Software tool for the centralised management of large amounts of data!

Version R3.20 of its Plant Resource Manager (PRM) software tool for the centralised management of large amounts of data from plant monitoring and control devices and manufacturing equipment has been released by Yokogawa. PRM R3.20 is an upgrade to R3.12 and includes an improved management function for HART® and ISA100 Wireless™ field devices. With this new PRM version, Yokogawa aims to capture a larger share of the plant maintenance market.

Development background
Manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve maintenance efficiency by using software tools like PRM that can centrally manage large amounts of maintenance and other types of data from plant monitoring and control devices and manufacturing equipment. Maintenance personnel use such data to reduce plant downtime and enhance safety by proactively spotting and responding to device failures.

To optimise plant operations, it is essential not only to keep devices in good working order but also to have up-to-date information on device status and maintain records on all maintenance work that is performed. Such information is most useful if operators can view it on screen at their control system human interface stations.

With such needs in mind, Yokogawa has developed new functions for its PRM tool that facilitate the collection of information from field devices for use in optimising device maintenance and plant operations.

Enhancements
1. Quick access to HART device status information
Using the CENTUM VP R6.01 integrated production control system’s N-IO (Network-IO) field input/output (IO) device that was released in February, PRM can now obtain start-up, stop, failure, and other status information from Yokogawa HART7 compliant devices in almost real time. For other companies’ HART5, 6, and 7 compliant devices, PRM can collect information at 1 minute intervals. With PRM R3.12, data collection at intervals of 10 to 60 minutes was supported.

2. Various management functions for field wireless devices
The new PRM version comes with improved management functions for ISA100 Wireless devices. Diagnostic information can be viewed on screen and in real time not only in the PRM window, but also in the operation and monitoring screens of the CENTUM series integrated production control system. The new PRM version also works with the console that centrally manages plant field wireless devices. When it accesses this console, PRM can call up the console screen so that operators can monitor the status of the entire wireless network as well as the status of individual devices on that network.

3. Complying with FDT2.0, the latest FDT standard

FDT2.0 is the latest version of the field device tool (FDT) communications interface that links field devices and control systems. FDT2.0 has entered wide use because it improves device response times and performance. As this new PRM version is compatible with FDT2.0, it is easier now to monitor and set up FDT-compliant devices.

Cloud platform for industrial customers!

Siemens is building an open cloud platform for analysing large datasets in industry. This will provide a platform for data-based services such as Siemens offers for predictive maintenance, asset and energy data management. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can also create their own applications to exploit the open infrastructure for data analytics. For example, data can be analysed to optimise operation of the OEM's machinery fleets (Platform as a Service).

It is intended that the new cloud platform will utilise the technologies of the SAP HANA® Cloud Platform. Based on SAP's in-memory technology, the SAP HANA Cloud Platform is an open platform that enables customers and developers to develop, extend and operate apps in the cloud. "The establishment of the new cloud platform will make a significant contribution to driving forward the digitalisation of automation. Powerful services for analysing data from industry are an important part of our digital enterprise strategy", declared Klaus Helmrich, Managing Board Member of Siemens AG.

This development further extends the data-based services Siemens unveiled in 2014. With these Plant Data Services, machinery and systems data is continuously recorded, preprocessed and analyzed, providing real added value to manufacturing companies. For instance, the "Asset Analytics" services enable companies to increase the availability of machines, production lines or entire systems through continuous online monitoring. Intelligent pattern recognition or simulation is used to identify potential problems well in advance to enable corrective measures before unplanned downtimes occur. "Energy Analytics" energy data management services support plant operators by providing the transparency of usage data and revealing hidden energy savings potential.

With the creation of the new cloud platform, Siemens is enhancing its Plant Data Services to encompass "Plant Cloud Services". Based on the SAP HANA Cloud Platform, an open IT ecosystem is to be created: OEMs and application developers can access the platform via open interfaces to utilize it for their own services and analytics – for example online monitoring of machine tools, industrial robots or industrial machinery such as compressors and pumps located anywhere in the world.

