Intelligent softstarter

Automatic settings deliver correct starting current regardless of load

Carlo Gavazzi has launched the RSBS single phase, plug ‘n’ play Softstart motor controller that delivers a smooth start and long term reliability for single phase high pressure scroll compressors typically used in the growing heat pump market.

The RSBS has been developed to reduce high inrush currents and associated effects to prolong compressor life.  The compact design features a self-adapting algorithm that will automatically react to changing load conditions to ensure that a wide range of compressors are started with the correct current and within the required ramp-up time of 600ms.

This self-adaptation feature eliminates light flickering and voltage disturbances, while reducing mechanical stresses on the compressor, and minimises the number of alarms during start-up, resulting in fewer service calls and reduced system downtime.  The RSBS features integrated protection against short-cycling, with an internal delay to ensure a maximum of ten starts per hour is observed.

To address the issue of weak power supplies in remote locations, the under voltage alarm is only active during bypass mode.  Other alarms such as Locked Rotor and End of Ramp protect the system during start up, leading to a reduction in system stoppage and service calls.

Alarm indication is provided through a red LED which signals the type of alarm via a user friendly flashing sequence.  The RSBS can also be supplied with an optional auxiliary alarm relay to interface additional alarm systems to the external panel.  Featuring compact dimensions of 137 x 84 x 60mm, the RSBS is easy to fit in any existing panel design via DIN rail or panel mount.

Using an operating frequency of 2.4Ghz to prevent common radio interference, the system is compatible with a wide range of safety edges and delivers enhanced battery efficiency for a reliable and safe solution in applications such as high speed doors with frequent traffic, tall doors, megadoors and doors in public areas.
Delivering a 10 metre range for use in doors with opening heights up to 20 metres, each system comprises a main controller that connects to the door control panel and up to four wireless sub controllers that connect to the safety edge on the door. The IP66 rated system is suited for internal and external locations and will work with the Carlo Gavazzi photoelectric safety edge and many mechanical and conductive rubber safety edges.

The WSM2BA2D24 main controller with built in antenna features three SPST relay outputs; one normally closed (NC), one normally open (NO) 8.2kohms, and one normally closed for low battery alarm. A test input ensures verification of the sensor safety function and is also used for activating sub modules from battery save mode. Any loss of communication between the main and sub controller modules will immediately activate the safety output. 16 channels are available to eliminate cross talk and the sub controller’s active time can be set from 10 to 80 seconds.

The WSS2BA2BAT sub controller unit is able to handle two safety edges and one door-in-door limit switch, which allows for eight safety edges per system. It can control inputs from all standard NO 8.2kohms safety edges and all standard NC safety edges. Designed for exceptional battery performance, the sub controller is powered by a choice of one to four lithium AA batteries, with a minimum of one year life for one set of sensors.

The Carlo Gavazzi photoelectric safety edge consists of an emitter and receiver housed in 11mm rubber profiles. Providing a range of 15 metres and powered by the sub controller, the photoelectric beam is adjusted at each wake up signal from the main controller to ensure optimal detection performance.

Photoelectric sensor with longer sensing distance & high-speed detection

New cost-reduced PA-18 series delivers longer sensing distance, high-speed detection and improved LED diagnostics, in space saving and easy-to-clean housings

Carlo Gavazzi has introduced its third generation of M18 compact photoelectric sensors, bringing superior performance and higher functionality alongside lower cost and reduced sizes. Available in diffuse reflective, retro-reflective, polarised and through-beam variants, with axial or radial housing options, the new PA18 range of M18 photo sensors offer twice the performance of previous generations at 25percent lower cost. The new sensors are ECOLAB certified as resistant to high temperatures, high-pressure cleaning, and strong cleaning agents and disinfectants, to ensure reliable detection in the harshest environments.

The PA18 series features an optimised aspherical lens design that provides a wide sensing angle and significantly longer sensing range. Thanks to a built-in microprocessor that guarantees advanced filtering and detection and also allows flexible customized solutions, sensing distances are more than doubled. Maximum range is extended to 1m for diffuse reflective types, 6.5m for retro-reflective and 20m for through-beam models. Polarised reflective version can detect up to 5m, representing a 150percent improvement over existing sensors.

From close distances to full range, the sensors' highly precise and linear sensitivity adjustment together with a manual potentiometer provides accurate and easy setting. A new green signal quality/power indicator supplements the familiar yellow target-detection LED, making it easier to set up and adjust the system.

