AS9100 Certification award.

Intelliconnect (Europe) has been awarded AS9100 certification, which recognises that the company’s quality management system meets the AS9100 standard, a specialised set of requirements for the aerospace, aviation and other industrial sectors.

AS9100 is based on the general quality standard ISO 9001, with additional aerospace-specific requirements covering such areas as safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. AS9100 covers the total supply chain and applies to manufacturers, suppliers and service providers in aerospace of any size.

Compliance to the standard demonstrates that a company has proven it follows a globally recognised aerospace-specific quality system, can deliver products that meet customer and regulatory requirements and has processes to prevent defects and manage risks.

To become certified, a company undergoes an in-depth audit by an accredited third-party registrar, and it must be re-audited regularly (often annually) to maintain certification.

The award was presented to Intelliconnect at their Essex, (GB), facility by Michael Venner of Auva Certification Ltd.

Niobium/Titanium (NbTi) cable for cryogenic applications.

Reliable performance and supply chain security assured.

Intelliconnect (Europe) is an authorised distributor for Niobium/Titanium (NbTi) cable manufactured in the USA by their sister company EZ Form Cable.  

The EZ-86-NBTI cable has both a NbTi inner and outer conductor with a solid PTFE dielectric. Suitable for operation down to millikelvin (mK) temperatures, this cable is widely used in Quantum Computer, Ai and other research applications.

Verified through third-party testing, the .086 cable exhibits loss under .5db per 100 ft at 4 Kelvin with thermal conductance at 1.5K: G= 1.88uW.cm/K and 4K: G=21.0 uW.cm/K

The new cryogenic cable can be supplied in standard lengths or suppled as NbTi cable assemblies utilising non-magnetic connectors.

Connectors have new base.

A global hub for engineering, sales, admin and marketing with an exhibition area and conference suite

Intelliconnect (Europe) have opened of their new base for sales, marketing and engineering in Essex (GB) with a celebration of their innovation, achievements and future aspirations. The new 4300sq/ft facility is poised to be a hub of innovation and excellence providing a base for long-term company growth, and will be home to Engineering, Sales, Admin and Marketing and feature an exhibition area and conference suite. It will also be available for other Trexon group companies to use as European base.

The event saw a gathering of employees, partners, customers and other Trexon group company representatives coming together to celebrate the occasion.

Gareth Phillips, Managing Director of Intelliconnect, says, “The grand opening of our new office in Witham, Essex, marks a significant milestone in our story, and one that paves a way for a prosperous future. This event was not just about a new location but a testament to the collective effort of the Intelliconnect family in making our business what it is today.”

Employees from different departments and partner companies also used this opportunity to discuss ideas, share insights, and explore potential new collaborations. Phillips continues, “With our business and partners being spread across the UK and beyond, it is rare that we find the time to all get together. Being able to spend a day getting to know each other better was a real joy.”

After a celebratory barbeque, Managing Director Gareth Phillips made a keynote speech reflecting on past achievements and offering an exciting glimpse into the future. He also made a number of awards including two special awards for long-service.

Maria Wright, a Sales Administrator, has been with Intelliconnect from the very beginning, an incredible 20 years, and has been a cornerstone of the company's sales operations, contributing significantly to its growth and success. Her dedication, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment have earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues throughout her two decades of employment.

Arden Lawson, a Production Engineer, marked his 10th year with the company. Known for his technical expertise and problem-solving skills, Arden has played a crucial role in the company's production processes. His contributions have been instrumental in maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony carried out by the two long serving employees was the highlight of the day, symbolising the beginning of a new chapter for Intelliconnect.

Long service recognised.

Customer service has always been key to the culture of Intelliconnect (Europe) Ltd and a key figure in providing this is Maria Wright, the very first employee that Roy Phillips the founder of Intelliconnect, hired.*

For the whole of her 20 years at Intelliconnect Maria has been a sales administrator, where her main job roles include costing, quoting, following up with customers and supporting the company’s sales team. In recognition of this commitment to the company Gareth Phillips, Managing Director of Intelliconnect recently presented Maria with a very special watch to thank her for all her hard work over the past two decades.

"I was incredibly proud to be able to award Maria her 20th anniversary gift," said Gareth Phillips. "As she is a proud Italian, we of course had to get her an Italian designer watch! Maria was Roy Phillips's first hire for Intelliconnect Group and 20 years later she is still with us."

Big grins in the picture as it was a very happy occasion and not at all based on trying to work out how to hold hands without it looking massively awkward!

