Breakthrough light source for spectroscopy applications.

Combines high brightness and high spectral stability enabling high sensitivity & short integration times

SuperLight Photonics has announced a major advancement in industrial spectroscopy with its compact, high-performance light source, purpose-built for the most demanding high-speed measurement applications.

Spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique that measures how materials interact with light - through absorption, transmission, or emission - providing detailed insights into their chemical composition and physical properties.

Many of today’s spectroscopy systems use halogen light sources, which couple poorly into optical fibers, resulting in significant power loss. To compensate, they require long integration times, making them unsuitable for fast-paced industrial or medical applications. Wideband lasers offer far more efficient fiber coupling, delivering significantly higher brightness than halogen sources. However, traditional wideband lasers suffer from spectral instability, which often requires averaging across thousands of pulses. This again limits their use in high-speed industrial environments where real-time performance is critical.

Designed to transform spectroscopy in production environments, SuperLight Photonics’ latest solution delivers exceptional results compared to traditional light sources. Its spectral stability is unprecedented relative to legacy supercontinuum lasers, and its brightness outclasses halogen-based alternatives. Its combination of high sensitivity, short integration times, and its miniaturized, portable form factor enables rapid inline spectroscopy analysis.

Jeroen Biesterbos, CCO of SuperLight Photonics states: “Our technology delivers an alternative light source to traditional halogen and laser-based spectroscopy systems. By combining exceptional spectral stability, high brightness, and a compact form factor, we enable real-time, inline testing and analysis, bringing high-performance spectroscopy directly to the production line for demanding industrial applications.”

Key advantages of the SLP-1050 Wideband Light Source:

  • Fast, real-time measurements to support high-throughput industrial processes
  • Superior spectral stability, the SLP-1050 improves spectral stability by an order of magnitude vs. legacy supercontinuum sources
  • Class IIIb laser enables use in manufacturing environments with minimal safety requirements, allowing operation by non-specialist personnel
  • Effortless integration for easy adoption in OEM and industrial setups
  • Compact design optimized for space-constrained setups and integration into portable or mobile instruments
  • Ideal for inline spectroscopy, ensuring process control without interruption

"This new generation of wideband light source is set to drive higher quality control standards in sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and materials manufacturing."

Object detection.

Optical sensors feature enhanced detection capabilities and faster commissioning.

The Power PinPoint LED from Leuze emits the maximum light power from a very small surface. The new light source technology can be used to finely position stacker cranes, among other things, using diffuse reflection sensors.

Aligning and commissioning sensors is often very time-consuming. The Power PinPoint LED from Leuze now makes this much quicker and easier. The sensors’ light-emitting diode emits its maximum light power from a very small surface. The Power PinPoint LED generates a light spot that maintains its size, shape and homogeneity over the sensor's entire working range enabling simple and fast commissioning. This technology also increases process reliability through precise detection. The innovative light source is available for the first time with Leuze’s new 33C and 35C sensor series as well as the 25C, 3C and 5B diffuse sensor series.

Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors achieve a higher function reserve with Power PinPoint LEDs, especially with small reflectors. Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors with Power PinPoint LEDs are ideal for object detection in harsh food industry environments.

Small, bright and precise.
Sensors with Power PinPoint LEDs generate a small, round light spot with sharply defined contours. This gives the sensors extremely reliable detection capabilities and enables precise start and end detection of an object with pinpoint response behaviour during object tracking. Even small objects are optimally detected by sensors with Power PinPoint LED thanks to their precise detection capability. Another advantage is that Retro-reflective sensors with Power PinPoint LEDs have higher function reserves for applications with small reflectors or large distances. Also, several through-beam photoelectric sensors can be used in parallel with increased detection reliability as their compact light beam minimizes diffused light. The Power PinPoint LED also reduces the possibility of unwanted reflection to ensure highly reliable detection.

Throughbeam photoelectric sensors also demonstrate the innovative light source’s strengths. Sensors with the Power PinPoint LED provide extremely reliable detection even in confined spaces – for example battery cells in a filling station.

The Power PinPoint LED is already used in the 33C and 35C sensor series, amongst others. Both series’ ranges include diffuse sensors, retro-reflective sensors and through-beam photoelectric sensors in smooth stainless-steel housings. These are particularly suitable for hygiene-sensitive production and packaging processes. Therefore, they can be used for almost all applications in harsh, wet or hygiene-sensitive environments. The sensors can withstand high mechanical loads and intensive cleaning processes. The 33C and 35C series also include special solutions for packaging processes – including sensors for detection through film, clear glass or PET.

