Intrinsically safe dew point.

Designed for hydrogen, biomethane and industrial gas infrastructure, the DMP370 delivers continuous dew point monitoring in hazardous locations.

The Vaisala DMP370 Intrinsically Safe Dew Point Instrument for hazardous locations has just been launched. The new instrument extends Vaisala's proven DRYCAP® dew point technology into hazardous locations. The DMP370 enables continuous, drift-compensated moisture measurement in hydrogen production, renewable and natural gas infrastructure, chemical processing and other industrial applications where combustible gases or dust may be present.

Growing industrial gas markets increase the need for reliable moisture measurement.
According to the International Energy Agency's Global Hydrogen Review 2026, global hydrogen demand surpassed 100 million tonnes already in 2025. Much of this demand comes from industrial processes where gas quality directly affects safety, equipment performance, and operational reliability.

As hydrogen and biomethane production and other decarbonized gas applications expand, reliable moisture measurement is becoming increasingly important across both new and existing gas infrastructure.

Moisture plays a critical role in many gas processes. Excess moisture can compromise fuel cell performance, reduce process efficiency, shorten equipment lifetime, and increase operational risks in gas infrastructure, electrolyzers, and industrial processing facilities. In many of these environments, only equipment certified for hazardous locations may be used.

Existing measurement solutions often require compromises.
Measuring moisture in hazardous locations has traditionally involved trade-offs. Some solutions require additional protective enclosures or introduce installation constraints, depending on the protection concept and application. Other technologies periodically interrupt measurements during regeneration or heating cycles, creating gaps in monitoring data.

The new DMP370 addresses these challenges by combining intrinsic safety with uninterrupted measurement. The solution is enabled by Vaisala's proven DRYCAP® dew point technology and an innovative drift-compensation solution.

In hazardous locations for the first time.
The DMP370 combines Vaisala’s DMP37X probe and HMT370EX transmitter into a single intrinsically safe solution. Intrinsic safety limits the instrument's electrical energy by design, preventing it from becoming an ignition source in explosive atmospheres. The DMP370 measures continuously, combining fast response with long-term stability, providing operators with uninterrupted gas-quality data without measurement gaps.

"As hydrogen and renewable gas projects move from pilot installations to full-scale industrial operations, the need for reliable, continuous gas-quality monitoring is growing. Operators need measurement solutions that support both process performance and safety in hazardous locations," said Antti Heikkilä, Product Line Manager of Industrial Decarbonization at Vaisala. "With the DMP370, we're bringing Vaisala's proven DRYCAP® measurement technology into hazardous locations, enabling continuous dew point measurement in applications where explosion safety is essential."

Designed for emerging and established industrial applications.

  • The DMP370 supports gas quality measurement and gas purity monitoring across a wide range of hazardous industrial environments, including:
  • Hydrogen: hydrogen production, storage, fuel cell, and electrolyzer output monitoring applications
  • Natural gas and biomethane: biogas upgrading into biomethane, grid injection and monitoring of gas infrastructure, including natural gas pipelines
  • Chemical and industrial processing: synthetic fuels including eSAF, methanol production, pharmaceuticals, electronics manufacturing, and oil and gas
  • Battery manufacturing: dry-process applications where combustible carbon dust may be present
  • Compressed air and nitrogen: inerting, purge gas and hazardous-location moisture monitoring

Continuous dew point measurement at very low temperatures.

Industrial drying processes, especially in battery manufacturing, place the highest demands on dew point measurement. At very low moisture levels, even the smallest deviations can affect product quality, yield and safety. This makes a stable, continuous measurement signal essential. With the TDS501, E+E Elektronik presents its latest development for dew point measurement: continuous measurement thanks to auto-calibration based on a new four-element measuring method, dew point monitoring down to −70 °C Td, and smart protection concepts. The sensor therefore supports reliable around-the-clock process monitoring and efficient dehumidification control.

The TDS501 introduces a next-generation dew point sensor for demanding industrial applications. The sensor enables continuous dew point measurement with auto-calibration and without signal freezing, providing the basis for reliable 24/7 process control.

