Laboratory automation in Indonesia.

Reduce emissions & increasing capacity in polyester plant.

Improving safety at a newly expanded purified terephthalic acid (PTA) facility at Merak (RI).

INEOS Aromatics Indonesia has completed $70 million of upgrades at its facilities in Indonesia, to significantly reduce emissions and increase capacity, which includes the installation of two vent gas analyzer systems from Servomex. These were designed in conjunction with INEOS to deliver enhanced safety and control of the oxidation reactor.

Each gas analyzer system includes a pressure reduction pre-sample conditioner enclosure and a SERVOTOUGH OxyExact 2200 – a high specification O2 analyzer which offers an unrivaled combination of precision, flexibility and performance for optimum process and safety control.

Installing the larger oxidation reactor, reconfiguring the reactor’s heat recovery system and revamping the process air compressor train is expected to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions per ton by 15 per cent. The move should also increase site capacity by 15 per cent from 500,000 tonnes to 575,000 tonnes per annum.

The project was successfully secured and delivered by Project Manager Ernesto Torres and Design Engineering Lead Cole Harbour.

INEOS Aromatics Indonesia president director, Frank Yang added: “This new, multi-million dollar investment shows our commitment to its future growth. Installing the larger oxidation reactor supports INEOS’s commitment to producing essential products while reducing emissions to net-zero by 2050.”

The Merak plant has played an important part in the growth of the Indonesian polyester industry. It became part of INEOS as part of its $5 billion acquisition of the BP Petrochemicals business in January 2021.

MES in Pharma plant.

PAS-X MES implementation at manufacturing site in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia

As part of their digitization initiative, Dexa Medica started their first full-scope electronic batch recording project with Werum's PAS-X Manufacturing Execution System (MES) at their manufacturing site in Palembang (RI).  Dexa Medica is one of Indonesia's largest ethical pharmaceutical companies and a prominent player in the domestic pharmaceutical market.

PAS-X will be integrated with ERP, LIMS, DMS, LDAP and IPC equipment as well as with level 2 automation systems in a phase-wise approach. Dexa Medica uses many latest technologies which received GMP, ISO 9001 and other quality-related certifications. Now, with the start of the MES/EBR project, the Palembang site will be fully digitized. This will enable Dexa Medica to control their manufacturing processes in a flexible and electronic way – based on accurate real-time data – and to achieve major improvements in production quality and efficiency.

Weighing & Dispensing at Jakarta plant.

PT Dankos Farma has successfully taken Werum’s PAS-X Weighing & Dispensing and finished goods check-weighing system into operation at the pharma company’s Jakarta plant in Indonesia. PT Dankos Farma is a holding of PT Kalbe Farma, the largest pharmaceutical company in Southeast Asia and one of the leading companies in the fields of consumer health and nutrition.

PAS-X Weighing & Dispensing and finished goods check-weighing system was introduced while updating the IT systems and was fully integrated with the Oracle EBS ERP.

“As PAS-X is a standard product system which has also already been introduced at PT Kalbe Farma, our parent company, we were able to complete the project within the short term of only six months and, in addition, we could save validation costs,” says Mr. Timotius Hokianto, PT Dankos Farma, Indonesia. “The system provides built-in best practices workflows, barcode scanning and integration to weighing devices together with easy to follow steps for operator instructions in Indonesian Bahasa language.”

In a next step, the PAS-X installation will be extended to a full-scope MES and it will be rolled out at other plants.

Control in geothermal station!

Yokogawa is to supply the control system for unit 5 of the Kamojang geothermal power station in Indonesia. The order for this project was received through Tokyo Denki Sangyo Co., Ltd., a Yokogawa sales agent, and was placed by Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., which is responsible for manufacturing and delivering the unit's steam turbine and generator.

This geothermal plant is owned and operated by PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), the geothermal arm of the state-run oil and gas company, Pertamina, and is located in Garut, a city situated approximately 40 km from Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. Unit 5 will have a 35 MW power generation capacity, and its construction is scheduled to be completed by July 2015, whereupon it will be commissioned and enter service.

For the monitoring and control of unit 5's steam turbine and auxiliary facilities, Yokogawa's subsidiaries Yokogawa Engineering Asia and Yokogawa Indonesia will supply the CENTUM(R) VP integrated production control system, InsightSuite(R) AE plant asset effectiveness optimisation services, PRM(R) plant resource manager, Exaquantum(tm) plant information management system (PIMS), and a plant operation training simulator. In addition to being responsible for the delivery of these systems, these companies will provide support during the engineering and commissioning phases.