Touchless control.

A new addition to Omron's B5W series of optical sensors has been announced. The new B5W-DB diffuse reflector sensor has a longer sensing distance of 550mm, longer than light convergent resistance sensors of the same size making it ideal for COVID safe user interfaces.

The Omron B5W-DB features enhanced disturbance light resistance, making the product less susceptible to ambient light such as sunlight. The sensor can be mounted from four directions and it operates on an impressively low current consumption of 20mA maximum.

The new diffuse reflector sensor opens itself up to applications in washroom equipment, sterilization equipment and entry control systems. Touchless sensors have a lower infection risk, making them COVID-secure and giving peace of mind to patrons using facilities in washrooms and other public spaces. They can also be used to activate security and door entry systems when an individual is seeking admission, and to operate sterilization equipment reducing the risk of cross-infection.

Omron B5W sensors are particularly effective at identifying black, transparent, reflective and other hard to detect surfaces, and the new range also features enhanced performance in this area.

In addition to the B5W-DB, the miniature B5W-LB2101 and LB2112 are still available with analogue or digital outputs with a sensing range of 10-55mm for white paper, falling to 10-40mm for black. These devices are sized at 40 x 8.4 x 15.9 mm. For applications requiring an even and more compact solution, the super-miniature B5W-LB1112 is just 26 x 8.4 x 13mm. It offers a sensing distance of 2-10mm for white paper and 3-8mm for black. All digital devices are offered in light-on and light-off form and are sealed to IP50.

Award for white light source and IR emitter in one.

LaserLight SMD W-IR, the world's first white light chip with a switching function, received the Prism Award 2021 from SPIE. On command, the light source transforms into an IR emitter with 905 nm or 850 nm. Both light sources are housed on the same 7 × 7 mm chip. SMDs are optionally available with a starboard to facilitate mounting on the circuit board.

This chip is distributed in Europe and the USA by Laser Components.

With a luminous flux of 450 lumens and a luminance of 1000 Mcd / m², the KYOCERA SLD Laser product offers all the advantages of LaserLight white light technology, such as a long range and narrow beam angle, even in this dual function. The IR wavelengths are emitted with an output power of 250 mW.

The IR wavelengths of the SMD W-IR are mainly used in motion sensors, night vision cameras, and other professional security systems. This new development opens up numerous application possibilities. Instead of placing motion sensors and lighting in two different components, one element can perform both functions. For example, a surveillance camera automatically illuminates the corresponding area as soon as it detects something suspicious.

Light & vision sensors.

The light section sensors from the Pepperl+Fuchs SmartRunner range uniquely combine a high-precision light section sensor and vision sensor into one compact device.
The main part of the SmartRunner technology is the laser light section method which is optimal for detection, observation and protection of even small objects.
These ready-to-use, plug&play devices from Pepperl+Fuchs are optimized at the factory for a specific field of work. Unlike conventional "general purpose" devices, commissioning and parameterization is extremely simple to carry out using teach-in or via data matrix control codes, and does not require trained and qualified personnel.

Thanks to powerful LED lighting, SmartRunner devices are capable of capturing images for the visual documentation of errors, process conditions and quality attributes. The integrated data matrix decoder allows the user to parameterize the sensor simply via data matrix control codes - without using a PC. The light section sensors supply the detection result as a good or bad signal to the switching outputs, which can be processed using any control panel.

The first representatives of the device family to be available are the SmartRunner "Matcher" and the SmartRunner "Detector". The Matcher is optimized to recognize a previously taught-in reference contour. Typical tasks include checking the position and accuracy of objects with high precision, to verify whether the robot can grasp body components, for example.

In contrast, the SmartRunner Detector monitors the taught-in scene for the entry of foreign bodies that pose a danger to sensitive machine parts, such as expensive lenses and precision tools. It detects objects with a size range of up to 1 mm with high accuracy, using a trapezoidal measuring range that is 350 mm wide and 700 mm deep.

The SmartRunner has numerous areas of use, such as in the automotive industry and in many areas of plant and mechanical engineering.

Latest lighting in tried & tested format!