New: Four-element measuring method.
Typical process events such as opening doors and airlocks or load changes require a stable measurement signal. A frozen or heavily averaged signal during auto-calibration can create blind spots in the process in such environments. The TDS501 was therefore developed around a key requirement in the control of very low dew points: auto-calibration must not interrupt the measurement signal. In highly dynamic applications, control decisions are made continuously. A signal that freezes during calibration can conceal real process deviations precisely when they matter most. To address this, the TDS501 uses an innovative new technology based on a four-element measuring method with robust capacitive sensing elements. The aim is to provide continuous dew point information for 24/7 process monitoring and therefore stable control loops.

Dew point monitoring down to −70 °C Td for demanding industrial drying.
With the TDS501, E+E Elektronik extends its dew point portfolio to measuring ranges down to −70 °C Td. This makes the sensor suitable for applications in which extremely low moisture is a critical process variable. These include battery manufacturing and the drying of plastic granulate. In such processes, stable dew point monitoring helps reduce moisture-related scrap, define safety margins more precisely and control dehumidification efficiently.

Smart protection concepts and configurable filter caps.
Seasonal fluctuations, plant shutdowns or component failures can cause short-term condensation in compressed air systems. The TDS501 is designed to remain reliable even under such atypical conditions and to reduce condensation-related drift through practical design features. These include robust sensing elements, a sintered stainless steel filter and a durable stainless steel construction.

As standard, the TDS501 is equipped with a stainless steel filter that offers a balanced ratio between protection and response time. For cleanroom applications, where particularly fast response times are required, an open filter cap is available as an option. It further improves response time and allows even earlier detection of dew point deviations.

Reproducible measurement results up to 80 bar.
When dew point becomes a control variable, the measurement signal must remain consistent even under changing operating conditions. The TDS501 combines high repeatability with an accuracy of ±2 °C Td, supporting stable and reproducible production conditions. It is also designed so that typical changes in process temperature do not affect the measurement result.

With a pressure rating of up to 80 bar, the sensor can be installed directly where the process takes place. This provides a robust basis for process control and quality assurance in industrial compressed air application

An optimally matched measurement system for reliable performance.
The TDS501 is more than a sensing element in a housing. It is a holistically developed measurement system in which the sensing element, electronics, mechanical integration, installation and adjustment are optimally matched to one another. For users, this means stable, repeatable measurement results and a reliable basis for process decisions across devices, batches and operating conditions.

More sustainable plasterboard.

The manufacture of dry wall, also known as plasterboard, relies heavily on precise moisture control, so accurate temperature and humidity measurements during the drying process are essential. However, process conditions change significantly within a short period of time and this can be challenging for many sensors on the market. Looking for ways to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of this process, engineers at Saint-Gobain in France have worked closely with Vaisala to develop monitoring solutions that help optimise plasterboard quality, improve efficiency, save energy and improve sustainability.

Plasterboard manufacture

Background.
Many different industrial processes involve drying operations, and this is frequently the most energy-intensive stage of the process, so accurate monitoring and control of drying can represent significant potential for improvement.

Dry wall has had an enormous effect on the global construction industry since it was first developed in the early 1900s. Lightweight, simple to fit, moisture, fire and mould resistant, and with good insulation properties, plasterboard has become the world’s most commonly used construction material for internal walls and ceilings, after concrete.

Saint-Gobain is the worldwide leader in light and sustainable construction, with around 161,000 employees and over 1100 manufacturing facilities. As a signatory to numerous global sustainability initiatives, Saint-Gobain has committed to reach net-zero emissions by no later than 2050, and the company’s core purpose is to ‘Make the World a Better Home’.

The development of Saint-Gobain’s gypsum brands began with the acquisition of the British Plaster Board company in 2005. Today, the company is keenly focused on the improvement of plasterboard manufacturing – improving product quality and lowering carbon footprint.

Saint-Gobain has three controls during the drying process – temperature, air flow and air humidity. However, the accurate management of these controls depends on accurate measurements on the air inside the dryers.

The measurement challenge.
Plasterboard is manufactured by pouring gypsum slurry onto carton paper, drying the slurry and adding a second paper layer to form a ‘sandwich’ structure. The gypsum is cured and cut into panels before being passed through drying ovens to obtain the correct moisture content. The whole process can take less than one hour, during which the product can be exposed to temperatures as high as 300°C, depending on the process, and the moisture content of the air varies considerably during the process. “These conditions present a significant challenge for sensors,” explains Jérôme Cantonnet, Drying process Team Leader at Saint-Gobain. “We tried a number of different humidity and temperature sensor suppliers in the early days and found their products to be insufficiently accurate.

