Benchtop video measurement.

Compact, fully automatic 3-axis system delivers expanded XY measuring range for manufacturers with limited floor space.

The SmartScope® E18, just announced by Optical Gaging Products (OGP®), is a high-capacity benchtop video measurement system that delivers fully automatic 3-axis measurement performance in a compact footprint.

It combines a generous XY measuring range with a space-efficient benchtop design for manufacturers that need automated dimensional inspection without dedicating significant floor space to a measurement system. Its compact design makes it well suited for production environments, quality laboratories, and other applications where available space is at a premium.

At the heart of the SmartScope E18 is OGP’s IntelliCentric™-E fixed-lens optical system, which provides high-resolution imaging for precise video measurement. VIRTUAL ZOOM™ technology further enhances image detail and measurement capability, helping operators efficiently inspect a wide range of part features.

SmartScope E18 includes a comprehensive LED lighting system as standard equipment. Coaxial, substage profile, and SmartRing™ illumination provide flexible lighting options for highlighting different part features and optimizing image contrast during measurement.

Built for Measurement Stability.
A new, compact fixed-bridge design combined with a heavy-duty base provides a rigid, stable structure engineered to support accurate, repeatable measurements. The system’s orthogonal construction helps maintain measurement stability while keeping the overall footprint compact.

Multisensor Capability.
For applications requiring more than video measurement, SmartScope E18 can be equipped with an optional touch probe, extending the system’s capabilities to provide multisensor measurement coverage. This allows manufacturers to combine optical and tactile measurement within a single automated platform.

With its combination of high XY capacity, automated 3-axis video measurement, advanced LED illumination, rigid construction and optional multisensor capability, SmartScope E18 provides manufacturers with a versatile inspection solution when measurement performance and floor space are equally important.

Metrology Software Capability.
As with all E-Series systems, the SmartScope E18 comes standard with easy-to-use Measure-X software. For applications requiring full 3D capability and other advanced software functionality, ZONE3 software is now also available on SmartScope E-Series systems.

Global sales president appointed.

Optical Gaging Products (OGP®) has appointed Panos T. Angelopoulos as President, Global Sales, succeeding R. Stephen Flynn, who is retiring after 31 years with the company.

Panos brings to OGP over three decades of experience in executive leadership roles within industrial and commercial manufacturing environments. Throughout his career, he has held sales and marketing positions that have continually contributed to market expansion and revenue growth.

He joins OGP from RAMPF Group, Inc., headquartered in Grafenberg, Germany, where he served as Business Unit Manager. Before that, Panos was President, CEO, and owner of Cleveland Polymer Technologies, which joined the RAMPF Group in 2017. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA in Management & Finance, both from the New York Institute of Technology in New York, NY.

Long history of Innovation.

Optical Gaging Products (OGP®) has announced the newest addition to the next evolution of SmartScope® 3D Multisensor Metrology systems: SmartScope M130. For leading manufacturers crafting large, heavy parts, SmartScope M130 ushers in the next generation of enhancements in image accuracy, optics, and throughput in a new large format 3D multisensor video measurement platform.

Occlusion-free automated innspection.

"A new bench mark for high precision is set!"

SmartRay has launched the latest addition to its ECCO X industry-leading sensors. The ECCO X 025 Dual-Head is the first in the range to offer the full capabilities of the X family, delivering 100% inspection at metrology grade level combined with occlusion-free scanning.

While traditional single-head sensors experience shadowing from raised surface areas when the laser hits the target point but the camera is blocked from viewing it, the ECCO X 025 Dual-Head features a second camera head positioned symmetrically to the first, which significantly reduces occlusions and enables uninterrupted visibility even on complex surfaces.

The dual-head sensor ensures accurate 3D point capture across all parts of the sample without missing data that could occur due to shadowing, as the two cameras overcome this.

The ECCO X 025 Dual-Head is the first dual-head sensor to have X capabilities, which include up to 40 kHz scan rate and 4096 3D points per profile. It also comes standard in lc 3R, with higher scan speeds through shorter exposure times.

