Wireless excellence in automation.

TotalEnergies EP Ratawi Hub has won the 2024-25 ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation award. The award was presented at the 2025 ISA Automation Summit & Expo held recently Florida (USA).

The Ratawi Hub project in Iraq represents a significant advancement in the implementation of safety-critical wireless gas detection systems amidst severe constraints. TotalEnergies encountered environmental hazards and legacy risks, including unexploded ordnance (UXO), which rendered traditional trenching for cables infeasible. Consequently, a fully wireless ISA100 solution was deployed, incorporating hydrocarbon and toxic gas detectors, wireless sounders and beacons, along with a standalone Dräger controller engineered for future integration into the site's Siemens SCADA system. The furthest detector from the control room was over 500 meters away, but it proved to be straightforward for the WCI technology and the Dräger team.

The project demonstrates that ISA100 wireless technology, combined with Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2)-capable devices, can deliver robust safety performance while decreasing installation time, risk and expense. Full SIL2 verification may be conducted subsequently if deemed necessary by operations. The Ratawi installation shortened the anticipated commissioning period from eight weeks to 10 days, reduced site exposure by 60% and attained deterministic alarm transmission with latency of less than two seconds across a 500-meter mesh network.

ISA100 Wireless is an international, standards-based technology that delivers reliable, secure and interoperable networks for industrial environments. Each year, the ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute presents the ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation Award to a global end user company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and innovation with ISA100 Wireless technology. TotalEnergies EP Ratawi Hub joins a distinguished list of end users who have received this award over the past 12 years.

“I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of TotalEnergies EP Ratawi Hub,” said Adne Baer-Olsen from Dräger. “A big thank you to TotalEnergies for keeping an open mind in the solution of their challenge. I also appreciate the efforts by ISA100 WCI for developing the ISA100 protocol with built-in capabilities of cybersecurity and functional safety. Dräger educated the site team on our extensive experience of wireless to allow for an exemption to use wireless for safety. Together, TotalEnergies and Dräger came up with the installation plan. We installed the system in 10 days, and the system has met the needs and is working very well.”

TotalEnergies, as one of the world’s largest energy corporations, establishes stringent safety system requirements. ISA100 Wireless (ANSI/ISA-100.11a and IEC 62734) is an open standard based on IPv6 that offers secure, low-latency, self-healing mesh networks specifically designed for monitoring and safety-critical applications. Devices that are certified in conjunction with ISA100's 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) enable a robust integration of speed, reliability and cyber resilience to protect personnel, equipment and the environment.

For Ratawi, response time, reliability and maintainability were key. Since wireless technology had not previously been employed for this application, the TotalEnergies team dedicated considerable time to assess the Dräger ISA100 solution. Following a thorough evaluation, the system was verified to meet the requisite safety standards, response time and functionality.

This project was undertaken through a tripartite collaboration with the TotalEnergies EP Ratawi Operations Team, Dräger experts and local Iraqi distributor Al Usol, making use of both global expertise and local knowledge.

Excellence in Automation Winner.

EnQuest UK has won the 2021 ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation award, joining a list of distinguished end users which include Fuji Oil Company, Ltd.; ILBOC; BAPCO; Alcoa; Phillips 66; PETRONAS; and Nippon Steele & Sumikin Engineering.

Each year, the ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) presents the ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation Award to a global end-user company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and innovation with ISA100 Wireless technology. This award was presented to EnQuest UK for leadership and creativity in the design and implementation of ISA100 Wireless Applications for Safe Gas Detection.

Join ISA on August 17th, 2022, at 11 AM ET for a live webinar where we will be presenting this exciting case study, “A new approach to gas detection - Achieving a safe and secure system upgrade on a vast scale.” Register here.

Draeger have designed and implemented, in collaboration with EnQuest UK, the largest ISA100 Wireless gas detection system in Britain, one of the largest in the world, at the EnQuest UK-operated Sullom Voe (Shetland Islands, Scotland) Terminal. The system includes 122 Wireless gas detectors and employs dual redundancy, retaining complete safe gas detection coverage following any component failure.

The ISA100 Wireless system represents an estimated 70-80% cost saving, confirmed by the customer, compared with a hard-wired gas detection system due to removal of the cost of extensive civil ground works and above ground cable containment at a site covering 640 acres/2.6sq/kms. This is the first British site where Wireless gas detection is the dominant technology, present on an original late 1970’s processing plant, covering a large geographical area with limited field cabling availability. It represents a huge leap forward in terms of maintaining high safety standards with reduced costs. Wireless gas detection solves a problem SVT had been wrestling with, justifying a large capex spend project on an ageing limited life asset. The system was interfaced direct to the site’s distributed control system (DCS) for operator and emergency response alarm interface.

Wireless gateway module for small-scale field wireless systems.

