Filter noise out!

The TMF4233 Three Phase EMI Filter with Neutral from EMIS is designed to be used in systems where noise may arise not just from phase wires but also from neutral line, improving overall noise suppression.

Reducing gas process noise.

The Fisher™ WhisperTube Modal Attenuator has been intruduced by Emerson for noisy gas or vapour applications in a wide range of industries. The modal attenuator is a full-bore device offering 15-decibel sound suppression to reduce noise inside pipes produced by sources upstream, such as control valves or other devices. It is installed downstream of these types of devices in place of a pipe spool piece, generates no additional pressure drop, and has no impact on process flow.

Industrial users have long searched for a solution to reduce process piping noise, but until now all solutions have generated significant pressure drop, reduced flow, and/or introduced obstructions. This has led some users to install acoustic insulation to pipe sections to reduce noise, but this can be very costly and cumbersome to install, and it does nothing to reduce internal piping noise. The modal attenuator addresses these and other issues with a drop-in solution, improving worker safety and regulatory compliance, while reducing the risk of damage to downstream equipment due to high noise levels internal to piping.

Leading applications for the modal attenuator include those where upstream process flows are changed by control valves, pressure relief valves, pumps, compressors and other devices that generate noise. Many of these devices must be installed in lengths of piping with no flow restrictions downstream, and the modal attenuator works particularly well in these applications because it introduces no such restrictions.

Unlike other noise suppression solutions, the modal attenuator does not introduce an obstruction into the piping, so it can be used in applications where particulates are suspended in process flows, and/or where pigging is required for cleaning and maintenance.

The exact amount of noise reduction depends on the frequency of the noise and the velocity of the flow. Estimates regarding the degree of sound suppression can be provided by Emerson experts prior to purchase and installation.

WhisperTube devices are offered in sizes from 2” to 12”, with American Society of Mechanical Engineer (ASME) flange ratings of Class 150, 300 and 600. Pressure ratings match the flange rating sizes, and the maximum temperature is 700 degrees Fahrenheit (371 degrees Celsius).

Flurry for noise and dust measurement!

Responding to a flurry of recent customer requests, Ashtead Technology has developed a remote monitoring solution for the continuous measurement of both noise and dust.

“These are two of the most important pollutants – especially at construction and demolition sites,” explains Senior Sales Manager Josh Thomas. “So it made sense to develop a single system that could accurately monitor both parameters simultaneously and deliver continuous data remotely. Our engineering team therefore developed a solution that combines the key advantages of two separate TSI technologies, and I am delighted to confirm that it is now available to all of our customers for rental or purchase.”

Dust and noise monitoring are required at sites where they present a potential hazard to site workers and the local community. Consequently, these monitors will be employed for health & safety purposes, in environmental investigations and in compliance with planning requirements stipulated in a site’s permit.

The TSI DustTrak & SoundPro remote dust and noise monitoring system is supplied in a weather-proof, lockable enclosure, complete with the EnviroNet software platform which enables users to access the data with any web-enabled device. This wireless, cloud-based management system provides secure access to data at any time from anywhere, and enables the configuration of text and email alerts when noise or dust levels meet user-set conditions.

The TSI DustTrak complies with the MCERTS performance standards for measuring PM2.5, PM10 and total PM across a broad range of 0 - 150mg/m3. The TSI Quest SoundPro offers class/type 2 noise monitoring with 1/3 Octave Band analysis.

The unit can be powered via mains, solar panels or leisure battery, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor monitoring requirements.

Noise, vibration and dust monitoring from the cloud!

The well proven SvanNET cloud-based solution from Svantek,  now offers noise, vibration and dust monitoring with new 24/7 support functionality ideal for large infrastructure projects. The enhanced, all-in-one portal offers multi point internet connection with the company’s high performance instrumentation to provide alarming, reporting and management in a convenient central location.