It is suitable for a wide range of applications that may be affected by shadowing, including the automotive sector, where the ECCO X 025 Dual-Head can meet the high inspection demands of structural and reflective parts like battery trays. In semiconductors and electronics, high precision is essential for inspecting small, shiny, metallic objects, including conductor wire bonding, BGA and also PCBA, and this new sensor is a game-changer in this process.

Laser for semiconductor metrology and interferometry.

Mode-hop free tuning at 633 nm Single-frequency laser based on a DFB diode.

TOPTICA has introduced the DFB pro 633, the newest member of our family of mode-hop-free tunable lasers for metrology. "Our DFB pro 633 provides a mode-hop-free tuning range of 200 GHz. Driven by the DLC pro controller, it is ready to be integrated into OEM customers' tools," explained Stéphane Junique, product manager for the DFB pro laser platform at TOPTICA.

The DFB pro, a single-frequency laser based on a distributed-feedback (DFB) diode, covers wavelengths from 633 nm and 760 nm up to 3500 nm and offers a mode-hop-free tuning range of up to 1400 GHz. It is well-suited for a variety of applications, including semiconductor metrology and spectroscopy.

Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers unite wide tunability and high output power. The frequency-selective element – a Bragg grating – is integrated into the active section of the semiconductor and ensures continuous single-frequency operation. Due to the absence of alignment-sensitive components, DFB lasers exhibit an exceptional stability and reliability. The lasers work under the most adverse environmental conditions – even in the Arctic or in airborne experiments.

Sensor for flow in rivers, streams etc certified.

NIVUS initially demonstrated a prototype NivuFlow Stick in 2018, and received its first order for a commercial product in 2020. This was a response to the demand for a simple but accurate tool for measuring discharge flow rates in streams, rivers and channels. The company has just announcecd that their NivuFlow Stick has received an independent calibration certificate from METAS, the Federal Institute of Metrology in Switzerland.

“This is a significant achievement,”
explains Christian Koch, Head of Product Management at NIVUS. “The calibration certificate resulted from a series of stringent tests, and follows the award of a similar verification certificate from NIWA, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand.

“We already have regulatory customers as well as water companies, consultancies, researchers and academia, but third-party verification will provide users with the assurance that they can now measure flow quickly, easily and accurately; confident in the knowledge that they are using an accurate, independently tested device.”

The NivuFlow Stick is a simple to use, portable instrument for fast, accurate flow velocity measurements utilising the ultrasonic cross-correlation measurement principle. In contrast with traditional methods, this technology is able to measure water velocities at different water depths simultaneously and with high resolution. As a result, even relatively unskilled operators are able to derive an accurate flow velocity curve quickly and easily.

Simple, intuitive operating procedures are driven via smartphone or tablet, and data are both displayed in real-time and shared on-site via WLAN. Importantly, any deviations in measurement quality by the NivuFlow Stick are also displayed, and this quality indication is stored with the data.

The system contains no wearing parts and is maintenance-free, and with lightweight components, handling in the water is effortless and safe. New man at helm of metrology leader.

Quality Vision International (QVI®), the precision metrology manufacturer, has announced that Keith E. Polidor has been named as President and Chief Executive Officer effective June 9th, 2023.

Keith has had 23 years of experience with QVI, most recently as Chief Operating Officer (COO) since 2016 and as QVI’s Corporate Secretary since 2007. Prior to his role as COO, he led strategic and operational functions in Manufacturing, Quality, Information Systems, and Marketing. His educational credentials include an MBA degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BA degree from Colgate University. He will be the 3rd generation President of the company.

Keith is stepping into the roles being vacated by Edward “Tarry” Polidor. Tarry’s career with QVI has spanned six decades. He was the 2nd generation company President for 46 years, assuming the role from his father and company founder in 1977. During Tarry’s tenure, the concept of video metrology was invented and introduced to the world, enabling manufacturers to measure their parts optically in new and revolutionary ways, which drove company growth. Under Tarry’s leadership, QVI is well positioned for the leadership transition being announced today. He will remain with the company, transitioning into the role of President Emeritus.