Saint-Gobain was one of the pioneers of dew point measurement in plasterboard drying. They chose dew point sensors because they provide an absolute measure of moisture in the air, unlike humidity which changes with temperature. Crucially, there are no similar dew point sensors on the market surviving high temperatures up to +350 °C. Saint-Gobain therefore established a relationship with Vaisala around 2010, working in partnership to adapt Vaisala’s dew point sensors for the specific requirements of their plasterboard application.

For Saint Gobain, it is critically important to be able to assess how reliable measurements are by accessing and monitoring sensor diagnostic data. Vaisala therefore developed a bespoke configuration for their DMP6 dew point, temperature and humidity probe to output these parameters.

Typically, a plasterboard factory needs four DMP6 probes – three to continuously monitor the drying ovens and a fourth for calibration and as a spare.

Advantages of Vaisala’s dew point sensors.
The Vaisala DMP6 overcomes many of the problems exhibited by the early trials with humidity sensors from alternative suppliers. This is primarily because of Vaisala’s DRYCAP® technology.

DRYCAP combines a capacitive thin-film polymer sensor with an auto-calibration function. The sensor’s thin-film polymer adsorbs or releases water vapor as the surrounding humidity increases or decreases. This causes a change in capacitance, which is converted into a humidity reading. The capacitive polymer sensor is bonded together with a temperature sensor, and dew point is calculated from the humidity and temperature readings.

The advantages of DRYCAP sensors are condensation resistance, due to the materials in the sensor, and an additional warming function which speeds up sensor drying in a condensing environment. DRYCAP also provides immunity to contamination from particulates, oil vapor and most chemicals. If the sensor does get wet, it dries rapidly and recovers its rapid response time. In low-humidity conditions, the sensor will auto-calibrate to ensure accurate, reliable, stable measurements.

“Vaisala’s DMP6 proved to be a very effective solution,” Jérôme explains. “It is able to maintain accuracy across a wide temperature range, with limited drift and a very low maintenance requirement. It measures directly inside the oven, so no sample line is necessary, and the response time is very quick.”

Energy efficiency is the major driver for a high level of accuracy in the measurement of moisture inside the drying ovens. For example, Jérôme says: “A small drop in dew point accuracy, say ±2°C, could result in a loss of energy efficiency of up to 10%. This is hugely significant when you consider that our Paris facility has a power consumption of more than 30 MW.”

Heating ovens at plasterboard factories are generally powered by natural gas with electric fans. The implementation of accurate monitoring and control means that the ovens do not have to be run at full capacity, and instead can be managed to optimize energy efficiency. In addition, in line with its decarbonization goals, Saint-Gobain has already fully electrified two of its plants.

And next?
The long-term partnership between Vaisala and Saint-Gobain has resulted in a measurement solution to meet the specific needs of plasterboard manufacture. This has been deployed in Saint Gobain by applying good practice in the utilization of sensors and in the promotion of the energy efficiency objective across the group’s global facilities.

“This is a good example of the ways in which we continuously search for solutions to environmental challenges,” explains Jérôme Cantonnet.

Vaisala’s Juhani Lehto says: “We are delighted to have established this relationship with Saint-Gobain. Not just because it has enabled us to further develop our products, but also because Saint-Gobain and Vaisala share common sustainability objectives. Our core purpose is defined as ‘Taking every measure for the planet’ so it is great to be able to play a role in helping Saint-Gobain on its path to carbon neutrality.”

Dry room control.

The new DMP1 Dew Point and Temperature Probe from Vaisala, is for monitoring environmental conditions in critical manufacturing rooms and spaces. With dew point measurement capability down to -70°C, and a rapid response, hundreds of times faster than other competing measurement technologies, the new compact DMP1 is ideal for dry rooms.

The new Visala DMP1 probe provides precise measurements in demanding dry processing conditions, such as lithium-ion battery production, where humidity control is critical to manufactured battery performance. Employing advanced measurement technology, the DMP1 ensures that dew point conditions stay as specified in all areas of a manufacturing dry room and therefore helps maintain both product quality and manufacturing safety.