High density cryogenic connector.

Reliable transmission of critical signals at very low temperatures Up to 24-way with compact and simple connection Attenuators available to suppress thermal noise

The CryoCoax Q-CON high density cryogenic connector has been announced by Intelliconnect.

With the fast-growing rollout of quantum computing, and the development of large-scale high qubit machines, a greater number of microwave cables are now necessary for control and readout lines to the quantum processor. These have traditionally been provided by individual coaxial cables fitted with SMA connectors which offer limited packaging due to their 8mm hex coupling, which also requires space for access for tooling during installation.

CryoCoax, a division of Intelliconnect, have developed high-density multiway connectors based around the SMPM interface which not only provide many more coaxial lines in a given space but also simplifies the installation and customisation within a dilution refrigerator. Typical spacing using SMA connectors is limited to approximately 16mm, whereas the new Q-CON high-density connectors are designed with a pitch of 4.75mm. The SMPM interface provides a simple push to mate connection only requiring a hex key to tighten the two fasteners.

The connector components are machined from high purity copper and beryllium copper and are gold plated to provide best thermal conductivity. Non-magnetic versions can also be specified if required. The connectors are compatible with .047” (1.19mm) size coax, either semi-rigid, flexible or conformable versions are available. Semi-rigid cables are available in Niobium Titanium, Stainless Steel, Copper, Cupronickel and Beryllium Copper as well as combinations of these with silver plated conductors, providing the user with a large choice in terms of thermal conductivity and attenuation.

To minimise passive heat load, cable materials with low thermal conductivity are normally favoured, however, with the exception of superconductors this typically goes hand in hand with poor electrical conductivity. Flexible cables having silver plated copper conductors are typically used for connections from the top of the dilution refrigerator to connect the control electronics at room temperature and can be terminated with conventional SMA connectors. Conformable copper coax options are also available and are often used at the lowest stage.

Superconducting Niobium-Titanium cables are often specified in quantum applications this material can be challenging, if not impossible, to solder. To overcome this, CryoCoax developed solderless connections for these high-density connectors as well as the traditional SMA, 2.92 and SMP connectors.

Standard configurations of the new Q-CON high-density connectors are 8-way, 16-way and 24-way with either smooth bore or full detent options, connector blocks can be ganged together to potentially give hundreds of coax lines in a dilution refrigerator. Two connector blocks form a mated pair, one having a full detent male SMPM interface, and the other a smooth bore SMPM male interface, these are used in conjunction with ‘bullet’ style female to female SMPM adaptors fitted between a pair of connector blocks.

The ‘bullet’ adaptors are retained in the full detent connector block. These can be combined with 8-way, 16-way and 24-way attenuator blocks available in 0dB, 3dB, 6dB, 10dB and 20dB. CryoCoax worked with a leading attenuator manufacturer in developing these attenuator blocks to compliment the high-density connectors. Attenuators are employed to suppress thermal noise and provide thermalisation of the centre conductors.

Twenty years connecting.

Continued growth in core markets and innovation in Quantum Research and Computing

April 2023 marked the 20th year of trading for Intelliconnect (Europe), a specialist manufacturer of RF, Microwave, Waterproof and Cryogenic connectors and cable harnesses. The last few months have seen many changes to the way the company operates and is engaging with the future.

Now a part of Trexon Global, a worldwide group of specialist companies providing unique connectivity solutions that withstand the toughest environments and the most exacting applications, Intelliconnect has access to even greater opportunities in a global marketplace.

With the retirement of the previous and founding management, the new team are busy innovating, improving process and seeking new recipients for its multitude of technical solutions in both Cryogenic and traditional products. The company are already collaborating closely with several Trexon partners and investment and growth plans are in place to ensure a bright future.

As Managing Director, Gareth Phillips says, “We have built an amazing business, staffed with amazing people, that do an amazing job and work with amazing customer and supplier partners.”

Intelliconnect has always punched above its weight and was the little business that could, but now they are a bigger business that can and are pushing hard to be the big business that meets its aspirations.

