optimal scanning pattern, ensuring the highest read rates in the shortest cycle times.

Barcode printers.

Printronix Auto ID has announced the addition of the T4000 RFID Thermal Barcode Printer to its rapidly growing line of high-performance RFID printers. The T4000 prints and encodes on both standard and on-metal RFID labels and tags making it a universal solution for almost all RFID applications.

Smart camera for identification & tracking applications

BOA IDR is a tiny smart camera package, from Stemmer Imaging,  capable of barcode, character and pattern identification or verification in a single self-contained unit. These core capabilities allow manufacturers to ensure that all product markings are correct when they leave the factory floor. BOA IDR provides a highly integrated solution for defect detection and reject tracking for high speed applications in the automotive, consumer, electronics, packaging and pharmaceutical industries.

Complete with embedded software and processing, BOA IDR allows manufacturers to combine 1D and 2D tracking with other inspection tasks. These include character reading (OCR) and feature verification to automatically identify, validate and verify markings or features on parts, products or assemblies.

1D and 2D capabilities include part validation and verification, part traceability and label validation in addition to 2D error proofing. OCR tools offer date, lot and product code validation, error proofing, printed text validation and label validation. Comprehensive pattern recognition facilities include label presence and placement, tamper proofing pattern verification, cap presence and placement, printed text verification, error proofing and robot guidance.

The preloaded IDR application can be quickly setup and deployed using a standard web browser interface. No software installation is necessary, except for the fully functional emulator that supports offline development and debugging. The versatile BOA IDR features a 4-step user interface designed to guide first time vision users but this also offers advanced features such as custom scripting for experienced integrators.

The camera is available in a choice of resolutions and provides standard industrial Ethernet protocols for integrating into the factory network, including support for popular PLCs such as Rockwell Automation and Siemens. In addition to Ethernet, BOA IDR provides serial RS-232 and discrete I/O connections, as well as expandable I/O options. A dedicated strobe output is further provided for direct light control.
