Redefining test development, productivity and efficiency.

Milestone with enhanced Ai for Flagship Test and Measurement software platform.

An updated version of NI Nigel™ AI, the industry’s first test-optimised AI technology, as well as new capabilities across its NI LabVIEW+ Suite have been announced by Emerson. This iteration of Nigel AI introduces code completion and contextual awareness of test projects and local hardware to further accelerate test development. Nigel AI is available through the LabVIEW+ Suite, a complete set of purpose-built tools created to aid test engineers with built-in expertise at their fingertips.

“We recognise that the role of an engineer is far more than just programming,” said Rudy Sengupta, vice president and general manager, NI test and analytics software, Emerson. “That’s why we created the LabVIEW+ Suite, to serve test professionals in a more comprehensive and intuitive way. The suite lets engineers carry context, configurations and data with them as they switch from task to task, saving significant time and empowering them to focus on the most valuable parts of their role."

The new technology reflects Emerson’s vision of reimagining productivity in the age of AI, empowering test engineers to keep pace with rising expectations for speed and efficiency while unlocking new levels of innovation through tools designed expressly for their work. This iteration builds on the initial release of Nigel AI last year with new capabilities. To better serve engineers, it has been taught test system design, test methodologies and test data analysis.

Nigel AI now has a code completion feature that suggests several intelligent next-step options during development, helping engineers select the best choice for their workflow while saving valuable programing time and avoiding potential errors. Nigel AI also gains contextual awareness of NI LabVIEW™ projects and the ability to review NI TestStand™ sequences and access local hardware, giving engineers context-rich support that accelerates development and improves accuracy.

Further enhancements to the LabVIEW+ Suite are designed to serve the large, global community of users with new features that enhance productivity and help to meet the most challenging test requirements.

New features in this release include:

  • Modern user interfaces leveraging new web technologies in LabVIEW and TestStand.
  • Improved debugging workflows in LabVIEW with better source code control integration.
  • Containerisation through Docker Desktop™ support for Windows™ improving CI/CD pipelines.
  • Installer enhancements for faster set-up.

Modular test platform.

New options build on 25 years of test expertise to accelerate system development, streamline integration and boost engineers’ future readiness.

Access to Emerson's field-proven NI PXI test platform has been expanded with new high-performance hardware at a more affordable price point. These additions make it easier for more engineering teams to adopt scalable, low-cost automated test systems without compromising precision or reliability, while laying the groundwork for AI-enhanced workflows.

The new NI PXI hardware – including high-resolution oscilloscopes, multifunction I/O modules, embedded controllers and an all-hybrid chassis – maintains the NI brand’s hallmark strengths in software integration, synchronized measurements and high channel density, while lowering the cost barrier for test system development. Combined with powerful NI software ecosystems like LabVIEWTM, InstrumentStudioTM and TestStandTM, Emerson empowers test teams to accelerate automation, simplify integration and build future-ready test solutions that evolve with their needs.

By lowering the cost barrier, Emerson is opening the NI Platform to smaller teams and emerging industries. The new, affordable NI PXI products include:

  • High-resolution oscilloscopes (NI PXIe-5108): Four- and eight-channel options with 100-megahertz bandwidth, 250-MegaSample per second sample rate and 14-bit resolution. The flexible, high-density design means engineers capture more data, faster, with seamless precision.
  • 18-slot hybrid chassis (NI PXIe-1081): An all-hybrid chassis with 2 gigabits per second system bandwidth. Built for growth, it scales easily and connects software-driven test systems so more teams can access critical data
  • Embedded controllers (NI PXIe-8842 / 8862): Simplified controllers supporting Windows 11™ and NI Linux Real-Time™. Engineering teams that don’t need a general purpose interface bus (GPIB) can ensure more accurate and efficient measurements in their workstreams.
  • 18-bit multifunction I/O modules (NI PXIe-6381 / 6383): New data acquisition (DAQ) modules offering industry-leading measurement performance with 18 bits of resolution and absolute accuracy down to 980 microvolts. With low noise voltage measurements across 16 or 32 channels, they deliver high accuracy and scalable solutions to automated test systems.

