Next generation secure terminal servers.

Legacy serial devices made network-ready for deployment on Industrial IP-based Ethernet LANs .

The next generation of RS-232/422/485 secure terminal servers, the NPort 6100-G2/6200-G2 Series has been developed by Moxa. The servers are in accordance with the cybersecurity best practices of IEC 62443-4-1. Because of their IEC 62443 certification, the new terminal servers provide reliable defense against cyberthreats when used to connect legacy serial devices to modern Ethernet TCP/IP networks. Deploying these terminal servers not only eliminate the expense of replacing serial field devices, such as sensors, actuators, HMIs, data loggers, and PLCs, but also helps enterprises avoid the time-consuming build-out of complex security solutions.

Legacy serial communications present significant security challenges to ICS as the protocols were devised before modern cyber threats existed. To address this issue, Moxa NPort 6100-G2/6200-G2 terminal servers support the TLS and SSH protocols that securely encrypt data before sending it over private or public networks. Support of SSL certificate signing by RSA-4096 / ECC-521 also heightens security against modern decryption attempts, while Secure Boot permits only firmware authorized by Moxa to run on the servers.

Consistent with the trend for smaller systems and easier setup, Moxa NPort 6100-G2/6200-G2 secure terminal servers support side-mount installation as an option, alongside desktop, DIN-rail or wall mounting choices. Two-sided LEDs are visually accessible in a variety of installation scenarios. In addition, software-configurable pull high/low resistors and a terminator function eliminate the need to open the chassis to adjust the pull high/low resistors or terminators, making it convenient to install serial devices at field sites. The NPort 6100-G2/6200-G2 Series also comes with a one-click log collection function to enable logging of data, which can provide the information that a technical support team needs to quickly troubleshoot system issues.

Moxa is offering NPort 6100-G2/6200-G2 secure terminal servers in four models with a choice of one or two serial ports, up to 2TB SD card support, and operating temperatures of either -10 to 60°C or -40 to 75° C.

Terminal blocks provide any number of connection poles without special tools or fittings.

The new BTBH-H easy-stack product line of surface mount terminal blocks from IDEC Corporation are in a compact form factor with multiple amp ratings. These terminal blocks can be easily stacked together or ordered preassembled to meet the needs of any commercial or industrial application.

BTBH-H blocks are available in four different amp ratings—10A, 15A, 30A, and 50A—and can be ordered as individual components, or as complete assemblies by amp rating for 2 to 30 poles. The terminal blocks are assembled in a twist- and snap-together fashion, without the need for special tools, connecting rods, or DIN rails, resulting in a very low installation height. Users can easily add or remove terminals at any time, as required by specification changes or maintenance work. Terminal blocks with different current values can be combined for applications with different wire diameters, and these blocks are mountable to the surface of any electrical or control backpanel with standard M4 self-tapping screws.

These blocks use touch-down electrical terminals that have spring-loaded captive screws, ensuring screws do not get lost and reducing wiring time by making the screw head easily accessible. For maximum compatibility with any application, a pressure plate configuration accepts ring tongue, fork tongue, ferrules, or bare wire, and electrical connections are IP20 finger safe. Depending on applicable standards and terminal block size, the terminal blocks have an insulation rating of 600V or more, and can accept wires from 18- to 6-AWG. Multipole jumpers are available to simplify wiring of common connections for power distribution.

Accessories include end plates, marking strips, dust covers, and joint plates, so any number of terminal poles can be created. These components are UL and CSA certified, EN compliant (TÜV certified), and meet the UL standard FW2 for factory wiring and field wiring. The products are highly flame resistant, and comply with JIS C 8201-7-1 and NECA C 2811.

The surface mount terminal blocks provide users the choice for exactly what they need for any type of commercial or industrial application, and the product’s modularity enables inventory reduction because only individual parts must be stocked, rather than entire assemblies. This flexibility also increases environmentally friendly practices.

Barrier terminal blocks.

The DKU series of screw type barrier terminal blocks, from Dinkle International, are typically used for power transmission in control panels and power distribution cabinets, and they have been upgraded for easier use with various types of cable lugs. They are particularly suitable for high vibration industrial applications, including transportation and railway.

Traditional designs for screw terminals required workers to entirely remove screws and washers when connecting ring-lugged wires, which is time-consuming and can lead to dropped and lost screws.

New DKU screw type terminal blocks use a spring-guided system where the screws are integrated and captive within the terminal enclosure. These screws can be backed out so that ring- or U-shaped cable lugs can be inserted, without the possibility of losing the screw. The housing also ensures proper alignment of the screw and lug. Connection screws are integrated with washers to deliver secure connectivity and vibration resistance, even in harsh environments. The screws and washers are made with zinc-plated steel to inhibit rust.