Tarry commented on the change, saying, “Over the company’s 78-year history, technology introduced and offered by QVI has transformed the industry. Under Keith’s leadership, the tradition of innovation in dimensional metrology will continue.”

Metrology representation announced.

The Sempre Group recently became an approved supplier for LK Metrology and Renishaw in Ireland to help Irish manufacturers benefit from faster scanning times when using coordinate measuring machines (CMM). As Sempre continues to develop its partnership with the two companies, it now offers demonstrations of Renishaw’s REVO® multi-sensor 5-axis measurement system at its Dublin site.

Currently, most CMM services in Ireland are being delivered from outside the country, and many manufacturers are unaware of how scanning probes and similar technology could optimise scanning times and improve machine throughput. This means that many risk not getting the most out of their CMMs in terms of speed, delivery and quality.

Following its collaboration with LK Metrology, The Sempre Group now supplies the company’s large-scale CMM portfolio while offering dedicated, local support from its Dublin office. With Sempre having proven success in the benchtop CMM market, the partnership means it now supplies LK Metrology’s full range of large-scale CMMs. Therefore, Sempre can provide customers with larger machines capable of measuring components for industries like aerospace.

The Renishaw REVO head uses synchronised motion and 5-axis measurement technology to minimise the dynamic effects of CMM motion at ultra-high measurement speeds. The probe offers flexibility, allowing operators to integrate and change a stylus with ease. Sempre is now demoing the REVO system at its Dublin site, so manufacturers can discover how it can improve their measurement process.

“Many manufacturers could be getting so much more out of their CMMs by cutting lead times, reducing costs and improving quality. However, because there is a limited CMM supply base in Ireland, many customers are unaware of alternative solutions,” explained Jason McGlynn, commercial manager at The Sempre Group. “Now that we’re an approved supplier for both LK Metrology and Renishaw, we can start having these conversations with manufacturers and show them what else is out there, so they can gain a competitive advantage.

“We’re particularly excited about the REVO system because it really is the cutting edge of scanning probe technology and, no matter how old or unique the CMM, manufacturers can retrofit it with ease. We’ve already started offering demonstrations here in Balbriggan, and our team can also support with integration.”

Since Sempre opened its Ireland office in 2021*, it has been a hub for where the company can offer local support and contract measurement services for customers. Therefore, manufacturers can experience technology like REVO first-hand while benefitting from the team’s extensive experience.

Showcasing the value of measurement.

The Sempre Group, is attending the National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference and Exhibition taking place in Dublin, on November 23 and 24, 2021(Stand K06). They will exhibit a range of metrology equipment and consult the Irish market on how integrating metrology into production can improve productivity and ensure compliance.

This year’s exhibition will mark the first physical event that The Sempre Group will attend in Ireland since opening its first Irish office earlier in the year. At the 180 square metre office, Ireland-based commercial manager, Jason McGlynn and service and application engineer, Paul Cullen, provide local support to customers. The showroom houses a range of metrology equipment from a broad supplier base and also acts as a training centre for Irish manufacturers who require more detailed system knowledge.

At the exhibition, visitors will be able to see how Optical CMMs, such as the Micro-Vu and shaft measurement systems like the Opticline help improve repeatability and accuracy for industries that require high volume, compliant and quality parts, such as medical and aerospace. The Arkite Human Interface Mate, an optical projection system that guides operators with augmented reality (AR) instructions. The Gelsight 3D topography measurement system, a handheld tool that accurately measures surface roughness and defects, will also be on the stand.

To help manufacturers develop a centralised data system, simplify reporting and compliance and improve productivity The Sempre Group also offers a range of quality management software solutions. High QA Inspection Manager automatically extracts geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) data from a model, identifies critical dimensions and auto-populates reports. Manufacturers can also use Prolink software to assess the collated data and automated reports, which helps them to make more informed decisions.

Pure and stable signals from generator.

The Rubidium™ signal generator family from Anritsu delivers outstanding signal purity and frequency stability, even at high output power levels, across a broad frequency range of 9 kHz to 43.5 GHz. Coupled with built-in, easy-to-use, at-location frequency and power calibration capability, Rubidium offers exceptional overall utility and long-term value in a broad range of aerospace measurement applications.