These new products represent the building blocks of a complete PXI system, where the true power behind better test capability revolves around engineers’ access to modular and configurable systems to meet unique test and measurement needs.

Expand RF validation techniques for radar and space systems.

The signing of an agreement with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) to advance wideband characterisation methods for active electronically scanned array (AESA) systems has been announced by Emerson. This joint effort aims to accelerate innovation, improve test coverage, and reduce risks for industries adopting next-generation AESA technologies, including aerospace and telecommunications.

AESA architectures are rapidly transforming radar, communications, and navigation systems, driving the need for more sophisticated and real-world-relevant test methodologies. To address this demand, Emerson will work with VUB to develop innovative approaches for wideband characterisation of RF and microwave components and subsystems used in AESA systems.

As part of the collaboration, Emerson is providing NI PXI test hardware and vector signal transceiver (VST) instruments to VUB. These tools enable multichannel, high-fidelity signal generation and analysis, allowing researchers to validate component behavior under realistic wideband conditions. This joint effort aims to accelerate innovation, improve test coverage, and reduce risks for industries adopting next-generation AESA technologies.

“Our partnership with Vrije Universiteit Brussel underscores Emerson’s commitment to ongoing refinement and advancement of RF and microwave testing methodologies,” said René Nuessgen, senior director, research and development, Emerson. “By integrating our advanced test and measurement technologies with VUB’s research expertise, we are enabling the development of robust and scalable approaches that will drive the adoption of AESA systems in high-reliability applications.”

Nuessgen and Professor Dries Peumans of VUB’s Electricity Department signed the agreement during an official ceremony held at European Microwave Week.

More accessible centralised test management.

Simplified set-up and remote connectivity

A new edition of NI SystemLink™ software platform has been launched by Emerson. This empowers teams of engineers to collaborate more effectively by remotely configuring and monitoring test systems comprised of NI PXI, NI CompactRIOTM, and data acquisition devices connected to PCs.

NI SystemLink connects test facilities to improve the quality, uptime and reliability of critical test programs by allowing engineers to track software revisions, device calibration and system utilisation across various environments. This new version simplifies set-up and installation while maintaining a feature-rich environment tuned to the needs of most labs and test facilities, eliminating the long setup times and heavy IT involvement typically required by similar solutions.

Using built-in remote software deployment capabilities, device calibration reports, live data dashboards and more, NI SystemLink helps engineers working in validation labs and production facilities to save time and resources without the usual overhead of an IT enterprise infrastructure.

Multi-instrument lab for engineering experimentation.

Electronics lab enables quick and easy circuit design testing in hands-on learning environments

Emerson has announced the NI Digilent Analog Discovery Studio Max, a multi-instrument lab for engineering experimentation. Designed for academic use in the classroom or remote learning environments, the new platform integrates 14 essential test instruments into a single, portable device.

The lab includes integrated power supplies and a breadboardable interface, enabling students to easily design and test circuits. Featuring a 14-bit resolution oscilloscope, waveform generator, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer, digital multimeter (DMM), power supplies and protocol analyzer, the NI Digilent Analog Discovery Studio Max combines several tools that engineering students need to advance critical skill sets.

"This is a comprehensive, compact, and user-friendly resource for students to develop a deeper understanding of fundamental electronics principles,” said Oscar Fonseca Lozano, academic product manager with Emerson’s test and measurement business. “We’re excited to see how the lab will help the next generation of engineers as they broaden their knowledge base using advanced test and measurement technologies.”

The latest in test excellence.

Emerson’s Test and Measurement business, formerly NI, has announced its premier NI Connect event will showcase the latest in intelligent NI test and measurement technologies driving innovation and enhancing business performance. The event for test and measurement customers and business and technology leaders runs May 21-22 in Austin, Texas.

“We will have a full lineup of keynote speakers who will share their experiences on how NI technologies are helping them use test as a strategic differentiator,” said Ritu Favre, group president of Emerson’s Test and Measurement business. “The NI software-centric test and measurement approach will be on full display, with our R&D experts available to collaborate directly with customers. They will assist in troubleshooting challenges and developing customized strategies that are specifically tailored to meet their unique needs.”