It has been specially developed for use with the company’s advanced SV 258 PRO vibration and SV 307 noise monitoring stations, as well as its exciting new Met One ES-642 Remote Dust Monitor. It provides measurement status, alarms indication, power source including battery charge and external power information as well as GSM strength.

The new ES-642 remote dust monitor is an industrial air quality sensor designed to provide accurate measurements of particle concentration in both indoor and outdoor environments. Supplied in a rugged waterproof enclosure, it includes an LCD display to provide information about particulate concentration, flow rate, instrument status and power.

Svantek’s SvanNET enables web interface, access to data files in the instruments and status alarms for battery or memory. It sends out advanced alarms for noise, dust and vibration parameters which can be set for different times of the day rather than just during normal work hours. It means emails and SMS messages can be delivered to the correct person regardless of shift pattern.

Sharing access with key people is made easy with Tokens. This feature does not require a password or username to enter but provides a website with live data streaming. Whilst the user is unable to make changes to the project, it is useful for making data more accessible.

Svantek’s IEC61672 class 1 SV 307 noise monitoring station now has the ability to alarm from vibration or tilt detection. This alerts users when it has been adjusted by strong winds or from attempted theft. It can also be alarmed from GPS movement although this is more appropriate for time synchronisation of multiple systems.

As an online solution, SvanNET does not require software installation and is accessible through a web browser or dedicated App for Android and IOS platforms. The responsive design enables use of SvanNET on various devices such as smartphones or tablets.

SvanNET allows usage of all types of SIM cards with the Svantek monitoring station modem regardless if they have public or private IP. Once a card is inserted into the instrument it automatically connects to SvanNET.

The web user interface is easy to use and intuitive to operate. The connectivity service offers management and gives full control of the monitoring system using any web browsing device like a mobile phone, tablet or PC.

The online preview template provides current results, time-history graphs as well as information on status of monitoring points. The preview website can be customised with logos and individual project names. The preview content can be configured in SvanNET interface that works as the Content Management System (CMS).

To ensure reliability and data security, SvanNET has been located on the Microsoft Azure™ cloud platform that works through the global network of Microsoft-managed data centres.

The SvanNET project is an optional feature designed to offer fully automated management of multi-point noise and vibration monitoring tasks. Tools such as Automatic Files Download, Data Storage, Advanced Alarms and Data Sharing for generating restricted access log ins to SvanNET enable unattended monitoring.

The functionality of SvanNET Projects allows grouping of monitoring stations so that alarms and reports are separately defined for each project. The data files are also grouped automatically in accordance with Project assignments.

Noise, vibration and harshness.

Suppressing high-frequency noise.

Taiyo Yuden has announced the commencement of mass-production of the AEC-Q200 (reliability qualification test standard for automotive passive components) qualified noise suppression component, power chip bead inductor FB Series Type T, FB TH1608 (1.6×0.8×0.8 mm). Commercial production of this product started in September 2019 at their subsidiary in the Philippines at a rate of 10 million units per month.


Applications include noise suppression component for power lines used in powertrains and other automotive components such as engines and transmissions, as well as communications infrastructure devices such as servers and base station communication devices.

Traceable calibration of noise & vibration instrumentation.

In a move to safeguard the quality of measurements and eliminate the costs associated with unreliable monitoring equipment, AcSoft is offering traceable calibration of a wide range of noise and vibration instrumentation with a five-day lead time as standard.

AcSoft’s state-of-the-art acoustic calibration laboratory is capable of calibrating a variety of noise and vibration equipment from its subsidiaries, Svantek UK and GRAS UK, as well as instruments from other manufacturers.

The laboratory calibrates sound level meters, microphones, preamplifiers, calibrators and pistonphones, accelerometers (frequency response and sensitivity), analysers and dosimeters.

The company uses the goCA calibration systems from GRAS for calibration of microphones, sound level calibrators and pistonphones.