The DMP1 can be easily integrated into centralised production, safety and quality monitoring systems. “The fast response of the new probe means that customers’ control systems are able to respond quickly, in a timely manner, ensuring the protection of product quality and safety,” says Juhani Lehto, Product Manager for Precision Instruments, Vaisala. “This means that customers can control any deviations in the dry room dew point efficiently. Quick reaction times translate into improved workplace safety in battery manufacturing, maintaining high product quality as well as avoiding waste in the production process.”

Designed for measurement stability, with long calibration cycles, the DMP1 has a low maintenance requirement, and can withstand accidental humidity spikes caused by humans, machines, or external air conditions.

The DMP1 is a part of the modular Vaisala Indigo measurement ecosystem, offering plug and play compatibility with connected smart devices. For example, it can be connected to an Indigo300 transmitter to display data locally and for transmitting measurement values to automation and control systems. The probe can also be connected to an Indigo80 handheld device for maintenance work, and interchangeable probes mean that downtime is minimized, and service work is simplified.

Summarising, Lehto says: “In the past, dew point control in dry rooms has been limited by bulky sensors with a limited measurement range and a slow response. The DMP1 probe is therefore a major step forward because it resolves these issues, providing process managers with greater visibility of environmental conditions, and more time to respond when conditions deviate from ideal.”

Dewpoint monitoring in gas processes.

Unique industrial sensor that monitors dew point, temperature, humidity and air quality values.

The new AVENTICSTM DS1 dew point sensor, the only industrial sensor to monitor dew point, temperature, humidity levels and quality of compressed air and other non-corrosive gases in real time from one device has been launched by Emerson. The DS1 can help operators detect and mitigate excess moisture in its early stages and prevent moisture-related equipment damage. By optimizing air quality in this way, operators can better control processes, extend pneumatic component life, ensure regulatory compliance, and reduce maintenance and unplanned downtime.

“By having greater certainty about compressed air quality and control over moisture levels in compressed air lines, manufacturers of all kinds can prevent a number of common condensate-related issues and their associated costs,” said Manuel Goerbert, product marketing manager of discrete sensors at Emerson. “The new AVENTICS DS1 dew point sensor allows operators to detect changes in air quality in real time with a single device, so they can quickly make necessary adjustments to optimize production and increase overall process reliability.”

Pneumatic systems power manufacturing processes across the plant floor in most industries, from pharmaceuticals and food and beverage to semiconductor and automotive. Excess moisture in pneumatic systems can cause multiple issues, including corroded components, product inconsistency and erratic processes.

While most industrial sensors only monitor humidity, the DS1 provides precise dew point monitoring that makes it possible for manufacturers to continuously track critical values, address excess moisture and prevent its negative effects. For instance, moisture can affect process reliability by corroding components, washing the lubrication out of moving parts, and extending switching and reaction times.

Ideal air quality is also critical in instances where compressed air may come in contact with consumer products such as pharmaceuticals or food. Condensate in compressed air can cause discoloration, texture inconsistency and bacterial growth. The DS1 provides essential data that facilities need to maintain a stable dew point and protect product quality. And if there are regulations around air quality, the DS1 can help companies meet requirements and maintain compliance.

To support industrial digital transformation strategies, the DS1 dew point sensor easily integrates into existing systems, including the AVENTICS Series AS3 and AVENTICS Series 652 air preparation units, and connects to networks via Modbus TCP (PoE). One of the key advantages of an integrated dew point sensor is the ability to place the sensor – and track conditions – close to the process rather than where the compressed air is generated, which can be far from the process itself and have much different conditions. The sensor element is condensation-resistant and provides long-term, drift-proof performance. With fast response time, DS1 measurement values include pressure dewpoint, temperature, relative humidity, absolute humidity, moisture content, moisture content V/V, water vapor partial pressure and atmospheric dew point. The DS1 is also suitable for other non-corrosive gases, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, helium and sulfur hexafluoride.

Why should dew point sensors have a fast response?

Humidity is the enemy of battery manufacturers, so its measurement and control is extremely important – not just for the plant’s energy efficiency, but also for the quality and yield of batteries, affecting issues such as range in EVs. One of Vaisala’s experts Antti Viitanen explains why a fast response time is so important for dew point sensors.

