FTIR analysis expanded.

Laser Components is now the German distribution partner for cryogenically cooled MCT detectors (Mercury Cadmium Telluride – HgCdTe) from Vigo Photonics. This technology is primarily used in FTIR spectroscopy in the long-wave infrared range.

Nitrogen-cooled MCT detectors enable precise measurements at wavelengths beyond 20 µm and meet performance requirements that can only be achieved at very low temperatures (77 Kelvin). This makes them ideal for applications in scientific spectroscopy, gas analysis, environmental monitoring, and industrial process control.

The detectors are available as Dewar assemblies or in flatpack housings and can be flexibly integrated into a wide range of FTIR measurement setups. Large active areas, AR-coated windows, and anti-fringing optimization ensure low-noise and interference-free signal processing. Even weak or difficult-to-detect IR signals can therefore be captured reliably.

"With Vigo Photonics, we are gaining a partner whose technologies perfectly match the requirements of our customers," says Tim Huylebrouck, Head of the Infrared Division at Laser Components. "These MCT detectors expand our portfolio in highly sensitive FTIR analysis and open up new possibilities for demanding measurement applications."

Breakthrough light source for spectroscopy applications.

Combines high brightness and high spectral stability enabling high sensitivity & short integration times

SuperLight Photonics has announced a major advancement in industrial spectroscopy with its compact, high-performance light source, purpose-built for the most demanding high-speed measurement applications.

Spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique that measures how materials interact with light - through absorption, transmission, or emission - providing detailed insights into their chemical composition and physical properties.

Many of today’s spectroscopy systems use halogen light sources, which couple poorly into optical fibers, resulting in significant power loss. To compensate, they require long integration times, making them unsuitable for fast-paced industrial or medical applications. Wideband lasers offer far more efficient fiber coupling, delivering significantly higher brightness than halogen sources. However, traditional wideband lasers suffer from spectral instability, which often requires averaging across thousands of pulses. This again limits their use in high-speed industrial environments where real-time performance is critical.

Designed to transform spectroscopy in production environments, SuperLight Photonics’ latest solution delivers exceptional results compared to traditional light sources. Its spectral stability is unprecedented relative to legacy supercontinuum lasers, and its brightness outclasses halogen-based alternatives. Its combination of high sensitivity, short integration times, and its miniaturized, portable form factor enables rapid inline spectroscopy analysis.

Jeroen Biesterbos, CCO of SuperLight Photonics states: “Our technology delivers an alternative light source to traditional halogen and laser-based spectroscopy systems. By combining exceptional spectral stability, high brightness, and a compact form factor, we enable real-time, inline testing and analysis, bringing high-performance spectroscopy directly to the production line for demanding industrial applications.”

Key advantages of the SLP-1050 Wideband Light Source:

  • Fast, real-time measurements to support high-throughput industrial processes
  • Superior spectral stability, the SLP-1050 improves spectral stability by an order of magnitude vs. legacy supercontinuum sources
  • Class IIIb laser enables use in manufacturing environments with minimal safety requirements, allowing operation by non-specialist personnel
  • Effortless integration for easy adoption in OEM and industrial setups
  • Compact design optimized for space-constrained setups and integration into portable or mobile instruments
  • Ideal for inline spectroscopy, ensuring process control without interruption

"This new generation of wideband light source is set to drive higher quality control standards in sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and materials manufacturing."

Spectroscopic measurement of LNG Composition

Study compares methods for measuring composition and energy content in LNG

Endress+Hauser Raman spectroscopy-based analyzer systems are a reliable and low-maintenance alternative to traditional gas chromatography (GC)/vaporizer systems for liquefied natural gas (LNG) composition and energy content measurement during custody transfer transactions. This is the result of a years-long study of the European Gas Research Group (GERG), representing 33 members from 15 countries across Europe, comparing different methods.