For calibration of sound and vibration meters, AcSoft uses a bespoke calibration system from Svantek Poland. A full factory calibration is performed on Svantek products ensuring all new instruments have a fresh calibration certificate every time.

A bespoke shaker system from Data Physics is used for sensitivity calibration of accelerometers over a range of frequencies. A Dytran 3123AK reference accelerometer set is used.

AcSoft’s equipment is located in an air conditioned, purpose-built laboratory and is calibrated to nationally traceable standards. Return shipping is free of charge – within Britain – and the company can also arrange collection of kit, if required.

He has served in a progressive series of leadership roles across the industry, including 13 years as the former vibration division manager at PCB Piezotronics (PCB). During his PCB tenure, He achieved an unprecedented 15% year-on-year worldwide growth metric across all product lines of responsibility, while continuing to evolve the company’s shock, vibration and acoustic sensing technologies for automotive, aerospace, power generation, test and measurement and industrial requirements. His proven operational and executive leadership expertise led to subsequent roles as the president of the Tulsa, OK-based Gunnebo Johnson; and most recently, as president and general manager of Stahl Truck Bodies.

He is Bachelor of Science in Physics from Siena College; a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo; and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Rochester William E. Simon Graduate School of Business.

Noise monitoring terminal.

Svantek has launched the SV 307 integrated Noise Monitoring Terminal (NMT) designed for permanent noise monitoring applications. The small, lightweight system features a new Class 1 MEMs microphone for major cost benefits and sleeve type case for easy mounting.

Protected by an IP66-rated waterproof, removable casing, the SV 307 integrates a Class 1 (IEC 61672) sound level meter with 3G modem for fast data transfer over the internet to PC with standard connectivity. Offering optional airport and community characteristics, a Class 1 MEMs microphone with lifetime warranty enables wide frequency range up to 20 KHz with the measurement data stored on a microSD card.

The energy efficient NMT incorporates an innovative patented system check with an inbuilt reference sound source producing level of 100dB at 1 KHz. As an option, the SV 307 can perform real-time frequency analysis in 1/1 and 1/3 octave bands and save results with the time history data. In addition, it can record the audio signal as standard WAVE files for noise source recognition.

A large colour OLED display and 10 push buttons enable easy configuration of the NMT in the field removing the need for an external handset or reconnection to a PC. The large windscreen is highly efficient in reduction of a wind noise effects even at high wind speeds. Metal spikes protect the NMT from birds.

The SV 307’s waterproof casing can be easily mounted to a post and removed for quick access to the user interface. It also offers protection against extreme weather conditions whilst fulfilling Class 1 accuracy.

The SV 307 has an internal Li-Ion battery and interface for connecting solar panels. A waterproof mains adapter for charging the battery and powering the station is also included for continuous operation in the field.

Svantek’s SvanNET cloud service monitors the wireless communication, powering and access to the SV 307 data. The scope of the basic SvanNET can be extended with multipoint project management that offers data storage in the cloud, data sharing, advanced alarming and reporting features. SvanNET is an on-line solution which means it doesn’t require software installation and is accessible through a web browser. The responsive design enables use of SvanNET on various devices such as smartphones or tablets.

The SV 307 is available with a number of optional functions including an accurate GPS hardware module providing information on the localisation as well as measurement time synchronisation.

The SvanPC++ Environmental Measurements feature is designed for post processing of data recorded by the NMT. It offers a powerful calculator and an automated noise event finder for noise source identification.

The option for 1/3 octave real-time analysis allows measurement of the noise frequency contents and is used for verification of noise sources in the environment. Plus time domain signal recording to WAVE format works during measurement and is logged in parallel to a time history. Once downloaded to PC it can be played back.

The SV 307 is supplied with a factory calibration certificate and 36-month warranty card.

Optical test solutions.

Microlease has added a new manufacturer to its distribution product portfolio: SYCATUS, specialists in noise and delay measurement in optical transmission components and systems. Under the agreement Microlease will sell SYCATUS optical test solutions throughout Europe.