Have there been growing pains? Yes. Will there be more? Intelliconnect timeline 2003: The beginning. Intelliconnect was formed in 2003 as a direct result of the offshoring that occurred in the British connector industry following the telecoms crash in the late 90s/early 2000’s. It was conceived from a passion to revive the British connector manufacturing sector and was founded and funded by four individuals in partnership with Labcraft Ltd, a leading British low voltage lighting specialist.  The business was set-up in a corner of Labcraft’s facility in Chelmsford (GB), predominantly manufacturing lighting on a sub-contract basis for Labcraft. The first employee other than MD, Roy Phillips was Maria DeVries. Phill Skingsley soon followed as Production Director and the manufacture of connectors commenced with orders from Rhophase Microwave in Corby, a company which would have a big impact on the history and success of Intelliconnect.  In the early days, the business had no direct sales team and relied on word of mouth, existing contacts, Google Advertising and various outlets such as Interface Components Ltd. to spread the word. It soon became clear that administration assistance was needed and Maria Wright, a former Labcraft employee, was hired. Maria is still with the business today.  Sales in the first year reached the heady heights of £120,000. 2005: A Pivotal Year. 2005 was a pivotal year as for 3 reasons. Labcraft took the decision to restore its  manufacturing capability, it was decided to close the original Intelliconnect company and reform as Intelliconnect (Europe) Ltd, this time with 50% each ownership by Labcraft and Roy Phillips and Intelliconnect acquired the assets of a failing US connector manufacturer, Select Connect. Consequently, in only its third year of trading, Intelliconnect had completely re-organised, lost a significant proportion of its manufacturing output and acquired a US subsidiary, now called Intelliconnect USA. In addition, Labcraft announced that they were de-leasing their Warehouse and a new home for Intelliconnect was needed.  It was decided that all manufacturing would be sub-contracted to Phill and Carol Skingsley and the 2-person admin team were relocated to an office in Chelmsford (GB). Manufacturing was then carried out in Phill’s garage in Harrow (GB). This continued successfully until 2013. 2006-2009: Growth. The business grew, albeit relatively slowly, there was still no direct salesforce, and the banking crisis of 2008/09 was a major brake on growth. Despite this, in 2007 the company won its first major defence contract with Signature Industries and in 2009 a Sales Manager was finally employed. 2010 -2012: Consolidation. In 2010 sales dropped by 50% (the only time in Intelliconnect’s 20-year history that sales had fallen) before recovering in 2011 to £640k in 2011 and further growing to £825k in 2012.  The primary driver for this growth was the company’s entry into the medical market in the USA, most particularly in the cochlear implant space. Sales in their home market however remained static.   2013 – 2014 Another Pivotal Period. Two significant things happened in 2013. Firstly, the business acquired the services of David Hazell a veteran of Greenpar, Macom and Midwest Microwave to head up the sales function. This had a huge impact on the credibility and ability of the business to start playing in a higher league. Secondly, following the sale of Rhophase Microwave (then Intelliconnect’s biggest customer in Britain), the new owners decided to re-locate the business to Blackburn (GB). Intelliconnect saw this as an opportunity to seriously get involved in the RF cable assembly market, so it immediately employed Arden Lawson, Rhophase’ Production Manager to set up an Intelliconnect cable assembly operation in Chelmsford. 2014 – 2018 A Period of Rapid Growth.  In this period sales grew from just over £1m to £3.2m. The most significant driver of this growth was the company’s entry into the Cryogenics/Quantum computing arena as well as acquiring significant business from the country's largest shipborne radar company.  In 2014, Intelliconnect was also lucky enough to be able to acquire the services of Martin Spooner, one of the top RF engineers in Britain, an investment which was essential as the business moved into new markets and was working with blue-chip customers. Also, in 2014 the cable assembly team was further enhanced and the operation was moved to a small unit in Corby Enterprise Centre and in 2016 to a new larger unit in Cavendish Courtyard in 2017. This was followed by a move to the Corby Innovation hub in 2018 all driven by rapid growth. 2018 saw the first orders from one of the world’s largest companies engaged in Quantum research.  This coincided with the birth of Intelliconnect’s cryogenics/quantum brand, CryoCoax.  In 2017 a 5-year plan was put in place with the goal of replacing the senior management of the business and a potential sale in 2022. 2019 – 2021 Building for the Future. This period saw slower growth, mostly due to the effects of the pandemic but still saw a 14% increase in sales over the 2-year period.  In 2019 Steve Groves, Sales Director and Gareth Phillips, Operations Director were employed with a plan to replace the existing SD and MD completely by 2022. The teams were enhanced by a further 11 new engineers between Britain and the USA. 2022 Stunning Growth and Acquisition. 2022 was the year when so much hard work, foresight, knowledge and experience came to fruition with sales topping £10m, a growth of 60% over 2021. A further 9 hires were added including a new GM for Intelliconnect USA, Josh Copeland.  Most importantly, in September 2022 the company was acquired in its entirety by Trexon Global, a US group focused on building interconnect brands through Innovation, Expertise and Collaboration.    "Everyone at Intelliconnect has to say thank you to all of our customers, suppliers, colleagues and consultants past and present that have allowed us to build a business that we can all be proud of. The survey notes that, in the Britain and internationally, firms with higher management practice scores on average tend to have higher productivity and profits.  With a policy of continuous improvement Intelliconnect have achieved accreditation to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, adding to their existing ISO 9001:2015 quality standard and SC21 Silver performance standard for the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space Industry Supply Chain Programme. Intelliconnect (Europe) Ltd has announced that Dr Ziad Melhem, Non-Executive Director of its CryoCoax division, has been appointed as Chair of the British Cryogenic Council.