Yokogawa has developed an ISA100 Wireless™ gateway module for field wireless communications that integrates the functions of an access point and a gateway which will be released later this month (Nov 2017). Compact in size and easy to set up, this gateway module is ideal for building small-scale field wireless systems for upstream (oil and gas field development and production) and other types of applications where data is typically collected from a small number of devices and distributed across a wide area.

Field wireless systems allow field devices to communicate wirelessly with host systems that perform functions such as monitoring and control. There is an increasing need for the collection of data that can help to improve productivity and enhance safety in plants and other types of industrial facilities. For such purposes, the demand for field wireless devices is particularly strong because they cost less to install and can be installed in locations that cannot be accessed using conventional wired devices.

They released the world’s first ISA100 Wireless-compliant wireless devices in July 2010. Since then, the company has added field devices to its field wireless lineup that can measure flow rate, temperature, pressure, and vibration, gateways, and adapters that enable conventional field devices to communicate wirelessly.

ISA100 Wireless systems are fast and reliable, and can link devices that are scattered over a wide area. Yokogawa already offers a range of ISA100 Wireless products that can be used to construct large-scale field wireless systems, and is now adding this product to its lineup to satisfy the demand for a gateway that is suited for the construction of small-scale systems with fewer measurement points.

Product Features
1. Small form factor
Existing field wireless systems consist of wireless transmitters that can measure flow rate, temperature, pressure, and vibration in a production process; access points for receiving signals from wireless sensors; and management stations that function as gateways for the collection of sensor data via access points and send the data to a host system. This new gateway module is able to function as both an access point and gateway because it incorporates a FN110 field wireless communication module with a built-in gateway. *In its original configuration, without the gateway, the FN110 is mounted on field wireless devices and functions solely as an antenna. The FN110 dimensions are unchanged, with a diameter of 23 mm and a length of 90 mm. When used together with an LN90 interface adaptor that incorporates a power supply adapter and a host system communications interface, the new gateway module can link up to 20 field wireless devices with a host controller or other device via the RS-485 Modbus general-purpose communications protocol.

2. Easy to set up
This gateway module requires the input of just a few items to set it up. A clear line of sight between the wireless sensors and the gateway module must be secured to connect to a host system. Technicians who have no previous experience with wireless systems can easily set up this system.

3. Low power consumption
This compact module draws just 0.3 watts of power.

Commitment to This Technology
This new gateway module opens up new applications for our wireless systems. ISA100 Wireless field wireless systems of all sizes can now be built to suit a wide variety of customer needs. Yokogawa will continue working to offer its customers best-in-class solutions that deliver great value by introducing new ISA100 Wireless field wireless devices and wireless system devices, and in so doing will broaden the use of this wireless technology.

Wireless standard speeds along!

The 2017 ON World Report on Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) found ISA100 Wireless to be the fastest growing Industrial Wireless mesh standard, with adoption increasing at 2.5X the pace of its leading competitor.

ISA100 Wireless adoption increased 67% over the past two years. Key factors driving ISA100 Wireless over its competition include flexible time scheduling, software tunneling and support for star and mesh topologies; features which are especially important for growing wireless applications such as gas detection, steam trap monitoring as well as oil and gas wellsite remote monitoring.

This ON World report is the result of a survey of 183 industrial automation professionals. The majority of the responses were completed in November 2016.

Supplementing this survey, ON World conducted dozens of phone interviews with individuals representing leading industrial automation vendors, suppliers, industry groups and end users.

The survey consisted of 36 questions that had up to 11 multiple choice items as well as several open ended questions.

Respondents are voluntary and received a free report for their participation as well as the survey results for their participation.

“The On World report confirms the vigorous adoption rate that we have been experiencing over the last few years,” said Andre Ristaino, Managing Director, ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute(WCI). “We’ve been aware of the growth anecdotally, but we haven’t had objective data to prove it until the On World report was published. The ISA100 Wireless product portfolio has expanded rapidly in the last two years, helping drive end user adoption. New products include the industry’s first-ever full loop SIL-2 certified gas sensing application (there are now three SIL-2 rated ISA100 Wireless products)."

WCI is also seeing new applications of ISA100 Wireless technology outside of traditional process industries. Extreme examples include remote wireless crane operator controls for ship loading and onboard controls for communication satellites. The newest ISA100 Wireless product trend is headed towards miniaturized and low-cost devices (originally dubbed ‘lick and stick’ in 2007 during the ISA100.11a committee process).

Wireless vibration sensor.

Yokogawa has developed an ISA100 WirelessTM-based field wireless vibration sensor with the ability to quickly update data as well as a long battery life.

ISA100 Wireless is a technology that is based on the ISA100.11a standard. It includes ISA100.11a-2011 communications, an application layer with process control industry standard objects, device descriptions and capabilities, a gateway interface, infrared provisioning, and a backbone router.

By providing real-time updates on vibration levels in plant facilities, the new sensor helps users quickly detect equipment anomalies and enables predictive maintenance.