Seminar on noise & vibration.

Outdoor noise and vibration monitoring station.

Svantek has launched its SV 258 PRO, an outdoor noise and vibration monitoring station with a more compact and lightweight design. Specially developed for construction site, tunnelling and blasting applications, this upgraded model weighs just 10kg and is available with 3G modem, solar panel support, advanced alarms and METEO.

Waterproof and portable, Svantek’s SV 258 PRO is battery powered and used for a wide range of outdoor industrial monitoring applications where measurements are required over a period of time, ranging from days to months, and where a hand-held sound level meter taking on the spot recordings would not be suitable. It can be set up to send email or SMS messages when threshold levels are exceeded.

The SV   258 PRO incorporates a SVAN 958A Class 1 four-channel sound and vibration analyser for applications that require simultaneous Class 1 sound and vibration assessment. Each of four input channels can be independently configured for sound or vibration detection with different filters and RMS detector time constants giving users significant measurement flexibility.

This station is protected by an IP 65-rated case containing a lead-acid battery and operating time can be easily extended by connecting an external battery or small solar panel. The intelligent charging unit enables use of a solar panel without expensive controllers and heavy batteries.

The case is fitted with very robust, waterproof connectors (military standard) and has an IP 65 external power supply. The system uses a low noise, hermetically sealed tri-axial piezoelectric accelerometer enabling the outdoor use without additional enclosures. The accelerometers’ signal ground is insulated from the mounting surface and outer case to prevent ground loops. All accessories fit conveniently into a second carrying case.

It provides broadband vibration results such as RMS and Peak or Peak-Peak. Optionally it can use FFT analysis for determination of dominant frequency used for comparison with the BS and DIN norm curves. The broadband noise results can be recorded simultaneously in three acoustic profiles, which enable measurements to be taken with three different filters (e.g. A, C, Z) as well as 3 different detector time constants (e.g. Fast, Slow, Impulse).

It can be easily removed from the case and used as hand-held vibration and sound level meter. The monitoring station uses the 3G modem for the remote communication with Internet.

The relay server, SvanNET, supports the connection between PC and station allowing the usage of all types of SIM cards with the system, regardless if they have public or private IP. The connection over SvanNET gives access to the status of the noise monitoring station via mobile phone or tablet.

Svantek’s SV 258 PRO is available with a range of optional functions including SvanPC++ remote communication software package and FFT for dominant frequency determination. In building / ground vibration mode, the 1/1 octave analysis is recorded as velocity RMS spectrum while the 1/3 octave analysis is available as an alternative to building / ground vibration mode.

Record growth at noise & vibration specialist.

Svantek has reported a 20% increase in sales for the first half of 2016, compared to the same period last year.

Anticipating record growth by the end of 2016, the specialist in noise and vibration instrumentation for occupational health and environmental monitoring attributes this latest success to a series of exciting new product launches, including the introduction of the world’s first personal hand-arm vibration exposure meter. Svantek has announced its summer promotion. Until September 2016, the Bedford-based business is offering 15% discount on its range of noise and vibration dosimeters for occupational health and safety monitoring, including the SV104 personal noise meter and SV103 personal vibration meter.

Svantek’s SV104 is the world’s first personal noise meter to offer octave band analysis for helping to select hearing protection, full audio recording and a colour OLED screen that displays information in both text and graphical form. The cable-free instrument is easily attached to the operator’s shoulder, close to the ear using assorted mounting clips.

It also incorporates a virtually indestructible MEMS microphone enabling easy calibration and integrated tri-axial accelerometer for vibration shock detection. Measurement data is safely stored in the large eight GB memory and it is powered using built-in rechargeable batteries or through the USB interface which also enables easy connection between the SV104 and a PC.

Sales appointment for noise and vibration company.