Humidity control is obviously critical to ensuring battery quality and preventing defects. Battery manufacturers use dehumidifier units (DHU) to ensure that the air circulating in the process meets strict specifications. In battery production, humidity levels need to be kept extremely low, which means that a lot of dry air is needed, and drying requires heat and, therefore, energy. One of the most important ways to optimize energy usage is to measure dew point and temperature and use these parameters to control the DHU.

Antti Viitanen is a Product Manager at Vaisala for Industrial Instruments and is mainly focusing on OEM products/Dew Point and Carbon Dioxide products. He has over 15 years of experience in electronic sensor technology. Antti holds a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Aalto University, Finland.

The amount of heating required changes as the outside humidity changes. On wet days more heat is needed and on dry days less, but the air fed into the manufacturing spaces must be consistently dry. So how can the dryness of the air blown in by the DHUs be kept at exactly the right level without wasting energy?

Accuracy and speed are essential.
In battery manufacturing the sensors used to measure humidity must be extremely accurate: At a dew point of around -70 °C, there will only be 2.6 molecules of water in a million particles of air.

Speed is also of the essence. The rotating drums inside DHUs consist of two main parts:

  • the drying section made of desiccant material that draws the moisture out of the air
  • the regeneration section that drives heated air in the opposite direction to take moisture away from the desiccant material

The segments typically rotate once every ten minutes or so. If the moisture level of the incoming air is above the set limit, more heat is needed to remove the water molecules; if the moisture level is below the set limit, less heat is needed. The sensor technology must be able measure the changes in humidity within the ten-minute window or the opportunity to adjust the heating for that rotation will have been missed. To get around this challenge, sensors that are too slow to detect such changes in time typically average out results across multiple readings. The problem with this approach is that drying cannot be controlled in real time. Lack of control over drying leads to unstable humidity conditions, increased safety risks, and potential negative impacts on product quality.

Fast response time enables real-time control.
The ability to measure humidity variations within one drum rotation, and not just between rotations, is a vitally important feature of dew point sensors in battery manufacture. With this capability it is possible to control the process in real-time to maintain optimal dryness levels in each stage of production and to prevent product defects.

Sensor response times are slower when air is dryer, and faster at higher humidity levels. The extreme dryness required in the DHUs of battery plants makes it challenging to measure fast enough, which means that operators risk relying on falsely high humidity readings. In turn, this could lead to over-drying of the air and wasting a lot of energy. Vaisala claims that its dew point sensors have a response speed up to many times faster than competing products. Accurate, fast-response sensors therefore help to optimize the efficiency of DHUs so that they only dry air as much as is necessary. This lowers both energy consumption and operational costs.

The ability to measure in real-time over a single rotation enables better control of humidity and costs. However, a further benefit can be achieved by comparing accurate data from each cycle, to identify small anomalies before they escalate into bigger problems. This supports predictive maintenance and condition-based maintenance, both of which further reduce operating costs – as well as the headaches caused by potential product quality issues.

In addition to the accuracy and fast response of a dew point sensor, low drift and long-term reliability are also essential features of sensors in environments like battery manufacturing where sensor failure could compromise production quality and safety, affecting issues such as charging speed and range in EVs for example.

In summary, an investment in accurate, reliable, fast-response sensors would be negligible in comparison with the cost savings and other benefits that it would deliver. In addition, at Vaisala we firmly believe that a compromise on sensor quality would not be worth the risks associated with the potential effects on battery yield and quality.

Batteries and humidity!

The climate crisis is driving demand for the electrification of transportation and energy infrastructure, which in turn is accelerating the need for more powerful and safer rechargeable batteries, including li-ion, sodium-ion, and solid-state. However, one of the key issues affecting battery quality is accurate humidity monitoring and dry control during manufacture, and in the following article, Antti Viitanen from the measurement technology company Vaisala, explains why.

The importance of humidity.
Battery manufacture is a delicate process performed in a highly controlled, ultra-low humidity environment. Stable, accurate, fast-response dew point probes are therefore an essential component of control systems that help improve safety, yields and energy efficiency.

