Passive harmonic filter.

Help reduce overheating, mechanical stress, and vibrations in motors and transformers caused by harmonic distortion.

The TPQH3411 passive harmonic filter from EMIS is designed and manufactured to provide a cost-effective solution for harmonic mitigation in Power Systems by maintaining THID in compliance with the current and voltage requirements of IEEE 519.

Three-Phase Passive Harmonic Filters are used to minimise harmonic distortion, especially in installations with high levels of non-linear loads such as variable frequency drives (VFDs), UPS units and rectifiers. They function by using passive components resistors, inductors and capacitors in a filter network to suppress unwanted harmonic currents and voltages.

They are typically tuned to specific harmonic orders (e.g.,3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th….), providing low-impedance paths at those frequencies to effectively divert harmonic content. The capacitive elements in these filters offer reactive power compensation, enhancing the system’s power factor.

Key specifications include:

  • Operating Voltage - 415 VAC
  • Operating Frequency - 50HZ
  • Power Rating - 1.1KW to 250KW
  • Mounting - Floor/wall

Passive harmonic filters are recognised for their simple and robust design, making them a popular and cost-effective solution for mitigating harmonics in power systems. In addition to assisting with compliance to harmonic distortion limits set by standards such as IEEE 519, the filters also help reduce overheating, mechanical stress, and vibrations in motors and transformers caused by harmonic distortion.

Applications for the EMIS TPQH3411 passive harmonic filter include:

  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), induction furnaces, robotics, conveyors.
  • High-power pumps, blowers, motor drives
  • UPS systems and switch-mode power supplies.
  • Crushers, rolling mills, large motors.
  • Compressors, offshore drilling systems, pumps
  • Elevators, lighting with electronic ballasts
  • Inverter-based wind/solar systems
  • Cement, Paper, and Steel Industries

Efficiency – It’s not just about operating energy consumption says Rittal #BIS

Rittal’s new TopTherm fan-and-filter unit makes installation and servicing simpler and quicker as mounting on the enclosure, electrical connection, reversal of the direction of airflow and replacement of the filter mat are all possible without the use of any tools.

The changeover to Rittal’s TopTherm fan-and-filter unit has been made as simple as possible by maintaining the air throughputs and cut-out dimensions of the previous product range. Original equipment manufacturers, panel builders and end users alike may upgrade to the new fan-and-filter without any change to the metalwork in which it is to be installed. The same may be said of Rittal’s TopTherm Blue e cooling unit, as the cooling outputs, mounting cut-outs and dimensions of the series that it replaces, have been maintained.

Improved performance against increased static pressure difference results in an extended filter service life that not only reduces running costs but also saves time due to longer maintenance intervals.

RiDiag II is a useful software tool for the TopTherm Blue e cooling unit, allowing the parameters of cooling units to be changed quickly and easily, as well as stored remotely.
The RiNano coated condenser in Rittal’s cooling units extends servicing intervals by minimising the adhesion of water, dirt and oil, ensuring a more consistent cooling output for a longer period of time.

Filter regulators improve response speed of valve solutions

Stainless steel filter regulators reduce closing time of valves

Ascendant Technologies, a specialist valve automation company serving the British oil and gas sector, has selected filter regulators from ASCO Numatics to help improve the response speed of its valve solutions. By deploying the ASCO Numatics 342 Series of filter regulators, which have a large flow rate, the company is able to meet the needs of its customers by offering a solution with a significantly reduced valve closure time.

Filter regulator flow rates are critical in determining the time required to close a valve. ASCO Numatics ½” stainless steel filter regulators incorporate moulded reinforced diaphragms, which enable a flow rate up to 4430 l/min. Following performance tests, Ascendant Technologies concluded that the ASCO regulator reduced the valve closure time from 11.7 to 7 seconds.

“To meet end user requirements, we needed to improve the response speed of our valve solution,” said Andy McDuff, General Manager, Ascendant Technologies. “We tested a number of filter regulators from different suppliers and the ASCO device outperformed its rivals, helping to significantly reduce the valve closing time.”

For Emergency Shut-Down (ESD) applications the response time of the valve can be critical. If the filter regulator is unable to pass enough air to enable the actuator to close the valve in the specified time, then a booster may need to be fitted. This adds to the overall cost and increases the number of potential leak points.

The Series 342 is suitable for ambient temperatures from -40°C up to +80°C (-50°C for arctic conditions is available on request) and for compressed air and gases. It can therefore be installed across many industries, including chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, refinery, power generation, pulp & paper and process plants.

Stainless steel filter regulators

ASCO Numatics has a a new range of Series 342 Stainless Steel Filter Regulators to complement the existing range of air service equipment. Suitable for inlet pressures up to 10 bar, the 1/4” and 1/2” NPT filter regulators have a fully stainless steel construction and comply with the requirements of ASTM A351/NACE MR 01.75.

The moulded reinforced diaphragms offer a large flow and the fine pitch/dual springs ensure accurate and steady regulation, regardless of input or output pressures. With a 316L stainless steel filtering element (25μm & 5μm), the regulators are suitable for compressed air and gases.

A finned diverter guarantees effective moisture removal. The regulator bowl has a manual bleed to drain condensate. An automatic drain is available as an option.

The smooth design facilitates easy mounting and there is a separate connection for the optional pressure gauge. In addition to an impressive flow rate ranging from 2380 to 4430 l/min, the filter regulator is suitable for ambient temperatures from -40°C up to +80°C (-50°C for arctic conditions is available on request).

The series 342 stainless steel filter regulator can be installed across many industries, including chemical, petrochemical, offshore and oil & gas, refinery, power generation, pulp & paper and process plants.