“Raman spectroscopy is swiftly gaining traction around the world as a robust, efficient, and economical analysis technique for LNG composition measurement,” said John Schnake, Managing Director and Corporate Director Process Analyzers at the Endress+Hauser Group. “Our Raman instrumentation allows companies to have confidence in the accuracy and precision of their LNG measurements during critical custody transfer transactions with a significantly reduced maintenance burden.”

Supporting the global energy transition
As the world strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cope with energy supply chain disruptions, demand for LNG as a means to efficiently transport large quantities of natural gas around the world is skyrocketing. One of the most critical steps in the LNG process chain is the transfer of custody during LNG transport by land and sea. At each key point of contractual exchange, fast and reliable LNG composition measurement is essential. Even tiny differences in calorific value can alter the value of an LNG load by hundred thousands of euros.

Certified and validated LNG data
The aim of the GERG evaluation project was to validate the measurement capabilities of Raman technology to deliver reliable, accurate and precise composition measurements for energy calculation in LNG custody transfer applications. During the multi-year study, thorough testing was performed at a baseload LNG transfer facility at Fluxys LNG in Zeebrugge, (B). To ensure the data met LNG metrology standards, reference LNG samples were provided by EffecTech, a leading provider of inspection, calibration, and testing. Measurements of LNG were taken directly in the liquid phase by an Endress+Hauser Raman system comprised of a Raman Rxn-41 cryogenic probe fiber-optically coupled to a Raman analyzer optimized for LNG.

Reliable Raman measurements with lower operating expense The published GERG report, “Raman method for determination and measurement of LNG composition,” concluded that Endress+Hauser Raman analyzer systems offer equivalent LNG measurement uncertainty with significantly lower operating expense and technical expertise than traditional GC/vaporizer systems. Not only did the Raman system reduce the complexity of the LNG monitoring system and have faster start-up stabilization times, but it also proved to have better repeatability, responded more quickly to process changes and required no maintenance during the entire evaluation period (experiencing >99% uptime). These results demonstrate the value of using Endress+Hauser Raman measurement technology for field installations at LNG baseload, satellite, and peak shaving sites, as well as for LNG truck loading and bunkering ships.

“We are pleased the results presented in the GERG study reinforce the value of our Raman analysis portfolio for LNG custody transfer applications,” added John Schnake. “By providing fast and reliable liquid-phase measurement at such vital points in the LNG process chain, our Raman systems play an important role in the evolving global energy transition.”

Deep UV Raman spectroscopy.

ODIN is a new, compact, and reliable deep UV resonant Raman instrument developed by IS-Instruments (IS-I) and TOPTICA for measurement of biopharma products.

The system combines the newly developed solid state diode laser TopWave 229 and a spatial heterodyne spectrometer integrated into a single instrument with a unique all-reflective backscatter Raman collection probe. Sample damage caused by extended laser exposure has been mitigated via the introduction of a dynamic sample positioning stage.

“Deep UV resonant Raman has long been known to have the potential for being able to measure substances other spectroscopic techniques have not so far been capable of. Equally, the instruments currently available are extremely large, and expensive both to purchase and to maintain. This has made the technology accessible only to those organisations with physical space to house them and with significant budgets to operate them. Odin represents a departure from that as itis smaller and doesn't have the internal mechanisms associated with high running costs.”

Dr Michael Foster, Co-Founder & Director, IS-Instruments

The TopWave 229 is an exciting new choice for deep UV spectroscopists looking for a reliable laser that enables the user to focus on their application rather than worrying about the light source. With its short wavelength and an ultra-narrow laser linewidth (< 1 MHz ? < 4 x 10-5 cm-1), the TopWave 229 offers the critical features to meet a challenge such as excitation source in the field of deep UV Raman and deep UV fluorescence spectroscopy.

It was designed for a compact footprint and easy integration. Comfortable, hands-off operation is ensured by fully automated optimization routines for the internal opto-mechanics. In order to provide best reliability and consistent, diffraction limited beam quality (M² ? 1.3) the complete UV beam path is enclosed in a specially sealed compartment.