Svantek is continuing to expand its workforce and has announced the appointment of Debra Gill to the newly created position of Internal Sales Executive.

Debra brings a wealth of sales and telemarketing experience to her new role. Prior to joining Svantek, she was Sales and Telemarketing Executive at Asphalt Reinforcement Services where she was pivotal in helping achieve a 44% increase in sales. She also spent four years as Marketing and Advertising Co-ordinator at Turpin Barker Armstrong.

In line with Svantek’s ambitious growth plan, Debra will be responsible for business development and strategic account management whilst providing administrative and prospecting support to the British field sales team.

Appointment aids noise & vibration instrumentation specialist’s ambitious growth strategy.

Further underlining its commitment to an ambitious growth strategy AcSoft Group, which comprises noise and vibration instrumentation and software specialists, Svantek, GRAS Sound & Vibration UK Ltd and AcSoft Ltd, has announced the promotion of its former Sales & Marketing Manager, Paul Rubens, to the newly created position of General Manager.

In his new position, Paul will continue to oversee the sales & marketing function, whilst taking a more hands-on role in the day-to-day management of AcSoft Group. His primary task will be to further strengthen the company’s presence and growth prospects in British occupational health, environmental, aerospace and automotive industries in particular.

Having worked in the noise and vibration industry for many years, Paul has built extensive management experience and in depth knowledge of the health, safety and environmental technology markets across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Prior to joining AcSoft Group, he spent ten years as Managing Director of a global monitoring instrumentation company. Paul also brings extensive experience of helping businesses target new markets and has a proven track record in setting up subsidiaries.

Noise monitoring at ports.

An increasing number of British ports (and indeed ports elsewhere!), including Felixstowe, Port of Tyne and Peterhead, are benefiting from high performance environmental and occupational health noise measurement instrumentation from Svantek. A fully integrated solution for unattended long or short-term noise monitoring applications, Svantek’s weatherproof SV200 enables port operators to regularly monitor compliance with noise abatement procedures and regulatory requirements, as well as investigate enquiries or complaints from members of the public.

Small, lightweight and easy to install by a single person, Svantek’s flexible SV200 helps ports to assess the impact of sound levels from sources, such as horns, whistles, signals, terminal operations and logistics, on local communities.

The SV200 has its own built-in web server that can continuously provide live, real time data, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to a computer or hand held device. It will send an email or text message if the noise levels go above a pre-set limit and measures and stores results suitable for automatic reports and detailed information for advanced post processing analysis.

Standard measurement functionality includes multi-profile data logging, real time 1/1 and 1/3-octave logging, audio event recording and statistical analysis. Measuring capabilities can be extended with real time audio streaming and weather condition monitoring. All results are securely stored on the built-in 16GB microSD card.

The reference direction is user selectable in the instrument configuration and a highly efficient windscreen reduces noise, even at high wind speeds. It features special rain protection and weatherproof housing protects the SV200 noise monitoring station against extreme weather conditions while fulfilling IEC 61672 Class 1 accuracy.

Weather conditions have a significant influence on noise measurements so the SV200 is equipped with an interface for meteo sensors. With the optional SV205 weather station, the SV200 can measure wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, ambient pressure and rain. Weather data is stored in parallel to the noise measurements.

Svantek’s SV200 features internal heating and rugged dual layer housing with natural airflow enabling it operate from -30°C up to +60°C and humidity up to 100% RH. It has a 2.45 Ah internal Li-Ion battery and interface for connecting solar panels. A waterproof mains adapter for charging the batter and powering the station is also included.

The SV200 features an ‘all-in-one’ design making it suitable for portable, mobile and permanent noise monitoring installations. This means it can also be moved from one location to another whilst still being able to provide information as often as required. A mounting tool for mast or stand is included in the standard package.

IS personal noise dosimeter!