Electrical performance is also enhanced throughout the family. Detection speed is 500 impulse/s - a 400percent improvement on previous sensors. Plus, supply voltage has been reduced to 10- 30 VDC, whilst load current is halved to 100mA. Available as PNP or NPN versions, the PA18 sensors offer the freedom to choose between a normally open and normally closed output in the same sensor, dramatically easing the demands on inventory, storage capacity and stock control.

The PA18 sensors offer high immunity to light and electromagnetic disturbances, with an early warning LED to indicate dust accumulation. Together these features reduce the need for system maintenance and promise higher uptime throughout a longer operational life.

In addition, the PA18 series comes with a new mounting accessory to facilitate quick and easy mounting. The smart and simple mounting accessory, along with robust design of the sensors, makes cleaning easier and more efficient. The detectors are built to withstand cleaning with water at 80°C, high-pressure washing up to 100bar and resist alkaline and acidic cleaning agents, exceeding the requirements of IP69K tests according to DIN 40050-9 as tested by their ECOLAB certification.

Furthermore, the PA18 series sensors carry CE and UL marks, and meet the Low-Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC as well as EMC Directive 2004/108/EC.

Gateway logger

Carlo Gavazzi has introduced a gateway logger device that integrates with EoS Array - its complete solution for control, protection and monitoring of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) plants.

The new EoS-Gate gathers data from solar power installation powered by Eos-Array or Eos-Array Lite and sends them to a centralized supervisory web portal enabling users to monitor all their plants from a central location, using a simple web browser. Web-based monitoring complements the EoS Array's capability to provide local control and alarms together with remote alarms via SMS and GSM communications.

Operating with photovoltaic installations up to 200kW, EoS-Gate provides data polling (measurements and alarms) from Eos-Array/Eos-Array Lite, its energy meters and inverters, and transmits data over the Internet using 'Push' web-services to avoid firewall related issues. Its use of communications protocols based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) delivers a high degree of flexibility, allowing Eos-Gate to push data to multiple monitoring portals, including the Carlo Gavazzi Web Portal and the Fat Spaniel® Web Portal – a platform that likewise allows users to manage their data remotely through an easy and powerful Web based user interface.

Eos-Gate logging capabilities, its robust transmission protocol and the 99.9+% availability of Carlo Gavazzi's best-of-breed web-farm together ensure total  data security along the whole path from the field to the portal’s servers.

The logger is easy to configure, thanks to built-in auto-discovery of local devices, so installers can readily implement a centralized supervisory solution that focuses on the real benefits delivered by PV monitoring.

The solution is completely independent of the inverters used, eliminating the need to delegate data management completely to the inverter – a known weakness of many PV installations. In this way, plant operators can work with a common user interface throughout their operations, free from being locked into one specific inverter model or manufacturer.

Hardware is based on an industrial strength embedded PC with data acquisition, data logging and protocol conversion capabilities, featuring two RS485 communication ports (Modbus), twin Ethernet ports and data storage on a 1GB SD card using hardened industrial grade single level cell technology. Both wall-mount and DIN rail mounting options are available, and the device carries both CE marking and UL certification.

Solid state switches save space with 17.5mm width

World’s first 17.5mm solid state relay and contactor for DIN rail and panel mounting offer enhanced electrical and mechanical performance in the same form factor as miniature circuit breakers

Carlo Gavazzi has consolidated its range of solid-state relays and contactors, introducing the first such devices to be available in 17.5mm width. Space-saving RG series switches ensure reliable operation and excellent longevity, offering transient voltage protection, robust construction, excellent vibration resistance and advanced features for heat-sink mounting.

The RG series has been introduced to provide cost-effective replacements for existing relays and contactors, keeping part numbers of solid state relays to a minimum in the inventory. As well as rationalising the portfolio, it offers customers major upgrades of both electrical and mechanical performance.

There are two families within the RG series: 17.5mm-wide RGS devices rated up to 600V/90A AC; and RGC, with integrated heat sinks, rated 20A in 17.5mm, up to 30A in 22.5mm housings. RGS switches provide a maximum I²t of 6600A²s, and the RGC’s nominal ratings at 40°C with surrounding temperature de-rated from 0°C up to 80°C.

RG series devices are available for control with DC voltages 4-32VDC. AC controlled types operate with voltages range 20-275VAC and 20-190VDC thus covering standard levels of AC and DC voltages including 24VAC/DC and 110VDC. Switching is selectable between zero-cross or instant-on methods.

Breakdown voltages of 800Vp, 1200Vp or 1600Vp enable RG series switches to cater for the most demanding requirements. Voltage transient protection is provided as standard across outputs using a resistor and capacitor network combined with metal oxide varistors, optionally using transient suppressor diodes where these are more suitable than varistors. There is also protection against control voltage transients; using metal oxide varistors in the case of AC controlled types. DC controlled devices are polarity protected up to 32V DC.