Ziad is the Founder and CEO of Oxford Quantum Solutions Ltd (OQS) and has more than 30 years of experience in all things cryogenic. He is active at National and International levels and member of a number of committees, organisations and advisory boards. He has been welcomed at the BCC where he joins Dr Andy-Blackett May the new Secretary on the BCC committee.

QQS is focussed on innovations and advanced solutions, strategic business development, strategic road mapping and technical authority on superconducting, cryogenics, instrumentation in quantum and nanotechnology applications for quantum, energy, life sciences, physical sciences, transport and power applications.

Intelliconnect (Europe) Ltd has been awarded the industry standard Cyber Essentials Certification for the third year in succession across all of their websites. This is a mandatory requirement for companies who supply to  certain agencies and has equal importance for its industrial, medical, aerospace and research customers.

Cyber Essentials Plus still has the Cyber Essentials trademark simplicity of approach, and the protections required to put in place are the same, but also requires a hands-on technical verification to be carried out.

Cyber Essentials Certification ensures that a high level of cyber security measures are in place to protect against the vast majority of common cyber-attacks. All customers can be assured that Intelliconnect are constantly working to improve security across their IT systems to secure them against all types of cyber-attack. Certification requires compliance to a number of IT-related control parameters including firewalls, user access control, malware protection and patch management.

New management team announced.

A new senior management team has been unveiled by Intelliconnect (Europe) following their recent acquisition by Trexon Global. Gareth Phillips is now Managing Director and Steve Groves takes the role of Sales & Marketing Director.

Gareth and Steve were already in place as part of the planned retirement of Roy Phillips, founder and CEO, to ensure continued smooth running of the company in line with Roy’s belief that people are the most important resource of any organisation. He will be staying on in an advisory role for a period to make his wealth of experience available to the new team.

Roy Phillips says, “So after nearly 20 years of fun, frustration, fantastic people, hard work and the utter joy of watching my baby grow from an embryo in the corner of a warehouse to the multi-national, multi-million-pound business it is today, it is time to hand over the reins of Intelliconnect to my fantastic new management team under the ownership of the Trexon Group.” 

Commenting on the acquisition Phillips says “Trexon very much have a ‘hands off’ approach to running their businesses and are about investment and growth, factors which were decisive in making our choice of acquirer. Supply chain award for connectors and cable harness assemblies.

Intelliconnect has achieved the SC21 Silver Performance Standard Award for the fourth consecutive year.

This prestigious award is granted by the SC21 Board* of ADS, the trade organisation for the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space Industry Supply Chain Programme and is designed to accelerate the competitiveness of the industry by raising the performance of its supply chains. The programme has also been endorsed as part of the Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP’s) Competitiveness Charter.

This is a significant achievement which is nationally recognised and the SC21 Board has offered their congratulations to the entire team at Intelliconnect for obtaining this important recognition award as part of their continuing supply chain excellence journey. Over its lifetime, the SC21 programme has had over 880 participating companies signed up to its principles and engaged in engaged in demonstrating their continuous performance improvement.

Appointment at cryogenic cable assembly business.

Dr Ziad Melhem has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Intelliconnect's CryoCoax division. Ziad is the Founder and CEO of Oxford Quantum Solutions Ltd (OQS) an independent consultancy business launched in February 2021.

QQS is focussed on innovations and advanced solutions, strategic business development, strategic road mapping and technical authority on superconducting, cryogenics, instrumentation in quantum and nanotechnology applications for quantum, energy, life sciences, physical sciences, transport and power applications.

Ziad was previously the Strategic Business Development Manager of Oxford Instruments NanoScience (OINS), implementing alliances and collaborative R&D projects on quantum, nanoscience, and nanotechnology applications.