Signal purity is critical to a wide range of measurement applications ranging from radar testing to testing of ADCs and DACs. The Rubidium signal generator offers groundbreaking low single sideband (SSB) phase noise of -136 dBc/Hz (typical) and -140 dBc/Hz (measured) at 10 GHz and 10 kHz offset that is unmatched in the industry. Coupled with best-in-class harmonic and spurious performance, the Rubidium signal generator enables customers to make measurements with better accuracy.

The Rubidium offers an order of magnitude with better frequency stability compared to other signal generators that use an OCXO based reference. This exceptional frequency stability is achieved either by an optional internal Rubidium reference or by locking the signal generator’s time base to a 1 PPS reference from an optional internal GNSS/GPS atomic clock receiver.

Utility, Ease of Use, and Long-Term Value
The Rubidium signal generator features built-in, on-site frequency, and level calibration that is easily accessible with the touch of a button on the GUI interface. This feature ensures customer level, accurate frequency desired, timesaving, enhancing convenience, and increasing instrument availability. An Anritsu CW USB power sensor is required for onsite level calibration. An internal GNSS/GPS atomic clock receiver or ultra-stability rubidium time base option is required for onsite frequency calibration.

The Rubidium’s AM, FM/PM, and pulse modulation capabilities enables a wide range of complex analog modulated signals. An internal low frequency generator can generate seven different waveform types to modulate the carrier. Additionally, simultaneous modulation of AM/FM, AM/PM, or FM/Pulse is possible to generate complex modulation waveforms such as chirps. Broad signal simulation capabilities are built into the signal generator for pulsed radar testing.

The Rubidium is housed in a 3U chassis with a 7-inch touch screen on the front panel with a traditional keypad/dial interface. A wide range of options are offered to achieve optimum cost-to-function and measurement flexibility.

Applications
The Rubidium signal generator can be used in a variety of applications. It is ideal for applications which require low phase noise such as testing radar subsystems, up/down converters, or high-speed ADCs/DACs. The signal generator is well suited for conducting nonlinear measurements without additional filters because of the exceptionally low harmonic, subharmonic, and non-harmonic performance at standard and high output power levels. They can be used for a variety of interference measurements, as a signal source to test devices and systems, and as a frequency reference in calibration and metrology labs.

Metrology for Ireland.

To provide better local support and metrology solutions to Irish manufacturers, single source metrology specialist, The Sempre Group has opened an office in Balbriggan (Dublin IRL). The office is to provide Sempre’s Irish customers, in sectors such as medical and aerospace manufacturing, better access to its product ranges and services.

“The new office in Dublin is in in touching distance from all of our existing Irish customers and just 15 minutes from the local airport,” commented Jason McGlynn, commercial manager at The Sempre Group. “The accessibility of our site will hopefully encourage more customers to pop in and let us truly understand their metrology needs in person.

The Sempre Group first expanded into Ireland in March 2020 by introducing metrology specialist Jason McGlynn to the team as commercial manager. Since then, the Irish team has expanded to include service and application engineer, Paul Cullen, and is now opening a permanent office to further support Sempre’s Irish customers.

The new 180 square metre office will allow the Irish team to carry out contract measurement services locally, cutting down the number of days that can be lost by shipping. The office will house metrology equipment, such as the Micro-Vu range, Gelsight technology and the Opticline range, in its showroom so customers can have demonstrations and see the systems before purchasing. The showroom will also act as a training centre for Irish manufacturers who require more detailed system knowledge and understanding.

“Sempre’s Irish division is a one stop shop for metrology solutions, so our manufacturing customers should find everything they need to improve data collection and ensure they are compliant with regulations,” continued McGlynn. “I hope to see our Irish team continue to expand as Sempre invests in its Irish customer base.”

Metrology appointment.

To help manufacturers across Ireland simplify their metrology processes The Sempre Group* now has a physical presence in Ireland. As part of the expansion, metrology specialist Jason McGlynn joins the team as commercial manager.
