Evaluation for GaN MMICs devices.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), one of Korea’s leading research institutes, has selected Anritsu’s Broadband Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) VectorStar™ ME7838G for the characterisation and design verification of high-frequency devices using GaN MMICs. By deploying the ME7838G, ETRI has established an evaluation platform for millimeter-wave and sub-THz applications, improving measurement reproducibility and enabling reliable design verification.

As next-generation communications technologies advance, device evaluation is expanding into millimeter-wave and sub-THz frequency ranges. To improve design accuracy and performance prediction for GaN MMIC-based device development, ETRI conducts broadband characterisation that covers not only the operating frequency band but also harmonic frequency ranges. On-wafer measurements, which evaluate device characteristics directly on the wafer while excluding the effects of packaging and mounting, are widely used for this purpose. However, in millimeter-wave and sub-THz on-wafer measurements, probe contact conditions and measurement-system effects can easily cause measurement variation, making it a challenge to establish an evaluation platform that enables highly reliable comparison and verification between design and measured data.

To address these challenges, ETRI deployed the ME7838G. The ME7838G supports single-sweep measurements up to 220 GHz and enables evaluation from millimeter-wave to sub-THz frequencies on a single platform. Since broadband evaluation can be performed using a single measurement system, ETRI established an on-wafer evaluation platform that enables measurements from millimeter-wave to sub-THz frequencies under consistent test conditions, without switching measurement systems between frequency bands. This provided an environment in which measurement data acquired across a wide bandwidth could be compared with and analysed against design data under consistent conditions and with a high degree of accuracy.

Anritsu recognises that measurement technologies that combine broadband characterisation with high measurement reproducibility will become increasingly important for high-frequency device development for 6G and next-generation satellite communications. Anritsu will continue to support customers’ semiconductor research, development, and evaluation through its test and measurement technologies.

Further details of this case study “Establishing a High-Frequency Evaluation Platform to Support Foundry-Grade Quality.” It describes how the high-frequency evaluation platform established by ETRI contributes to improving design verification and performance prediction accuracy for GaN MMICs.

Control system for combined cycle power plant!

Yokogawa  (Korea) has won an order from Samsung C&T Corporation to supply control systems for the Rabigh 2 combined cycle power plant, which is being built in Rabigh on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. Plants of this type rely on both gas and steam turbines to generate electricity. The exhaust heat from a gas turbine is used to generate steam, which is sent to a steam turbine to generate additional electricity.

This power plant will have three 700 MW combined cycle power units with gas turbines, giving it a total capacity of 2,100 MW. The plant is being built for Al Mourjan For Electricity Production Company, whose shareholders are the Saudi Electricity Company (50%) and a consortium (50%) consisting of Samsung C&T Corporation and ACWA Power International, an independent power producer. The plant is scheduled to start operation in June 2017.

For this project, Yokogawa will deliver a CENTUM® VP integrated production control system for the monitoring and operation of all plant facilities, including the gas turbines, exhaust-heat-recovery boilers, and steam turbines, and for the control of the exhaust-heat-recovery boilers. The company will be responsible for engineering, and will also provide support for installation, commissioning, and operator training. This system is scheduled to be delivered by the middle of next year.

The winning of this control system order can be attributed to Yokogawa's solid track record in providing control systems to the power industry, including over 100 systems for combined cycle power plants, and to the strong engineering capabilities of Yokogawa Electric Korea. An additional contributing factor was the company's excellent customer support network in Saudi Arabia.

Combined cycle power plants generate power more efficiently and emit fewer greenhouse gases than conventional thermal power plants that use only gas or steam turbines. Power utilities all over the world are planning to construct plants of this type at sites that have ready access to natural gas. Encouraged by its success in winning this order, Yokogawa plans to expand its control business in the power sector, including the combined cycle power plant segment.

Passively-cooled cabinets protect instrumentation on world’s largest vessel!

High performance environmental protection cabinets for Shell’s ‘Prelude’ floating liquefied natural gas project are being supplied by Intertec. Designed specifically for extended service life in hazardous areas, the shelters incorporate innovative semi-passive cooling technology and are some of the most stringently specified instrumentation protection solutions that Intertec has ever produced.

Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project is setting new engineering records. Designed to liquefy natural gas extracted from subsea wells by chilling it to -162 degrees Celsius, and to then store the liquid until it is offloaded to large LNG carriers, the vessel will be the largest in the world, with a length of 488 metres and a width of 74 metres. The hull of the vessel was constructed in South Korea and launched in December 2013. Due to enter service in 2017, the vessel will be towed to the Prelude and Concerto gas fields in the Browse Basin near Timor, about 200 km off the northwest coast of Australia, where it will be permanently anchored for about 25 years. After this time it will be inspected, overhauled and possibly moved to a new location, where it will be expected to provide a further 25 years of service.

Much of the on-line process analysis instrumentation on the Prelude FLNG vessel will be housed in purpose-built environmental protection cabinets supplied by Intertec. In total, the company is supplying 90 cabinets for sample conditioning systems and 30 cabinets for process analyzers, each designed to match the instrumentation content and layout precisely in order to optimise thermal performance.