Despite a familiar appearance due to their tried-and-tested fitting design, the 6002 and 6402 series linear luminaires from Stahl, use the latest LED technology inside. Suitable for ceiling installation, use as pendant lights, or pole mounting, these explosion-proof devices enable particularly energy-efficient general lighting in zones 1, 21, 2 and 22. Their familiar form factor ensures that changing over from traditional linear luminaires with fluorescent tubes to LED light sources is an especially straightforward process. In photometric terms, one 52 W luminaire is fully equivalent to two conventional 36 W fluorescent lamps. However, up to 100,000 hours of operation mean they achieve a far superior service life, as well as a high luminous flux of up to 5800 lm and excellent luminaire efficiency of well over 100 lm per W.

In addition, thanks to their slim, low-profile GRP housing, the lights weigh at least one third less than widely available competing products in the same class. Series 6002 models feature "increased safety" (Ex e) type of protection, while 6402 series luminaires are "non-sparking" (Ex nA). Notable for their very robust IP66/IP67 design, the products can be used at environmental temperatures ranging from -30 °C to +55 °C. Both series feature very economical 28 W or 52 W standard versions. They are available with or without diffusers in lengths of 700 mm and 1310 mm. The current R. STAHL lighting solutions campaign provides instructive information on all crucial benefits of LED lighting compared with conventional light.

The campaign website not only features background information on LED technology and the latest news on lighting solutions, but also a series of action-packed short clips showing luminaire operation in truly extreme conditions.

• Stahl products are marketed in Ireland from Douglas Controls & Automation.

Set Polarisation in Single-mode Fibres in a Targeted Manner.

In optical telecommunications and fibre sensor technology, it is often necessary to determine the polarisation of light in a fiber and influence it in a targeted manner in order to minimize polarisation-dependent effects, for example.

Laser Components offers the deterministic polarization controller PSY-201 PolaFlex™ from General Photonics that makes it possible to adjust the polarization of light in 9/125 μm single-mode fibres in a targeted manner. This is achieved through the combination of a polarisation controller and an inline polarimeter with sophisticated control algorithms. The PolaFlex™ modulates fluctuations in the input polarisation to achieve the desired and stabilised polarisation state at the instrument’s output.

It can also be used as a polarimeter to determine the current state of polarisation (SOP) and measure the degree of polarisation (DOP). As a polarisation synthesiser, it produces any state desired or runs preprogrammed polarisation traces on the Poincaré sphere. Alternatively, the PolaFlex™ can also be used as a polarisation scrambler.

The PolaFlex™ is used in optical transmission technology or fibre sensor technology to characterise the polarisation properties of optical components and receivers, to monitor the current state of polarisation, or to measure the polarisation extinction ratio.

Bright ideas for measuring!

IO-Link Provides Measurement Output Data in Millimeters

The days of complex single-beam evaluations for standard tasks and cumbersome configuration are over. The new LGM Series measuring light grid is the latest member in the Pepperl+Fuchs family of automation light grids.
The new LGM Series measuring
light grids provide the measured
values directly in millimeters

"What makes this product stand head and shoulders above other measuring light grids on the market are the 16 predefined measuring options that are integrated into the unit," says Carsten Roth, Product Manager. "Users can select the optimum mode for their application from the evaluation methods and receive direct measured values in millimeters, such as the object height, lowest or highest object position, sum, average, etc."

The values are digitally transmitted at extremely fast cycle times, even with beam crossover activated, using IO-Link, which enables convenient commissioning and maintenance from the control level. Parameterization and configuration are completed via a PC—no external programmer, no additional software.

The LGM light grids have an ultra-low profile to fit into tight spaces. Innovative, tool-free mounting accessories make installation, alignment, and replacement fast and easy. The IP67 aluminum housing withstands harsh environmental conditions even at cold-storage temperatures.
The LGM is available with various resolutions and field heights up to 3200 mm, permitting large measuring ranges.

"Unlike complex products with single-beam output that evaluate each beam," says Roth, "these measuring light grids provide measured values in millimeters without time-consuming calculations and set new standards with their compact design, functionality, and unique price/performance ratio."

Smart light!

The new IO-Link Smart Light from Balluff is equipped with all features for fundamentally revolutionizing the signal light sector. It is the first light that can be flexibly adapted to nearly every requirement without complex configuration via hardware. The otherwise typical costly combination of different-colored modules to form a light is no longer needed as this device can also be adapted to its new task ad hoc on-the fly via the controller. Even solutions that can be set by means of DIP switches are not much of an alternative as they cannot be changed during running operation.