Svantek has launched the new ATEX and IECEx Intrinsically Safe (IS) SV104 personal noise dosimeter for use in potentially explosive work environments. To support this high performance instrument, the company is offering free octave band and audio record until the end of the year.
Svantek’s IS SV104 is a cable-free personal noise dosimeter and can be easily attached to the user’s shoulder, close to the ear using assorted mounting clips. It sets a new benchmark in personal noise measurement by offering a wide range of unrivalled features including octave band analysis for helping to select hearing protection and audio recording.

The full colour OLED screen displays information in both text and graphical form plus offers excellent visibility even in full daylight. Svantek’s SV104 also incorporates a virtually indestructible MEMS microphone enabling easy calibration using most commonly available acoustic calibrators and inbuilt tri-axial accelerometer for vibration shock detection.

The MOLES (Miniature Outdoor Logging of Environmental Sound) system has been launched by Svantek. Low cost yet powerful, this new outdoor noise monitoring solution can operate for up to an impressive four weeks on a single charge.

Using their market leading Class 1 SVAN 971 sound level meter and featuring a weatherproof, robust and compact design with IP65 protection level, the MOLES is a fully autonomous environmental noise monitoring solution that can be easily deployed in the field.

Lightweight and long-lasting, the MOLES’ internal batteries can be swapped without interrupting measurement. External batteries can be added to extend life to eight weeks or more.

Urban environmental monitoring!

Libelium has completed its Smart Cities platform. A new sensor board measures noise pollution, dust quantities, structural health and garbage levels. This board may be combined in a network with previously available sensor boards - for gas monitoring, radiation detection and Smart Parking - thus offering a comprehensive range of sensors for urban use. System integrators can now create a comprehensive range of services based on the Smart Cities platform.

Today’s city councils face many challenges requiring effective monitoring. Noise pollution is a common environmental problem affecting both the quality of life and health. Atmospheric pollution - whether in the form of gases such as CO2 and NO2 or dust - is a threat to the health of urban dwellers by causing respiratory diseases. With many of the largest structures - including buildings, bridges and roads - located in cities, ensuring that such structures are sound is critical for public safety. Last, but not least, traffic management is a major challenge with the need to minimise emissions and avoid unnecessary journeys. Until now, some of these challenges have been addressed separately with separate vertical solutions; but city councils cannot afford to deploy one sensor network for each type of problem.

says Alicia Asín, Libelium’s CEO. She explains, “Libelium is now able to provide system integrators with a complete technology for deploying all the services a Smart City needs using the same modular platform”.

The new sensor board includes four new sensors:
• A noise sensor detected sound pressure level (dBSPL). This sensor can be used to detect noise from traffic and people. It is suitable for creating a real-time noise map of a city.
• A particulate matter (dust) sensor for measuring PM-10 concentrations. The sensor is capable of measuring concentrations down to 0.1 micrograms per cubic metre.
• A crack sensor for measuring cracks in public structures such as buildings and bridges. It can detect displacements as small as 10 micrometres as well as oscillations and dilations. This sensor is applicable to Structural Health Monitoring.
• An ultrasound sensor capable of measuring garbage levels in bins. This can enable waste management services to empty rubbish only from bins that are sufficiently full thus saving time and fuel.

The board also includes temperature, light and humidity sensors.

The Smart Cities platform enables system integrators to deploy a heterogeneous wireless sensor network with a combination of sensor boards for city councils. The platform is based on Libelium’s modular Waspmote wireless sensing technology.

System integrators can exploit Waspmote’s modularity and open source software to create custom solutions for a particular city. Motes or nodes in the network communicate with their gateway using ZigBee radio links. The over the air (OTA) programming capability ensures that sensors can be updated without requiring physical access. The platform’s outstanding low power performance ensures that Smart City networks have minimal battery requirements or can work from solar power.

Libelium recently won the Best of Sensors Expo award in the category of data acquisition at the 2011 Sensors Expo for their radiation sensor board.