With its state-of-the-art laser controller, the TopWave 229 offers a wide range of operating options and systems integrators will appreciate the comprehensive command language that enables smooth integration with central control software.

A general description of the instrument is provided by Michael Foster, William Brooks (both IS-I) and Philipp Jahn (TOPTICA) in this white paper.

The technical report describes a new deep UV Raman instrument developed by IS-Instruments (ISI) and TOPTICA, and its first application to the measurement of biopharma products. The instrument performance is excellent acquiring spectra in a fraction of the time compared to existing systems, while its stability, compactness and ease of use are a game changer in terms of deep UV systems. In this note, a general description of the instrument is provided together with a test campaign examining products including IgG and antibody fragments.

The instrument has been demonstrated to successfully capture the Raman spectra of a range of biochemical samples, including immunoglobulin (IgG) at varying concentrations, tryptophan, and a series of domain antibody (dAb) samples. The dAb samples were extracted at different stages of a pilot bioreactor manufacturing process and at varying dilutions. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first time an observation of this type has been made.

Pulsed light sources.

A series of pulsed light sources for time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy has been launched by Edinburgh Instruments. The VPL, VPLED and HPL series of pulsed diode lasers and LEDs expand the range of compact, monochromatic sources on offer, while the AGILE supercontinuum laser provides tunable picosecond pulses across the visible and NIR regions.

Roger Fenske, CEO, said “We are excited to expand our portfolio with this new range of pulsed light sources. This will help meet the ongoing requirements of our customers and will bring added capability and functionality to their work procedures.”

The HPL diode lasers are designed for time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) from picoseconds to microseconds and are fully compatible with Edinburgh Instruments systems. They are the perfect choice for challenging samples with low brightness, thanks to their high repetition rates up to 80 MHz and high-power output mode.

For longer decay times, the VPL and VPLED series may be used. The pulse width of these sources can be varied from 50 ns up to 1 ms so they are ideal for Multi-Channel Scaling (MCS) measurements, providing higher pulse energies than picosecond lasers and LEDs.

AGILE is a white-light picosecond pulsed laser available as a TCSPC source in the FLS1000 Photoluminescence Spectrometer. Coupled to the excitation monochromator in the FLS1000, its output wavelength can be tuned from <400 nm="" to="" up="">2,000 nm removing the need for multiple monochromatic sources.

Terahertz platform for science and Industry.

A new version of Toptica's successful time-domain terahertz (TD-THz) platform TeraFlash pro. The latest system generation, “TeraFlash pro / Dual”, not only improves the bandwidth and dynamic range further, but also enables simultaneous operation of up to two emitter-receiver pairs.

Owing to an enhanced laser concept, users take benefit of even better terahertz signals: The system achieves a peak dynamic range greater than 100 dB, and a bandwidth of more than 6 THz. The “dual” version enables simultaneous measurements in transmission and reflection, or terahertz spectroscopy with orthogonal polarizations. Alternatively, users may choose to connect just one antenna pair and take advantage of the additional femtosecond-laser output for optical-pump terahertz-probe experiments.

A new “wide-scan” option boosts the scan range from previously 200 ps to 1000 ps, which translates into a frequency resolution of 1.0 GHz. At the same time, the system offers maximum flexibility with respect to the chosen measurement setup: With just a software click, the system adapts to any terahertz path length between 15 cm and 110 cm. Thanks to an improved mechanical delay, the system now acquires 95 traces/s at a scan range of 20 ps, and 60 traces/s at 50 ps.

Researchers can thus utilize the same system for applications as diverse as near-field measurements, spectroscopy, imaging, or even in more complex configurations that include a cryostat in the beam path. For even longer path lengths or other specific requirements, Toptica can provide customized versions of the TeraFlash pro.

Due to its versatility, ease-of-use and its excellent signal quality, the TeraFlash pro lends itself to a wide range of scientific applications, including wide-band spectroscopy, metamaterial analysis, near-field studies and imaging of cultural-heritage objects. Outside of academic research, it is also an ideal tool for industrial terahertz applications, such as layer thickness gauging and quality control of semiconductors.

