Solutions for plant emissions control and monitoring.

In order to operate a combustion process at peak efficiency, it requires excess air to ensure complete combustion of the fuel. This presents a challenge, as too much or too little air will reduce the combustion efficiency and result in higher emissions, and a greater environmental impact.

Continuous monitoring of the amount of oxygen and combustibles in the flue gas is required to allow for prompt adjustments at the boiler control system to maintain peak efficiency. Servomex’s combustion gas analyzers and emissions gas monitoring equipment meet this challenge directly, saving up to 4% of fuel costs, lowering emissions, maintaining the highest standards of safety and a reduction in the environmental impact.

The SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700 flue gas analyzer monitors both oxygen and combustibles(COe) in flue gases. Oxygen is measured using zirconium oxide sensor technology. A thick film catalytic sensor optimized for carbon monoxide is used to detect parts per million (ppm) levels of combustibles and monitor COe breakthrough.

In addition, to enable preventative maintenance, an optional flow sensor is available that monitors the flow up the analyzer’s probe and through the sensors. These sensors are housed in a heated sensor head mounted on the process wall to which a sample flue gas is aspirated via a sample probe.

Keith Warren, Head of IP&E Applications and Development, said: “Precise monitoring of plant equipment linked to a real-time process control strategy is crucial. Furnace combustion efficiency optimization tied to downstream gaseous emission levels leads not only to potential lower fuel costs but reduced CO, NOx, CO2, SO2 and particulate emissions, particularly during load changes and start-up and shutdown when the system temperatures are not ideal.

“We are the expert global partner, offering a total gas analysis solution, which includes the FluegasExact 2700 for optimizing combustion.”

Helping to meet regulatory emission requirements now and in the future.

Servomex has launched the Laser 3 Plus Environmental helping plant operators meet with legislative requirements.

With integrated auto-validation software to ensure highly consistent measurement accuracy, the Laser 3 Plus Environmental Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) analyzer is a compact, reliable solution for accurate continuous emissions measurements of ammonia (NH3).

Rhys Jenkins, Spectroscopic Product Manager, of Servomex, said: “This will allow our customers to meet or even exceed the performance requirements of EPA PS18 for cross stack continuous emissions monitoring, avoiding needless downtime or inaccurate NH3 concentration that can lead to costly fines.”

Although NHis not currently regulated as a hazardous air pollutant under the United States’ Clean Air Act, some US states regard it as a precursor pollutant for the creation of particulate matter of 2.5 microns (PM2.5) and find that 5 ppm NH3 in emissions can cause eye and respiratory irritations.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strongly recommends that analyzers used for continuous ammonia (NH3) monitoring in combustion emissions standards set out in Performance Specification 18 (PS18) are met. Many US state regulatory agencies are targeting the precursors that create PM2.5 as a pathway to lower PM2.5 emissions, so EPA PS18 looks set to become the basis of future regulation.

Additionally, Procedure 6 (40 Code of US Federal Regulations Part 60, Appendix F) states that all continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) equipment must also be able to perform daily quality tests. This means that any downtime can affect the validation of an analyzer and may incur significant financial penalties.

With the Laser 3 Plus Environmental’s auto-validation software enabling compliance with Procedure 6, the analyzer’s non-contact, low-maintenance TDL sensing techniques minimises downtime, keeps operational costs low and ensures customers are ready to meet the legislative requirements of the CEMS market.

Mary Beth Syddons, President of Industrial Solutions Division, Spectris added: “In his current role and previously as the interim ISD President, Andy has gained excellent knowledge of the Servomex business, its culture and opportunities. We could not think of anyone better suited to take over this role. The business is in a much better place due to Trevor’s many contributions and we are sure that, with a clear strategy and committed organization, Andy will fully deliver Servomex’s strategy in the coming years."