In addition, the RG series offer a radical improvement in mechanical performance. Their design caters for vibration up to 5g (according to IEC60068-2-6), which ensures consistent functionality across a wide range of industries. Key beneficiaries include HVAC, food and beverage and plastics – and even locomotive applications.

RGS solid state relays can be mounted on any heat-sinking surface, conveniently providing a distance between heat-sink mounting holes identical to that of standard hockey puck SSRs. Special stress-relief mechanisms cater for excess forces experienced during heat-sink mounting, as well as when fixing cables to the SSR terminals.

The RG series devices carry CE marks recognising conformity to IEC / EN 60947-4-3, IEC / EN 60947-4-2 and compliance with IEC / EN 62314. RGC types are UL and cUL listed, whilst RGS are UL recognized with pending CSA approval.

Surge protection devices preserve solar PV investment

Transient overvoltage protection without backup fuses safeguards quality and lifespan of vital solar energy components whilst maintaining continuity of production

Carlo Gavazzi has extended its solar energy portfolio with new surge protection devices that provide backup protection without internal fuses. The innovative DSF surge arrestors embody a special internal backup that ensures they remain safe at the end of varistor life, thus ensuring the safest transient overvoltage protection for combiner boxes in photovoltaic systems.

DSF surge arrestors comply with new and emerging standards for DC-side surge protection in PV systems, in particular the new French UTE C 61-740-51 and future EN 50539-11As norms.

In addition, they extend the Carlo Gavazzi product family, with three DSF models taking the maximum nominal voltage up to 1200V DC. Available in two- or three-pole configurations, the devices provide both differential and common-mode protection.

Innovative built-in technologies cater for both long-duration temporary overvoltage and instantaneous surges lasting microseconds. The former is addressed by a path combining a current limiter with varistor, whilst faster events are routed to a path with varistor and gas tube surge arrester.

Their innovative technology protects internal varistors from the leakage current that could damage and age them when the nominal DC voltage of the plant is temporary exceeded -  for example in  mornings when the solar panels are cold or in the case of wrong connections. When the varistor nears its end of life, DSF technology ensures the arrester is intrinsically safe with regard to short-circuit behaviour.

DSF arrestors are based on removable cartridges, which can be replaced without leaving the installation unprotected. Exhausted cartridges are indicated by a red optical window on the front panel and a voltage-free contact is provided for remote function monitoring.  Internal wiring and labelled terminals contribute further to quicker, simpler installation and maintenance.

The devices are provided ready-assembled for DIN-rail mounting and come with CE marks as well as UL1449 3rd Edition approval.

EM21-72R is an innovative and cost-effective energy meter with a detachable display, which can be mounted either on a panel with just 72x72mm footprint, or on a DIN-rail in only four modules. No further adaptors or external accessories are required: current measurements are carried out via external miniature current sensors, included with the meter.

Current sensors use a split core technology, so no wiring modifications are needed and there is no need to disconnect cables during installation. The CTs are available in 3 different ranges: 90A with 10mm hole diameter; 150A, hole diameter 16mm; and 250A, hole diameter 24mm.

As a result, the kit offers the simplest and easiest way to introduce an energy measuring system in older buildings and existing installations, without modifying or disconnecting any wiring. Installation is faster and simpler, thanks to the meter’s self-power supply, automatic phase detection with wrong-phase-sequence warning, and fast application-oriented programming procedure.

To provide a ready-to-install package for all retro-fit requirements, the EM21-72R is available in three ranges covering currents up to 250A. Seven sets of three variables can be selected for display, providing for active and reactive energy measurement or a complete set of variables. Options include: system variables such as W, var, PF, Hz and phase-sequence; single-phase variables including A, VLL, VLN, PF; TRMS measurements of distorted sine waves; and energy measurements (total kWh and kvarh).

As standard, a pulse output provides fast and easy data transmission to PCs and PLCs for full load control, whilst all electrical parameters of the installation can sent via the optional RS-485 port for integration with BMS (Building Management Systems) and other standard acquisition-monitoring systems.

Instantaneous variables are displayed as 3 x 3 digits, with energy meter readings to 6+1 digit resolution. Accuracy is ±0.5% RDG (V, A), and the meter is rated Class B according to EN50470-3 (class 1 of EN62053-21), Class 2 (kvarh) according to EN62053-23. Smart soft starters optimise energy use

Carlo Gavazzi is introducing three new ranges of soft-starters designed to optimise energy consumption in industrial applications. The RSQK, RSXK and RSDR series’ provide soft-starting capability for three-phase motors up to 1050kW, with high-end models offering intelligent plug-and-play setup to ensure optimal starting profiles.