Encrypted communication and the use of certified data centers for processing and storing the data will ensure high levels of security. The latest cybersecurity technologies will be employed.
The open cloud platform for industry is currently in a pilot phase and will be gradually rolled out to further customer groups over the course of this year.

Software Suite maximizes business value with analytic capabilities & access to the Cloud

The new Proficy Monitoring & Analysis software suite, the industry’s first integrated solution for industrial big data management and analytics has been anounced by GE Intelligent Platforms. It allows companies to manage equipment and process data to maximize performance with advanced products that capture, store, contextualize and analyze data and presents actionable insights for fast and effective decision making.

The suite is comprised of six integrated products: Proficy Historian, GE’s flagship data collection software; Proficy Historian Analysis for data mining and visualization; Proficy SmartSignal for predictive analytics for condition-based monitoring; and Proficy CSense to troubleshoot process problems, monitor process health and create close loop process optimization. Two additional products are new to the offering and include Proficy Historian HD that allows storage of massively large data sets in a Hadoop cluster, and Proficy Knowledge Center, a console that ties the solution together with process visibility, asset health assessment and process optimization.

GE’s Proficy Historian HD is the first solution to combine industrial data and analytics with elastic capacity creating a Big Data solution built on Hadoop; the first step toward GE’s vision for the Industrial Internet. The software facilitates advanced analytics on industrial big data to improve process performance, troubleshoot process problems, and predict and prevent asset failures. Built collaboratively with GE’s Software Center of Excellence, Historian HD enables users to bring together an entire set of historical time-series data while reducing data storage costs by as much as 85%.

“GE manages 5 TB of new time-series data per day,” said Brian Courtney, General Manager of GE Intelligent Platforms’ Industrial Data Intelligence Software group. “Our experience in big data and analytics that maximize equipment and process performance mitigates the risk for other companies.

“We use the software ourselves in our own Monitoring & Diagnostics centers to manage trillions of dollars in asset value,” he continued. “Today, in the GE Industrial Performance and Reliabilty Center, GE engineers monitor thousands of mission critical assets for our customers to ensure uptime, asset reliability overall production throughput."

Another new part of the suite is Proficy Knowledge Center, a model-driven, browser-based visualization application. Tightly coupling an asset data model with historical time-series data, Proficy Knowledge Center supports unified views of process health and equipment health for increasing productivity and decision making. The solution builds on Proficy Historian to efficiently store and display immense amounts of time-series data. Results of data analyzed by Proficy CSense or Proficy SmartSignal are then visualized through the Knowledge Center in model context making it easy to navigate and understand.

The Proficy Monitoring & Analysis software suite can be used remotely to monitor one plant or all of a company’s global operations. As a result, it provides information to increase equipment availability and reduce unplanned downtime, improve yield and reduce variability, and reduce maintenance costs and inventory. The Proficy Monitoring & Analysis suite provides four essential capabilities:

Improved data management: The platform can manage and aggregate all time-series data and process data for authorized personnel anywhere with access to a web browser. Tremendous volumes of real-time data can be collected, archived, and distributed at extremely high speeds and low storage costs—in the Cloud. More data over longer periods of time can allow for advanced analysis and greater insight into actual versus optimal equipment and process performance—leading to a competitive advantage.

Improved asset health: Using advanced predictive analytics and diagnostics, companies can monitor all critical assets automatically and continuously, 24 hours/day. The software “learns” normal asset behavior and detects variances to provide early warnings of impending problems, with diagnoses of equipment and process failures and prioritizations based on severity. Early warning reduces catastrophic equipment failure and enables proactive versus costly reactive maintenance.

Process optimization: The software also optimizes processes with advanced analytics that identify unknown correlations in process variables that can lead to sub-optimal performance. It allows for what-if analysis to find solutions that optimize processes—at the same time optimizing for asset health. Process optimization increases yield, while reducing variability.

Data visualization: The suite features web-based reporting to deliver role- and asset-based information that unlocks the value of the data in context to the right person at the right time.

“This Proficy software suite allows a company to move from reactive to proactive. It allows them to start small and scale to massive based on their needs. And, it allows them to leverage local systems and cloud solutions - all from the same product suite.” concluded Courtney.