As Intertec’s Commercial Director, Hans Geiger, points out, “Only three of the 120 cabinets that Intertec is supplying for this project are the same size. Our specialised design and automated manufacturing capabilities enable us to produce custom environmental protection products very easily, to optimise performance and match the space available on demanding applications like this.”

The cabinets are required to be capable of withstanding severe Category 5 tropical cyclones with wind speeds in excess of 252 km/h (157 mph) and to have a minimum service life of 25 years - with 50 years as a design aim. Additional requirements include a high degree of resistance to corrosion being caused by the saline environment and the presence of sour or acid gas, and the ability to cool electronics equipment without using explosion-proof air conditioning systems, which incur high capital and operating costs.

These environmental protection cabinets are constructed from a proprietary composite material comprising sandwich walls of long-fibre glass reinforced polyester (GRP) sheets, enclosing a core of polyurethane foam. The material has a similar strength to that of stainless steel but is about four times lighter, making it ideal for use on offshore platforms and floating structures, where every effort is made to minimise weight.

Other advantages include a very low thermal conductivity which facilitates the construction of efficient, condensation-free cooling cabinets, and an inherently high resistance to corrosion caused by salt or aggressive chemicals such as sulphur or chlorine. For this project, the external surfaces of the cabinets are further protected by a thick layer of UV-resistant gel coat. In order to meet the application’s high wind speed requirements, each cabinet is equipped with special built-in mountings – which are external to the thermally insulated parts of the enclosure – to secure the top and base to Prelude’s deck structure. All external metal components are fabricated from 316 stainless steel with a corrosion-resistant protective coating that is specified for ship use.

Each of the 120 Intertec cabinets incorporates a unique form of semi-passive cooling technology. The internal face of the cabinets' rear walls are fitted with a high efficiency heat exchanger, comprising one or more aluminium cooling plates and stainless steel coolant pipes connected to Prelude’s cold water supply system, which obtains ‘cold’ water from the deep sea by a 150 m long pipe below the vessel. Heat dissipated by the equipment in the cabinets is absorbed by the water and transferred to the vessel’s main water cooling system, where it is dissipated to the environment. The size of each cabinet depends on the power dissipation of the contained sample conditioning or process analyzer system, which ranges from 140 W to 900 W.

This form of distributed cooling has enormous technical and economic advantages, especially in hazardous areas or where space and weight is at a premium. It provides a very efficient means of removing heat from the cabinets without requiring local air conditioning systems, which would necessarily need to be explosion proof – and therefore expensive. Furthermore, transferring heat from individual air conditioners of below-deck cabinet installations to the ambient environment would be a major challenge and involve significant amounts of space-consuming air ducting. The semi-passive cooling system is inherently safe for use in a hazardous environment; at the cabinet level it requires little or no electrical power of its own and is virtually maintenance-free, making it ideal for long life-cycle applications.

The intended operating environment for Shell’s Prelude FLNG vessel poses significant instrumentation protection challenges. The Browse Basin is very close to the Equator, which means that it has a tropical climate with an average temperature of about 32 degrees Celsius. This moist and hot environment, combined with a salt-laden atmosphere, is highly conducive to rust formation, making non-metallic protection cabinets a sensible design choice. In some of Prelude’s more confined spaces, the ambient temperature could reach more than 50 degrees Celsius. Even under these extreme conditions, all of the passively-cooled cabinets that Intertec is producing for the project are designed to keep their internal air temperature below 35 degrees Celsius

Control system project in Korea

Yokogawa has won an order from Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., (KOSEP), a subsidiary of Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), to supply control systems for the No. 1 unit of the Yeosu Thermal Power Plant in the city of Yeosu, which is located in Korea’s South Jeolla Province.

The Yeosu Thermal Power Plant has been comprised of a 200-MW heavy oil-fired unit and a 329-MW coal-fired fluidized bed (CFB)* unit with a current total capacity of 528 MW. The No. 1 heavy-oil fired unit is going to be replaced with another coal-fired CFB boiler and a steam turbine that will generate 350 MW. The renewed No. 1 unit is scheduled to start operation in November 2015. This order is for a comprehensive range of control and instrumentation, including CENTUM® VP integrated production control systems for the power plant's boilers, turbine, and auxiliary facilities as well as engineering and installation. While turbine manufacturers generally also supply the control systems for their products, Yokogawa will be providing the turbine control system for this project.

Yokogawa Electric Korea has recently received many orders for international projects undertaken by Korean engineering, procurement, and construction contractors (EPC), and is a top supplier of control systems in its home market. It was able to win this order because of the high reliability of Yokogawa’s control systems, its excellent engineering capabilities, and its comprehensive maintenance services. Encouraged by the success in winning this order, Yokogawa will expand its power business in Korea by offering appropriate solutions to developers of innovative technologies that generate power more efficiently and are environmentally friendly.