Automatic features such as auto end start/stop, soft stop smoothing auto pedestal are built into the RSQK and RSXK soft-starters. They continually adjust their settings to optimise operation, saving time and money in maintenance as well as commissioning.

RSQK series starters are rated for motor currents from 23 to 1800A at operating voltages 230 -460/400-575/500-690 VAC, whilst the RSXK is rated 5-1673A, 230-690VAC. Soft-starting/soft-stopping time is adjustable up to 255s, ensuring that even the toughest applications can be started and stopped in the correct manner.

Both RSQK and RSXK soft starters can control heavy duty loads (Trip Class 30) such as crushers. A user-friendly soft starter selection tool provides a quick and easy selection of the correct configuration for any particular application. In addition, they have pre-set starting and stopping parameters specifically for pump applications, which reduce water hammering by making start and stop actions as smooth as possible.

In addition, the RSQK provides an inductive load feature, which controls voltage across the transformer winding to ensure the transformer stays within current limits throughout the heating cycle.

For smaller motors, the new RSDR series offers power ratings up to 280kW. Maximum current ratings range from 55 to 500A. As well as over current and short-circuit protection, the RSDR has internal bypassing to reduce heat dissipation in tight control panels.

The RSDR soft starters provide ramp- up time setting capabilities starting from 0.5s, making them suitable for applications where start up time needs to be limited. Ramp- up and -down times can be set up to 30s, ensuring reliable soft-starting and stopping to deliver smoother start-up and shutdown of high inertia applications. Front-panel dimensions range from 135 x 140mm 203 x 165mm, providing space-saving solutions with high power capability.

Set up is simple through rotary controls on the RSDR front panel.  Two normally-open auxiliary relay contacts are provided for indication of top-of-ramp status and fault alarms.

As well as new applications where soft-starting is deployed inline to ensure lower inrush current, lower peak-demand energy costs and longer compressor lifetimes, these three new series’ offer easy replacement of star-delta starters. Their six-wire connection option means that there is no need to change the wiring configuration, providing a lower cost alternative with reduced maintenance requirements, lower down-times and less stress on auxiliary components.

All the new devices are IP20 protected against dust and moisture ingress up to 55kW, operate over the 0-40°C temperature range and carry UL certification and CE markings.

Smallest solid state relays

Carlo Gavazzi is reasserting its lead in the solid-state relay market by introducing the first UL-certified solid-state relay and contactor combination in a compact 17.5mm width. The new RG series includes RGS panel mounted models rated up to 600V AC and 90A AC plus RGC versions with integrated heat sink attaining 20A AC in 17.5mm, 30A AC in 22.5mm widths.

With reduced space per unit, nominal ratings at 40°C and (5KA) 100kA short circuit capability, this new range provides silent switching of heaters and motors, with applications in plastic and rubber industries, HVAC, food and beverage, car services, electronics, printing and glass.

All solid state relays and contactors in the series are VDE approved and designed in accordance with the latest EN/IEC62314 norms. Also, unlike most such devices on the market, RG products are UL listed to facilitate machine approvals and inspections. They are robust and reliable, resisting up to 5g of vibration and featuring integrated over-voltage protection across the output. Dependable operation is confirmed by control status LED indication on the front of the device.

The new RG relays can be controlled with a DC voltage range of 4-32VDC, whilst AC controlled types have a voltage range 20-275VAC as well as 24-190VDC, thus covering standard control regimes such as 24VAC/DC or 110VDC. There is a choice of either Zero Cross or instant ON (Random) main voltage switching versions.

RGS relays can be mounted on any heat sinking surface and are designed so that the distance between the heat-sink mounting holes is identical to standard hockey puck solid state relays. They incorporate special stress-relief mechanisms to cater for excess forces during the mounting process.

Throughout the series, installation is simplified by having output terminals designed for easier looping of power cables up to 6mm², with a removable IP20 cover that allows power terminals to accept ferrule, ring and fork type terminations. On the control side, terminals allow for double cables having a cross-sectional area up to 2.5 mm². Good-grip screw terminals are a further innovation to make cabling procedures faster.

As well as -40°C to 80°C operation, the RG series can operate in relative humidity up to 95 percent non-condensing, making them suitable for safe operation of equipment such as small coffee machines and ovens.

Solar inverters

Solar PV inverters broaden support for renewable energy

Carlo Gavazzi is also extending its support for renewable energy installations with the introduction of grid-connected Solar Photovoltaic Inverters.

