Metrology representation announced.

The Sempre Group recently became an approved supplier for LK Metrology and Renishaw in Ireland to help Irish manufacturers benefit from faster scanning times when using coordinate measuring machines (CMM). As Sempre continues to develop its partnership with the two companies, it now offers demonstrations of Renishaw’s REVO® multi-sensor 5-axis measurement system at its Dublin site.

Currently, most CMM services in Ireland are being delivered from outside the country, and many manufacturers are unaware of how scanning probes and similar technology could optimise scanning times and improve machine throughput. This means that many risk not getting the most out of their CMMs in terms of speed, delivery and quality.

Following its collaboration with LK Metrology, The Sempre Group now supplies the company’s large-scale CMM portfolio while offering dedicated, local support from its Dublin office. With Sempre having proven success in the benchtop CMM market, the partnership means it now supplies LK Metrology’s full range of large-scale CMMs. Therefore, Sempre can provide customers with larger machines capable of measuring components for industries like aerospace.

The Renishaw REVO head uses synchronised motion and 5-axis measurement technology to minimise the dynamic effects of CMM motion at ultra-high measurement speeds. The probe offers flexibility, allowing operators to integrate and change a stylus with ease. Sempre is now demoing the REVO system at its Dublin site, so manufacturers can discover how it can improve their measurement process.

“Many manufacturers could be getting so much more out of their CMMs by cutting lead times, reducing costs and improving quality. However, because there is a limited CMM supply base in Ireland, many customers are unaware of alternative solutions,” explained Jason McGlynn, commercial manager at The Sempre Group. “Now that we’re an approved supplier for both LK Metrology and Renishaw, we can start having these conversations with manufacturers and show them what else is out there, so they can gain a competitive advantage.

“We’re particularly excited about the REVO system because it really is the cutting edge of scanning probe technology and, no matter how old or unique the CMM, manufacturers can retrofit it with ease. We’ve already started offering demonstrations here in Balbriggan, and our team can also support with integration.”

Since Sempre opened its Ireland office in 2021*, it has been a hub for where the company can offer local support and contract measurement services for customers. Therefore, manufacturers can experience technology like REVO first-hand while benefitting from the team’s extensive experience.

Digitalising Irish manufacturing.

The Sempre Group, the industrial metrology specialist, is hosting a virtual roundtable on digitalising Irish manufacturing to launch its Irish facility.

The panellists

On February 14, 2022, at 11:00am, The Sempre Group will host a panel with Andrew Lynch, chief information officer of Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR), Catherine Collins, head of First Polymer Skillnet and Pauline O’Flanagan, head of engineering industries Ireland for IBEC. In the webinar these experts from manufacturing and academia will discuss how we can overcome common barriers to Industry 4.0. Register for the roundtable for free below.

At the event, thought leaders from academia and industry will join a roundtable panel that explores the role of metrology in digitalisation to enable Irish manufacturers to further their digitalisation journeys.

“While Industry 4.0 is a topic that manufacturers have been aware of for a long time, few manufacturers have fully digitalised the manufacturing process,” explained Jason McGlynn, commercial manager at The Sempre Group. “This is particularly true when looking at quality, which is often treated as a separate entity in manufacturing and therefore neglected in plans to digitalise. During the roundtable we aim to change the narrative and demonstrate how metrology enables manufacturers to make improvements at every step of production.”

The discussion, facilitated by Jason McGlynn, will explore topics such as the steps to digitalising the manufacturing process, digitalising quality management and how these changes will impact the workforce.

• Andrew Lynch chairs the European Industry 4.E Lighthouse Initiative (LIASE) in ECSEL, EU Joint Undertaking in Digital Transformation, as well as the ManuFuture ETP Working Group (State Aid Strategies - Research & Innovation). He is also on the board of directors of the Irish Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre of Excellence (AMTCE), the FutureCAST Innovation Centre (Ireland NW) and sits on the national advisory board for the Digital Manufacturing Futures Centre (AIM).

• Catherine Collins has held various technical roles in process and polymer engineering before joining IBEC to work with First Polymer Training Skillnet In 2001. She is a member of the Institute of Materials Committee (IOM3 Polymer South), the Midland Regional Skills Forum, QQI’s Consultative Forum and represents Polymer Technology Ireland (Ibec) on various industry working groups.

Pauline O’Flanagan has held leadership positions in Medtech research and manufacturing over 15 years. In her role at Ibec, she represents the interests of engineering business sectors in Ireland. Pauline is also a member of groups such as Orgalim, representing European Technology Industries, the Lean Business Ireland Leadership Team and Solas, Skills to Advance Micro-Qualifications Oversight Team.

“By collaborating with innovators in industry and academia, we can better understand the needs of manufacturers in the area and supply the quality management equipment and services needed to give manufacturers that competitive edge in the global market,” concluded Jason McGlynn.

Showcasing the value of measurement.

The Sempre Group, is attending the National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference and Exhibition taking place in Dublin, on November 23 and 24, 2021(Stand K06). They will exhibit a range of metrology equipment and consult the Irish market on how integrating metrology into production can improve productivity and ensure compliance.