Measurement in all colour scales.

The OMA-300 process analyzer from Applied Analytics is proven in providing continuous, real time measurements in all color scales, including Saybolt, APHA, ASTM D1500, etc. giving an accurate and reliable measurement using spectroscopy based technology.

The production of liquid fuels is a complex process with many variables that will affect the quality of the product. The color of a liquid stream is considered an indicator of product quality. Slight changes in color can be evidence of equipment failure, dips in process efficiency, overheating, distillation column malfunction and more. The Saybolt scale allows us to measure color with a numerical value, and we can correlate the color to the overall quality of the product.

The Saybolt color scale is used for grading light colored petroleum products including kerosene, naphthas, condensates, NGL in midstream, etc. The range of the Saybolt scale is -16 (dark yellow) to +30 (nearly transparent clear). There are several widely accepted color scales, Saybolt being one of them, with the purpose of observing the product quality.

Faster analysis of inclusions in aluminum

Thermo Fisher Scientific has an improved method for ultra-fast analysis of inclusions in aluminum using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The method, which utilizes the Thermo Scientific Spark-DAT option, significantly enhances the capabilities of the Thermo Scientific ARL 4460 metals analyzer, offering a faster and more accurate alternative to existing methods of characterizing inclusions in aluminum.

Inclusions can affect the properties of aluminum, including mechanical strength, gas porosity, machinabilty, surface quality and fluidity, making their control vital in many cases. The Spark-DAT allows ultra-fast counting of inclusions and identification of their type in a few seconds, making it highly effective for controlling inclusions during aluminum production. Furthermore, when combining the inclusion analysis with the standard analysis in concentration, only a few seconds of additional time are necessary. This ability to obtain elemental analysis information and inclusion contents with a single OES instrument greatly reduces investment cost. Moreover the inclusion analysis is carried out under the same conditions as the regular elemental analysis. Sample surface preparation, instrument maintenance and consumables are unchanged compared to a standard OES instrument, ensuring very low operating cost.

The Spark-DAT option on the Thermo Scientific ARL 4460 Metals Analyzer increases the versatility of the spectrometer. From routine use to research, Spark-DAT provides a quick, simple and cost-effective solution for inclusion analysis in the aluminum industry. An application note has been developed to demonstrate the benefits of the Spark-DAT option.

Elemental analysis – anywhere, anytime, anyplace

A transportable version of the Teledyne Leeman Labs Prodigy ICP Spectrometer has been developed to enable high quality laboratory analysis in the field.

Explaining the potential for this equipment, Quantitech's Dr Gareth Pearson says: "Land remediation activities often depend on the availability of fast, accurate test data because, in addition to regulatory requirements, analytical results can inform on-site decisions to determine whether contaminated material should be treated or removed for disposal. However, laboratory results can incur costly delays so an ICP that can be safely transported makes faster onsite analysis possible."
The Prodigy Mobile Lab (PML): Transportable Simultaneous ICP Spectrometer has been designed specifically for vehicle or ship based laboratories and also for safe long-distance transportation. It has a number of advanced features for providing high performance real-time analysis, accelerating data collection and reducing costs by performing analysis directly at the research site or pollution source.

Dr Pearson explains: “The PML is unique because it is the only ICP Spectrometer designed to withstand the rigours of transportation. Engineers at Teledyne Leeman Labs worked closely with truck and trailer manufacturers so that the unit’s integral suspension system works in conjunction with the parent vehicle’s suspension, isolating the unit from potential shock hazards."
A recent order for a PML has enabled one Quantitech client to offer geological sample analysis worldwide, providing fast laboratory results irrespective of location.

Able to measure 70 elements in less than one minute, the Mobile Prodigy’s superior analytical performance is achieved by the high dispersion Echelle optical system coupled with the largest solid-state detector on the market. The result is continuous wavelength coverage from 165 to 1100 nm combined with high resolution for interference free analysis and simultaneous measurement of peak and background intensities.