Unit 4 at this plant also uses a Yokogawa integrated production control system, CENTUM(R) CS 3000. Completion of the current project will bring to 11 the number of control systems that Yokogawa has provided for geothermal power plants in Indonesia.

Geothermal energy can generate a stable supply of electricity day and night, and in all weather conditions. Since no carbon dioxide is emitted, it is regarded as an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. Indonesia has the world's largest geothermal energy resources and is planning many additional projects to exploit these resources.

To grow its industrial automation and control business and contribute to the realisation of a sustainable society, Yokogawa is targeting renewable energy fields such as geothermal power. As such, the company will be seeking to expand the provision of its solutions in Indonesia and other geothermal resource-rich countries.

Control system for municipal water treatment plant in Indonesia

Yokogawa  has received an order from PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk, a major Indonesian construction company specialising in the power plant and water supply and wastewater treatment sectors, to supply the automation system for the Petanu water treatment plant that it is building at the Sanur beach resort area on Bali's southeastern coast for a municipal water utility that is overseen by the Indonesian government's Ministry of Public Works.

The Petanu water treatment plant will produce 300 litres per second (approximately 25,920 cubic metres per day) of clean water for Gianyar Regency, Denpasar City, and Badung Regency. It is scheduled to start operation in September 2013.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, and its infrastructure is being rapidly developed to meet the growing needs of its urban population and the tourism industry. The Petanu water treatment plant is a key to ensuring a stable supply of clean water for southeastern Bali.

The automation system that is to be installed at the Petanu water treatment plant includes the FAST/TOOLS SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) software package, the STARDOM(TM) network-based control system, analysers, and a variety of field devices such as ADMAG series magnetic flowmeters. Yokogawa Indonesia will be responsible for the entire project, from engineering to delivery, installation, and commissioning.

Yokogawa was able to win this order because of its ability to provide a “one stop” solution comprised of field devices, control systems, and other products that will meet a wide range of operation and maintenance needs and thereby improve the efficiency of water production.

Water shortages are becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, because of rapid economic and population growth. According to a report entitled “Future vision and policy response toward water business industry" (pdf) that was released by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in April 2010, the global water market is projected to grow from 36 trillion yen in 2007 to 87 trillion yen in 2025.

Encouraged by the success in winning this order, Yokogawa will seek to expand its share of the water-related control business in Southeast Asia and other emerging regions by providing water supply infrastructure solutions based on its extensive experience in water treatment applications and technical expertise in automation systems.

Indonesian DCS & SIS orders

DCS and SIS orders placed by Indonesia's CAP Group

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has announced that its subsidiary, PT. Yokogawa Indonesia, has received an order from PT. Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk. (CAP) to replace the legacy distributed control system (DCS) and safety instrumented system (SIS) at the company's ethylene and polyethylene plant in Cilegon, which is in western Java's Banten Province.

This CAP facility is Indonesia's premier petrochemical plant, incorporating world-class, state-of-the-art technology and supporting facilities. The plant's naphtha cracker produces high-quality ethylene, propylene, crude C4 and pyrolysis gasoline (Py-gas) for the Indonesian as well as regional export markets. These are basic petrochemical products obtained from the distillation of crude oil. Crude C4 includes butane and butylene that have four carbon atoms per molecule.

Yokogawa Indonesia has also received an order from the CAP subsidiary PT Styrindo Mono Indonesia (SMI) to replace the legacy DCS at the company's styrene monomer plant, which is about 40 km from the CAP plant and has an annual output of 340,000 MT.

For these projects, Yokogawa Indonesia will provide the latest CENTUM(R) VP DCS and ProSafe-RS SIS along with engineering, installation, commissioning, and engineering and operator training. These projects are expected to take 10 months from start to finish.

Key factors in the CAP Group's selection of Yokogawa for these replacement projects were the high reliability and global track record of Yokogawa's CENTUM VP and ProSafe-RS platforms, the close project support made possible by global co-operation between Yokogawa Indonesia and Yokogawa Engineering Asia Pte. Ltd., which is responsible for the Yokogawa Group's operations in Asia, and the company's global maintenance and service network.

Ichsan Gafar, a director at Yokogawa Indonesia, says: "I think that the customer assessed and scored Yokogawa as the best long-term partner of the CAP Group, considering the strength of our products in terms of reliability and expandability, the operability of an integrated DCS and SIS solution under the Yokogawa brand, and our local engineering, project execution, and after-sales support capabilities.
