Detect and locate methane leaks.

Delivering 24/7 Coverage of Methane Production, Transmission and Storage Infrastructure

ADGiLE is a fixed-mounted methane monitoring solution just unveiled by FLIR. Featuring optical gas imaging (OGI) with comprehensive edge detection analytics, ADGiLE is the oil and gas industry’s solution to meeting environmental stewardship and efficiency goals. The system, featuring a pan-tilt gas imaging camera, edge computing device, connectivity, and FLIR United VMS software within a ruggedized package, can help companies address the ever-evolving requirements for reducing methane gas leaks within oil and gas production, transmission, and storage infrastructure.

Designed for wide-scale site video monitoring and continuous leak detection applied to storage tanks, compressors, separators and many other equipment in the oil and gas industry, ADGiLE offers an industry-first, end-to-end fixed methane detection solution that leverages FLIR’s uncooled GF77a OGI technology, and is consequential to industry demands concerning methane mitigation.

This pairs the GF77a with platform analytics processed at the edge to detect emissions through automatic early detection, quickly pinpointing the leak source. It provides the critical situational awareness on the emission event that isn’t possible with other methane detection technologies, such as satellite and aerial-based detection methods. Data is displayed via the FLIR United VMS software back at the control room, which can be configured with custom alerts, areas of interest, and pre-set imaging pathways for a truly automated experience.

The solution primarily focuses on midstream and high-concentration methane upstream applications. It works to detect and prevent high volume emission events, compared to the company's existing cooled handheld OGI technology, leveraging their edge detection analytics built upon decades of detection data and experience to deliver consistent, accurate results. The system increases both site efficiency and safety, as it operates equally well during the day and in total darkness at safe distances, pending atmospheric and site conditions.

“The industry knows FLIR as the world leader in handheld OGI detection, and now they can access lower cost technology via a completely automated, fixed solution with ADGiLE, featuring everything they need out of the box to quickly pinpoint and then fix large methane leaks,” said Craig O’Neill, Business Development Director, FLIR. “ADGiLE is purpose-built for mid- and upstream methane operations to deliver game-changing results to achieve methane mitigation demands along with internal emission reduction goals. This makes ADGiLE a market leading solution for well site operators, compressor stations, and storage facilities that must invest in methane detection and monitoring technologies.”

FLIR ADGiLE uniquely meets the most serious methane leak detection challenges while providing operational insight to understand emissions that are a part of routine industry processes versus fugitive emission events. The system can also help prevent false readings, saving time and resources by avoiding the need to manually investigate and confirm specific leaks. At the same time, it can still detect intermittent leaks that happen and are too often missed by deployed aerial detection technologies using a wider temporal frequency. It can generate situational awareness that addresses the full range of challenges stemming from various methane emission scenarios.

Reliable and accurate flammable gas detection.

The high-performance OLCT 100-XP-MS range of flammable gas detectors from Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection now incorporates cutting-edge MEMS (Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems) sensor technology. Delivering the market’s most accurate readings for over 14 of the most common combustible gases and gas mixes — including hydrogen, methane, propane and butane — MEMS technology adds to the capabilities provided by conventional sensors. Users also enjoy notable advantages regarding ‘poison’ immunity and operating life, particularly in environments that sometimes prove challenging for catalytic sensors.

“Our flammable gas detector with thermal conductivity technology supported by MEMS sensor provides accurate, automatic readings without correction factors, along with automatic gas classification,” says Régis Prévost, Product Line Manager, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection. “Delivering unprecedented reliability and accuracy, the device reduces false alarms thanks to integral compensation for environmental parameters that include temperature, pressure and humidity.”

Traditionally, industry professionals select a flammable gas detector housing a catalytic sensor calibrated for a specific gas, or an infrared (IR) sensor. Although these conventional solutions are still highly beneficial, they are not always optimal. Catalytic sensors require bump testing, for example, to check they remain free from sensor poisoning, while IR technology is unable to detect hydrogen. The use of Hydrogen is rising as the focus to find a cleaner alternative to natural gas continues across the industry, in turn driving the need for high-capability hydrogen detection solutions.

MEMS technology take gas detection to an even higher level of capability, providing precise readings in % LEL correlated with the specific gas or blended gas/vapour clouds present in the environment. By offering catalytic oxidation, IR and MEMS sensor technologies in a single device, the OLCT100-XP-MS represents a holistic solution that provides a revolution in flammable gas detection, regardless of environmental or operational constraints.

Ideal for use in energy sectors, including petrochemical and oil and gas, the new OLCT100-XP-MS also offers multi-gas protection in applications that include lithium-ion BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), industrial manufacturing, wastewater treatment and fire response.

In some environments, extreme pressure, temperature and humidity can damage or even poison other sensor types, compromising performance and incurring unwanted cost. In contrast, MEMS sensor technology is poison-immune, operating reliably with an integral self-test for failsafe operations and complete peace-of-mind.

“With its robust design and highly engineered construction, our low-maintenance OLCT100-XP-MS comes with a two-year warranty,” says Régis Prévost. “Indeed, such is our confidence in this innovative flammable gas detector that users can expect many years of reliable and accurate operation in the most demanding industry applications.”

Flammable gas detection.

Crowcon Detection Instruments has unveiled an important innovation in fixed gas detection with the launch of the world’s first fixed detector with a Molecular Property Spectrometer ™ (MPS™) sensor. The Nevada Nanotech MPS™ sensor has been added to its Xgard Bright fixed gas monitor, which is set to drive up standards in gas detection and safety, while driving down the cost of ownership.

Developed by of NevadaNano, the MPS™ sensors represent the new generation of flammable gas detectors. MPS™ can detect up to 15 flammable gases (further gas species being characterised) at once, quickly and to a very high degree of accuracy.

Until recently, anyone who needed to monitor flammable gases had to select either a traditional flame sensor detector with a pellistor calibrated for a specific gas (and multiple pellistors in multi-species environments), or an improved capability sensor using infra-red (IR) which also requires a separate sensor to be calibrated for each gas.

While these remain very helpful solutions, they are not always ideal. For example, both types of sensor require continual calibration and bump testing and pellistors may be damaged by contaminants (known as ‘sensor poisoning’) or harsh conditions. In some environments this means that sensors must be continually changed, which is costly in terms of both money and downtime.  Also, IR technology cannot detect hydrogen, and both IR and pellistor detectors sometimes incidentally detect other (i.e. non-calibrated) gases, giving inaccurate readings that may trigger false alarms.

In contrast, MPS sensors quickly detect multiple gases simultaneously with no need for in-field calibration. Because the Xgard Bright’s MPS™ sensor is precise, does not drift and does not require a correction factor, it swiftly, clearly and correctly informs the user how close the ambient gas levels are to the lower explosive limit (LEL). This is referred to as the ‘True LEL™’ reading.

What is more, MPS™ sensors cannot be poisoned and require no calibration or bump testing throughout their lifespan, which generally exceeds five years. They are self-monitoring and will automatically alert the user to any malfunction. That spares users the cost of labour, peripherals and downtime, and means that workers no longer enter hazardous areas to check on the gas detectors

It also offers the possibility of huge savings for sectors that find pellistor sensors costly and prone to failure, but which have not, until now, had any realistic alternative.