The DKU terminal housing is designed to enclose the screws and conductors, providing better protection for the user and equipment than traditional designs that lack a cover. DKU terminals are available in DIN rail and panel-mount configurations, and are offered with accessories to improve installation convenience, such as jumpers, marking labels, end caps, and end brackets.

DKU terminals are offered in five sizes ranging from 15A for M3 and 26-14AWG, up to 60A M5 20-6AWG, all rated for use up to 600V. They carry approvals from UL and cUL recognized, and and the materials are RoHS compliant.

25 year bus terminal advances.

The electronic terminal block is a foundational component and global standard in automation technology

Beckhoff's Bus Terminal combined fieldbus technology with the proven terminal block principle for the first time 25 years ago. It may be said to have revolutionised the automation technology of the time. The final result was developed together with Wago Kontakttechnik. The modular and open I/O system for space-saving, customizable and highly flexible configurations was then presented at the Hannover Messe trade fair in 1995.

Beckhoff continued the advancement of the existing block module concept for the electronic terminal block. In itself, this significantly reduced cabling requirements for I/O installations. However, the new Bus Terminal concept went one step further: The aim was to replace the traditional modular terminal block with an electronic version. When developing this innovation, Beckhoff drew on its many years of automation experience together with its specific expertise in fieldbus technology, communication technology, control cabinet construction and the development of industrial hardware and software. Thus, the process not only developed the complete hardware, software and K-Bus communication for the terminal system, but also a complete product family with Bus Couplers as well as Signal and System Terminals. The result was a fieldbus-independent, highly modular I/O system.

Following the introduction of the Bus Terminal in 1995, this technology quickly went on to become a worldwide and universally accepted automation standard. This applies, in particular, to Beckhoff’s system concept: 25 years of development and application experience are reflected in the broadest I/O portfolio on the market. Bus and EtherCAT Terminal technology is used today in an extremely wide range of applications, from machine automation to Ethernet-based building automation and process technology. Contributing to this success has been both continuous development and close cooperation with customers, which has often given rise to new product ideas and developments.

This successful collaboration has resulted in today's comprehensive IP20 and IP67 I/O portfolio from Beckhoff, which is still based on the original Bus Terminal idea.

Politically correct automation terminology!

Political correctness has reached technical terminology a recent communication from CiA's Holger Zeltwanger reminds us. For many years, terms multi/master, black/white listing, and male/female connectors have been used. Plug substitutes male and socket is used instead of female. So far, so good. Can in Automation (CiA) has already cleaned up its specifications regarding connectors.

Controller Area Network (CAN) has been categorized as multi-master approach since its introduction in 1986. To be more precise, it is a publisher/consumer system. Each node is allowed to transmit at any time data or remote frames. Depending on the frame priority, it gets bus access sooner or later. This means, we do not need the term master for the CAN data link layer description. This is true for all three CAN protocol generations: Classical CAN, CAN FD, and CAN XL.

CAN-based higher-layer protocols such as CANopen introduce a master/slave behavior for NMT (network management) services, for example. In electronics and software technology, the term master/slave is used frequently. It describes a model of asymmetric communication or control, in which one device or process (the master) controls one or more other devices or processes (the slaves) and serves as their communication hub. In some systems a master is selected from a group of eligible devices, with the other devices acting in the role of slaves. Since 1976, the master/slave term has been used in more than 67 000 U.S. patents. Now, we are looking for a politically correct term. There are many proposals hanging around: primary/secondary, leader/follower, parent/child, etc. (In passing, he comments that the term leader should not be translated into German!)  Perhaps captain/steward might be added to the proposals indicating the command hierarchy on ships and in aircrafts.

"CiA has not used frequently black/white listing. The proposed term deny/allow lists seems to me acceptable."

Of course, there are more political correct options. "Only one should be used in the CAN, says Zeltwanger, "and proposals and suggestions are welcome."

Plug-In Easy-Test Terminal Blocks.

New disconnect terminal blocks implement plug-in technology, safe design, and space savings with testing capabilities for use in CT and VT secondary circuits.

Dinkle International has announced the availability of its DPT DIN rail disconnect terminal blocks to provide efficient, safe disconnect and testing of current transformer (CT) and voltage transformer (VT) circuits.

CTs and VTs isolate a primary power feed from a secondary circuit, permit grounding of the secondary circuit, and step-down the current or voltage to an appropriate level for measurement. Terminal blocks are then used as the termination points for instrument loops on the secondary circuit.

Panel builders have traditionally incorporated barrier-type terminal blocks in CT circuits—but these are challenging to access, require proper tools, and take time for backplane mounting and screw-down wire terminations. Additionally, there is always the danger of under-torqueing and loose wiring connections, or over-torqueing and stripped screw threads.

Dinkle’s DPT DIN rail series terminal blocks address these issues by providing easier access, DIN rail mounting with no tools required, and push-in design to ensure secure wiring connection while reducing time and tools required for termination.