Industry leaders delivering keynotes at NI Connect include:

    George Kaehler, development lead at Siemens Mobility, who will discuss how Siemens uses NI software-centric product ecosystem of test hardware and software to achieve productivity gains.

Open innovation space laboratory.

Collaboration aims to revolutionize space system development and testing through advanced technology and strategies.

Emerson’s Test & Measurement Business Group, formerly NI*, and the the European Space Agency (ESA), have announced collaboration to create the new Open Innovation Laboratory located in Debrecen, Hungary. This facility will help redefine space system development and deployment by introducing advanced test strategies aimed at reducing costs and mitigating risks. This cooperation is also in line with the industrial policy objectives of the Hungarian government.

Located within Emerson’s Test & Measurement offices in Debrecen (H), the Open Innovation Laboratory is accessible to projects that meet specific criteria established by the ESA’s Navigation Innovation and Support Program (NAVISP). The lab is outfitted with the latest modular instrumentation and application software, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of technological advancements in the space market.

This builds on a productive relationship established over several years between our organizations, and I am confident it will pave the way to new market opportunities for innovative Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions and services,” said Rafael Lucas Rodriguez, head of ESA’s NAVISP Technical Programme Office. “The infrastructure for PNT is rapidly evolving, and the laboratory will provide industry with the tools to test and prototype new technologies addressing the emerging market areas such as Controlled Radiation Pattern Antennas (CRPA) to provide resilient positioning to the users.”

Key to the laboratory’s capabilities is the use of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) test systems, an enabling technology that replicates the operational environment for subsystems under test. The lab is also equipped with modular instrumentation and application software for the company’s Wideband Multichannel Phase Aligned Transceiver (MPA) System, S-Parameters, pulse-to-pulse stability, power added efficiency measurement and capability to emulate a Wideband Satellite Link.

By leveraging Emerson’s modular and scalable approaches, the facility aims to transform the design of complex satellite system-of-systems. This includes a focus on RF/micro-wave payloads based on wideband and active multi-beam antenna, on-board digital processor and regenerative software defined radio.

Acquisition completes Test & Measurement capability.

Emerson has closed its acquisition of NI (National Instruments), the leading provider of software-connected automated test and measurement systems, at an equity value of $8.2 billion (€7.72b).

The acquisition of NI advances Emerson’s position as a global automation leader and expands its opportunity to capitalise on key secular trends like nearshoring, digital transformation, and sustainability and decarbonisation. NI brings a portfolio of software, control and intelligent devices that is expected to accelerate Emerson’s revenue growth aligned to its 4-7% through the cycle organic growth target. NI increases Emerson’s end market exposure in discrete markets, which will be Emerson’s second largest industry segment, and with approximately 20% of sales in software, NI also increases Emerson’s exposure to high-growth industrial software markets. NI increases Emerson’s gross profit, with further adjusted EBITA margin expansion opportunities as Emerson delivers an expected $165 million of cost synergy opportunities by the end of year five through application of best practices from the Emerson Management System.

NI will become a new reported segment within Emerson called Test & Measurement and will be consolidated into the Software and Control group. The Test & Measurement business will continue to be headquartered in Austin, Texas. NI reported $1.66 billion in 2022 revenue and operates in more than 40 countries, serving approximately 35,000 customers across high-growth semiconductor and electronics, transportation and aerospace and defence markets.

Ritu Favre has been appointed to lead the Test & Measurement segment as Business Group President. Ms. Favre joined NI in 2019 as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the semiconductor business and was promoted to Executive Vice President of Business Units in 2022, where she was responsible for driving growth across the semiconductor and electronics; aerospace, defence and government; transportation; and portfolio business units. She brings more than 30 years of technology experience to Emerson, with deep customer relationships and expertise on the emerging innovations and technologies driving electronic test and measurement forward.

Third Generation VST.

Enables fast, high-performance, and versatile RF measurements for testing next-generation aerospace, defense, and wireless products.


New options and extended capabilities for NI's third generation PXI Vector Signal Transceiver (VST), the PXIe-5842 have been announced. Combined with NI’s software ecosystem, the PXIe-5842 is a versatile tool that can be used to test and validate products in aerospace and defense applications while supporting traditional RF capabilities such as spectrum analysis, signal analysis, and signal generation.