The midstream stage of battery manufacturing involves electrode production, cell assembly, and cell finalization. It is during these steps – in dry rooms, dry booths, and glove boxes – that humidity control is especially important to prevent unwanted reactions. These include lithium forming lithium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, lithium salt forming hydrogen fluoride (HF), and electrolyte generating corrosive byproducts. Efficient and effective drying ensures:

  • protection of people and materials, because the chemicals used are sensitive to moisture and present an explosion risk if exposed to elevated moisture levels
  • yield maximization whilst maintaining product quality, because excessive moisture negatively impacts the quality and therefore the lifetime of batteries
  • energy optimization by maintaining dry room ambient dryness at optimal levels. This avoids over-drying and under-drying, both of which are extremely costly

Dew point measurement in solid state battery manufacturing.
The ambient dew point temperature in dry rooms is typically maintained within the range from -30°C to -40 °C, and these low humidity levels are controlled by high-end dryers. This is one of the most energy-intensive parts of the battery manufacturing process, so minimizing over-drying is key to the plant’s overall energy efficiency.

The dew point sensors in the dryer need to be highly responsive to control the dryer quickly and accurately, but it is important to note that sensor accuracy is not the only factor affecting drying efficiency. A probe with a fast response time, and without the complex internal measurement control loops of some analyzers, makes all the difference in dryer and overall dry room control. The volume of air being dried and pushed through the process is very large, so energy consumption can easily skyrocket if the drying process is not optimized.

Newer technologies such as all solid-state batteries may require drier conditions with the dew point temperature as low as -80 °C in individual processing steps. Typically, these steps are performed inside dry booths or glove boxes because it is not usually economically viable to dry the whole dry room to the same extremely low dew point level. Humidity levels in dry booths and glove boxes are therefore monitored at critical points.

Today, the most used measurement device for dryer monitoring and control is a dew point sensor based on thin-film polymer technology. Previous instrumentation suffered from drift, especially at low humidity levels, but the development of Vaisala’s DRYCAP® technology has enabled accurate, stable, and fast-response dew point measurement with minimum drift.

Maintaining accuracy in dew point sensors.
Battery manufacturers use large numbers of sensors throughout their processes to measure, monitor and control humidity levels. The cost of these sensors is negligible in comparison with the value of the assets and products that they protect. Nevertheless, it is vitally important that sensors are accurate and stable in the long-term, so it is important to select the right sensors, and to implement an effective program of calibration checks.

A key factor in choosing dew point sensors is the availability of proven reliability. This means that the providers of sensors should be able to demonstrate long-term accuracy and stability over many years, and in a wide variety of changing environments.

All sensors may deliver measurement results outside of acceptable limits for a number of reasons that may not be immediately apparent. The most important function of calibration is therefore to check results against a known standard. However, all measurement devices drift over time to a greater or lesser degree, so ensuring these sensors are properly calibrated at appropriate intervals is essential if their readings are to be reliable in the long term.

The dew point sensors used in the midstream processes of battery production are sensitive and highly accurate instruments, but calibration is necessary for more than just the avoidance of drift. For example, the accuracy of sensors can be compromised by physical damage or other environmental factors.

Calibration programs for dew point sensors.
A variety of calibration options exist for dew point sensors at battery manufacturing facilities. Handheld devices are available for quick and convenient spot-checking and on-site calibration. The advantage of this method is that probes do not need to be removed from the process and downtime can be kept to a minimum. In addition, some devices, such as Vaisala’s Indigo80, can be used as a reference probe and sent for factory calibration complete with a certificate for full calibration traceability.

Some sensor manufacturers operate accredited service centres to which swapped-out sensors can be sent for routine calibration checks. Alternatively, many battery manufacturers find it more convenient and economical to contract their sensor supplier to provide a fixed price calibration program.

Conculsion.
The purpose of this article is to highlight the potentially serious implications of failing to implement an effective humidity measurement program in battery manufacturing plants. Dew point sensors perform a critically important role, so it is vitally important to install the right sensors and to ensure that they deliver stable, long-term accuracy and reliability. To achieve this, no matter which sensor is deployed, an effective calibration routine is essential for the efficient, sustainable operation of the plant; protecting safety, energy efficiency and battery product quality.

Dew point transmitters.

New fast-responding dew-point transmitter controls efficiency of twin-column compressed air dryers

The new SF82 Dew-Point Transmitter for Compressed Air Dryers from Michell Instruments features an ultra-fast response to moisture changes to increase the efficiency of energy use in dew-point dependent switching (DDS) dryer control systems.

