Contactless data and power transmission.

The correct interface plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient connection of devices, machines and systems. Contactless connectivity offers the ability to transmit power and data over short distances without relying on physical connections. In environments where traditional connectivity is compromised by vibration and dust, the contactless solution proves to be extremely reliable.

The advantages of contactless connectivity are many. It not only ensures reliable transmission, but also makes maintenance considerably easier and enables an almost unlimited number of mating cycles. By using RoProxCon®, from Rosenberger, both data and power can be transferred efficiently, e.g. in turntable mechanisms and robot arms. The robust connectors are able to withstand high shock loads and transmit 30 W of electrical power via inductive coupling.

In addition, they support data transfer rates of up to 3.125 Gbps at a carrier frequency of 60 GHz via an air interface. Furthermore, they enable reliable transmission through a wide variety of materials.

In situations where traditional connections have reached their limits, contactless connectivity offers a highly reliable, maintenance-free solution with flexible application options.

The water- and dust-tight Decontactors feature power ratings from 20A to 63A and provide enhanced electrical safety for operators in a production environment which has a high level of humidity and pressure-washing.

The combination of a quick-release button, integral load-break switch, and automatic watertight sealing means that Marechal Decontactors can be connected and disconnected safely and quickly, even under load, by any authorised employee. Eliminating the need for a qualified electrician, to connect and disconnect the electrical supply every time a piece of equipment is moved, significantly reduces maintenance times and costs as well as increasing productivity by making it faster to move mobile equipment between different locations.

“As a food production plant, power-cleaning of equipment is an almost constant operation and Marechal Decontactors have demonstrated their ability to provide a safe working environment for our employees whilst also increasing our operational flexibility and productivity,” explains Mr Laurent Perrin, Head of Maintenance in the Preparation Department of Eckes Granini. “Following expansion in 2010, our use of Marechal DSN Decontactors has been extended to the pump supply and to the discharge machines, where the Decontactors are housed in Marechal stainless steel boxes.”

Marechal’s sales engineer, Patrick Chevrot adds, “An in-house R&D service, backed by a global network of sales engineers or subsidiaries and the ability to customise connectors, means that Marechal can design and install electrical safety connectors which can meet the most challenging operating conditions.”

In addition to automatic watertight sealing to IP66/67, when the plug is connected and disconnected, Marechal Decontactors feature a robust housing with a glass-fibre, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) coating which provides long-term resistance to corrosion and shock. The nickel-silver butt contacts and metal jumpers also guarantee a reliable electrical performance regardless of the number of connection and disconnection cycles.

Solid state switches save space with 17.5mm width

World’s first 17.5mm solid state relay and contactor for DIN rail and panel mounting offer enhanced electrical and mechanical performance in the same form factor as miniature circuit breakers

Carlo Gavazzi has consolidated its range of solid-state relays and contactors, introducing the first such devices to be available in 17.5mm width. Space-saving RG series switches ensure reliable operation and excellent longevity, offering transient voltage protection, robust construction, excellent vibration resistance and advanced features for heat-sink mounting.

The RG series has been introduced to provide cost-effective replacements for existing relays and contactors, keeping part numbers of solid state relays to a minimum in the inventory. As well as rationalising the portfolio, it offers customers major upgrades of both electrical and mechanical performance.

There are two families within the RG series: 17.5mm-wide RGS devices rated up to 600V/90A AC; and RGC, with integrated heat sinks, rated 20A in 17.5mm, up to 30A in 22.5mm housings. RGS switches provide a maximum I²t of 6600A²s, and the RGC’s nominal ratings at 40°C with surrounding temperature de-rated from 0°C up to 80°C.

RG series devices are available for control with DC voltages 4-32VDC. AC controlled types operate with voltages range 20-275VAC and 20-190VDC thus covering standard levels of AC and DC voltages including 24VAC/DC and 110VDC. Switching is selectable between zero-cross or instant-on methods.

Breakdown voltages of 800Vp, 1200Vp or 1600Vp enable RG series switches to cater for the most demanding requirements. Voltage transient protection is provided as standard across outputs using a resistor and capacitor network combined with metal oxide varistors, optionally using transient suppressor diodes where these are more suitable than varistors. There is also protection against control voltage transients; using metal oxide varistors in the case of AC controlled types. DC controlled devices are polarity protected up to 32V DC.

In addition, the RG series offer a radical improvement in mechanical performance. Their design caters for vibration up to 5g (according to IEC60068-2-6), which ensures consistent functionality across a wide range of industries. Key beneficiaries include HVAC, food and beverage and plastics – and even locomotive applications.

RGS solid state relays can be mounted on any heat-sinking surface, conveniently providing a distance between heat-sink mounting holes identical to that of standard hockey puck SSRs. Special stress-relief mechanisms cater for excess forces experienced during heat-sink mounting, as well as when fixing cables to the SSR terminals.

The RG series devices carry CE marks recognising conformity to IEC / EN 60947-4-3, IEC / EN 60947-4-2 and compliance with IEC / EN 62314. RGC types are UL and cUL listed, whilst RGS are UL recognized with pending CSA approval.

Smallest solid state relays

Carlo Gavazzi is reasserting its lead in the solid-state relay market by introducing the first UL-certified solid-state relay and contactor combination in a compact 17.5mm width. The new RG series includes RGS panel mounted models rated up to 600V AC and 90A AC plus RGC versions with integrated heat sink attaining 20A AC in 17.5mm, 30A AC in 22.5mm widths.

With reduced space per unit, nominal ratings at 40°C and (5KA) 100kA short circuit capability, this new range provides silent switching of heaters and motors, with applications in plastic and rubber industries, HVAC, food and beverage, car services, electronics, printing and glass.

All solid state relays and contactors in the series are VDE approved and designed in accordance with the latest EN/IEC62314 norms. Also, unlike most such devices on the market, RG products are UL listed to facilitate machine approvals and inspections. They are robust and reliable, resisting up to 5g of vibration and featuring integrated over-voltage protection across the output. Dependable operation is confirmed by control status LED indication on the front of the device.

The new RG relays can be controlled with a DC voltage range of 4-32VDC, whilst AC controlled types have a voltage range 20-275VAC as well as 24-190VDC, thus covering standard control regimes such as 24VAC/DC or 110VDC. There is a choice of either Zero Cross or instant ON (Random) main voltage switching versions.

RGS relays can be mounted on any heat sinking surface and are designed so that the distance between the heat-sink mounting holes is identical to standard hockey puck solid state relays. They incorporate special stress-relief mechanisms to cater for excess forces during the mounting process.

Throughout the series, installation is simplified by having output terminals designed for easier looping of power cables up to 6mm², with a removable IP20 cover that allows power terminals to accept ferrule, ring and fork type terminations. On the control side, terminals allow for double cables having a cross-sectional area up to 2.5 mm². Good-grip screw terminals are a further innovation to make cabling procedures faster.

As well as -40°C to 80°C operation, the RG series can operate in relative humidity up to 95 percent non-condensing, making them suitable for safe operation of equipment such as small coffee machines and ovens.