Demand for increased RF bandwidth, frequency agility, dynamic range, and digital data movement is pushing traditional instrumentation beyond its current capabilities. NI’s VST3, the PXIe-5842, is accelerating the development of the next generation of digitally integrated active Electronically Scanned Arrays (ESA) for radar, SatCom, and electronic warfare applications as well as commercial wireless applications such as Wi-Fi 7, 6G, Ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth.

The PXIe-5842 delivers precise control over signal parameters and real-time analysis with its extended frequency coverage from 30 MHz to 26.5 GHz. Enhancements also include up to 2 GHz of instantaneous RF bandwidth and upgraded Local Oscillator (LO) offset mode with improved average noise density. This version now enables digital and analog pulse modulation capabilities, and its 16-lane high-speed serial interface enables low-latency digital I/Q data streaming at rates up to the full 2 GHz IBW of the instrument, with futureproofing to 4GHz. When combined with PXI-based FPGA co-processors from NI, the third generation VST can emulate RF environments or other RF devices for system level tests. These new capabilities build upon the flexibility and versatility of the PXIe-5842, are useful for generic RF testing and are particularly suitable for aerospace and defense applications.

The capability expansions announced today are a testament to the PXIe-5842's versatility that also provides customers with the ability to build the next generation of wireless products. The PXIe-5842 delivers the performance necessary to support lab design and validation applications and incorporates the fast measurement speed and small form factor required to scale into production test applications. Additional Key Features Include:

  • Analysis- and Generation-only options
  • Baseband conditioning modes optimized for Wide Bandwidth or High Dynamic Range
  • Excellent phase noise performance
  • Best in class EVM measurements

A significant upgrade has been announced by NI to its flagship product LabVIEW. For nearly 40 years, LabVIEW has been the industry-standard product in the field of data acquisition, instrument control and automation. These latest improvements further enable engineers in their use of test insights and data to drive product and business performance. 

The latest improvements include:
  • Zoom for Block Diagram
  • Quick change for faster object creation
  • Double-click to create control or indicator from a wire
  • Visual improvements to Highlight Execution and option for execution speeds
  • Faster re-building of applications and packed project libraries
  • Virtual environment support for Python and LabVIEW users (announced Q1 2023) 
“It was exciting to see the appreciation from the audience at NI Connect when we demonstrated the upcoming, ease-of-use improvements with this new version of LabVIEW,” says Eric Reffett, Director of Product Management at NI. “Additions like Zoom and quick change are meaningful in a graphical development environment, and we are energized by both the engagement we got from the community during design, as well as the impact we know it will have.”

This initial release is focused on using projects and packages, and the relationship will continue to improve the way developers share and re-use code.

Diversifying technology Into test and measurement automation.

Next Step in Emerson's Portfolio Transformation to provide enhanced automation capabilities and expansion into diverse, high-growth discrete end markets.

Emerson and NI have entered into a definitive agreement under which Emerson will acquire NI for $60 per share in cash at an equity value of $8.2 billion (€7.46b). Emerson already owns approximately 2.3 million shares of NI, representing approximately 2% of shares outstanding, which were acquired at a weighted average price of $36.84. As a result, Emerson's effective per share purchase price is $59.61.

NI provides software-connected automated test and measurement systems that enable enterprises to bring products to market faster and at a lower cost. NI's solutions help customers solve current and future test challenges and improve speed and efficiency in their product development cycles. NI had $1.66 billion in 2022 revenue and operates in more than 40 countries, serving approximately 35,000 customers across semiconductor and electronics, transportation, and aerospace and defense markets.

Climate neutrality goal.

The NI 2021 Corporate Impact Report outlines the company’s first full year of progress toward its 2030 goals to make a positive impact on society and the planet. This progress ranges from building infrastructure for increasing NI’s workforce and supplier diversity over the next decade to creating hands-on STEM education programs that are already changing children’s lives every day.

The report also puts forth a new goal: By 2030, NI will become a climate-neutral company with an ongoing commitment to protecting biodiversity. The company’s ambition is to operate in a way that produces no net greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2).