These compliment the company’s energy management range and embody state-of the art inverter technology. As well as best-of-breed efficiencies (better than 94.37 per cent EU), the inverters incorporate Carlo Gavazzi’s exclusive Smart MPPT technology and PV string control software to deliver up to 20 per cent more energy compared with alternative solutions.

Interface protection and anti-islanding safety circuits ensure that power is only produced when the inverter is connected to the grid, the grid is active, and its parameters are within the appropriate National standards. Maximum usage of solar energy is guaranteed even when skies are misty or overcast.

Most solar PV installation requirements can be fulfilled with Carlo Gavazzi’s range of models, covering power generation from 2.8 to 20kW AC nominal output in four single-phase models (ISMGT 128, ISMGT 138, ISMGT 140 and ISMGT 150), and the ISMG 3 15 and ISMG 3 20 three-phase models. Single phase inverters are primarily aimed at household installations whilst the three-phase models are better suited to larger buildings, industrial installations and solar parks.

All the inverters operate over wide operating temperature ranges without de-rating. The ISMGT 1 series operates up to 58°C whilst the ISMG 3 series can be used up to 50°C. The single phase ISMGT1 inverters are equipped with HF transformers, which enable the use of amorphous (thin film) panels that are typically positive earthed.

The new Solar PV Inverter Series has built in serial communication ports facilitating transmission of energy production data and AC and DC voltage parameters to remote terminals or PCs. Dual serial ports enable daisy chaining of connection with other inverters within the same plant. In addition, software is available as a free download from the Carlo Gavazzi website that allows users to configure and monitor their solar power generation system. The database of the configuration software includes the most popular types of photovoltaic panels and further models can be easily added by the user.

Carlo Gavazzi’s Solar PV Inverter Series come with a five year warranty as standard, that can be extended up to 10 years.

Power analysis

Compact modular power analyser delivers enhanced intelligence and performance

Carlo Gavazzi has a new price/performance level within the company’s energy management range. The WM40-96 smart power quality analyser delivers accurate measurements including current, voltage, power, energy and harmonics – with precise parametric analysis, control, data stamping and retransmission. It is all packaged in a compact plug-and–play modular format that simplifies installation and streamlines inventory management.

With applications throughout the energy management market, the new analyser will be of particular interest to switch-gear panel builders serving medium, large and heavy industry.

Starting with a base unit that provides the display, touch-panel, power supply and measurement inputs, users can then add up to three slim line modules to the rear for alarms, pulse outputs, I/O and data communications interfaces.

A mono LCD occupies much of the base unit’s 96mm-square frontage. All necessary information is available at a glance on the front panel’s customisable home page, which is readily configured by the user. Values of actual vs. installed power are displayed continuously to provide immediate alerts to potential power overloads. White and blue backlights enhance readability and the backlight alternates these colours in sequence to indicate alarm conditions. Up to 16 virtual alarms can be configured by the user for all measurements with OR/AND logic; and these can be linked with up to four relay outputs or optionally up to six static outputs.

Also on the front panel is an optical communication port to enable easy programming and fast access to measurements.

Touch panel technology gives major advantages over traditional push-buttons for selecting from the four main variable areas: energy metering; current-voltage-frequency metering; power and power-factor metering; and harmonic analysis.

The WM40-96 provides high accuracy measurements, rated Class 0.5 (kWh) according to EN62053-22, Class C (kWh) according to EN50470-3, Class 2 (kvarh) according to EN62053-23 and ANSI C12.20, CA 0.5, ANSI C12.1 (revenue grade). Errors are better than ±0.2% RDG for current and voltage.

Additional intelligent analysis includes averaging, minimum and maximum values of all the system and single-phase variables, four quadrant energy measurements and total harmonic distortion (THD) and total demand distortion (TDD) calculations. FFT harmonic analysis is carried out up to the 32nd harmonic (current and voltage), ensuring dependable measurements for load control and alarming.

Whilst the base module alone acts as a simple monitoring device, the meter is completed by stacking low-profile modules on the rear of the base unit. Up to three flat modules can be added: one each of type A, B and C. Depth behind the panel is just 50mm with a single option module.

Dual channel relay output (SPDT) and dual channel static output (AC/DC Opto-Mos) modules are type A. Type B designates analogue outputs including a dual channel 20mA current module and dual channel 10V DC voltage device. Data communications facilities are added using type C modules: currently available are a fast RS485/RS232 serial port, Modbus over Ethernet TCP/IP interface and a BACNet-IP port. Ports have integral memory to provide data and event stamping for up to 10,000 events.

As with other Carlo Gavazzi energy meters and analysers, the WM40-96 carries CE marking and UL certifications.