Development background
With a field wireless system, plant field devices and analysers are able to communicate wirelessly with host-level monitoring and control systems. The rising need to improve productivity and enhance safety by collecting more data on plant operations is driving the demand for field wireless devices, which can be installed even in difficult to access locations. Field wireless devices have the added advantage of reducing installation costs.

Vibration sensors are useful for the condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of plant machinery such as compressors, pumps, and motors. Conventional methods for monitoring vibration include the use of vibration sensors that rely on wired communications with a host system, and patrols by maintenance staff to collect vibration data. With the widening use of field wireless systems and the need to reduce installation costs, there is an increasing demand for wireless vibration sensors.

Since releasing the world’s first ISA100 Wireless-based field wireless devices and wireless systems, Yokogawa has expanded its lineup of field wireless devices that measure temperature, pressure, flow rate, and the like. This new vibration sensor will meet the company’s customers’ needs for a device that can provide the quick updates on vibration levels needed to detect anomalies at an early stage.

Gas detector achieves wireless certification.

The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute announces today that Riken Keiki’s SDWL1 wireless gas detector has successfully been certified as ISA100 Wireless interoperable, assuring that the SDWL1 will seamlessly join and interoperate in any other suppliers’ certified ISA100 Wireless network.

The SDWL1 is a wireless flammable gas detector built to extend the benefits of wireless detection into safety applications. The SDWL1’s non-dispersive infrared detection system ensures accuracy while the advanced reliability features of ISA100 Wireless ensure wireless communication signal truancy.

The SDWL1 increases on-site operational safety by enabling monitoring schemes that would be cost prohibitive or physically impossible using traditional, wired devices. The ISA100 Wireless SDWL1 eliminates most of the cable installation needs and reduces implementation time and costs. Operating costs are also reduced because wireless capabilities extend coverage of gas monitoring at operational sites, reducing the need for on-site inspections.

Using ISA100 Wireless networks assures robust, secure and reliable transmission of signals in safety systems. ISA100 Wireless supports controlled latency down to 100ms. It uses advanced reliability and co-existence mechanisms, such as DUOCAST, the simultaneous transmission of duplicate signals across independent network paths. And it features two layers of security, at the transport layer and data link layer. ISA100 Wireless solutions are now available with SIL2 approval.

“Developing wireless technology presented unique challenges versus wired, such as wireless design (high-frequency design technology), radio production, and Radio Law compliance,” said Hisayoshi Kobayashi, President, Riken Keiki. “ISA100 Wireless is an open standard. And certified ISA100 Wireless communication modules are readily available from various manufacturers that already solve these problems. We chose ISA100 Wireless and successfully developed a wireless sensor in a short period of time by using certified communication modules. I think other vendors will find ISA100 implementations to be easy. And because ISA100 Wireless products are interoperable, they can be used by any vendor in many markets.”

Wireless certification Wireless Positioner.

Flowserve’s PMV D3 for modulation control and valve monitoring is certified to ISA100 Wireless™ specification, offering customers reduced operating costs

Flowserve has successfully achieved ISA100 Wireless™ certification for its PMV D3 Wireless Positioner.

The PMV D3 improves operational efficiency by allowing communication to and monitoring of process control/sensor equipment, wherever they are sited, but especially for remotely located valves. It increases the scope of operational awareness in the control room and in the plant when using ISA100 Wireless, which is currently unique in enabling true real-time control. Furthermore, this industry-leading technology reduces the installation and maintenance cost typical of extensive and expensive wiring and marshalling cabinets, while also eliminating operational risks resulting from damaged/ageing wires and corroding connectors.

The unit is the first valve positioner on the market to use the IEC 62734 industrial wireless standard for modulating control and monitoring of valves. This industry-leading technology uses the ISA100 Wireless™ network protocol, enhancing safety via reliability and including features such as dual backbone routers, which provide redundant radio paths, and through user-configurable device behaviors. Independently powered wireless signals protect against loss of signal or power from the plant.

The ISA100 Wireless™ certification provides assurance that the devices will interoperate in any ISA100 Wireless™ compliant network. View the ISA100 Wireless™ certification here.

ISA100 Wireless™ is the only industrial wireless protocol standard to incorporate IPv6 directly as part of its network layer and transport layer. This gives ISA100 Wireless™ the advantage of seamless end-to end routing with “anything anywhere” effectively in a single environment.

“This certification demonstrates Flowserve’s continuing commitment to responding to customers’ concerns,” commented John Lenander, President of Flowserve Flow Control Operations. “The ISA100 Wireless™ technology enables us to deliver best-in-class solutions that address the customers’ need for managing valves remotely in real time.”

“Flowserve is an industry leader in flow control management, solutions and services,” remarked Andre Ristaino, Managing Director of ISA100 WCI. “The announcement of the ISA100 Wireless™ valve control device is an industry first.”