The Balluff Smart Light is a true multi-talent, as it can do much more than signal the system operator certain predefined operating states with just three colors. Even tendencies, developments and trends of physical values can be represented. Temperature states, fill levels of systems or even the position of a carriage via a position sensor system can be visualized on the column, which may be up to 20 LEDs tall.

For connection and installation, just one simple, unshielded, three-wire sensor cable – as is typical for IO-Link – is needed, and already the LED signal column offers maximum functionality and previously unimagined possibilities with its three operating modes "Stacklight", "Level" and "Run".

Light barrier shines

SmartReflect by Baumer, the light barrier without reflector, keeps on wowing the market. The innovative sensors were recognised with the “New Product Innovation Award” by the Frost & Sullivan analyst after a qualified research of the light barriers market.

Award ceremony for the New Product Innovation Award for the SmartReflect light barrier (from left): Christian Adolph (Head of Group Marketing Baumer), Dr. Oliver Vietze (CEO Baumer) and Noel Anderson ( Vice President - Growth Partnership Services - Europe, Israel and Africa , Frost & Sullivan)
SmartReflect by Baumer brings numerous benefits for industrial customers and is a proof of how technological innovations can significantly improve productivity in manufacturing, stated Frost & Sullivan.

“Baumer has developed an innovative SmartReflect for diverse industrial environments to address the need for a robust light barrier solution, which would not have the disadvantages of conventional sensors available in the market.” noted Emil Lazarski, Research Analyst Frost & Sullivan.

With the SmartReflect light barriers, the light beam - in contrast to a retro-reflective or through beam sensor - is set up between the sensor and a machine part, for example. An object interrupts the light beam and triggers the sensor. The only condition is that there must be a background, for example any machine part, in the sensing distance of the sensor. In this way the separate reflector becomes superfluous and a common weak point is rectified. Special SmartReflect variants can use the same principle to detect transparent objects like bottles, trays or even foils.

Frost & Sullivan also underlined the aspects of cost efficiency provided by the SmartReflect sensors: “This product is capable of enabling a very high ROI (return of investment) due to savings in maintenance costs,” stated Lazarski. “As there is no need to replace reflectors, downtime is reduced and productivity is improved. SmartReflect not only ensures substantial reduction in operating costs, but also cost savings due to easier installation, commissioning and alignment.”

Dr. Oliver Vietze, CEO of Baumer Group, expressed his appreciation for the award: “It is Baumer’s commitment to be innovation driver on the sensor market, and the award is giving impressive proof of our endeavors."

An innovation is only as good as rated by the customers for its additional product benefit. This time again, the force behind SmartReflect were the customers. The initial spark for SmartReflect came from the food & beverage industry where demanding hygienic standards caused many problems to the reflector of conventional solutions. “ We listened carefully and worked on a novel approach ” noted Vietze. “This is how SmartReflect was born, the light barrier without separate reflector. Thanks to measurable product benefits, our SmartReflect sensors are experiencing greatest interest also in many other application fields in the handling and packaging industry as well as logistics”.

Phosphor characterisation

Edinburgh Instruments has helped one of its customers, Leuchtstoffwerk Breitungen GmbH, to better characterise its phosphor products. A software wizard has been developed for the customer to allow spectral data produced by the FLS920-s Fluorescence Spectrometer to be presented in the CIE 1931 colour space, both graphically and in tables.

Leuchtstoffwerk Breitungen is a specialist manufacturer of phosphors, pigments and selected inorganic chemicals. Phosphors and fluorescent materials produced by the company are used in LEDs, backlit LCDs, Laser Phosphor Displays and X-ray intensifying screens. The FLS920-s Fluorescence Spectrometer is used to characterise the spectral properties of the different materials. By transforming the spectral data into the CIE 1931 colour space, the software wizard allows the company greater access to chromaticity information for its materials.

Edinburgh Instruments’ Operations Manager, Roger Fenske, commented: “We are always happy to discuss special applications with our customers and prospective customers. Since our range of spectrometers is used in a myriad of unique projects both in industry and research, we frequently customise hardware, software or both to meet the challenges faced by our customers. By providing instruments that meet the customer’s specific needs, we allow them to concentrate on their own work.”