He has over 32 years’ experience on new product design and business development activities in applied superconductivity, low and high temperature superconducting (LTS & HTS) materials, cryogenic, quantum and nanotechnology applications for scientific, medical, energy and industrial sectors.

If you could travel back 18 years and tell yourself 3 things that would make the journey smoother, what would they be?
Find a different industry! No seriously, 1) Network with people better, 2) Choose a different route into the US market, 3) Don't employ the wife as your Finance Officer 😊

What is your fondest memory of the past 18 years involving Intelliconnect?
So many! Travelling the world, particularly Japan. Chasing our US Sales lady around a parking lot in Florida with a bungee cord pretending it was a snake! Wonderful Christmas and Summer parties with the team. Meeting and working with so many inspirational colleagues, customers, suppliers and partners.

How has the industry changed in the past 18 years?
It has, to a degree, become consolidated in that many, many small RF businesses in both UK and USA have been subsumed by larger entities, often detrimentally. In terms of manufacturing, the move offshore in the connector industry has continued apace and there are very few businesses manufacturing RF connectors in USA or UK. I am proud to say that Intelliconnect is an exception in both. Product and Markets have changed tremendously. Harsh environments are much more to the fore now with many more RF systems located outside with remote RF monitoring being a massive part of that. The move to smaller and smaller components and cables has continued and we now have some mind blowingly tiny coaxial cables which 18 years ago would have been unimaginable!

If you could choose 1 song to describe your past 18 years with Intelliconnect, what would it be?
That’s easy. "Don't Stop Me Now!" by Queen. It was a theme song at my Daughters' primary school and is so inspirational and kind of describes our philosophy as a business.

What do you feel is the main component (wink) of Intelliconnect’s success?
That’s also easy. brilliant, talented people, having a dream and daring to do!

What does the future look like for Intelliconnect?
The future, currently looks very, very bright. We have been very successful in recent years in penetrating new markets like cryogenics, remote RF monitoring, RF ablation, to name just a few, as well as creating many new partnerships in traditional Mil/Aero, medical and industrial markets. Our product portfolio has grown massively in recent times and we have a couple of major product launches which are imminent. We are growing steadily (25% in 2020) and expect an even bigger growth in 2021. We are on well on target to achieving our vision of being, ......'the most agile, imaginative and fastest growing interconnect business in the world'.

Intelliconnect was recently listed in the top 25% of respondents in the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) Management and Expectations Survey (MES) 2020. The largest ever survey of UK business management capabilities, executed on a population of 25,000 companies across industries, regions, firm sizes and ages, documenting the variable quality of management practices. The survey notes that, in the UK and internationally, firms with higher management practice scores on average tend to have higher productivity and profits.
With a policy of continuous improvement Intelliconnect have achieved accreditation to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, adding to their existing ISO 9001:2015 quality standard and SC21 Silver performance standard for the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space Industry Supply Chain Programme. In top quarter for management!

Intelliconnect have participated in the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) Management and Expectations Survey (MES) 2020*. Overall Intelliconnect’s management practices scored 0.84 on a scale from 0 to 1, compared to an average score of 0.60 across Great Britain. This places Intelliconnect in the top 25% of respondents.

Helping CERN bringing about a “second quantum revolution.

CryoCoax has joined other technology specialists in sponsoring the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI). The programme will explore the potential of devices harnessing perplexing quantum phenomena such as entanglement to enrich and expand its challenging research programme.

Today’s information and communication technology grew out of the invention and development of quantum mechanics during the last century. But amazing as it is that billions of transistors can be packed into a smartphone or that photons are routed around the internet with the help of lasers, the devices underpinning the “first quantum revolution” merely rely on the weird properties of quantum mechanics – they don’t put them to use directly.

The QTI sees CERN join a rapidly growing global effort to bring about a “second quantum revolution”, whereby phenomena such as superposition and entanglement, which enable an object to be in two places at the same time or to influence another instantaneously, are exploited to build new computing, communication, sensing and simulation devices.

While still in their infancy Quantum technologies have the potential to revolutionise science and society. In recent years, the growing importance and the potential impact of quantum technology development has been highlighted by increasing investments in R&D worldwide in both academia and industry.

The new CERN QTI will encompass the Laboratory’s R&D activities and plans in this field and provide examples of the potential impact on research. It will also highlight the rich international network of activities and how CERN fosters research collaborations.