NI’s 2030 Corporate Impact strategy and goals support three pillars—Changing the Faces of Engineering, Building an Equitable and Thriving Society, and Engineering a Healthy Planet—that were created to reflect where the company can have the greatest influence and impact as a test and measurement engineering leader.

“We are living through a period of rapid evolution. We see it with our customers who are accelerating the digital transformation of our world, and we see it in our society and across our planet,” said Eric Starkloff, CEO of NI. “Our 2030 Corporate Impact Strategy reflects our desire to be a driver of positive change.”

Formed Nine Long-term STEM Education Partnerships.
One of NI’s key drivers of positive transformation in 2021 was its announcement of $2.7 million in grants to STEM education initiatives that advance diversity in STEM education globally. The company formed nine new partnerships with nonprofits to bring hands-on programs and mentoring to girls and women, people of color and economically disadvantaged populations.

NI is using its funding, expertise and volunteerism to help partners scale their existing programs and co-create new initiatives. In Penang, Malaysia, NI worked with Penang Science Cluster to create and launch Girls in Engineering and Technology. In Debrecen, Hungary, it worked with Agora Science Center to launch the WATCH program. And in Austin, Texas, NI launched a collaboration with Thinkery and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area to jointly develop Collaboration to Realize Equity and Teach Engineering (C.R.E.A.T.E.).

These programs aim to diversify the engineering talent pipeline, complementing NI’s efforts to increase diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in its own workforce. To that end, the company engaged 74% of its employees in a Leading Inclusion conversation series, expanded its inclusion resource groups to over 1,000 employees and diversified its recruiting strategies.

Achieved Global Pay Equity Ambitions.
NI has a goal to achieve substantial equity in total rewards — base salary, variable pay, and benefits — for all employees in similar roles and levels with comparable performance and impact. In 2021, the company achieved substantial equity in base salary across the company, with ratios of 99% for women to men (global), 101% for people of color to white (U.S.), 100% for Black to white (U.S.) and 101% for Latinx to white (U.S.). Additionally, the ratio of standard entry-level living wage to local living wage was 134% for NI Hungary employees and 136.5% for NI Malaysia employees. This is equivalent to an entry-level job in Austin, Texas, paying approximately $24.50 an hour.

Conducted Lifecycle Analysis of NI Products’ Environmental Impact.
To support its 2030 goal to pursue circular design improvements, NI conducted a lifecycle analysis of its products’ environmental impact. The company found that improving energy efficiency is its biggest opportunity to design products that reduce its customers’ footprint.

This complements NI’s efforts to reduce its operational carbon footprint. Key 2021 achievements in this area include sourcing 35.5% of electricity from renewables and designing 113,542 square feet (more than an average New York City block) of new buildings and remodels to LEED and WELL standards. NI now has three LEED-certified buildings and four others designed to LEED standards (including a new Penang facility opening later this year).

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems take to the road.

NI and key partners have announced the deployment of a fleet of vehicles in Europe, the United States and China that will enable ADAS/Autonomous Driving engineering teams to address top challenges related to data volume, quality, access and utilization.

The vehicles are equipped with the high-performance in-vehicle data recording and storage solution from NI and Seagate Technology, with integration services from ADAS experts Konrad Technologies and VSI Labs. The collaboration further enables a connected workflow by combining best-in-class technologies across the global ecosystem.

Ensuring the safe operation of all levels of automated driving is paramount to consumer adoption and acceptance of the technology. In addition engineering teams struggle with the need for vast amounts of high-quality data to train, test and ensure higher validation test coverage of their perception algorithms and hardware.

“ADAS data recording is one of the most complex challenges for the ADAS and AD domain, as data from multiple sensor modalities (camera, radar, lidar, ultrasonics, infrared, IMUs/INS, GNSS and vehicle networks) must be logged synchronously and analyzed together to train and validate the performance of safety functions and features,” said Drita Roggenbuck, senior vice president and general manager, Transportation, at NI. “We are excited to team up with other forward-thinking companies across the ADAS and AD ecosystem to provide a solution to this challenge and bring the promise of autonomous driving safer and faster to the road.”