With DDS, the twin columns of a heatless regenerative desiccant dryer switch from drying to regenerating based on the dew point of the air leaving the dryer. This precisely indicates when the desiccant is saturated and needs to switch from the drying to the regenerating cycle, and is more energy-efficient than timer-based switching. As well as desiccant dryers, the SF82 is suitable for a whole range of industrial dryers including refrigeration dryers, membrane dryers and absorption dryers.

Conditions in compressor rooms can reach temperatures up to +50 °C. Michell’s engineers have taken this into account in designing the new sensor and designed the new sensor to operate in these temperatures with no loss of accuracy at its lower measurement range of 60 °C dew point. The new unit has dual analog and digital outputs which are compatible with almost any electronic monitoring and control systems.

Dew point application in Power Station.

The sensor exchange programme, which Michell offers to its dew-point transmitter customers, helped win a major order for dew-point transmitters from a power station in Africa.

The operators wanted to reduce the costs and maintenance time for their hydrogen-cooled electricity generators. One of their major costs was in the maintenance of their moisture sensors which had to be returned to the manufacturer for recalibration and refurbishment. As this could take up to 3 months, a stock of spare sensors was needed to ensure the process could be kept running continuously. The high cost of the necessary stock of backup moisture transmitters greatly increased their overhead.

They selected Michell’s Easidew PRO I.S. dew point transmitters, as an alternative to their usual supplier. As well as its fast response and wide measurement range, the transmitter is part of their sensor exchange programme. This programme is a cost effective way to keep processes running while ensuring the measurement integrity of the moisture transmitters – and there is no need for the additional expense of carrying extra stock of sensors.

The sensor exchange programme is available for the full range of the Easidew Dew-Point Transmitters, as well as the Pura Trace Moisture Transmitters. Customers who sign up to the programme benefit from what is essentially a life time warranty for their transmitters.

The Easidew PRO I.S. dew-point transmitter has a measurement range from -100 to +20°C dew point, with an accuracy of ±1°C. It is also certified for installation in hazardous areas around the world, including ATEX, IECEx and CSA approvals.

Compact chilled mirror hygrometer.

A ‘workhorse’ in many calibration laboratories and industrial settings.
The S8000 RS Precision Chilled Mirror Hygrometer from Michell Instruments, measures dew points down to -90°C (0.1ppmV) with an accuracy of ±0.1°C. However, unlike many other chilled mirror hygrometers in this class, no additional external cooling equipment is needed to accurately reach these dry dew points. Designed to fit into a standard 19” rack, the S8000 is the most compact, convenient and – because it doesn’t need extra equipment to work – the most cost effective hygrometer in its class.

This compact design was possible because of a sophisticated new optical system that detects very small changes in moisture condensed on the mirror surface. This guarantees high sensitivity and fast response when measuring low dew points.

-->
Although referred to as ‘dew-point temperature’, chilled mirror hygrometers most often measure the frost point because the temperatures are below freezing. However, in some conditions, liquid water can exist as ‘super-cooled water’ in temperatures as low as -40°C. Because the difference in condensing temperature between water and ice can be as much as 10% of the reading, it’s essential to know which phase you are measuring. The S8000RS uses Frost Assurance Technology (FAsT) to ensure that ice, not liquid water, is present on the mirror surface at low temperatures to ensure that your measurements are always a known quantity.

Room transmitter for CO2, humidity and temperature.

The EE800 transmitter from E+E Elektronik measures CO2, temperature and relative humidity and calculates the dew point temperature. The versions with Modbus RTU or BACnet MS/TP interface also calculate absolute humidity, mixing ratio, specific enthalpy, frost point temperature and partial water vapour pressure. In addition, they can be easily integrated into a bus system for building automation or automatic indoor climate control.

The CO2 infrared measuring principle (dual wavelength NDIR*) used on the EE800 is characterized by high resistance to contamination. The auto-calibration compensates for ageing effects, which leads to exceptional long-term stability. A multi-point CO2 and temperature factory adjustment ensures excellent CO2 measurement accuracy across the entire temperature working range.

The EE800 versions with analogue output (current or voltage) also feature also an optional passive temperature output.

The innovative snap-on design allows for fast mounting and minimizes installation costs. In order to meet various international standards the EE800 is available in two enclosure sizes. The measured or calculated values can be read on the optional display. An optional USB configuration adapter facilitates easy setup and adjustment of the EE800.