The DPTD6 model block also provides direct-testing technology, enabling a user to test the circuit current without undoing any wired connections. To perform direct-test for a single or three-phase circuit, the user switches a lever on the terminal block to disconnect a de-energized circuit. The user then places a current-measuring device across the block at its test points using either 4mm test probes or securely fastened 2.3mm test plugs. The DPTL6 model version is similar to the DPTD6 but without a disconnect lever for testing.

Both blocks are UL rated up to 30 amps at 600 VAC. The blocks are DIN rail mountable and measure 8mm in width by 103.2mm in height by 50-57.5mm in depth (depending on DIN rail depth), allowing for easier installation and space saving compared with traditional barrier-type terminal blocks.

These push-in style blocks accommodate wire sizes from AWG20 to AWG8, and also feature plug-in slots for bridges (jumpers), providing reliable continuity between any combination of blocks on the same DIN rail. They are completely touch-safe—back of hand and finger protection—and operate at temperatures from -40°C (-40°F) to 120°C (248°F).

Users can employ these DPT series blocks to safely disconnect secondary circuits between measuring instruments and safety equipment in CT shorting and other applications. A safe disconnect can be achieved by placing the block in front of the measurement instrument.

Pluggable Terminal Blocks.

Dinkle International's pluggable terminal blocks are a series of products with a unique push-in-design for connecting wires to the terminal blocks.

A pluggable terminal block is composed of a plug and a mating socket. The socket is usually attached to a printed circuit board through pins. The plug fits into the socket, and the wires connect to the socket via their patented push-in-design. This design improves upon traditional screw terminals in terms of efficiency, ease of use and space savings.

Screw terminals take time to tighten properly, and there is always the danger of under torqueing and loose connections, or over torqueing and stripped screw threads. By contrast, wires connected using Dinkle’s push-in-design technology assure a secure connection, with about 75% less time required per wire installation.

Connecting a solid wire with push-in-design takes only 3.6 seconds, compared to 13.5 seconds for a screw connection. A flexible wire takes just 4.1 seconds to connect, while a screw terminal takes 14.4 seconds. A flexible wired with a ferrule takes only 3.7 seconds to connect, compared to 13.2 seconds for a screw terminal.

Pluggable terminal blocks are available in a wide variety of sizes and ratings. Pitch varies from 2.54-6.35 mm, with wire ranges from 30-16 to 24-12 AWG. Current ratings are 5-8 amps at 150 Vac, 8-16 amps at 300 Vac, and 20 amps at 600 Vac. Connection methods are V-type spring (not patented), or patented S-Cage single, double and rail type. Value-added customization services include label printing, and supplying blocks in assorted color combinations.

An LED at each connection point is on when current is flowing through the wire, with LED light pipes integral to the terminal block assemblies used to ensure each LED is clearly visible. This indication provides quick visual confirmation of active connections and is very useful for troubleshooting.

Mini type pluggable terminal blocks include the 0225, 0226 and 0227 series. The 0225 series has an ultra-thin housing with a 7mm height, able to accommodate a broad cross section of 1.5 mm² wire. Various selections of mounting methods contribute to a vibration-proof, secure connection. These terminal blocks are well suited to installation within PLCs, I/O modules, signal panels, etc.

The series 150 pluggable terminal blocks are rated at 16 amps at 300 Vac and 20 amps at 600 Vac. These high-current terminal blocks are resistant to elevated levels of vibration, with a stopper mechanism to avoid overloading. An innovative smart clip facilitates quick plugging and unplugging. The terminal blocks have an ultra-mini housing with a height of 13.80mm. Typical application include motion control components such as servo and stepper drives and amplifiers.

The series 0181, 0156 and 0159 pluggable terminal blocks have a bi-level compact structure to provide space saving and cost effectiveness. The 0156 and 0159 series provide for different printed circuit board layouts to fulfill various market demands and applications. Assorted options of plugging/unplugging methods are available including lock & release, smart clip and screw flange.

High-density multi-conductor terminal blocks.

Phoenix Contact has introduced their PT 2,5/S-QUATTRO terminal blocks. These four-position terminal blocks occupy the same amount of space as the company’s two-position terminal blocks. This allows for a high wiring density without sacrificing space across the DIN rail.

Up to four 12 AWG conductors can be connected in one feed-through terminal block. The terminal
blocks feature Phoenix Contact’s push-in connection technology, for quick, tool-free wiring of the
pre-assembled conductors. Ground terminals are also available in the same shape.

These multi-conductor terminal blocks also have a double function shaft for easy potential
distribution with plug-in bridges and large-surface marking options. Each current path can be
individually tested for the terminal blocks.

As part of Phoenix Contact’s CLIPLINE complete terminal block system, the PT 2,5/S QUATTRO
accepts standard accessories and marking products, which can reduce inventory costs.