Through this initiative, NI and its collaborators will research, develop, and demonstrate industry leading capabilities involved in recording high-quantity and high-quality sensor data in the field, efficient data movement via data transfer services and increased data utilization for training, analysis and validation of algorithms in the lab.

“This collaboration is a great step forward for the development of the PXI high-performance data-logging system. Synchronized collecting of real-world scenario data from several sensors and vehicle ADAS ECUs is essential to improve the performance of autonomous driving vehicles,” said Michael Konrad of Konrad Technologies. “This data can be used for the data replay to ADAS ECUs to test perception algorithms and to improve the overall performance.”

This initiative builds on the existing work between NI, Seagate Technology and Konrad Technologies, and announces a new collaboration with US-based ADAS research firm, VSI Labs. VSI Labs will conduct research while driving their ADAS recording-equipped vehicle across the United States in an effort to improve the use of data across the entire ADAS an AD engineering workflow. The data collected on the road will also help NI and these companies further evolve their joint solutions, ranging from data recording, simulation, digital twins, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

EV Testing capability.

NI has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the test systems business of Kratzer Automation AG, a European leader in providing holistic customer solutions for electrification (EV). This agreement further expands NI’s investment in the high growth area of vehicle electrification and enhances customer connections with key original equipment manufacturers (OEM).

By providing EV testing software and fully integrated test systems, NI will help enable customers to achieve the scale at which the EV market is growing, driven by consumer demand, global regulations, and the push for sustainable transportation. NI tests all critical components of EV including battery, inverter, and engine control. The combined strength of NI’s flexible EV Hardware and software test platform with Kratzer Automation AG’s application-specific EV software and integration capabilities will provide holistic customer solutions that will enable faster responses to changing test needs, accelerating time to market and lowering total cost of test for a broader range of customers.

The addition of the products, service capability and experienced team from Kratzer Automation AG will help strengthen our ability to provide complete customer-centric solutions direct to automotive OEMs and further expand our serviceable market and customer footprint in the fast-growing area of electrification,” said Drita Roggenbuck, NI Sr. Vice President and General Manager, Transportation. “This is another example of prioritizing inorganic investments that accelerate the growth areas of our business.”

The transaction is expected to add approximately 2 per cent to revenue in 2022. There should be minimal cost synergies, due to the complementary nature of the acquired business relative to NI’s transportation business. We expect this transaction to become accretive in year two through expected revenue synergy. NI will fund this transaction through cash drawn from its existing revolving credit facility. The deal is subject to statutory approvals and is expected to close in Q2 2022 with approximately 200 employees joining NI.

The focus of this acquisition is to accelerate NI’s ability to serve customers in high growth EV applications. This acquisition further strengthens the company’s ability to achieve the 2022 targets of 16 per cent to 18 per cent year over year revenue growth and we remain committed to our goal of 20 per cent non-GAAP operating margin.

NI has officially closed the purchase of Heinzinger Automotive GmbH, the Electronic Vehicle (EV) Systems business of Heinzinger electronic GmbH, a European leader in high-current and high-voltage power systems.

This acquisition further expands NI’s portfolio of electrification, battery test, and sustainable energy capabilities, and broadens reach to customers. By providing critical power level test systems, NI will enable customers to achieve the scale at which the EV market is growing, driven by consumer demand, global regulations, and the push for sustainable transportation. NI and Heinzinger Automotive GmbH serve highly complementary positions in testing components used in the automotive industry to rapidly innovate to electrify vehicles and achieve vision zero. The combined strength of NI’s flexible EV test platform with Heinzinger’s high voltage power supply systems and expertise will optimize test performance and enable faster responses to changing test needs, accelerating time to market and lowering total cost of test for a broader range of customers.

Acquisitions strengthen position in electrification and battery test .

NI (National Instruments) has acquired NH Research, LLC, a leader in high power test and measurement applications such as electric vehicles (EV) and batteries. The transaction closed on October 19, 2021. NI is also announcing that it recently entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the EV Systems business of Rosenheim, German-based Heinzinger GmbH, a European leader in high-current and high-voltage power systems and this deal is expected to close in Q1 2022.