This year’s exhibition will mark the first physical event that The Sempre Group will attend in Ireland since opening its first Irish office earlier in the year. At the 180 square metre office, Ireland-based commercial manager, Jason McGlynn and service and application engineer, Paul Cullen, provide local support to customers. The showroom houses a range of metrology equipment from a broad supplier base and also acts as a training centre for Irish manufacturers who require more detailed system knowledge.

At the exhibition, visitors will be able to see how Optical CMMs, such as the Micro-Vu and shaft measurement systems like the Opticline help improve repeatability and accuracy for industries that require high volume, compliant and quality parts, such as medical and aerospace. The Arkite Human Interface Mate, an optical projection system that guides operators with augmented reality (AR) instructions. The Gelsight 3D topography measurement system, a handheld tool that accurately measures surface roughness and defects, will also be on the stand.

To help manufacturers develop a centralised data system, simplify reporting and compliance and improve productivity The Sempre Group also offers a range of quality management software solutions. High QA Inspection Manager automatically extracts geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) data from a model, identifies critical dimensions and auto-populates reports. Manufacturers can also use Prolink software to assess the collated data and automated reports, which helps them to make more informed decisions.

“Attending more events in Ireland enables us to listen to our potential and existing customers in that area to better understand their metrology needs,” explained Jason McGlynn. “Irish manufacturers, particularly in medical and aerospace applications, which want to improve data collection, quality compliance and productivity can visit our stand to see how our equipment, experts and local facility can support their individual needs. For example, at the event we’ll have one of our bespoke rotary fixtures. Manufacturers can use these fixtures to streamline the metrology process, hold components steady and remove thousands of manual interventions, reducing costs and time required for measurement.”

Metrology in medical device manufacturing.

To help medical device manufacturers understand the value in intntegrating metrology into production, industrial metrology supplier The Sempre Group has released Metrology in Medical. The whitepaper explores how medical device manufacturers can use measurement equipment and data to improve quality throughout the product lifecycle. The whitepaper can be downloaded for free on The Sempre Group website here.

Download Paper

The Sempre Group provides British and Irish manufacturers with the bespoke solutions and expert support needed to improve quality at every stage of a medical device’s lifecycle. The company regularly introduces new and innovative metrology systems and software from a range of leading global suppliers to find the right solution to any measurement challenge. The Sempre Group is also on hand to install systems, train staff and calibrate equipment to ensure measurements are valid in the long term — The Sempre Group is one of a few companies that offers UKAS certified calibration for Micro-Vu Optical CMMs.
“There is no room for error when bringing a medical device to market,” explained Jason McGlynn, commercial manager for Ireland at The Sempre Group. “Even the smallest defect can have dangerous consequences for patients, so manufacturers must document every step of the product lifecycle to prove a device meets its intended purpose."

The medical device industry in both Ireland and Britain is highly competitive. Ireland, for example, is one of the largest exporters of medical products in Europe, with annual exports of over 12.6 billion euros. As a result, medical device manufacturers are constantly looking for new ways to streamline validation, improve productivity and gain a competitive edge in the market.

This whitepaper explains how considering the role of metrology earlier in the process and integrating metrology into every stage of a medical device's product lifecycle enable manufacturers to develop a more efficient and traceable process. It explores the factors to consider when searching for a metrology supplier, how metrology software can improve traceability and the benefits of automating reporting processes.

“Metrology is vital to gathering this accurate and traceable evidence, but is often only used at the end of production to validate final parts,” added McGlynn. “By creating an effective quality management strategy and integrating metrology into production from the outset, manufacturers can improve traceability to ensure regulatory compliance while streamlining production.”

Metrology appointment.

To help manufacturers across Ireland simplify their metrology processes The Sempre Group* now has a physical presence in Ireland. As part of the expansion, metrology specialist Jason McGlynn joins the team as commercial manager. The Sempre Group will now establish a new Technology Centre to provide local support to customers across Ireland, in sectors including medical and aerospace manufacturing.

Jason McGlynn
The Sempre Group, which recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary, will now establish itself as a go-to support service across the entire metrology portfolio — both products and services. In this new role, Jason will build on his extensive experience in high-volume medical device manufacturing, having worked across the entire product lifecycle, from concept, development, and operations. He also brings particular expertise in coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), gauging and CT scanning to the company.

“Ireland is one of the largest exporters of medical devices in Europe and it has a world-class aerospace sector,” explained Mike John, managing director of The Sempre Group. “We have been dedicated to delivering quality metrology solutions and services to customers throughout Ireland for many years, and, to further this thriving market, we are now investing significantly in our Irish operations.”

“As the complexity of products increases, manufacturers need a high-quality measurement service provider that understands the entire product lifecycle,” explained Jason McGlynn. “Bringing a product to market is a significant investment and, at the moment, it is difficult for Irish manufacturers to access the local metrology support they need from one single provider.

“The Sempre Group will provide Irish manufacturing companies with this much needed support,” continued Jason McGlynn. “The company offers a diverse range of products and services to help customers solve any metrology challenge at any stage in the product lifecycle. For example, supplying measurement technology that helps bring products to market, as well as offering breakdown and calibration support to help keep operations running.”
